Transcript
00:00It had been a troubled, but entertaining start to the season for Derby County and Charlton Athletic.
00:05The two clubs had been involved in eight games, which had yielded a total of 36 goals.
00:10But entertaining football doesn't always translate into points.
00:13Derby had just three, while Charlton were on four.
00:17The Rams had a lengthening injury list to contend with.
00:20Horacio Carbonari, Daryl Powell and Craig Burley were all missing,
00:24but the recent loss of top scorer Branko Strupa was perhaps of most concern.
00:29It was Malcolm Christie who took over from Strupa,
00:32while Jonathan Johansson started for Charlton after coming off the bench and scoring in midweek.
00:37Kevin Lisby had to be content with a place on the bench as a result,
00:41and Alan Kerbishley, who was in his tenth season as Charlton manager,
00:44welcomed back Kyle Tyler from suspension.
00:47The travelling Charlton fans hadn't seen their team pick up an away point all season,
00:51while Derby's home supporter had yet to see their side manage a home win.
00:54Something had to change.
00:56Your commentator is Alan Parry.
00:59Derby County in the white shirts and black shorts get us underway.
01:04Charlton Athletic in red and white.
01:09Derby, including the end of last season, have now gone seven Premiership matches without a win,
01:15and have managed only one victory in the last 11.
01:20As I say, if it's goals that you're looking for,
01:24then you shouldn't be disappointed in this match today.
01:26Schnur under early pressure from Robinson,
01:28in fact without the ball in the back of the net from Johansson within 30 odd seconds,
01:34but of course it was quite clearly offside,
01:37and the whistle had gone long before he made contact.
01:42Richard Rufus,
01:44then over the head of Powell,
01:46now Tyler returned to the side today after a one-match suspension.
01:50Steen Sturridge who has it back for Derby County,
01:53and was strong in possession,
01:55and that's a great ball forward chance early on!
01:57Oh, it should have been a goal for Dion Burton.
02:00Well, we've had the ball in the net,
02:02and we've had the ball in the net,
02:04and we've had the ball in the net,
02:06and we've had the ball in the net,
02:08and we've had the ball in the net,
02:10and we've had the ball in the net,
02:12albeit ruled out within 30 odd seconds,
02:14within two minutes it should have been in the net,
02:16and this one would have counted.
02:18Derby County who make a habit of going behind and rescuing the situation,
02:22almost taking an early lead,
02:24and the Jamaican international Dion Burton has missed a wonderful chance there.
02:29Credit to Dean Carley and the Charlton goal for getting it away,
02:32but really that should have been 1-0.
02:41Clever lay-off by the Welsh international Robinson.
02:45This is Powell, a former Derby County player.
02:48This is Powell, Robinson on the ball again.
02:51Very experienced player for Charlton,
02:54brushed aside rather easily there.
03:01This is Powell, had two and a half years at Derby,
03:04and played over 100 times for them.
03:06Touch him in, Charles! Touch him in!
03:11Tyler with the long ball, and again defending,
03:14not of the highest order, and the goalkeeping had to be,
03:17as Jonathan Johansson produced a splendid effort.
03:22Mark Poon turning it over, but the defending by Derby,
03:25well it's easy to see why they've leaked so many goals this season.
03:29And this game certainly has started in the way it promised,
03:33with defending being rather questionable.
03:37But chances already, with less than five minutes gone.
03:47Turn back in again, and Mark Poon had to make another fine save.
03:52Well it's been a remarkable start to this game,
03:56particularly for this young man, Johansson,
03:59who could have had two goals already, met that one firmly,
04:02great header, and Mark Poon, the Estonian international,
04:05who was Derby's player of the season last year,
04:09produced a wonderful reflex save again.
04:22This is Higginbotham at two million pounds,
04:25signing from Manchester United.
04:27Already four goal attempts in the opening six minutes or so.
04:31Higginbotham with a second opportunity,
04:46didn't get many first team chances of course at Manchester United,
04:49only played half a dozen games for Sir Alex Ferguson's team.
04:53He stayed forward, and again the defending all over the place,
04:58and this time it is a goal, and it's Christie who gets it.
05:01Seven minutes gone, Derby County finally get to take the lead in a game.
05:11Malcolm Christie, who returned in midweek against Middlesbrough
05:16with two goals, is on target again.
05:21And for this youngster, that makes a very impressive statistic,
05:25it's his eighth goal in Derby's first team in 26 appearances.
05:30Great relief for Jim Smith and his chairman there,
05:33that finally they get themselves into a whole match,
05:36where they're not having to come behind,
05:39or come from behind I should say.
