00:00The 4th of November 2000 and two proud clubs met at Elland Road to extend a rivalry that at times had been bitter.
00:08There was mutual respect between Leeds manager David O'Leary and Liverpool's Gerard Huliet, though,
00:13just as there had been between Don Revy and Bill Shankly in the past.
00:17Leeds were doing well in their first season in the Champions League, thrashing Begitas,
00:21beating AC Milan and drawing against Barcelona, but their league form was indifferent.
00:26They were only in mid-table and had seven international players out,
00:29including Harry Kuehl, Nigel Martin and Lucas Radeby.
00:32However, Lee Boya and Olivier Decor returned to the line-up.
00:36Dominic Matteo, a £4m signing, played against his former club,
00:40and he was up against former Leeds favourite Gary McAllister, who started for Liverpool,
00:44along with Sammy Hoopia, who was preferred to Stéphane Anceau in defence.
00:48There was a shock up front, as Robbie Fowler, who'd netted during the week
00:51and helped shoot the Reds to third position, was only a substitute.
00:55Patrick Berger replaced him.
00:57Your match commentator is Jon Helm.
01:03It really is a very nice day here in Leeds,
01:06and that's amazing to think that just 20 miles away, the city of York
01:10is virtually cut off with the dreadful floods that we've had in this part of the world all week.
01:15First free kick of the day, awarded by Mr Ellery to Liverpool,
01:19and will be taken by the German international, Christin Sieger.
01:24It was his arrival at Anfield that necessitated Matteo's move here to Leeds.
01:28Taking his position, and a flicked head-off to Heskey.
01:32Heskey really in a purple patch at the moment.
01:36Five goals in the first half,
01:38and the Reds are in the second half.
01:41Heskey really in a purple patch at the moment.
01:44Five goals in his last three Premier League appearances.
01:53Robinson's goal kick, Robinson continuing to deputise for Nigel Martin,
01:57who blinked out two or three weeks ago.
01:59Robinson seems to have undergone a severe examination since,
02:03against the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United.
02:06He has another examination today from Liverpool.
02:10All the early attacking coming from them, and that's the first free kick.
02:13Won by Heskey.
02:15Jonathan Woodgate just letting Heskey know who's marking him today.
02:21A signal for not just Heskey to be in the Leeds United penalty area,
02:26but Marcus Babel, Sammy Hoopier, all top men, it is Hoopier!
02:30And Sammy Hoopier scores for Liverpool.
02:35A crushing blow to the home team,
02:37and Liverpool, who have a great record over the years here at Anfield,
02:41are ahead already.
02:44Floated in by Berger, Hoopier's header, and Robinson had no hope,
02:49the ball flashed into the corner of that Leeds goal,
02:52and it's 1-0 Liverpool.
02:54Berger.
02:56Hoopier.
02:57Goal.
03:00And I did refer to the fact that Liverpool have a smashing record
03:04here at Elland Road over the years.
03:08Woodgate there has got quite a challenge on his hands today
03:12with the informed Heskey,
03:14and it looks to me as though Leeds are already thinking of a change here,
03:18and Danny Hay, the 6'4 New Zealander, is about to come on,
03:23and David O'Leary is taking drastic action immediately in this game.
03:29A very early substitution indeed.
03:33And it's Woodgate coming off.
03:36Well, that's an interesting one, and Woodgate looks disconsolate.
03:41And I think he's going to go straight to the dressing room, he is.
03:49So, 25-year-old Danny Hay, who's won 16 international caps for New Zealand
03:55and has only recently settled in here at Elland Road,
03:59is called upon to partner Dominic Mathieu for the last 75 minutes of this game.
04:08We'll hear later whether Woodgate had an injury,
04:13or whether O'Leary was unhappy with his performance,
04:16the referee's unhappy with Kelly's challenge on Berger,
04:19free kick for Liverpool, for whom everything is going right at the moment.
04:30They've already scored from one free kick.
04:32Calister's taken hundreds on this ground.
04:35Takes one against Leeds, now they're in trouble here!
04:38It's two, it's Christian Ziga, and Leeds are being caught out by these free kicks,
04:44and Liverpool have a very healthy lead so early.
