00:00Merseyside derbies are tense affairs whenever the two clubs clash, but with Liverpool pressing for a Champions League place and Everton struggling to fight off relegation, there was a particular edge to the meeting on Easter Monday 2001.
00:13As ever, Goodison was packed for derby day, 40,000 wearing either Everton's blue or Liverpool's red.
00:20The Toffees were captained by 39-year-old Richard Goff, and welcome back the talismanic Duncan Ferguson, who'd managed 97 goals so far in his club career.
00:32A man seemingly always on a mission, Ferguson's commitment could always be relied upon.
00:39Liverpool were firing on three separate fronts. Having already won the League Cup, they were still involved in Europe and the latter stages of the FA Cup.
00:47Robbie Fowler capped in the side.
00:50Could Gerard Houllier inspire his tiring troops to another success, or would Walter Smith's team take advantage of Liverpool's busy schedule?
00:58Your commentator is Steve Banyard.
01:02And Liverpool to get us underway, kicking from left to right in the first half.
01:08Oh, Scott Gemmell, immediately making his intentions very clearly known.
01:22You can rest assured that the tackles will be flying in tonight.
01:25A noisy night in the north-west of England.
01:48And there goes Ferguson on for Campbell.
01:52That's where Ferguson can be so, so lethal.
01:59Sammy Herpia, who's been such a dominant force at the back for Liverpool this season, managing to get the important challenge in.
02:06Goff is forward, so too Xavier.
02:09Away by McAllister.
02:13Bianco up towards Campbell once more.
02:22Understandably, it may take the two teams a while to settle.
02:27Unsworth searching out Ferguson.
02:31Appeals against Carragher, Jeff Winter with his hands behind his back.
02:37Played forward here for Emil Heskey.
02:39Flag stays down, chance for Liverpool, Heskey!
02:431-0 Liverpool, after just four minutes.
02:48What a blistering start for the red side of Merseyside.
02:54Heskey's 21st goal of the season.
03:00You can't leave him 1-1, he is deadly.
03:06There were appeals at the other end against Jamie Carragher, they were waved away by the referee.
03:11And Heskey drills it under Paul Gerrard.
03:14The red side of Liverpool celebrating, but that's the incident at the other end.
03:21It seemed to come off Carragher's arm, now should that have been a penalty?
03:28When you're down near the bottom and you need a victory, you don't need decisions like that going against you.
03:39Now Ferguson, Campbell peeling away to his right.
03:42Campbell peeling away to his right.
03:46Ball still forward, the tackle now being punished by referee Jeff Winter.
03:56But it was very late.
03:58And the name of Michael Ball goes into the notebook of referee Jeff Winter.
04:12Michael Ball has been playing as a centre-back alongside David Weir of late.
04:17And there is Weir.
04:20Giving a close watch of Emil Heskey.
04:22Lifted on by McAllister.
04:24To Smeetsen.
04:28Babbel.
04:31Towards Ivo Bishkan.
04:36Ball a little bit untied.
04:39Ball a little bit untied at the moment.
04:45Elbow straight in the face of Michael Ball.
04:52The booking for Ball, it has to be yellow as well for Bishkan.
05:01We've only had ten minutes, we've had one goal, two bookings.
05:05A typically eventful Merseyside derby.
05:15Now here's that earlier incident.
05:17There you see it, it's outside the box.
05:19Carriger, a clear handball.
05:21And immediately Heskey going to the other end and scoring.
05:25The fate of Everton Football Club.
05:28They will just hinge on that decision.
05:31You never know.
05:32Smeets just holding him back.
05:48This is a fair way out.
05:50I'd be surprised if Unsworth does anything other than look for the head of Duncan Ferguson.
06:03Go on!
06:10Here's Ball.
06:15Weir.
06:17Campbell.
06:18Gemmell.
06:19Ferguson missed his kick.
06:23Well, that was the best chance Everton have created so far.
