New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Wednesday (Sept 25) said he expects to be charged with criminal offences by the federal government that he said were "based on lies" and he vowed not to resign if indicted.

Adams' statement came after the New York Times reported he had been indicted following a corruption probe, but the indictment is sealed and it is unclear what charges he will face.

00:00My fellow New Yorkers, it is now my belief that the federal government intends to charge me with crimes.
00:09If so, these charges will be entirely false based on lies.
00:17But they would not be surprising.
00:19I always knew that if I stood my ground, all of you, that I would be a target.
00:25And a target I became. For months, leaks and rumors have been aimed at me in an attempt to undermine my credibility and paint me as guilty.
00:37Just this past week, they searched the home of our new police commissioner looking for documents from 20 years ago.
00:46Just one week after he joined my administration.
00:51Enough. I will fight these injustices with every ounce of my strength and my spirit.
00:58If I'm charged, I know I am innocent.
01:02I will request an immediate trial so the New Yorkers can hear the truth.
01:08New Yorkers know my story. They know where I come from.
01:12I have been fighting injustice my entire life.
01:16That fight has continued as your mayor.
01:21Despite our police and the federal government did nothing as its broken immigration policies overloaded our shelter system with no relief.
01:31I put the people of New York before party and politics.
01:35But I have been facing these lies for months since I began to speak out for all of you.
01:42And their investigation started. Yet the city has continued to improve.
01:47Make no mistake. You elected me to lead this city and lead it.
01:53I will.
