The Love & Sex of the Eastern Hollywood is a 1998 Hong Kong film directed by Aman Chang Man (張敏) and produced by Wong Jing (王晶). The lead casts include Athena Chu Yun (朱茵) as Yue, Kathy Chow Hoi-mei (周海媚) as Maggie Shiu Mei-kei, Paulyn Suen Kai-kwan (孫佳君) as Selina / Pink / Mrs. Bing, Angie Cheung Wai Yee (張慧儀) as Hing and Karen Yeung Ga-ling (楊嘉玲) as Siu-hung. Wong Jing does character assassination with this esoteric satire on ACTUAL HK celebrities.
This film goes right for the jugular as it parodies the lives of ACTUAL HK media celebrities. The lives of six famous HK women are examined in a loose, totally inconsequential plot that only makes sense if you know the actual scandals from which the story is lifted. Sadly, chances are that most of you don’t.
Athena is a parody of Sandra Ng Kwan-yue (吳君如), who finds her sexuality questioned and her relationship with Alex To Tak-wai (杜德偉, played by 林伟亮 Michael Lam Wai-leung) laid out on film. She’s lusted after by Queenie (陳法蓉 Monica Chan Fat-yung), a lesbian radio show host who’s based on someone popular within the Hong Kong entertainment circle.
Yue is friends with movie queen Mei-kei, who’s a stand-in for movie queen Maggie Cheung Man-yuk (張曼玉). She’s locked into a failing relationship with a self-loathing director / actor, Kao Shing, that’s meant to be Derek Yee Tung-sing (爾冬陞, played by 陳錦鴻 Sunny Chan Kam-hung).
Mei-kei’s pal Hing has problems too. She has a poor figure and a crappy acting career. To alleviate this, she gets implants and becomes an overnight sensation. Of course she’s meant to be Veronica Yip Yuk-hing (叶玉卿). And then there’s Mrs. Bing, or Mrs. Kenny Bee, who’s just as sickening and shallow in this movie as she was rumored to be in real life. Rounding out the sextet of women is suddenly-everywhere softporn starlet Siu-hung, who plays an actress who gets gang-raped, and later whores herself out to a prince in a foreign country, and returns to Hong Kong as a rich and powerful woman.