04:49Julien Delighted, and it's the two foreign defensive stars who've got the goals.
04:54Hoopey at first, and now Christian Ziga.
04:58Robinson maybe a little flat-footed as the free kick from Calister comes in,
05:03and Robinson is beaten by a header for the second time in the early minutes.
05:1017 minutes gone and Christian Ziga plunders his first goal as a Liverpool player.
05:16Well, if Leeds are going to win this one, they've got to come back sharply.
05:28Leeds are in real trouble, and what a shocking start for Hay,
05:34not to say that he was to blame for that,
05:36but he'd been on the field as a substitute about 30 seconds when the free kick came in,
05:41and Ziga's head was the one to make contact.
05:44Heskey now, through the middle, it'll break for Hamann,
05:48now Heskey once more, they're all over the place, Leeds.
05:51This time Heskey fails to thread it into the path of Murphy,
05:55D'Acco breaks for the men in white.
06:00Free kick for Burns, Carragher's challenge.
06:06Well, it's all smiles I can tell you down on the anfield bench at the moment,
06:09Gerard Huliet and Phil Thompson, it's a dream start for them.
06:15They could find themselves at the end of this morning joint top of Manchester United on 24 points.
06:20Here's a Leeds free kick, and the answer is from Smith.
06:25And it's just over the top from Alan Smith.
06:29Good effort from him, and that certainly would have lifted Leeds if this had found the net.
06:33He gets in well.
06:36Hearts free kick, Smith up high, above Ziga, the ball over the bar.
06:43They're only previously way within the Premier League so far this season,
06:46was at Derby County in their last fixture 4-0.
06:50Almost a collision there between Ziga and Kupiec,
06:53Kupiec scores with two goals, it's broken to Viduka.
06:55Can he punish them? He can!
06:57Leeds are back in it, Mark Viduka.
07:00And catastrophe for Christian Ziga there,
07:03and Leeds have found that little lifeline I was talking about from a very unlikely situation.
07:11And Mark Viduka looks to the heavens.
07:14But what is Ziga thinking about here?
07:16Under challenge from Smith, he plays it across, I think it brushed off Smith's studs,
07:20and Viduka kept his cool to Chit Vesterveld.
07:23And Leeds have their first goal of the day,
07:25and are right back in it, though still trailing 2-1.
07:34Viduka uses his strength to get it away from McAllister,
07:37and Leeds have a quarter.
07:40Haven't won many of those yet.
07:44Seven minutes remaining in the half.
07:47And Leeds looking to claw their way back into this match,
07:50which was going so much against them inexorably so in the first minutes.
07:56A comment from Bojan.
08:00He found a way through to Bakir, but he wasn't too aware of the goal.
08:06Liverpool keep breaking, there's a huge gap appearing on the right,
08:09here's Deke Bahaman, could make it three!
08:12Robinson makes a splendid stop.
08:15And that might well have been curtains for Leeds
08:17if Deke Bahaman had repeated the goal he scored against Leeds last season.
08:22A poor foot by Heskey.
08:25He's getting booted for everything he does here.
08:27But Paul Robinson there again has shown what a promising young goalkeeper he is.
08:33Terrific break involving Smitser again,
08:35whose roving commission today is proving a problem for Leeds.
08:39Berger surely getting nowhere now.
08:44That enables Ian Hart to get to halfway.
08:51Widuka who got that Leeds goal.
08:53Now Dakor, looking for a second Leeds goal!
08:56That's the moment of the match so far.
09:00Olivier Dakor looking for his first goal as a Leeds player,
09:03really extending Westerveld.
09:06Gets hold of that and it was flying towards the top left-hand corner of Westerveld's goal.
09:12We're in the time added on in the first half at Elland Road
09:14with a Lee-Bowyer corner.
09:16A high one.
09:18And he loses out to Heskey, much to Liverpool's relief.
09:23It looks as though they're going to take their lead with them into the break.
09:37I think David O'Leary's team talk will be very interesting.
09:41Leeds have shown signs in the last 15 minutes or so
09:44of getting into this game a little more.
09:47The referee having to shield his eyes to see that his assistant
09:51has signalled a foul here by Ziger on Smith.