05:41Remember they had been two and three goals adrift
05:44in matches this season against Southampton, Everton and Middlesbrough,
05:48only to come back and rescue points.
05:50It would be ironic if they didn't get something out of this now.
05:55Here's Graham Stewart, all on again to the ever lively, ever dangerous
06:13Johansson who's got round Schnoor with ridiculous ease,
06:16and it could have been the equaliser, still could,
06:19then a foul by Johansson.
06:22Well, Hunt has been in terrific form this season,
06:25as he was for Charlton last season when he was top goalscorer with 25.
06:31And this has to go down as a miss.
06:37Complete missed kick in the end by Andy Hunt.
06:42But look how easily Schnoor was beaten there by Johansson.
06:46Alan Kervish already cursing the missed opportunities for his side.
06:53And Charlton win it back well. Rory Dillac caught in possession then.
06:57Here's Kinsella for Charlton.
07:00Stewart.
07:02Seth Johnson wins it back, but the referee saw that as a foul by the derby man.
07:11Kinsella again.
07:12Here's Stewart.
07:14Two facing him.
07:17But he still finds room and finds Andy Hunt.
07:23Jensen takes over for Charlton.
07:28Well, it was a decent effort from that range by Robinson,
07:31but in truth, I think Marpoon, the derby keeper, had it covered all the way.
07:36This angle will give us a better idea of whether that might have sneaked in.
07:40No, it was always going wide.
07:43The injured players, in evidence in the stands here,
07:46in the middle of the picture there, Daryl Powell, Franco Struppa,
07:49also there.
07:50He came close to being fit at the Belgian International today,
07:54but didn't make it in the end and may need an operation
07:57to sort out his abdominal injury.
08:01Irving Day in the foreground.
08:03First-team coach to Alan Kirbyshley at Charlton.
08:05They've left their seats in the director's box to come to pit side now.
08:13Stewart for Charlton.
08:16Oof!
08:17What a terrific effort that was.
08:19Kinsella, the derby keeper,
08:21and the first-team coach to Alan Kirbyshley at Charlton.
08:24They've left their seats in the director's box to come to pit side now.
08:30Kinsella deciding to hit it from long range
08:33and Mark Pooham equal to it again.
08:35That's the second excellent save
08:37made by Derby's Estonian international goalkeeper in this first half.
08:42And Charlton must be wondering what on earth they've got to do to score here.
08:47They saw the keeper
08:49twice do that now,
08:50and of course Hunt had that mis-kick inside the six-yard box.
08:55Kinsella who produced that fabulous long-range shot.
08:58Robinson turns it on to Powell.
09:05Held up well.
09:07Good-looking cross.
09:08Pooham equal to it again.
09:09They love him here,
09:11the Derby fans.
09:12Very popular figure.
09:14And gets Seth Johnson moving forward.
09:17Now Dion Burton.
09:22This is Valakari.
09:26And now Arrani up.
09:29Good build-up.
09:30Is it over-elaborate?
09:31No.
09:32It's a brilliant finish.
09:34Well, you've got to say
09:36that that was as good as anything we've seen today.
09:39Absolutely outstanding goal by Derby.
09:42It looked for a moment as though they'd overplayed it,
09:44but Valakari found the corner of the net
09:48with a superb shot.
09:50And Derby County have doubled their lead here,
09:53six minutes past half-time.
09:55Breathtaking football in the build-up.
09:57Look at that.
09:58One-twos in and around the penalty area
10:00and as accurate a finish as you could ever wish to see.
10:06Well, Cholt must be absolutely gutted
10:09at the way this first half has gone.
10:18Great control there by Sturridge.
10:20He just brought that one out of the corner.
10:22Oh, great control there by Sturridge.
10:23He just brought that one out of the sky.
10:29Whoops.
10:30He couldn't pick that one up.
10:31Dean Carney had come back to it off his own player.
10:39Arrani finding Schnur.
10:45And this will be Derby's final attack of the half.
10:50Digging bottom.
10:51Can he make it a successful one?
10:58Well, it wasn't a bad effort,
11:00and nor was that early one in the seventh minute by Malcolm Christie.
11:04But the follow-up goal, the second by Simo Valakari,
11:08was truly outstanding.
11:09Mark Poohm has been that as well in the Derby goal.
11:12He gets a big cheer from the fans at half-time
11:14because he's the main reason, really,
11:16that Charlton haven't got back into the game before half-time.
11:20The score here at Pride Park, with 45 minutes still to come,
11:23Derby County 2, Charlton Athletic 0.
11:34So the entertainment value, which has been high already in this game,
11:38could even increase, with Charlton obviously now having to go for broke
11:42at 2-0 down.
