00:00:00Today I'm announcing the unsealing of a three-count indictment charging Sean Combs with racketeering
00:00:11conspiracy, sex trafficking, interstate transportation for prostitution.
00:00:15This is the type of indictment you would expect from someone in the mafia.
00:00:20They start making this case, in my opinion, as a takedown of a successful black man.
00:00:27Freak-offs sometimes lasted days at a time, involved multiple commercial sex workers.
00:00:32I've spoken to about a half a dozen of these different men involved, and I asked them,
00:00:38was there any indicia of lack of consent, and they said, absolutely not.
00:00:45And they seized cases and cases of the kinds of personal lubricant and baby oil that Combs'
00:00:50staff allegedly used to stock hotel rooms for the freak-offs, more than 1,000 bottles
00:00:56altogether.
00:00:57How do you explain 1,000 bottles of baby oil?
00:01:00He has a big house.
00:01:01He buys in bulk.
00:01:02You know, I think they have Costco's in every place where he has a home.
00:01:04Have you sat in the parking lot of a Costco and seen what people walk out of there with?
00:01:09Not 1,000 bottles of baby oil.
00:01:13When I saw the video with Cassie running for her life, I cried my eyes out.
00:01:23They're going to show that video over and over and over about what happens to women
00:01:28that won't change their stories.
00:01:31Combs did not do this all on his own.
00:01:33If there are higher-up people, people that are still famous right now that are on these
00:01:39videos, Hollywood is going to just implode.
00:01:42Does this compel you to put him on the stand?
00:01:46I don't know that I could keep him off the stand.
00:01:48I think he is very eager to tell his story.
00:01:58We have obtained video of Diddy's arrest on Monday night, and I have to say, he was blindsided.
00:02:06Sean Diddy Combs was taken into federal custody in New York.
00:02:11This according to TMZ.
00:02:12We were told it happened in a Midtown Manhattan hotel where Combs had been staying, and according
00:02:16to sources talking to TMZ, this actually came a day earlier than originally expected.
00:02:21The world-famous Sean Diddy Combs is expected to be arraigned on federal charges this morning
00:02:26following a grand jury indictment.
00:02:28Today, I'm announcing the unsealing of a three-count indictment, charging Sean Combs with racketeering
00:02:34conspiracy, sex trafficking, interstate transportation for prostitution.
00:02:40Among other things, he has been accused of sex trafficking, engaging in a conspiracy
00:02:48to foster prostitution, racketeering, kidnapping, narcotics offenses, arson, bribery.
00:02:56That is the beginning.
00:02:57The indictment alleges that on more than one occasion, Combs carried or brandished firearms
00:03:02to intimidate and threaten victims and witnesses.
00:03:05The indictment alleged some of Combs' employees helped set up freak-offs in which women were
00:03:09forced into sex acts with male prostitutes.
00:03:12And they seized cases and cases of the kinds of personal lubricant and baby oil that Combs'
00:03:17staff allegedly used to stock hotel rooms for the freak-offs.
00:03:21More than 1,000 bottles altogether.
00:03:23Prosecutors now say when this notorious video was taken, Cassie was actually fleeing a wild
00:03:30freak-off.
00:03:31I mean, this has gotten very, very scary.
00:03:35Hollywood's in trouble.
00:03:37Hip-hop and R&B is in trouble.
00:03:40Sean Diddy Combs has pleaded not guilty to several federal charges.
00:03:44We are learning in just the last few minutes that a federal judge is now refusing to grant
00:03:49Sean Diddy Combs bail.
00:03:51He is going to be behind bars until his trial begins, whenever that is.
00:03:56Sean Combs really fought to stay out of this place where his attorney called conditions
00:04:00horrific.
00:04:01But the judge sent him back, finding Diddy a danger to women.
00:04:05We're appealing the decision to hold him without bail.
00:04:08TMZ is also reporting Diddy was placed on suicide watch at the detention center that
00:04:13he's being held at in New York.
00:04:18Your reaction to this really stunning indictment?
00:04:21I'm very surprised, Harvey, that you say you're stunned.
00:04:24What, you need another decade of Sean, aka Puffy, aka Diddy, aka Love Combs, brutalizing
00:04:36women?
00:04:37Stunning?
00:04:38I'm only stunned it took so long.
00:04:41Diddy has dodged a lot of legal bullets in the past.
00:04:48Does this one feel different to you?
00:04:51It does.
00:04:52This one feels different.
00:04:53You know, Harvey, you don't have the feds raid your homes unless they have something
00:05:01of substance, something significant.
00:05:07Federal law enforcement agents have raided properties owned by musician and producer
00:05:12Sean Diddy Combs.
00:05:13There's got to be something there in order for them to put themselves in a position with
00:05:17someone who is so powerful, who can retaliate, who has the authority and the means to be
00:05:24able to fight cases.
00:05:26To put yourself in that position, there must be something there.
00:05:29Let's switch our focus to the government.
00:05:31In my opinion, I'm just going to say it the way it is, no friend historically of the successful
00:05:38black man.
00:05:39Okay?
00:05:40None.
00:05:41And they start making this case, in my opinion, as a takedown of a successful black man.
00:05:47I think what is interesting and what was surprising to me was when I read the indictment,
00:05:51I dissected the indictment, and I looked at count two, which is the sex trafficking count,
00:05:56the sex trafficking by force, coercion, and fraud.
00:06:00It only names one victim.
00:06:01Hey, Cassie, how are you?
00:06:02How do you feel about all the allegations with Diddy going on right now?
00:06:06And I believe that's Cassie, his longtime girlfriend.
00:06:09It only names that one victim, where there's so many women who have come forth with civil
00:06:14claims looking for money, making allegations against them now.
00:06:18There's only one named victim in that count, and that's the count that everyone seems to
00:06:22be talking about, that he's involved in sex trafficking and he's using force and coercion.
00:06:28It's one named victim in that count, and that's surprising to me, considering the amount of
00:06:33alleged victims there are in this case.
00:06:39Do you think the fact that your client is a very big celebrity played a part in the
00:06:47Fed's decision to indict him?
00:06:49I think it played the biggest part.
00:06:52I think it played a prominent part.
00:06:54I think that if he's not a big celebrity, he's just going about his life without interference
00:07:00from the U.S. government.