09:55And I think the German might be cautioned in a moment.
10:04Might look anxious.
10:07And he's a headteacher is David Elric.
10:09Now this time he is reaching for a card for definite.
10:12And what's the decision going to be?
10:14It's obviously a free kick against Christian Ziger
10:16and I think it's going to be a yellow card.
10:22It's a very unnecessary thing for him to do.
10:25The proximity to the half-time whistle is just handed Leeds some encouragement
10:29here that they might snatch an equaliser.
10:34Elland Road will erupt if they do.
10:36And now Berger is going to be booked as well
10:39because he wasn't the required 10 yards.
10:41And Leeds can go a little closer to the penalty area.
10:44Two bookings in a minute for two of Liverpool's foreign stars.
10:50Hulie and Phil Thompson angry on the touchline.
10:54They know that their own players are the ones here
10:57who are just handing Leeds the opportunity of getting level.
11:01Ian Hart might look to bend it around this three-man wall.
11:05McAllister thinking of making it a four-man wall.
11:09He's now rubbed the end of it more anywhere at the moment.
11:11Here's Hart.
11:12Oh, he hits the base of the upright.
11:15It flew off a Liverpool player, McAllister I believe,
11:19and flicked off the upright.
11:21Otherwise it would have been 2-2.
11:23It's McAllister's head.
11:27Leeds with the goal.
11:29Leeds with the corner.
11:30McAllister I to clear.
11:32That's the last action of the half.
11:34There's plenty happening here at Ellen Road.
11:36Early goals from Sally Hoop, his head.
11:40And then also from the head of Christian Ziegert
11:43so that Liverpool were two up very early in this game.
11:46And then Leeds pulled a goal back through Mark Viduca.
11:49It is Leeds United 1, Liverpool 2.
11:58We're underway again here.
12:01Still a lovely day here in Leeds.
12:04A stark contrast to what the weather was offered earlier in the week.
12:09Towards Smetzer who's had an excellent first half for Liverpool.
12:14Leeds will feel that they are very much back in the game
12:17after that Viduca goal, which had an element of fortune about it.
12:21The ball scraping off the studs of Alan Smith
12:24as Ziegert played it square
12:26to open the door for Viduca.
12:28He took an excellent advantage
12:30and there's a free kick for Leeds for the foul
12:32by Babylon Smith.
12:42Bakker has stroked it wide for Gary Kelly.
12:45It's a very dependable full-back
12:47whose speed takes him beyond Berger.
12:49Good cross, Viduca's header.
12:502-2.
12:522 for Viduca.
12:53Viduca leads right back in the match.
12:57And just as Liverpool struck in the first two minutes of the game,
13:01so Leeds have struck in the opening two minutes of the second half.
13:05Super work from Gary Kelly down the right
13:08who left Berger for dead here
13:10and the cross was measured onto the head of the Australian, Viduca.
13:15And it's promptly on Sander Westerveld
13:18and it's two apiece.
13:21Just a minute into the second half as Viduca rose
13:24and he continues this great, rich seam of form
13:28he's having at Ellen Road.
13:32That's seven goals in the last five Premier League games for him.
13:40Hands forward, Viduca into the area.
13:42He'll be pressurised.
13:44Has to take evasive action
13:46and that's so expertly.
13:51He steps in to win it and to give it to Burns.
13:54Oh, you're a little drag back.
13:56Leeds are certainly posing problems here.
13:59Alan Smith must surely score.
14:01What an astonishing escape for Liverpool.
14:04And Smith holds his head in his hands.
14:07It's Jamie Carragher who has saved Liverpool from going behind.
14:11Desperate between Babel and Westerveld,
14:14Smith seems certain to score.
14:17Still can't believe he hasn't done.
14:19I can't believe it, he can't believe it.
14:21It's still 2-2.
14:24That has to go down as one of the misses of the season.
14:28Liverpool are coming back immediately
14:30with a response from Smith there
14:32which elicit to a free kick.
14:34But Alan Smith there, who marked his debut for Leeds two seasons ago
14:39with a goal in four minutes against Liverpool
14:43seemed absolutely certain to score.
14:46He stroked the ball and fortunately for Wester's Babel and Westerveld
14:51Carragher stuck out the boot and it went for a corner.