11:44Undeservedly, maybe, but still, it says 2-0 on the scoreboard,
11:48and that's all that matters.
12:14Here's Dean Sturridge for Derby.
12:16Another good ball down the centre.
12:21And that's going to be a corner, one by Rory Diller.
12:40Well, it wasn't a bad effort by Higginbottom.
12:47That was underneath the ball, and it was always going to end up
12:51going where it did, over the crossbar.
13:00Cool play by Mark Poohm, and good football to come from that
13:04deep defensive position.
13:05The crowd enjoying that, Seth Johnson.
13:08Outstanding move that led, of course, to Derby's second goal.
13:11I wonder if this is the prelude to another.
13:17Well, it was an ambitious effort by Rory Diller.
13:25He can, however, take a deflection off the boot of Kinsella,
13:28so it's a corner.
13:36Going to be an in-swinger from Johnson.
13:40Here's Beale a chance to get it clear for Charlton.
13:43And a good ball for Jenson.
13:46This looks promising for Charlton.
13:48Johansson for them.
13:50Can they get enough players forward quickly enough?
13:52They can, and they've got one goal back through Jenson.
13:56He started the move and he finished it off,
13:59and Johansson played his part,
14:01and Charlton have got a glimmer of hope now.
14:0414 minutes into the second half,
14:06and deservedly so, I have to say,
14:08they've at last made an impact on the scoreline.
14:12Lovely ball by Jenson.
14:14Johansson picked him out with the return,
14:17and even the excellent Mark Poon couldn't save that.
14:23Charlton's record signing
14:25has got them back into this game with a vengeance now.
14:30Derby County 2.
14:32Charlton, that's it.
14:34Derby County 2.
14:36Charlton, that's it.
14:37Just under an hour gone.
14:39Game on, I think.
14:42And Derby must suddenly be getting a little concerned.
14:50But they've got goals,
14:51a vital moment in this game, the home team.
14:54Can they do so again?
15:04A real wrestling match going on there
15:06between Christie and Rufus.
15:09And in the end, almost inevitably,
15:12it's a free kick.
15:20In fact, when you look at it again there,
15:21initially it was Christie holding Richard Rufus
15:24rather than the other way around.
15:26So I think he's unlucky to have been cautioned for that,
15:29the Charlton defender,
15:31who's playing his 250th game for the club today.
15:33Now, Kinkladze about to make an entrance.
15:36It looks like the man he'll replace
15:38is Derby's longer serving player,
15:41Dean Sturridge.
15:45Another who's been out injured,
15:47made his first start in the midweek game
15:49against Middlesbrough,
15:50now makes way for Kinkladze,
15:52who came back as a substitute in that game
15:55after his hernia operation.
15:57A player they signed from Ajax, remember?
16:00After his three years at Manchester City
16:02and sold him for a lot of money, in fact, to Holland.
16:07And an early opportunity for Rory Dillard
16:11to restore Derby's two-goal lead.
16:15Charlton Court lacking in concentration a little bit
16:18from the quickly taken free kick.
16:24Didn't look as though they were expecting this.
16:28Derby lead 2-1,
16:30but it's a very different proposition
16:32and it could be even better for Charlton here.
16:34Johansson has brought them level.
16:37Two goals in the space of three minutes for Charlton Athletic.
16:40They've turned the game on its head.
16:46And the lively combination of the two Scandinavians
16:51have brought Charlton back into the picture here.
16:55Hunt with the initial header on,
16:56it was a real route one goal.
16:58Mark Pooh must have thought he'd kept out the initial effort
17:01from Jonathan Johansson,
17:03but he could do nothing as he was grounded
17:05and could only watch Johansson finish it off.
17:09Splendid header by Hunt that carved open Derby's defence,
17:14not for the first time it has to be said today.
17:18And Derby County, the comeback kings themselves this season,
17:21have got to come back again to regain the lead.
17:24And Rory Dillard had a wonderful opportunity again
17:27to do just that.
17:31Well, I did say before the kickoff,
17:33if you're a lover of efficient quality defending,
17:36this wasn't likely to be the game for you.
17:38But I'll tell you what, it's made for wonderful entertainment.
17:46Well, Jim Smith might need a long holiday after this season.
17:52The way it started, his team going two and three down
17:55and then coming back dramatically to draw level and take points.
17:59Now, after a two-nil lead, they've thrown it away.
18:09Arranio for Derby.
18:15Probably a bit of skill then in the middle by Malakari,
18:18whose second goal seems a long way away now for Derby County.
18:23Here's Kinkladze.
18:26Kinkladze took control.
18:33It's the goalkeeper's second season with Charlton.
18:35They signed him from Bury, a very experienced keeper he is.