00:07:02Even though a lot of people now claim that they basically had knowledge of this, and
00:07:06it certainly was whispered about prior to it becoming a common knowledge, I do think
00:07:11that it's probably one of the most seismic events in the history of hip hop.
00:07:16I have never read 14 pages that contained so much shocking information and allegations.
00:07:28This is the type of indictment you would expect from someone in the mafia, not somebody who
00:07:33runs a clothing line.
00:07:35Matter of fact, you can call me Sean John.
00:07:37An alcohol brand.
00:07:38Let's be clear.
00:07:39It's a rock, it's for the culture.
00:07:44Someone who was at the top of the hip hop world.
00:07:54To hear charges of transportation, of prostitution, sex trafficking, it was pretty astonishing.
00:08:01You know, you mentioned the mafia.
00:08:04The mafia tends to operate underground.
00:08:08Diddy operated way above ground for 16 years, according to the feds.
00:08:15And there were maybe whispers about this, but none of this came to light.
00:08:22The reality is Diddy has had run-ins with the law several times, and it seems he always
00:08:28has gotten away with it.
00:08:30So this was really just a buildup.
00:08:32He was, of course, going to operate in plain sight because nothing ever happens to him
00:08:37until now.
00:08:42I guess I'd say America loves a story of a good rise.
00:08:46America loves a story of a huge fall.
00:08:49And this is certainly up there, you know, with any that we've seen.
00:08:53But you know, I certainly didn't have any of this stuff on my bingo card, covering Puffy
00:08:58for over a decade.
00:09:00There's a lot you can say about the guy, but you know, this stuff just didn't come
00:09:04up in my reporting.
00:09:05And I think it took all of us by surprise.
00:09:07Am I surprised by the allegations?
00:09:09No.
00:09:10These are rumors that have been floating around the industry for decades now.
00:09:14You know, some people have seen them firsthand.
00:09:16Some people have just heard about them, you know, directly.
00:09:19But many of us who've been in the music industry or music industry adjacent have been aware
00:09:24of Puff's behavior for many years.
00:09:28Freak-offs sometimes lasted days at a time, involved multiple commercial sex workers and
00:09:33often involved a variety of narcotics such as ketamine, ecstasy and GHB, which Combs
00:09:40distributed to the victims to keep them obedient and compliant.
00:09:44They call them freak-offs.
00:09:45But, you know, back when I was a kid in the late 70s, they were called threesomes.
00:09:50This was, you know, with the woman that was his woman at the time.
00:09:56Can I see that smile, please?
00:09:58And allegedly a third person.
00:10:00I've spoken to about a half a dozen of these different men involved.
00:10:05And I asked them, was there any indicia of lack of consent?
00:10:09And they said, absolutely not.
00:10:11We would never have gone forward a single step had it seemed like anybody in that room
00:10:16was not consenting.
00:10:18Was anyone high, too high?
00:10:20Was anyone drunk?
00:10:21No one was too high.
00:10:22No one was too drunk.
00:10:24These are genuinely threesomes.
00:10:27How do you explain a thousand bottles of baby oil?
00:10:30I don't know where the number a thousand came from.
00:10:32The U.S. attorney said it.
00:10:33I can't imagine it's thousands.
00:10:35I mean, you know, and I'm not really sure what the baby oil has to do with anything.
00:10:39They're essentially saying it's a lubricant for an orgy.
00:10:43I guess.
00:10:44I don't know what you need a thousand for.
00:10:45One bottle of baby oil goes a long way.
00:10:47I don't know what you need a thousand for.
00:10:48I mean, he has a big house.
00:10:50He buys in bulk.
00:10:51You know, I think they have Costco's in every place where he has a home.
00:10:54I mean, have you sat in a parking lot of a Costco and see what people walk out of there
00:10:58with?
00:10:59Not a thousand bottles of baby oil.
00:11:00I don't think it was a thousand.
00:11:01I think it was.
00:11:02I think it was.
00:11:03Let's just say it's a lie.
00:11:04OK?
00:11:05The U.S. attorney has said that the freak off parties are going to be the core of this
00:11:13case.
00:11:14I've covered a lot of cases in my day.
00:11:15I cannot think of a single one that is more salacious than United States versus Sean Combs.
00:11:26I cannot think of anything that even comes close.
00:11:30I can't either.
00:11:31And, you know, again, if we start hearing the details of what went down at these parties,
00:11:36I mean, I remember back in the day the allure of a ditty white party.
00:11:43We're going to hear about my party.
00:11:52They're going to be shutting them down.
00:11:53They're going to probably be arresting me, doing all types of crazy things.
00:11:57Everyone wanted to be there.
00:11:58It was so secretive.
00:11:59And to know that these parties will be on Front Street, we are going to hear what happens
00:12:04not just at these parties, but obviously these after parties.
00:12:07I kind of am hoping to hear the details, even as terrible and sordid as it may be, because
00:12:13it's astonishing that these things could be happening right underneath people's noses.
00:12:18Very famous people.
00:12:19If you don't have what they need, they're going to leave.
00:12:21Right.
00:12:22Got to keep them there.
00:12:23Right.
00:12:24You need locks on the doors.
00:12:25OK, this is sounding kind of dangerous now.
00:12:28It's a little kinky, but you know, but just check it out.
00:12:32You need a lot of heat.
00:12:34A lot of heat.
00:12:35You mean that physically the place has to be hot?
00:12:38You don't have no air conditioning.
00:12:40No air conditioning.
00:12:41Why is that?
00:12:42Heat affects the alcohol and it also affects like, you know, everybody gets a little bit
00:12:45more comfortable and loose.
00:12:46Builds up a nice little sweat.
00:12:49Do you ever see any of that in the parties that you threw or he threw?
00:12:56Did you ever get any sense of that kind of eventually evolving?
00:13:02My spidey senses were always on high alert.
00:13:05And I know that there's no safety after a certain hour when you've got drinks flowing
00:13:12and people behind your back doing drugs in bathrooms, two and three people walking out
00:13:16of a bathroom together.
00:13:19There's no safety in that.
00:13:20So do it.
00:13:21Could there could there potentially be?
00:13:23Absolutely.
00:13:24Did I see it?
00:13:25No, because I never stayed at a party late enough to see.
00:13:28Did you sense it?
