00:00Today, we're going to learn about subtracting zero.
00:04How to do subtraction problems that have the number zero in them.
00:12Before we can start subtracting with the number zero, we need to know what subtracting means.
00:18So what does subtracting mean?
00:20Well, subtracting is when we take numbers away.
00:27Let's look at a quick example.
00:29This is little Billy, and little Billy has two fish, but you know, his buddy doesn't
00:35have one, so he gives one of the fish away.
00:39He subtracts one of the fish.
00:42He had two, and he took away one.
00:44He took away one of the fish, and now how many fish does he have after subtracting one?
00:52Yeah, he only has one fish left.
00:56He had two fish, and he subtracted one fish, took one fish away, and now he just has one.
01:07Subtracting then is taking numbers away.
01:11Now how do we subtract the number zero?
01:17First we have to find out what is zero.
01:21What does the number zero mean?
01:25Zero means there aren't any.
01:28It means none.
01:29There aren't any.
01:33Look at this collection we have here.
01:36How many birds are there?
01:38One.
01:39Good.
01:40How many dinosaurs are there?
01:43What?
01:44You don't see any?
01:46That means we have zero dinosaurs.
01:49How many teddy bears do we have?
01:52Two.
01:54Great.
01:56How many snakes are there?
01:59What?
02:00You don't see any?
02:01That means there are zero snakes.
02:03There aren't any.
02:05How many dogs are there?
02:07Yeah, there's one dog.
02:11How many polar bears are there?
02:14Zero.
02:15There aren't any.
02:19You see, zero is fun.
02:21It means there are none.
02:26That rhymed, didn't it?
02:27It's pretty cool.
02:28If you want to say it along with me, you can.
02:31Zero is fun.
02:32It means there are none.
02:35If zero means there aren't any, then that means when you subtract zero, you take away
02:43nothing.
02:44And we're going to show you that with some subtraction problems.
02:49Here's our first one.
02:51Two minus zero.
02:52What would that be?
02:55It would be two, because when you subtract zero, it takes nothing away.
02:59Two minus zero is two.
03:04How about this one?
03:06Seven minus zero.
03:09What would that be?
03:10It would be seven, because you're taking nothing away.
03:14Seven minus zero is seven.
03:18Here's the next one.
03:19Twelve minus zero.
03:21You should be getting the hang of it now.
03:24What would that be?
03:25Yes, it would be twelve, because you're subtracting zero.
03:29Twelve minus zero is twelve.
03:34This one looks big, but it's just as easy as the other ones.
03:37What's two hundred minus zero?
03:40Yes, two hundred minus zero is two hundred, because you're taking zero away.
03:48Good job!
03:50It's so cool.
03:51When you subtract zero, the number always stays the same.
03:56It's so simple, so easy, and so much fun.
04:01Remember, subtracting zero is fun.
04:04It stays the same, because you are subtracting none.
04:08Thank you so much for watching this, and we hope to see you next time.
