00:00Hi everyone, I'm Alex Nelson, and I recently caught up with Emma Jones CBE, the founder
00:06of Enterprise Nation. She's shared some crucial insights on business security as we
00:11kick off our campaign against what we're calling silent crime, which includes a growing
00:15epidemic of theft and violence against businesses. Did you know, for instance, that crimes against
00:21businesses account for 20% of all recorded incidents? It's a serious issue, and Emma
00:26laid out five easy steps every business owner should take to protect themselves and their
00:31teams. Firstly, Emma recommends doing a quick risk assessment. Identify the vulnerable areas
00:36in your business. For retail stores, it's often stock that's at risk, but for those
00:41working from home or in an office, cybercrime might be your biggest threat. Next, get some
00:46expert advice on securing your premises. Simple solutions like good lighting, alarm systems
00:51and CCTV can make a big difference, and affordable technology like ring cameras can provide a
00:56peace of mind and deter crime, especially for customer-facing staff. Third, train your
01:01staff to be vigilant about data security. Often, small changes in emails or other forms
01:07of communication can be the telltale sign of a fraud, and regular training can help
01:11your team stay ahead of cybercriminals. The fourth step is to utilise technology effectively.
01:18Install firewalls and antivirus software on any computer systems, and implement two-factor
01:22authentication for sensitive information. Regularly review your security measures to
01:27ensure they're up to date. Lastly, don't overlook insurance. There are affordable options
01:32that cover public liability, theft and even protect your staff, and it's crucial to
01:36have the right coverage in place to safeguard your business from unforeseen events.