00:13:29Did I sense that there could be trouble?
00:13:31There could be trouble riding on the subway.
00:13:33Yes, I sensed it.
00:13:34Yes.
00:13:35There's no way out for Diddy on this.
00:13:37I'm just telling you, there's no way out.
00:13:40All he's going to be able to do now is whine about his jail.
00:13:45He might get in a better jail.
00:13:46He's going to whine about his tuna fish sandwich and his bunk and his naughty roommate.
00:13:52Have fun with that, Diddy.
00:13:57Here's a man who has made some of the most important businesses owned by a black man.
00:14:05Run, own, created, founded.
00:14:08The vision was that of a black man.
00:14:10What have we done?
00:14:12We have reduced him, not everyone, but a large amount of our society to being a monster.
00:14:19That should make us shake in our boots.
00:14:22Down here at Pura Vida by my pad, run into the man right here.
00:14:26What's up?
00:14:27What's up?
00:14:28The indictment alleges that between at least 2008 and the present, Combs abused, threatened,
00:14:34and coerced victims to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal
00:14:40his conduct.
00:14:41This is the government scrutinizing his businesses.
00:14:44His businesses are fine.
00:14:46Scrutinizing the taxes, he pays his taxes.
00:14:48He does everything right.
00:14:49What's the last vestige?
00:14:51We're going to go into his bedroom.
00:14:53We're going to go into his bedroom because maybe we don't like the way he's having sex.
00:14:57Ste, come on, hook us up, hook a brother up, man.
00:15:01I really wanted to get somebody who is just all over this genre.
00:15:07And I want to talk to you about the whispers.
00:15:10Because according to prosecutors, this has been going on for 16 years at least.
00:15:16And yet nothing surfaced publicly until Cassie.
00:15:20So what were the whispers over the years?
00:15:24What were people saying?
00:15:25There was a lot of talk of party parties or ditty parties, as they're kind of known now.
00:15:30It was always sort of known that if you went to a party at Puff's house and were you to
00:15:34stay past certain hours, that you might be introduced to some sort of, you know, massive
00:15:40orgy.
00:15:41There was just a lot of whispers about what it might have consisted of.
00:15:44This is about we.
00:15:45This is motherfucking bad boy, bitch.
00:15:48We love everybody.
00:15:50I don't think that it was common knowledge that there was so much non-consensual stuff
00:15:54going on or any of the senior allegations, but it was definitely discussed.
00:15:59Years ago, Diddy was on Ellen DeGeneres's talk show, and she even joked about that.
00:16:05I could think of you of starting a party at like midnight.
00:16:08Like what time will it go till?
00:16:10That's a different type of party, though.
00:16:12Uh-huh.
00:16:13No, it'd go from like 930 to like maybe three o'clock to three o'clock.
00:16:17But then, you know, we have the top two floors of the hotel.
00:16:20And then it will carry on there?
00:16:22Yeah, yeah.
00:16:23No, I mean the after party.
00:16:25Mm-hmm.
00:16:26No, I know about them.
00:16:27I'll listen to the music.
00:16:31I've heard that song after parties.
00:16:35No, I mean, I think everybody knew that Diddy was a highly sexual individual and that he
00:16:43certainly was a fan of drugs in general.
00:16:52How could this go under the radar for 16 years?
00:16:56I think that Diddy, over those years, before he was apprehended, I think that it was just
00:17:01his ego just kept inflating and he kept getting away with more and more things.
00:17:05If you go back to the Shine incident, that was an incident in which he assaulted somebody
00:17:09in a nightclub in front of, you know, presumably hundreds of powerful people, influential people.
00:17:15Prosecutors then say one of Combs' associates, 19-year-old Jamal Barrow, also known as the
00:17:20rapper Shine, opened fire while Combs reportedly pulled out a pistol of his own.
00:17:25And he got away with it.
00:17:26He was able to make this young artist basically take the fall for him.
00:17:29I had nothing to do with a shooting in this club.
00:17:34I want to make this 100% clear.
00:17:37I had nothing to do with a shooting in this club.
00:17:42And I feel terrible that people were hurt that night.
00:17:47I am Natanya Rubin.
00:17:51I'm a mom.
00:17:52I'm a business owner.
00:17:54I'm a daughter.
00:17:56And I am a victim of gun violence.
00:17:59Three people inside the club were injured, two of them critically, including a young
00:18:03woman with a bullet lodged in her cheek.
00:18:06I am the woman who was shot on December 27, 1999, in Club New York by Sean Puffy Combs.
00:18:14I have said it from that day, and I will say it till I die.
00:18:19I just watched Shine and Puffy start backing back towards the door, like you would see
00:18:24in any movie when someone is backing away from a scene but reaching to their side.
00:18:29They were reaching to their side, backing away from the scene to get to the front door.
00:18:34I turned around to tell my friends, oh my God, oh my God, watch out.
00:18:38I think they're going to, you know, this is getting crazy.
00:18:40I think they're going to shoot.
00:18:41I saw the muzzle flash and the bullet slammed into my face.
00:18:44I watched them.
00:18:45I watched both of them fire their guns.
00:18:47Do you have any sense of which person fired the shot that hit you?
00:18:54Absolutely.
00:18:55Shine was closest to the bar.
00:18:56Puffy was closest to me.
00:18:58Remember one thing, this man testified to a jury in 2001, and he saw 12 New Yorkers
00:19:05look him dead in the eye and say, you're not guilty.
00:19:09Why do you think it took 16 years for authorities to really come down hard on Diddy, given what
00:19:18you say happened to you, what happened to Cassie, and what allegedly happened to many
00:19:23other people?
00:19:24There's an old adage, every dog has his day.
00:19:27This victory is not just a victory for Cassie, for Little Rod, for me, it's a victory for
00:19:31everyone who has felt the specter of violence, oppression, wickedness, evil, whatever.
00:19:39I am the fucking hardest hustler in the world.
00:19:42This is Savage Part 2.
00:19:44Don't tell me about shit.
00:19:46It's 2022 and I'm still a savage.
00:19:49Whatever I want, I get.
00:19:50Whatever I want, I fucking get.
00:19:53People were definitely talking about his, not just his emotional abuse, but his physical
00:20:01abuse, and his temper, and his anger, and his treatment of women.