06:27But a missed kick from Ferguson.
06:32It's back for Campbell.
06:35Watson.
06:37Looking for Ferguson.
06:38Westerveld.
06:39Gemmell.
06:42Scott Gemmell.
06:44With a goal at his mercy after Westerveld could only just get his fingertips to it.
06:50Great cross by Watson.
06:52Westerveld.
06:54Westerveld.
06:56Westerveld.
06:58Westerveld.
06:59Great cross by Watson.
07:01Westerveld at full stretch and Gemmell likewise.
07:12Where's Hedda?
07:16Now Smeets.
07:17Trying his luck from long range but never really got hold of it properly.
07:21Vladimir Smeets.
07:22That's it.
07:27Richard Goff having an outstanding game at the back.
07:31So commanding in the air.
07:35I suppose when you look at what Goff and Walter Smith achieved at Rangers
07:39and you look at what Manchester United are doing in the Premiership right now
07:42certainly comparisons to be drawn.
07:45There was a time when everybody was saying how boring the Scottish title race had become.
07:53Rangers winning year after year.
08:06Certainly for a neutral it would be nice to see more competition for Manchester United next season.
08:13And all credit to Sir Alex Ferguson and the players at Manchester United.
08:16They've had such an exceptional season.
08:19The question is whether the likes of Liverpool can catch them up next year.
08:24Oh and a header that's almost fallen into the path of Robbie Fowler.
08:27Great challenge from David Weir.
08:33Careless by Everton. Straight to Bishkan.
08:39Well, Everton cause their own problems there.
08:49Michael Owen is on the bench today.
08:53I'm sure Gerard Oulier is thinking partly of the second leg of their UEFA Cup semi-final
09:00against Barcelona this coming Thursday.
09:05Xavier now in the right back spot for Watson.
09:10Trying to get round the outside of Carragher who holds his ground.
09:19Xavier's throw. In for Ferguson.
09:23Watson. Bishkan away.
09:42Ferguson. On for Campbell.
09:45It might break here.
09:46It's Ferguson. It had to be. It's 1-1.
09:54The towering Scott has pulled the blue half of Merseyside back on level terms.
10:03His height set up the chance. The ball broke kindly for him.
10:07He followed it up. He smashed it in.
10:11And Everton have a lifeline.
10:17The 98th goal of his club career.
10:22And he relished thumping that one in the back of the neck.
10:32His pride there for all to see.
10:38Osho's header. Helped on by Babbitt.
10:43Bianco fouled by Bishkan.
10:47He's certainly been mixing it in this first half as Igor Bishkan, the Croatian.
11:01Guess who they're going to aim for.
11:04Slightly longer that time.
11:06Campbell going up for the return.
11:07Ferguson almost getting to it. Westerveld hooking it away.
11:12And the free kick has been given in Liverpool's favour.
11:18Watson coming in behind along with Xavier.
11:21And Campbell penalised for the little shove on Sander Westerveld.
11:421-1 at halftime. And what a first half it's been.
11:45Duncan Ferguson coming up with the equaliser for Everton late on in the first half.
11:50After a moment of real controversy in the fifth minute.
11:53Carragher looked like he handballed it just on the edge of the area, just outside.
11:58And Liverpool broke. Heskey finished and drilled it onto the body of Paul Gerrard.
12:04This Gerrard, Gerrard Oulier, will be very happy that his team are 1-1 at halftime.
12:09But he won't be happy that Ferguson pulled Everton back level at halftime.
12:14It's Everton 1, Liverpool 1.
12:19The 164th league Merseyside derby.
12:34Still plenty of players on the treatment table, of course, notably for Everton.
12:39They've been plagued by that all season.
12:43Francis Jeffers out with a shoulder problem.
12:45Naismith and Gascoigne both with knee problems.
12:49Cleland with a thigh.
