00:18on the Lebanese front, which involves a limited armed incursion to southern Lebanon.
00:27Heads of state and other officials from countries and international organizations are already
00:30in Mexico to participate in the inauguration of Klaxoyen Pound.
00:39The Bolivian government decrees a national disaster due to the unprecedented forest fires
00:43affecting above all Santa Cruz department.
00:55Hello and welcome from the south, I'm Rubius Alberto Matos from the Lesos studios in Havana,
01:00Cuba.
01:01We begin with the news.
01:19Israel's political military cabinet gave the go-ahead for the next phase of the operation
01:22on the Lebanese front, which involves a limited armed incursion to southern Lebanon.
01:26Previously, the Israeli army declared a closed military zone in a part of the territory along
01:30the border with Lebanon.
01:32Simultaneously, Israel is shelling the border regions of the country with artillery.
01:36Since September 23rd, Israel has been carrying out massive aerial bombardments against Lebanon,
01:41which in less than a week, according to the UN, have left at least 700 dead, thousands
01:45wounded and more than 1 million displaced.
01:53The Lebanese resistance movement, Hezbollah, attacked Mossad headquarters near Tel Aviv
01:57and other points in Israel.
01:58Hezbollah announced the attack with 54 missiles on the Kilot base of the Israeli military
02:03intelligence unit 8200 at the Mossad headquarters, which is located on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.
02:11So far, 50 missile launches have been carried out from Lebanon, the last of which hit the
02:16central region and forced thousands of Israelis to take refuge.
02:20According to local media, six wounded are reported as a result of the Hezbollah attack
02:23in response to the aggressions against Lebanon and the genocide in Gaza.
02:32And on Monday, a United Nations report said that more than 1 million people have been
02:36displaced across Lebanon due to ongoing Israeli bombardment as tensions continue over a full-scale
02:41aggression.
02:42Filippo Grandi, the High Commissioner of the UN Refugee Agency, stated in his profile on
02:46the social media X that around 100,000 refugees have arrived in Syria and that the outflow
02:52continues.
02:53Grandi also stressed that the agency's teams, together with the Syrian Red Crescent, are
02:57deployed at four border crossings inside Syria to support new arrivals.
03:02According to the Syrian Red Crescent, more than 60 percent of the people arriving at
03:05the Syrian border crossings are children.
03:13And at least 13 people were killed in an Israeli bombing raid on the Nusayr al-Refugee camp
03:17in the central Gaza Strip.
03:19Medical sources report that 13 civilians, mostly children and women, were killed, dozens
03:23injured, and several more are reported missing after occupation warplanes attacked two homes
03:28in the Nusayr al-Refugee camp.
03:30Ambulances arrived at the scene of the attack and rescuers removed the bodies from the building,
03:35some of them badly mangled, wrapping them in blankets.
03:38Likewise, survivors had difficulty identifying some bodies heavily mangled in the attack.
03:42Moreover, bystanders helped transport the dead to ambulances.
03:45The remains arrived at the health unit in Deir al-Bala in central Gaza.
03:55UNICEF spokesperson in the Palestinian Territory, Jonathan Crix, reported that thousands of
04:00children in the Gaza Strip are in a dangerous and extremely vulnerable situation due to
04:04constant Israeli aggressions.
04:06According to Crix, children are forced to contribute to their families' substance ends.
04:11The spokesman said that due to the attacks perpetrated by the Zionist Israeli army, it
04:15is estimated that approximately 19,000 children have been separated from one or both parents.
04:20Lastly, the UNICEF member assured that despite the fact that many children will return to
04:24school after one year, 85% of the school buildings in the region have been destroyed, preventing
04:30625,000 children from attending school.
04:38So when we are in Gaza, you see children everywhere, and actually this is a very high concern because
04:46it's a consequence of the fact that they're not attending school and that they have to
04:50contribute to the family's shul.
04:52Meanwhile in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on September 30th for the United
04:56Nations General Assembly to urgently consider using force in Gaza, invoking the 1950 Uniting
05:02for Peace resolution.
05:04Today, protecting Palestine and Lebanon means protecting humanity, protecting peace and
05:14the culture of coexistence of difference.

05:26Welcome back.
05:45Heads of state and other officials from countries and international organizations are waiting
05:50in Mexico to participate in the inauguration of Klaus Schoenbaum, the first woman to assume
05:54the presidency of the nation on October 1st.
05:57In the morning of Monday, the president of Brazil, Luis Inácio Da Silva, arrived in
06:02the North American nation, followed by his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and
06:05the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, who arrived in the afternoon.
06:09The Honduran foreign minister, Enrique Reyna, and the president of the Haitian Presidential
06:13Transition Council, Regin Abraham, also landed in Mexico.
06:17More than 16 international leaders have confirmed their participation in the historic event
06:21that will take place on Tuesday, October 1st.