00:20:05And there was a lot of rumor and a lot of fear.
00:20:09Fear of retaliation?
00:20:12Fear of retaliation, fear of reputational damage, and fear of being called inauthentic
00:20:20by a culture that, unfortunately, values sexual violence.
00:20:29The personality profile that I would assess to Puffy during the years we were working
00:20:34together was very hardworking, ingenious, creative, demanding, prone to temper tantrums
00:20:46if he didn't have his way, screamed a lot.
00:20:50Did y'all know that's the hustle?
00:20:52You make enough money to pay everybody so you don't do shit, but be as happy as you can be.
00:20:58I want to be happy.
00:20:59I paid too many people.
00:21:01I have heard that you would refer to Diddy as the problem child.
00:21:09Is that right?
00:21:10Yes, I called him my problem child.
00:21:11I used to always joke that I had the notorious B.I.G., and I had the notorious V.I.P., and
00:21:17the notorious V.I.P. is Puffy.
00:21:20I wanted everybody in the cast to get y'all right asses.
00:21:26Sean Diddy Combs was a hero to a lot of people.
00:21:29He also fed a lot of mouths, and he kept a lot of people clothed and employed.
00:21:36So people were afraid to come out and talk about it.
00:21:39I mean, I interviewed his former makeup artist, Mila Morales, who said she was horrified at
00:21:45what she heard.
00:21:46She heard him beating Cassie behind closed doors and basically got her out of there,
00:21:51packed her bags, and then took her to see a doctor.
00:21:54So I think people were afraid for their careers.
00:21:57They were afraid for their livelihoods.
00:21:58He was very quick to anger.
00:22:02He was quick to have a reaction to things.
00:22:06And he really felt that he was impenetrable.
00:22:10He felt that nobody could go after him, that nobody could take him down.
00:22:14He had a God complex.
00:22:15You know, Puffy really had a God complex.
00:22:17And that defined a lot of his interactions with people that he considered lesser than.
00:22:36Diddy was able to get away with lots of stuff for a long time for a few reasons.
00:22:41One, he was cast in the public image as the alternative to Suge Knight.
00:22:45Suge's the big bad monster.
00:22:47Diddy's the nice guy that wants to get along.
00:22:53Diddy is also quite charming.
00:22:55He will disarm you with his smile, with his conversation.
00:22:57And in my interactions with him, he's a very nice guy.
00:23:00I have nothing bad to say about him.
00:23:02I've never had a bad interaction with Diddy.
00:23:03And then there's also the fact that Diddy is quite powerful.
00:23:05What more do I have to do, man?
00:23:07Look at my hat, man.
00:23:09Look at my hat.
00:23:10Look how I show up on the Amalfi Coast beat.
00:23:13Am I letting y'all down?
00:23:15Let me know.
00:23:16Am I not representing y'all the right way?
00:23:18You know what I'm saying?
00:23:19The fuck?
00:23:20The fuck?
00:23:24New surveillance footage obtained exclusively by CNN
00:23:27appears to corroborate some of the allegations of abuse
00:23:30against music mogul Sean Diddy Combs.
00:23:33The video, captured on multiple cameras,
00:23:35shows Combs wearing only a towel,
00:23:38assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura
00:23:41in a hallway at a Los Angeles hotel in March 2016.
00:23:45I think the Cassie video was the moment
00:23:47where everybody in hip-hop basically had to stop
00:23:50pretending that this was all a witch hunt.
00:23:52I think that there was a strong incentive
00:23:55for a lot of people to basically say,
00:23:57well, Diddy, he's a sexual guy.
00:23:59He's a freaky guy.
00:24:01He may or may not be bisexual.
00:24:03But was he an abuser?
00:24:05Was he a monster?
00:24:06No way, I don't believe that.
00:24:07But then when you see that video,
00:24:08it's kind of hard to imagine this guy
00:24:10actually having a sane, rational, normal sex life
00:24:15when you could witness him behaving in such a way
00:24:19to his longtime girlfriend.
00:24:20So I think that when that tape hit,
00:24:22it really kind of changed the game.
00:24:24But we are able to shun him,
00:24:27and he should be treated like the leper,
00:24:30the social leper and criminal he is.
00:24:33We saw him commit assault.
00:24:36When I saw the video with Cassie running for her life,
00:24:42I cried my eyes out
00:24:45and wondered how she got there
00:24:50and how he got to a place
00:24:54where he could brutalize someone in that way
00:24:57and think that he could get away with it.
00:25:04When I got the nerve to really watch it and analyze it,
00:25:09I was stricken with how easily he delivered the blows.
00:25:15As Ventura lies on the ground,
00:25:17Combs then kicks her twice.
00:25:19Anybody who has watched that video,
00:25:21and I imagine millions of people have watched that video,
00:25:24you can't watch it and think that is a man
00:25:27that has compassion,
00:25:29that is a man that treats women well.
00:25:31There's no excuse for anything that happened on that video,
00:25:35and he's going to have a hard time convincing anyone
00:25:38especially a jury,
00:25:40that he's a stand-up guy and has been for years
00:25:43and that was just a one-off thing.
00:25:46I think that it is game over.
00:25:49There may have been a path forward before we saw him in action,
00:25:52but now that we've seen him physically assault Cassie,
00:25:56I just don't see how any of us can erase that from our minds.
00:25:59Mr. Combs himself went publicly and apologized for the video,
00:26:04and it was hard to watch for him.
00:26:06It was hard to watch for me.
00:26:08It's hard to watch for anyone.
00:26:10That being said, it is not evidence of sex trafficking.
00:26:15There was a certain level of toxicity and drug use
00:26:20in the 10-year relationship between Mr. Combs
00:26:24and the woman that he was in love with,
00:26:27very much in love with,
00:26:28and who was very much in love with him
00:26:30for a period of 10 years.
00:26:32Their difficulties did not stem from their intimate time together.
00:26:37Their difficulties stemmed from the fact that
00:26:40she was cheating on him and he was cheating on her.
00:26:44And what we see in that video is terrible,
00:26:48it's unforgivable, and we don't seek to forgive it.
00:26:52But it's not related to the charge.
00:26:55There were the folks who would say,
00:26:57what was she doing?