12:51Danny Catamartu played in the reserves last week, but he's had an ankle injury that's kept him out.
12:56Jermax Moore came on as a sub at Aston Villa at the weekend, but he's been troubled by a calf problem.
13:02The good news for the Toffees tonight is that Goff, Xavier and Ferguson are all back in the starting line-up.
13:13Trying his luck in the opening stages of this second half.
13:31Here's Gemmell.
13:35Nialko.
13:38Good play by Nialko, and Westerwelle closed down so quickly by Gemmell.
13:45Well, Gemmell really had every right to go for it, but it was a nasty one.
13:53Great play initially by...
13:55Alex Nialko, the Ghanaian.
13:59And Westerwelle very bravely coming in for that.
14:04Gemmell just a fraction away from contact.
14:10Armsworth.
14:13Used his head.
14:15Used the legs of Marcus Babel.
14:17Everton throw.
14:19Campbell, back to goal.
14:21Trying to find a space.
14:23Watson, dinking one to the back stick for Ferguson.
14:26Hooked back in by Armsworth.
14:28Away by Hamad.
14:30And it's in.
14:32It's in.
14:34It's in.
14:36It's in.
14:38It's in.
14:40It's in.
14:42It's in.
14:44It's in.
14:46It's in.
14:49And then a wild one from Michael Ball.
14:54Heskey in the air. Fowler chasing.
15:01163 goals in 304 appearances for Robbie Fowler.
15:07What a strike rate.
15:11Nialko.
15:13Gemmell.
15:16Seems as if...
15:18Watson on the right being pushed ever further forward
15:21so that Xavier can tuck inside and release Nialko to support Ferguson and Campbell.
15:37This a very promising position for Everton.
15:40David Armsworth, left footer, to curl it in towards goal.
15:45Watson almost touching it.
15:50Hamad brings it away and thumps it on for Fowler.
15:53Break on here for Liverpool.
15:55Ball chasing back.
15:57Fowler looks for options.
15:59Armsworth can't reach it.
16:01Schmitzer leaves it.
16:03And that's a thumping goal from Marcus Babel.
16:05Liverpool back in front.
16:08A classic counter.
16:11Everton having thrown players forward for the free kick at one end.
16:16Suddenly caught.
16:18Armsworth swung it in.
16:20And Deitmar Hamad found the killer pass here.
16:23Look at this.
16:25Fowler went racing off.
16:27Ball was never going to get to him.
16:29Fowler with time to change.
16:30Went racing off.
16:32Ball was never going to get to him.
16:34Fowler with time to check his options.
16:36Armsworth tried to flick it.
16:38Schmitzer left it.
16:40Babel didn't. 2-1 Liverpool.
16:45Joy on the bench for Gerard Houllier and Sammy Lee.
16:52Everton must come from behind a second time.
16:55Goebbels cross, up by Ancel.
16:57This is Nialko.
17:01Played in towards Watson.
17:06Steve Watson gets into the box so, so often.
17:10But Babel made so much ground to reach that.
17:21Schmitzer.
17:23Everton looking stretched.
17:25Schmitzer. Fowler.
17:27Under pressure from Goff.
17:28What's the referee given here?
17:30I think he's given the penalty.
17:38Not only has he given the penalty,
17:41he's going for the notebook.
17:43Schmitzer played it in for Fowler.
17:46Goff will look to get a little bit of contact on the ball there.
17:51The faintest of contact.
17:59Well, the yellow card being shown.
18:05I think both for Gerard, for protesting,
18:08and to Richard Goff.
18:10And Robbie Fowler has a penalty for Liverpool.
18:17Two very controversial decisions from Jeff Winter.
18:22The ball almost not on the spot.
18:30Fowler against Gerard.
18:33Off the post, he's missed it.
18:36Everton are still alive.
18:39And maybe justice was done.
18:42Well hit by Fowler.
18:45And it's in.
18:46And maybe justice was done.