06:24Social movements, indigenous peoples and representatives of international progressivism will also be
06:29present in the swearing-in ceremony.
06:36And the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, offered on Monday his last
06:40message as head of state at the National Palace.
06:42The Mexican president thanked the journalists who attended his daily morning conferences
06:46while highlighting that president-elect Klaus Schoenbaum will continue with this initiative.
06:51López Obrador assured that during his six-year term, he dedicated himself to serve the people
06:56through the implementation of his social programs, where the most needed were taken as a priority.
07:01He also emphasized that his government objective did not remain as promises since they became
07:05a reality, since poverty and social inequality were reduced.
07:09López Obrador's administration will end on October 1st once his successor, Claudia
07:13Schoenbaum, receives the presidential sash that will allow her to govern until 2030.
07:21On October 1st, Claudia Schoenbaum will become the first woman constitutional president of
07:29Mexico.
07:30Everything is ready for the ceremony.
07:32What will the protocol be like?
07:33Our correspondent Daniel Rosa has the information.
07:39With a popularity rating of more than 70 percent, Claudia Schoenbaum will receive the presidential
07:43sash this Tuesday and will be sworn in before the constitution, officially beginning her
07:47six-year term.
07:48Why didn't a woman become president 20 or 40 or 50 years ago?
07:59Because our society had very different characteristics of structure, hierarchy and patriarchy that
08:05have been somewhat diluted but have not disappeared.
08:13It took 200 years of independent Mexico and 65 holders of the executive power to have
08:17the first female president, a female, as Schoenbaum emphasizes.
08:22That a woman reaches a government or a position of responsibility does not in itself guarantee
08:27a different exercise of power.
08:30But I would like to take the phrase, time of women, in its plural sense.
08:38Phrase used by the next president, who will receive from López Obrador the leadership
08:41of the country for the next six years.
08:46I'm also very happy because I'm going to hand over the presidential sash to an exceptional
08:52woman, to a humanist.
08:59The chamber of deputies already has security measures in place to receive heads of state
09:03and representatives from other countries invited to the ceremony, who have arrived since the
09:08weekend to witness the beginning of a new era.
09:12I am ready.
09:14I am strong people are ready to begin the second stage of the fourth transformation
09:19of Mexico's public life.
09:25This October 1st, Claudia Schoenbaum will become the 27th woman president in the world,
09:30the first in Mexico and North America.
09:32In the afternoon, she will meet with the people in the Zócalo, in Mexico City, before giving
09:36her first morning conference and going to the southern state of Guerrero, to supervise
09:40support for those affected by Hurricane John.
09:51In other news, a press conference of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela was held on Monday,
09:55led by the first vice president of that party, Diosdado Cabello.
09:58The press conference took place in Caracas, with the first vice president of the PSUV,
10:03Diosdado Cabello, for details on the governmental agenda of the national executive, as well
10:08as the great progress of the policies implemented.
10:10While overcarrying the electoral victory of President Nicolás Maduro, while assuring
10:14that on January 10th, the Venezuelan leader will be sworn in as president of this nation,
10:18in line with the constitution.
10:21In this sense, he highlighted the support that the Venezuelan people have shown to President
10:24Nicolás Maduro in the face of the struggles against the interference of the U.S. government
10:29and the European Union.
10:36The National Federation of Secondary Education Teachers of Uruguay, FENAPES, is carrying
10:41out since Monday a 48-hour strike in high schools for labor claims.
10:46Schools will be without classes and teachers will mobilize on Tuesday and Wednesday against
10:50decisions of the educational authorities that affect education and the working conditions
10:53of teachers.
10:54The leader of FENAPES, Emilio Mandacen, said that the Union Assembly decided to stop work
11:00in view of the position of the National Administration of Public Education in the middle of negotiations
11:04between the parties.
11:06He declared that there is a profound adjustment, a negotiation that was being done in good
11:10faith, and now a group of adjustments is emerging.
11:19And in France, journalist Julian Assange affirmed before the Council of Europe in Strasbourg
11:24that if he is free, it is because he declared himself guilty of having done journalism.
11:29In his first statements after spending 12 years in the maximum security prison of Belmarsh
11:33in the United Kingdom, Assange pointed out that his agreement with the U.S. justice system
11:37prevents him from denouncing the country in relation to his extradition request, as well
11:41as requesting information about the events that took place.
11:44The WikiLeaks founder's statements came a day before the Assembly of the Council of
11:49Europe votes on a resolution that dubs him as a political prisoner and warns about the
11:53deterrent effect that his arrest could have had on the journalism profession.
12:02Ladies and gentlemen, the transition from years of confinement in a maximum security
12:09prison to being here before the representatives of 46 nations and 700 million people is a
12:15profound and a surreal shift.
12:20The experience of isolation for years in a small cell is difficult to convey.
12:27It strips away one's sense of self, leaving only the raw essence of existence.