00:26:58Anybody who's accused of beating a woman
00:27:00or putting their hands on a woman,
00:27:01we don't know what she was doing before that
00:27:04to cause him to do that.
00:27:05Well, there's nothing that you can do
00:27:08to cause someone to react that way.
00:27:09No one deserves to be beaten like that.
00:27:12What's up?
00:27:13What's up, Diddy?
00:27:14How you doing, man?
00:27:15How you doing, man?
00:27:16Do you think the defense will try and argue to the judge
00:27:22that the Cassie video is so incendiary,
00:27:28so inflammatory, so prejudicial,
00:27:31that he couldn't get a fair trial if the jury absorbs it,
00:27:37so that they would try to keep it out
00:27:39because it's simply too prejudicial?
00:27:42Is that something they would argue,
00:27:44and is it something that would fly?
00:27:46You're a lawyer, huh?
00:27:48So that's the great argument, Harvey.
00:27:50So yes, that's something that they would argue,
00:27:52that's something that they definitely will argue,
00:27:54I would argue it,
00:27:55because it's not tied into these freak-offs.
00:27:57This whole thing is about these sex romps,
00:28:01the sex trafficking.
00:28:02That's an isolated incident that has nothing to do
00:28:05with the sex trafficking, these freak-offs,
00:28:08the prostitution, the lack of consent for sex,
00:28:13the coercion.
00:28:14That is a fight between a couple,
00:28:16an ugly fight between a couple.
00:28:17And like you just said,
00:28:18that will inflame the passions of a jury.
00:28:21Anyone who looks at that is disgusted.
00:28:23I'm disgusted looking at that.
00:28:25How do you hit a woman?
00:28:26I mean, it's just, to me, it's a horrible thing,
00:28:29and it will, the prejudicial value
00:28:31will clearly outweigh the probative value
00:28:34in this instance.
00:28:35Will the judge preclude it?
00:28:37Probably not, the way things have been going for him,
00:28:39because the prosecution is going to argue
00:28:41it's a pattern of his behavior,
00:28:43including violent behavior that he employed against women.
00:28:49The Cassie video was such a big deal,
00:28:51but really, him throwing his girlfriend on the ground
00:28:55in the hotel hallway,
00:28:57that kind of pales in comparison
00:28:58to a lot of the things that have been alleged
00:29:00in this indictment.
00:29:01So if there's further video footage,
00:29:04and presumably there's a lot of this footage,
00:29:08it's going to be crazy.
00:29:10Harvey, talk about the Cassie video
00:29:13being inflammatory to a jury.
00:29:16Wait till they see the freak-off videos, okay?
00:29:20Cassie Ventura video, that's child's play
00:29:24compared to what they're going to see
00:29:26in freak-off videos.
00:29:33R&B singer Cassie has accused hip-hop mogul
00:29:36Sean Diddy Combs of rape
00:29:38and a decade of physical abuse.
00:29:40The two were romantically involved for years,
00:29:43but in a lawsuit, Cassie says there was
00:29:45a pattern of control, drug use,
00:29:48and forced sexual encounters.
00:29:51I find it unbelievable that Diddy
00:29:56did not settle that lawsuit
00:29:59before it got filed,
00:30:00and especially knowing that there was surveillance video
00:30:06of the incident in 2016,
00:30:09that if he would have settled with her,
00:30:12we may not be talking about this today.
00:30:15Cassie is the one that opened Pandora's box,
00:30:18and had she just gotten the money, gone away,
00:30:23Diddy might be a free man today.
00:30:25I have to imagine when Diddy woke up
00:30:28in his jail cell that first day,
00:30:30he thought, why didn't I just take the deal?
00:30:33Because exactly that.
00:30:34If he had just settled,
00:30:36we probably would have never known
00:30:38any of this went down.
00:30:39So for us, it's a blessing,
00:30:41because if he is found guilty of all of the things
00:30:44that are alleged in this indictment,
00:30:46we don't want a person like that
00:30:48walking around in society.
00:30:53Main emotion I always get when I see a man
00:30:56putting hands on a woman in this way
00:30:58is just disgust and disappointment.
00:31:00Like, you know, yeah, Diddy needed his ass beat.
00:31:02I wish Cassie would have had a gun on her
00:31:04and would have shot him right there on the spot.
00:31:10Honestly, I don't understand how this case was handled
00:31:13on behalf of P. Diddy, on behalf of Combs.
00:31:15There's no reason to have those settlement negotiations,
00:31:19which they were engaged in for quite some time,
00:31:22not agree to a settlement.
00:31:24Let her file the case.
00:31:26Have a front page of every newspaper
00:31:28have explosive allegations against your client,
00:31:31and then settle it one day later?
00:31:33That was absolutely the worst of all worlds,
00:31:36because what you have is now an allegation
00:31:39that destroys reputationally this guy.
00:31:42It's actually what started this federal investigation.
00:31:45Had Diddy settled with Cassie
00:31:48before she filed a lawsuit,
00:31:51you and I might not be speaking today.
00:31:54I agree with you 100%.
00:31:56There's no criminal case if that happens.
00:31:58The lawyers let her file a lawsuit,
00:32:01settle 24 hours later, and open Pandora's box.
00:32:05That's pretty incredible.
00:32:07And unfortunate.
00:32:08Had it been settled quietly,
00:32:10they would have never known about it
00:32:12to have the opportunity to do what they did.
00:32:15He must be kicking himself for that.
00:32:17You know, he is so focused on trying to right this wrong
00:32:21that it's actually giving him a form of strength
00:32:24and a form of confidence
00:32:25that I think is going to get him through
00:32:27this difficult time period.
00:32:28There's an adage that we have in my office,
00:32:30don't tell me what I did wrong, tell me what I do next,
00:32:33and that's where he is.
00:32:38Cassie Ventura's bombshell lawsuit in November
00:32:41that opened the door, really the floodgates,
00:32:44for all these similar allegations to come forward.
00:32:47Well, this latest lawsuit was filed
00:32:49by adult film star Adria English.
00:32:51She alleges that she was forced to drink alcohol
00:32:54and consume drugs,
00:32:55and then was, quote,
00:32:56passed off to be sexually assaulted.
00:32:58In a 79-page lawsuit filed by a music producer
00:33:01who claims to have worked with and lived with Sean Combs
00:33:04for a period of time,
00:33:05alleges there were underage girls
00:33:07hitting cameras and sexual harassment at his home.
