Michael Gove talks to Mark Andrews about the leadership speeches at the Conservative conference
Transcript
00:00Well, there were four strong speeches. I think the two strongest were James Cleverley's
00:04and Kemi Beydinoff's. I think they were the people with the greatest emotional connection
00:09in the hall. But it will certainly be the case that MPs will have a lot to think about
00:13in the next few weeks because all four candidates gave strong pitches.
00:18What would you say were the highlights for you? What were the strongest points?
00:22I think James Cleverley's invocation of Ronald Reagan and optimism and Kemi Beydinoff's
00:27determination to tell the truth and to show no fear. Those were the strong messages that
00:30came through to me.
00:32What did you think of Sir Robert Jenrick's talk about his background in the Midlands?
00:35Because there were ones who thought he was in the film profession.
00:37No, well, I have to say I actually found that quite moving. I thought that Robert Jenrick's
00:43invocation of his parents' past story, I thought was well-written and well-crafted and empathetic.
00:49Has any of it changed how you might vote, what you've seen today?
00:53No.
00:54And who will you be backing?
00:55No, I will decide in due course.
00:57OK. Thank you very much, Mark O'Gallagher. Thank you very much for your time.