18:46And the balancers just for the last few minutes
18:48swung back in Derby's favour, it seems, in terms of possession.
18:51Maybe this is one of the reasons why this little fella on the ball now, Kinkladze.
18:57Clever ball too for Christie, who's turned brilliantly!
19:00Well, that was fine skill by Christie.
19:03Couldn't finish it, but got himself into a shooting position very cleverly here.
19:18Jenson.
19:22Well, he held the shirt of his opponent, no doubt about that.
19:26Now Dion Burton, and a chance for Derby to break quickly here.
19:29Charlton furiously getting men back.
19:35Played by hand ball, not been given.
19:37Kinkladze's there again.
19:39And Burton goes in.
19:40Goalkeeper did well then.
19:44And he certainly had to do something here, the goalkeeper.
19:47Couldn't leave it to the defender.
20:02Well, that's a great ball into the middle.
20:05Christie, he just...
20:08Well, that's a great ball into the middle.
20:11Christie, he just got there, though.
20:16Konchesky closing him down quickly.
20:19Higginbottom for Derby.
20:30And now Stefano Arranio, that's a good ball.
20:38Clever skill again from Malakadi this time.
20:45That plays one in.
20:49Llori de la P still there again.
20:52Claim for offside, but it's not been given.
20:55Took a bit of a risk there.
20:57Charlton have conceded a corner.
21:01Kinkladze will take it.
21:07Frank Staats made his way forward.
21:14The goalkeeper got a clattering, but more importantly,
21:18for his team, put his hands to the ball.
21:23Great skill again from Kinkladze.
21:25Oh, that's a lovely ball.
21:27Now then, the challenge was interesting by Kinsella.
21:31There was a huge appeal from the crowd,
21:35more than the Derby County players.
21:38But no penalty has been given.
21:41The crowd very angry still.
21:43And another chance.
21:45Now that's a foul on the goalkeeper, for sure, by Christie.
21:49He perhaps just needs a bit of a break.
21:51Now that's a foul on the goalkeeper, for sure, by Christie.
21:54He perhaps just lost his temper there because
21:57Derby didn't get the penalty they felt they should have had.
22:01Let's have another look at the penalty claim here.
22:05Well, he certainly had his legs taken by Kinsella.
22:10And you've got to say, Derby have got a very strong claim here.
22:14A very good case.
22:15Kinsella was caught by Erranio's change of direction.
22:21The referee didn't see it as a foul, didn't see it as a penalty.
22:30It's Derby forcing the issue at the moment.
22:35Maricardi for them.
22:37Christie.
22:39Kinkladze.
22:41Kinkladze.
22:44Clever.
22:46Very clever.
22:48And a good ball too.
22:51Well, the shot that ended that excellent move by Erranio.
22:56Well over the top, but once again a lovely example of the close control
23:02and ability of the little Georgian Kinkladze.
23:06That's a good ball again to kick out Johansson.
23:11Powell.
23:13Plenty in the box here and a dangerous cross and it's come out to Jensen.
23:17Oh, that was a chance and he knows it.
23:20It could have been the winner.
23:23Mark Poon and everyone else in the white of Derby County very relieved here.
23:41Well, Pragstad's come full once again.
23:44We're into the last minute of stoppage time now.
23:47Can Derby force another dramatic late goal as they've done so often this season?
23:54Seth Johnson turning it back in, away by Kyle Tyler.
23:58Kinkladze pumps it back into the danger area.
24:01Powell's clearance has gone skywards.
24:03The goalkeeper's got to come and get that and has dropped it.
24:06Well, the drama was in the first minute of this game
24:08and it's gone all the way to the 90th as well and it's still not finished
24:12as Lisby gets there for Charlton.
24:15Balacar is shepherding out towards the corner flag
24:19and then held his hand in his face.
24:22Although the initial foul might have been on him rather than by him.
24:27This is just about it.
24:31And there in depth is the final whistle
24:34and Jim Smith whose side has come back from the dead three times
24:38already this season now find themselves on the receiving end of a comeback.
24:43Having led 2-0 at half time, goals by Jensen and Johansson
24:47brought Charlton back into the match in the second half.
24:50There could have been a winner for either side
24:53in that dramatic last 15 minutes or so
24:56but I think justice has been done.
24:58For my money a draw, a fair result here.
25:00The final score at Pride Park today, Derby County 2, Charlton Athletic 2.
25:06So a match of inspired selections by both managers.
25:10Jonathan Johansson and Malcolm Christie justifying the faith shown in them.
25:15It was the Charlton fans who went home happier though
25:18and they had more to celebrate during the course of the season.
25:21The addicts climbed to ninth by May while Derby County