00:33:12Hey!
00:33:13How you doing?
00:33:17In a new lawsuit, Don Richard,
00:33:19who is a member of the Combs-formed group Danity Kane,
00:33:22accuses him of terrorizing and sexually abusing her for years.
00:33:28Indicted music mogul Sean Diddy Combs
00:33:30is facing new sex assault allegations.
00:33:33A woman named Talia Graves just filed a lawsuit
00:33:37accusing him of drugging and then raping her.
00:33:40This is more than two decades ago.
00:33:42It opened a Pandora's box,
00:33:43because what else it did was this.
00:33:45If you make a claim against me,
00:33:46within 24 hours, I will settle with you.
00:33:49So, of course, now the floodgates open.
00:33:52Legally, I don't understand.
00:33:54That was maybe the worst strategy I've ever seen in my life.
00:33:57Shocking new accusations.
00:34:00His alleged victim humiliated and traumatized.
00:34:03Diddy's legal troubles just got bigger.
00:34:05Sean Diddy Combs faces another new lawsuit,
00:34:08the second this week.
00:34:09A fourth woman is now suing music mogul Sean Combs
00:34:13claiming he sexually assaulted her when she was just a teenager.
00:34:16Another woman has come forward
00:34:18accusing hip-hop mogul Sean Diddy Combs of sexual assault.
00:34:22This is the eighth lawsuit against Combs since November.
00:34:25Cassie Ventura really opened the floodgates,
00:34:29and women now feel empowered,
00:34:30and a whole lot of people are coming out,
00:34:32and they're telling their stories about Diddy.
00:34:35I have to imagine we are going to see a long line of people
00:34:38who want him to be found guilty in the criminal trial
00:34:41because it makes, obviously, the civil cases that much more easy.
00:34:46Once he is found guilty,
00:34:47or if he is found guilty of these criminal charges,
00:34:52I have to imagine his assets just get seized,
00:34:55they start getting auctioned off.
00:34:57And I think the fact that he has a lot of money
00:35:00kind of fuels that fire
00:35:02because this is not like suing somebody who's judgment-proof.
00:35:06There's a lot of money to go around.
00:35:08There is a lot of money to go around,
00:35:10and I think even if he escapes these criminal charges,
00:35:14he is going to have years and years ahead of him
00:35:18with these civil lawsuits.
00:35:20The woman bringing this latest lawsuit
00:35:23says she was only 17 when she was a victim
00:35:25of sex trafficking and gang rape by Combs and his associates.
00:35:30She alleges in 1991, Sean Diddy Combs drugged her,
00:35:34then sexually assaulted her.
00:35:36In the suit, she says, he videotaped and distributed it.
00:35:39Lamprose claims a rapper forced her to take ecstasy
00:35:42and demanded she have sexual intercourse with Kim Porter.
00:35:46She says Combs then began kissing her without her consent
00:35:49and forced her to perform oral sex on him.
00:35:54I have had women that a rape,
00:35:58even if it was when they were a child,
00:36:01ruins their life.
00:36:03They can't have a relationship.
00:36:06They can't make love with their husband.
00:36:09They can't have a family.
00:36:11They have flashbacks.
00:36:13They are afraid.
00:36:15They have night terrors, and it never goes away.
00:36:19And if you do manage to marry or have children
00:36:23or have a family in some way,
00:36:25it affects the way you raise your children,
00:36:28how you see the world.
00:36:30It's never over, Harvey.
00:36:33It's never over.
00:36:40No, no, no, no, no, not yet, not yet, not yet.
00:36:42She's messing up. That's your problem.
00:36:44That's your problem. I got a nice...
00:36:46Go get a drink downstairs.
00:36:48Combs allegedly planned and controlled the sex performances,
00:36:52which he called freak-offs,
00:36:55and he often electronically recorded them.
00:37:00Hollywood is often quick to speak up and speak loudly
00:37:05when somebody does something bad,
00:37:07but they've been silent on Diddy.
00:37:10I'm wondering if there are a lot of nervous people in this town,
00:37:13especially now knowing that there are videos.
00:37:17There should be a lot of nervous people in this town.
00:37:19If there are higher-up people,
00:37:21people that are still famous right now
00:37:23that are on these videos,
00:37:26it's going to blow.
00:37:27I mean, Hollywood is going to just implode, I think.
00:37:30Diddy party stories, they're our favorite genre of anecdote.
00:37:33Oh, really?
00:37:34Yeah.
00:37:35Wow, okay, I've got a lot I can't tell.
00:37:37So, um...
00:37:40I can't tell that one either.
00:37:42Fair to say that some of these videos
00:37:46might include people other than Cassie and Diddy
00:37:50and that there might be other celebrities on these videos.
00:37:55I don't know of other celebrities, I'll tell you that.
00:37:58In terms of the other people,
00:38:00I don't want to comment on that until I've seen them.
00:38:02That's probably a bridge too far for me
00:38:04because I haven't seen the evidence yet,
00:38:06but, you know, we'll see what's on them.
00:38:08What about his desire to bring celebrities into the fold
00:38:14based on what you know about him?
00:38:16Was that something that was always his endgame?
00:38:21Because what I'm wondering is, what's on these videotapes?
00:38:25I think the prosecutors have them.
00:38:27The question is, did he court celebrities to come to these?
00:38:31He was a celebrity magnet.
00:38:32My phone rang consistently with celebrities asking,
00:38:37can I come to the party?
00:38:39When is the next party?
00:38:40Put my name down, take my number.
00:38:43The parties were fantastic, Harvey.
00:38:45It's hard!
00:38:48Let it breathe, Quincy, let it breathe!
00:38:51Play the horns, Quincy!
00:38:53Fantastic.
00:38:54And then they went sideways.
00:38:57I suppose.
00:38:59I never stayed long enough to find out.
00:39:03So who was with you this weekend?
00:39:06A bunch of my friends.
00:39:08Diddy, Quincy, Justin Bieber, French Montana.
00:39:15I got on a plane at 5.30 a.m.
00:39:19for this party.
00:39:21I think half the people there were butt naked.
00:39:23Diddy threw lots of parties.
00:39:27Diddy threw lots of parties that were filled with celebrities,
00:39:30big celebrities.