12:33I am yet not fully equipped to speak about what I have endured, the relentless struggle
12:42to stay alive, both physically and mentally.
12:47In addition, Assange reaffirmed that his freedom does not imply that the system worked, since
12:51it had to plead guilty for the fact of doing journalism and denouncing U.S. war crimes.
12:58Justice for me is now precluded as the U.S. government insisted in writing into its plea
13:05agreement that I cannot file a case at the European Court of Human Rights or even a Freedom
13:11of Information Act request over what it did to me as a result of its extradition request.
13:19I want to be totally clear.
13:22I am not free today because the system worked.
13:25I am free today, after years of incarceration, because I pled guilty to journalism.

14:08Welcome back.
14:09On Monday, the Bolivian government decreed a national disaster due to the unprecedented
14:13forest fires that are affecting above all Santa Cruz, the richest and most populated
14:17department in the country.
14:18President Luis Arce signed the regulation because of the magnitude of the impact of
14:22the damage caused by the presence of fires in the national territory.
14:26The decree will make it possible to channel international aid and transfer economic resources
14:29from the central government to the departmental governments.
14:32The last official report of the executive branch from early September warned that 3.8
14:37million hectares of forests and pastures have been destroyed in the country.
14:43We have approved this decree number, 5235, which is the national disaster declaration,
15:00so that we can activate everything in our hands to be able to deal with the fires.
15:08The National Water and Sewerage Agency declared on Monday a critical situation due to drought
15:13in the Xingu River basin, one of the main tributaries of the Amazon River.
15:18The government communicated that the management of the National Water and Sewerage Agency
15:22approved the declaration of a critical situation of quantitative scarcity of water resources
15:26in the Xingu River stretch and its federal tributary, the Iberia River.
15:31The decision was approved with the intention of increasing water security in the region
15:35and mitigating the impacts of low river levels on water use.
15:39The agency also reported that the lack of rainfall affected the levels in the Xingu basin,
15:45especially in the Alta Mera section.
15:52In the United States, a confirmed death toll in six southeastern states in the wake of
15:57Hurricane Helene reached 119 on Monday, and the number is expected to continue to increase.
16:03According to local news, the toll was expected to rise further on Monday as emergency responders
16:08continue search-and-rescue efforts in western North Carolina, where floodwaters wiped out
16:14entire neighborhoods and knocked out phone service.
16:17In other states, such as Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee, high winds
16:22and torrential rains pummeled towns and cities, where homes were destroyed, roads flooded,
16:28and power cut off to millions.
16:36On Tuesday, the Swiss delegation will take over the presidency of the UN Security Council
16:40for the second time since its position as a non-permanent member.
16:43The European nation will succeed Slovenia at the helm of the agency in parallel with
16:48widespread discussions on the need to reform it.
16:50In accordance with the demands of the international community, the reconfiguration of the Council
16:54should include countries from Africa, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific regions that are
16:59underrepresented as a result of the configuration inherited from the 1940s.
17:03This year, Algeria, the Republic of Korea, Guyana, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia started
17:07a new mandate until 2025, while Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland will complete
17:13their non-permanent membership in December.
17:21In India, long lines formed on October 1st at voting centers in Srinagar and five other
17:25districts for the second phase of regional elections, the first in Kashmir for a decade.
17:31Voting began at 700 hours local time at election centers spread across 26 constituencies in
17:37the region.
17:38According to Jammu and Kashmir election authorities, nearly 37 percent of eligible voters had cast
17:43their ballots by 1300 hours local time.
17:47India and Kashmir has been the scene of an armed insurgency and election boycott since
17:521989.
17:53So far, the second phase of the election has been carried out normally without incidents
17:56amidst strong security measures and in the presence of international observers.
18:09We are voting for the restoration of statehood.
18:12This is our first demand.
18:14It is our right.
18:16Ours was a special state.
18:18Laws like Article 370 and 35A that prevented outsiders from buying land have been abolished
18:26by the parliament.
18:28We will urge the parliament to give us back our statehood.
18:35The urgent need is for the statehood to be restored.
18:39Only when we will elect our members to the assembly will they be able to get it back.
18:45And about 123,000 people participated on October 1st in the flag-raising ceremony
18:50in Tiananmen Square and commemorated the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's
18:55Republic of China.
18:56As part of the National Day celebration, Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier highlighted the
19:00country's achievements in a speech at the Great Hall of the People, a political administrative
19:05center.
19:06Xi Jinping emphasized that the country's main goal in the new era is to advance in
19:09the construction of a strong nation and national rejuvenation through Chinese-style modernization.
19:15Likewise, he insisted on the need to deepen reforms, promote openness, and focus on high-quality
19:20development.
19:21At this, we have come to the end of this newsbrief.
19:30You can find this and many other stories on our website, terrestrialenglish.net, and you
