A Targa Tasmania co-driver has recalled in court the fatal crash that claimed the life of his companion Shane Navin. A coronial inquest into the deaths of four competitors is underway in Hobart.

00:00Veteran driver Shane Navin was killed when his 1979 Mazda RX-7 rolled into a culvert
00:08on the Mount Arrowsmith stage of the race.
00:11His co-driver Glenn Evans survived.
00:14The pair had competed together 11 times.
00:17Giving evidence, Mr Evans recalled the moments before the crash.
00:20He said he remembered feeling the front of the car start to lose grip on a bend and then
00:25the car was sliding.
00:27Mr Evans said Mr Navin managed to get the car back onto the road and he said nice catch
00:31mate, but then the car slid off the road and landed heavily on its roof.
00:36He told the inquest there was water in the car from a creek and Mr Navin wasn't responding.
00:41He said he was worried he would drown.
00:44Mr Evans couldn't get him out of the car and tried to flag down another competitor for
00:48help but his wave was misinterpreted and the driver continued going past.
00:53Targa says it will facilitate any recommendations that come out of the inquest.
00:58Coroner Simon Cooper will hear from witnesses all week, including the CEO of Motorsport