00:39:42Let's take a toast to Sean Paul, Puff Daddy.
00:39:46And as you say, there were whispers about what happens
00:39:50late into the night at various parties.
00:39:55Not to mention specific parties like freak-offs.
00:39:58How likely is it, do you think, that there are celebrities there?
00:40:02I would assume that the vast majority of the people involved
00:40:05in these freak-offs would be celebrities,
00:40:08at least on the male side of things.
00:40:10It's easy for me to imagine, and from what we've heard,
00:40:13that a lot of these parties might be like a handful of guys
00:40:16and then dozens or even hundreds of women
00:40:19who are basically involved in it.
00:40:22The real sad part about it is the silence
00:40:26of the people in Hollywood.
00:40:29Are they scared?
00:40:31Are they nervous for themselves?
00:40:33Are they worried about something like this coming out about them?
00:40:36People are concerned about the slightest infraction these days.
00:40:39I have to be honest with you.
00:40:40People are afraid of being canceled.
00:40:43You said, we are not done, and that Combs did not do this alone.
00:40:47We are not done, and that Combs did not do this alone.
00:40:50Do you foresee that there could be other charges related to this case?
00:40:54I'm not taking anything off the table.
00:40:56People are thinking, oh, crap, I was at that party.
00:40:59What happened? What did I do? What did others do?
00:41:02And I think that video that the Homeland Security folks sees
00:41:06freaked them out.
00:41:08Yeah, it freaked a lot of people out, for sure.
00:41:11It's the after parties. It's the side rooms.
00:41:14It's whether there's video of those smaller gatherings of people
00:41:19who stay when the party's over or who are getting together
00:41:22when everybody else is in the larger room that people are afraid of.
00:41:25I think that video is going to blow a lot of stuff open wide
00:41:29if it comes to light.
00:41:31If some celebrity is captured on video at one of these freak-offs,
00:41:38could that celebrity's lawyer somehow go to prosecutors, the judge,
00:41:45and say, please blur my client, cut them out.
00:41:51There's no reason to make them collateral damage.
00:41:54It's possible that somebody of some renown, some fame, a recognizable face
00:41:59could be involved in some of these freak-off tapes.
00:42:02If they are, that person clearly can ask prosecutors to take some kind of action
00:42:10to blur out their face or to make sure that they're not recognizable
00:42:15if they haven't done anything illegal.
00:42:17However, at some point there's a balancing test
00:42:21between a celebrity's right to privacy and to the protection of their career
00:42:26and to the public's right to know and to the jury's right to see
00:42:31and deliberate on a just decision.
00:42:34And every time the prosecution is going to choose the public's right to know
00:42:39and the jury's right to do justice over a celebrity's right to remain private.
00:42:43If I was a Hollywood celebrity and I was at one of those parties,
00:42:46I'd make sure to talk to a lawyer because I could easily be dragged into this.
00:42:52Does he have any goodwill attached when it comes to this jury that he'll have?
00:42:57In my opinion, Sean Combs enters the courtroom with a very complicated history.
00:43:04No!
00:43:08I love him.
00:43:11I love him.
00:43:14I love him.
00:43:18I love him.
00:43:22Oh! I'm a savage! Whatever I want, I'm going to get!
00:43:26Whatever I want, I have to get!
00:43:28I think the defense is going to have a difficult time portraying him as a choir boy
00:43:35or as someone who is beloved by the public.
00:43:38Sean Combs is someone who has been consistently in the crosshairs of law enforcement
00:43:44since the 90s when he first came into prominence.
00:43:47So he's a complicated figure entering that courtroom.
00:43:50What if, Nancy, did his lawyers say in trial,
00:43:54look, the prosecution is infantilizing women
00:43:58by saying that they were at these freak-offs under duress or pressure,
00:44:04that people go to orgies, people do drugs,
00:44:08to assume that they didn't have the right not to go or to leave when they wanted is a huge leap.
00:44:17To that, as a prosecutor, you would say what?
00:44:21So when evidence comes out of Sean Combs beating, threatening, chasing victims...
00:44:38Then I believe a jury will see that they were not infantilized as you are describing.
00:44:44Yes, they were coerced. Yes, they were forced.
00:44:47Yes, they were asked to change their stories.
00:44:50They're going to show that video over and over and over
00:44:54about what happens to women that won't change their stories.
00:44:58If the defense can find witnesses that participated in these freak-offs
00:45:05who are willing to get on the stand and said,
00:45:07I did so freely, I was not coerced, I wanted to do these things,
00:45:12and they have enough witnesses that are compelling,
00:45:16that will be their best defense.
00:45:18It's not illegal to be a freak.
00:45:21It is illegal to drug people, coerce people into doing those things.
00:45:26We hear that these investigators have been contacting individuals
00:45:30that they have seen on this footage.
00:45:33One person, in addition to the accusers who have filed these civil suits,
00:45:37is a male sex worker.
00:45:42It's pretty stunning that Diddy's lawyer could subpoena
00:45:48some of the people who were at these parties,
00:45:51knowing they were there because there's video of them,
00:45:54and all of a sudden they're forced to take the stand and talk about this.
00:45:58You have to imagine anyone who has participated is absolutely terrified right now.
00:46:04Because imagine if you started participating in these parties years ago,
00:46:08and now you've gone on to become a trad wife,
00:46:11or maybe you're just a stay-at-home mom,
00:46:13and that is not your life anymore.
00:46:15But you might be subpoenaed,
00:46:17and you might have to testify to things that are on these videos.
00:46:21It's absolutely horrifying.
00:46:23But I will say it will be a really compelling trial.
00:46:27Just wanted to give you all a taste of what it's like being in a mix,
00:46:30you know, mixing a record.
00:46:32What you got to say?
00:46:34I just want to say thank you to everybody,
00:46:36and I hope everybody likes the record.
00:46:38It's definitely an honor to be on what Puff is calling a bad boy classic.
00:46:43If I'm the defense, I would also point out that
00:46:47there was also a financial motive here for these women, right?
00:46:51It's not just consent.
00:46:58How many years ago was that confrontation?
00:47:01Many, many years ago.
00:47:03She didn't go to the law police at any time.
00:47:05She didn't go to a lawyer at any time until recently.
