00:00These latest sweeping allegations were unveiled today.
00:03Now, prosecutors allege Trump intentionally lied in an effort to remain in power.
00:08They claim his speech on January 6th was intended to inflame his supporters.
00:13Prosecutors even say Trump and his allies looked to create chaos at polling sites.
00:17All right, let's get right down to Linda Schmidt in the newsroom with the latest, including
00:20how Trump's responding to this latest round of allegations tonight.
00:22Linda.
00:23Yeah, we're going to hear about that in just a moment.
00:24But first, the special counsel submitted the 165 page document last week.
00:29It was unsealed today.
00:31Now, the purpose of the brief is to convince the judge that Donald Trump's actions were
00:35private and not official acts as president and therefore not protected by immunity.
00:42These are the most comprehensive details yet against Donald Trump and the case accusing
00:47him of plotting to overthrow the 2020 election results.
00:52Special counsel Jack Smith saying with private co-conspirators, the defendant launched a
00:57series of increasingly desperate plans to overturn the legitimate election results
01:02in seven states that he had lost.
01:05The document goes on to say when Trump's attempts to overturn the election failed, he inflamed
01:11violence, creating the tinderbox that he purposely ignited on January 6th.
01:17Smith alleges that Trump repeatedly tried to recruit Vice President Mike Pence to join
01:23in his voter fraud lies, but Pence refused.
01:28On January 6th, the rioters chanted, hang Mike Pence.
01:33The Secret Service evacuated Pence to a secure location in the U.S. Capitol for his safety.
01:40When a staff member rushed to tell President Trump, his response was so what?
01:46I think that this filing is powerful.
01:49Hofstra University law professor James Sample says the unsealing of the document is normal
01:54procedure because it is a public document.
01:58Trump allegedly told family members, it doesn't matter if you won or lost the election.
02:03You still have to fight like hell.
02:06The special counsel is trying to convince the judge that Trump's actions were personal,
02:11not official acts as president, and therefore not protected by the immunity that was granted
02:17in July by the U.S. Supreme Court.
02:20This filing lays out in great detail actions specific to Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania,
02:27Wisconsin and Nevada, in which the president was acting not as a president, not as a leader
02:34of the country, but as a desperate private actor seeking power by unlawful means.
02:42And by the way, the professor also says that Trump's lawyers reviewed that document before
02:46it was unsealed and they were able to request redactions and probably got them, which is
02:50standard procedure.
02:52Trump's lawyers also maintain that the release was meant to affect the outcome of the current
02:57election.
02:58Stephen, Natasha, back upstairs to you.
03:00All right, Linda, thank you so much.