14:54It wasn't a goal.
14:59It looked like Jamie Carragher.
15:04I'm reminded of an incident when a certain Gordon Smith
15:07missed a certain goal in the FA Cup final for Brighton.
15:11The phrase then wasn't Smith must score, but didn't.
15:16It was Alan Smith.
15:20Callister free kick for Liverpool, danger here to Leeds,
15:23but it's gathered by Robinson.
15:31They're certainly giving plenty of money today, these two sides.
15:38Heskey, problem here for Hayes.
15:41Heskey, can he do what Smith couldn't do?
15:43No, he can't either.
15:45Because Robinson, who for the second time today
15:48makes a save with his legs.
15:50And Paul Robinson continues to grow in command here
15:54as the Leeds United goalkeeper.
16:00And Gatnoir has gone in very sharply on Carragher
16:04who to his credit doesn't make anything of it at all.
16:07Absolutely pats the Frenchman on the back.
16:10Free kick.
16:13Worries again for Leeds with a Callister free kick
16:16which will curl across their penalty area.
16:20Could it be the height of Heskey or Hoopia or Babel here for Liverpool?
16:26It's not beyond the lot of them,
16:28but straight through to somebody else in red.
16:30And, oh, this time Marcus Babel is spoiled.
16:33It's astonishing that this scoreline hasn't changed
16:36in the last five or ten minutes.
16:38Marcus Babel denied what would have been a first goal for the club
16:43to follow the first one scored by Christian Ziga earlier.
16:48Nicely covered by Babel,
16:50and then Aman angles it into the path of his fellow German, Ziga.
16:54Score of Liverpool's second goal, here goes Bergenau.
16:57It's perfect for Schmitzer, 3-2 Liverpool,
17:00and Wladimir Schmitzer has only his second ever Premier League goal.
17:07Well, he's worked hard today
17:09and Wladimir Schmitzer gets his rewards.
17:13Ziga made the inroads,
17:15and then it's cut back perfectly by Berger,
17:18and from one Czech to the other,
17:21and it's 3-2 Liverpool.
17:25Super goal, beautifully constructed
17:28and delightfully executed by the Czech Republic international.
17:35Just over an hour gone,
17:373-2 Liverpool, they regain the lead they lost
17:40when Viduca scored in the first minute of this half.
17:47Robbie Fowler is about to come on, and so is Steven Gerrard.
17:51So two English internationals coming on,
17:55Danny Murphy one of those being replaced.
18:00This will be worrying for Leeds United,
18:02with Robbie Fowler's score of seven goals against them
18:05in the last six seasons off,
18:07as is Gary McAllister.
18:11Steven Gerrard, his replacement.
18:19Hart's ball,
18:21a chase-on with Viduca and Babbel.
18:23APPLAUSE
18:33Gerrard's a young man of course,
18:35there's a full England international now.
18:38Liverpool looking to protect this lead that they have
18:41with just under 20 minutes remaining.
18:49Dakar has turned one man well,
18:51and gets it too.
18:55Off Gerrard, well it really would set it up
18:58if Leeds were to get a third goal.
19:00I think we could look forward to a pulsating last quarter of an hour then.
19:05How may score from Bollier's corner?
19:10Dakar got a touch, and he's got another one!
19:13And it comes back off a defender.
19:15Arms raised, but he smacked it straight into Christian Seager.
19:20Leeds unlucky not to profit from that corner,
19:22and Seager has gone off the pitch.
19:27He's grabbing a part of the anatomy where it hurts a great deal,
19:30I can tell you.
19:33He's already been treated off the pitch by Steve Galli,
19:37and Dave Galli.
19:40He did his job though, Seager, getting in the way of that Dakar effort,
19:44otherwise it would have been 3-3.
19:47Leeds looking to be level again.
19:49They've shown some character in coming from behind once.
19:53They've got to dig deep again now.
19:55The ball in is to Bollier.
19:57Dakar, inch perfect, Viduka,
20:00turns, must get the shot in,
20:02he scores!
20:04It's a hat-trick for Mark Viduka!
20:07Leeds 3, Liverpool 3, what a match.
20:11And what a game for Mark Viduka.