18:49Well hit by Fowler.
18:52A little stutter in the stride to try and throw Gerard the wrong way.
18:57The keeper went the right way.
19:04One here towards Alex Anderson, cleared by Liverpool.
19:08Followed up now by Michael Ball.
19:11Ball again.
19:13Off his shins, but the player's been pulled back.
19:17Bishkan has been booked.
19:19And the referee is going to his notebook once more.
19:23And this could be another key turning point in the match.
19:27Bishkan has already received one yellow card.
19:33Pushing, says Jeff Winter.
19:36Yellow, then red.
19:38Liverpool down to ten men.
19:43Gerard Oulier in disbelief.
19:50Less than ten minutes for Everton to claw their way back.
19:54They did so at the end of the first half.
19:56Can they do so at the end of the second?
20:01Walter Smith.
20:06Looking to just change things around a little tactically at this late stage.
20:12Herpia guarding Ferguson.
20:16And he needs to. Ferguson's flick.
20:20Oh, he's given the penalty, has he?
20:22For holding him down.
20:28Well, I don't believe this.
20:31Jeff Winter.
20:35Well, was he being held down here?
20:37Herpia with his arms out wide.
20:40Had his left arm around him, but
20:42surely that was pretty 50-50.
20:45Don't know, that's a tough one on Liverpool.
20:47It's balanced out maybe in the end.
20:49McAllister booked in amongst all of that.
20:55Walter Smith sees a mayhang on this.
20:59Unsworth against Westerveld for 2-2.
21:02Yes!
21:07They've come back twice.
21:10It's David Unsworth.
21:12Will that be a goal that gets a point that gets Everton's survival?
21:28The roar around Goodison Park is deafening.
21:32The roof has almost come off here.
21:43Vinyals cross.
21:46Oh, his first contribution, not one to remember.
21:54As a result of Fowler going off, Sammy Herpia has taken the captain's armband.
22:05This has been one of the most memorable games of the season.
22:13It's lived up to the billing.
22:15It's lived up to all the expectation.
22:18Xavier and McAllister getting in a tussle.
22:36McAllister's free kick.
22:38Herpia's header! Fantastic save by Gerrard.
22:43Well, the makeshift captain almost came up with a winner.
22:49Wonderful leap by Gerrard.
23:02Alexanderson, did that hit the arm of Gary McAllister?
23:06Vinyal brings it clear.
23:08Alexanderson chasing it back.
23:13Free kick, Liverpool.
23:16Don't tell me it's going to be another yellow card.
23:25From behind, but he got the ball.
23:43Come on!
23:45McAllister with a free kick for Liverpool.
23:47Is this the final chance?
23:49We've had three minutes already of stoppage time.
23:51McAllister!
23:53Oh, it's unbelievable!
23:55It's Gary McAllister in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
24:00And Liverpool lead for a third time.
24:04Surely there's no way back for Everton now.
24:08Can you believe this?
24:09What a match this has been.
24:11He had no right to score from there,
24:14but it was end perfect.
24:17A fantastic goal.
24:22Oh, what a jaw-dropping match this has been.
24:28What a Merseyside derby.
24:36This has been great.
24:38This has been quite sensational.
24:41Liverpool 3-2 winners.
24:43Everton are simply heartbroken.
24:46Almost the final kick of the match.
24:49Awesome entertainment.
24:51Full-time at Goodison Park.
24:53Everton 2, Liverpool 3.
24:56One of the most dramatic Merseyside derbies of all time.
25:01Gary McAllister's goal did prove crucial for Liverpool.
25:03They clinched that Champions League spot on the final day of the season.
25:08Happily, it wasn't a killer blow for their city neighbours
25:11as Everton managed to avoid the drop.
25:13They finished fifth from bottom.
25:15Liverpool ended up third and won three trophies.
25:18It was a year of celebration for the red half of the city
25:21who believed their team were finally ready.
