At UNGA, Malaysia FM promotes 'peaceful coexistence' in South China Sea

Malaysia's foreign minister embraced a conciliatory tone on the South China Sea while addressing the United Nations General Assembly Saturday, September 28.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, including the atoll, coveted for its bountiful fish stocks and stunning turquoise lagoon, despite overlapping claims in the busy waterway by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

In speaking to the 79th General Assembly, Malaysian Foreign Minister, Mohamad Hasan, said the region, "must collectively pursue a different vision.... I call upon all countries to abide by the UN clause in the conduct of maritime governance. We must prioritize peaceful coexistence."

00:00We must collectively pursue a different vision of the South China Sea,
00:04a future in which this region is a zone of peace, stability and cooperation.
00:11We must adopt a collaborative approach, embedded in diplomacy and dialogue.
00:17Thus, I call upon all countries to abide by the UNCLOS in the conduct of maritime governance.
00:23We must prioritise peaceful coexistence.
00:27This is also one of the many reasons the Member States must continue to work together.
00:33We stand at a critical juncture in world history,
00:37on the failure of global governance to address the genocide of Palestinians.
00:42And it has echoed across the world on the abysmal response by world leaders to end these horrendous crimes.
00:50Yet, there are also many of us who have pursued justice for the people of Gaza,
00:56For almost one year now, we have raised our voices in protest and sought to establish a ceasefire.
01:04Again and again, our voices have been shut down in the Security Council through the power of veto.
01:14The mechanisms of Security Council have been abused to enable mass atrocities.
01:20Our failure to establish a ceasefire is no longer justifiable.
01:25We have run out of excuses, Mr President.
01:29It is time to address the problem.
01:32The veto should not be exercised at will.
01:35There must be interceptions in cases of crimes against humanity and attacks of civilian infrastructure.
01:44We must commit ourselves towards a reformed United Nations.
01:49Justice begins with ending impunity and ensuring accountability.
01:55For this to be realised, the undemocratic veto must be limited or abolished altogether.