20:16It was a lovely ball from Dakar,
20:19let's give him some credit as well here.
20:21Bollier, Dakar's ball, perfect.
20:24Viduka twists and turns,
20:26Bjorn Berger slips it across Westerveld,
20:30and Liverpool just can't deny the Australian
20:33his first ever hat-trick in the English Premier League.
20:37Super goal for the Australian,
20:39who is red-hot at the moment.
20:43It's game on again,
20:45and it's a one-man ban for Leeds United.
20:51Tremendous stuff from Mark Viduka.
20:57And the supporters saluting him,
20:59and he's so elated, look at him,
21:01the adrenaline really pumping through his veins.
21:05Mark Viduka! Mark Viduka!
21:09Mark Viduka!
21:11And off goes Berger, worryingly for Liverpool,
21:14though Nicky Barnby of course is due to come on.
21:29We believe that it's a twisted ankle
21:32the injury suffered by Patrick Berger,
21:35doing his best to deny Viduka.
21:38Another international, Nicky Barnby,
21:40who scored on this ground in April for Everton,
21:43is coming out to replace the Czech international.
21:46Tremendous drama here in Yorkshire,
21:48but it's an Australian who has captured the hearts of the local fans.
21:54It was a golden moment for a player to score a hat-trick
21:57and to get one against Liverpool,
21:59a side he's never played against before.
22:02It must be a wonderful feeling for the Australian.
22:05Took him a little while to settle in here at Tottenham Road,
22:08he's settled in now, all right.
22:09Ball is through the middle for Burns, he's one-on-one,
22:12the other Australian, Jacob Burns.
22:15Not this time.
22:21Dakor, who's so influential, can't get it through this time,
22:24but he's still got options, Dakor.
22:26It's Viduka, he's onside, has he got...
22:29Oh!
22:30He has!
22:32What a moment, what a day.
22:36Unbelievable.
22:38Two in two minutes for Mark Viduka,
22:41and leads ahead for the first time in the match.
22:46Well, very, very few players score four times against Liverpool,
22:51very few get four in a Premier League game.
22:54Dakor again, the architect.
22:56These precision passes are splitting Liverpool open,
23:00he hit Viduka, Viduka hit the net.
23:03Astonishing.
23:05Well, I'm not sure, I think that Dakor may have been attempting a shot there,
23:09but when it's your day, everything comes off,
23:13and it's certainly coming off Mark Viduka.
23:17But Mark Viduka there has written his name into folklore,
23:22and he's fairly happy, you could say, and so is he.
23:27It's snowing now, though.
23:32Mateo wins a header.
23:37Dakor's back there, but it's a free-kick given.
23:42Burns' challenge.
23:44This must be Liverpool's last hope of securing a point.
23:48Hamann rolls it forward.
23:51Here goes Gerrard.
23:53Ziga.
23:55Back to Hupia.
23:57Danger for Leeds here.
23:59Still danger, but the flag is raised, it's going to be offside.
24:07Mr Ellery says play on, Liverpool will certainly do that,
24:10but Leeds, in the shape of Eric Bakker,
24:13lifts the ball up into the other half of the field.
24:16Again Mr Ellery consults his watch.
24:19It's all over, it's his day.
24:23Well, the mark of a champion,
24:25Mark Viduka brings a huge smile to the face of David O'Leary.
24:31Not a one-man show by any means,
24:33but Mark Viduka, with a four-goal salvo,
24:37has pulled this match around for Leeds,
24:40who seemed almost dead and buried when they went behind
24:43two early headers from Hupia and Ziga,
24:46and he gets a colossal hug from his boss.
24:50And he's earned it.
24:51Ball for Viduka.
24:53David O'Leary's men victorious in an outstanding match.
24:57Although Liverpool lost, they remained an irresistible force,
25:01and Gérard Houllier's men were duly rewarded.
25:03They successfully captured a treble of cups
25:06and equaled their premiership best,
25:08finishing third to earn a place in the Champions League.
25:12Mark Viduka's quadruple lifted Leeds to seventh position after this match,
25:16and although they dropped to 13th by New Year's Day,
25:19they posted a premiership season best of 13 games unbeaten.