00:47:09And then instead of going to law enforcement,
00:47:11look, if you're a victim of a crime,
00:47:13the first place you should go to is the police.
00:47:16She didn't do that.
00:47:18She went to a lawyer and tried to get money, okay?
00:47:21And I'm just telling you what the defense would argue here.
00:47:23And she got money.
00:47:26All of a sudden, all these other victims came forward.
00:47:29Everyone who's claiming to be a victim was first looking for money.
00:47:34And that's a motive.
00:47:36That's proper fodder for cross-examination.
00:47:42They are going to ascribe motives to the women
00:47:45that they would sleep with Combs or his cohorts
00:47:48in exchange for a career boost.
00:47:51There was all the quid quo pro.
00:47:53I don't think women on the jury are going to go along with that.
00:47:56But when you combine that with threats of violence and actual violence,
00:48:00Harvey, please,
00:48:02hiding women away in remote areas so their bruises could heal,
00:48:07they're going to hear that.
00:48:09The jury's going to hear that.
00:48:11We should want, as a society,
00:48:13to question the validity of an allegation.
00:48:15It doesn't mean smearing somebody.
00:48:17It simply means, how come you never said this to anyone for 20 years?
00:48:20What's up, bro?
00:48:22What's up, man? Happy Wednesday to you, bro.
00:48:24Thank you, man.
00:48:26I have interviewed a lot of people for this documentary.
00:48:29And a lot of them have said,
00:48:32game over, after they saw the Cassie video.
00:48:36Does this compel you to put him on the stand and explain it?
00:48:42I don't know that I could keep him off the stand.
00:48:46I think he is very eager to tell his story.
00:48:50I think he will tell every part of his story,
00:48:52including what you see on the video.
00:48:54So I expect it's going to be explained by the both of us.
00:48:57The thing that's missing from this story
00:49:00is the overall context of the entire situation.
00:49:03And when that context is appreciated,
00:49:05what people are going to see,
00:49:07clearly, this was a long-term, loving, intense relationship
00:49:12that had mutual infidelities.
00:49:14And that is the reason why you see
00:49:17some of what you see on the video.
00:49:20It's kind of breathtaking that what you're telling me
00:49:24is that Diddy is going to take the stand.
00:49:27And he will be cross-examined about this video,
00:49:31about the violence in the video, about the freak-offs,
00:49:34about allegedly blowing up a car.
00:49:38All of those things.
00:49:40That feels kind of dicey.
00:49:42He has his story.
00:49:44And he has a story that I think only he can tell
00:49:47in the way he can tell it in real time.
00:49:50And it's a human story.
00:49:51It's a story of love.
00:49:54It's a story of hurt.
00:49:56It's a story of heartbreak.
00:49:58I mean, when he describes that relationship,
00:50:00the word he uses more than any other word is heartbreak.
00:50:04He was heartbroken.
00:50:05She was heartbroken.
00:50:11Are you doing all right, man?
00:50:13Are you OK?
00:50:16Are you all right, man?
00:50:18What kind of a jury does Sean Combs want?
00:50:23Men, women, white, black?
00:50:26Is it more complicated than that?
00:50:28The best jury for Sean Combs is a very diverse jury
00:50:35and perhaps a jury that is primarily male.
00:50:40He 100% wants black people on the jury,
00:50:45people that understand where he comes from
00:50:47and the hard work and dedication that he had to show
00:50:51to rise to the level of prominence where he currently is.
00:50:55He wants people that respond to celebrity,
00:50:59success, fame, power.
00:51:04I find, as a former sex crimes prosecutor
00:51:07and someone who's tried these cases,
00:51:09sometimes women are the harshest critic of women
00:51:13and the most, you know, severe judge
00:51:16of the credibility of other women making accusations.
00:51:19Honestly, older black women from Brooklyn,
00:51:25you know, where I'm from, where he's from,
00:51:28they're street smart.
00:51:29You want street smart jurors.
00:51:31They're street smart.
00:51:32You want street smart jurors is what you want here.
00:51:34What kind of jury do you want?
00:51:36I want people who've gone out and had a life
00:51:40with romance and love and loss and cheating
00:51:44and heartbreak on their own
00:51:46because that is the person who's going to see this
00:51:49for what it is, and this is all about those things.
00:51:57You mentioned earlier about a racial component here.
00:52:00Do you want black people on this jury?
00:52:02I've never been one to do that when picking a jury.
00:52:06I want people who are sensitive to the issues
00:52:09that I think are important.
00:52:14Would you be open to a plea bargain?
00:52:17Well, it's not up to me.
00:52:18It's up to Mr. Combs, and I don't see it happening.
00:52:22Why?
00:52:23Because he believes he's innocent.
00:52:25He believes he's innocent, and what's more,
00:52:28he believes that he needs to stand up,
00:52:31not just for himself, for his family,
00:52:34and for everybody who's been targeted
00:52:37by the federal government.
00:52:39He feels an obligation to those people to say,
00:52:41you know what, maybe I can break the model.
00:52:44Maybe I can show the world that a black man can win
00:52:48in federal court, and I think he probably
00:52:51is the only person I know of
00:52:53who might be able to actually accomplish that.
00:52:57Now, Diddy, uh...
00:52:58That's really Diddy, bro.
00:53:00Diddy was denied bail.
00:53:02This trial could be a year out.
00:53:05So this man went from, you know,
00:53:08a person of incredible wealth and means...
00:53:12Sean, to the right, up top.
00:53:14Over the shoulder, Will.
00:53:16...to somebody who is now in a very small jail cell,
00:53:22mostly in isolation.
00:53:24That must be beyond jarring.
00:53:27It has to be, you know, pretty eye-opening
00:53:30to wake up in a cell when you were living on Star Island,
00:53:34one of the most exclusive places in the world to live.
00:53:38But again, I think it goes back to that Cassie video
00:53:42in the hotel.
00:53:43Anyone who has seen that video thinks to themselves,
00:53:46I'm glad Diddy is sitting there,
00:53:48eating his bologna sandwich on his very hard cot.
00:53:52What's his state of mind right now?
00:53:54His state of mind is actually remarkably positive.
00:53:57I spend several hours with him every day.
00:54:00I'm gonna leave you and go see him now.
00:54:04And his resolve is strong.
00:54:06He's engaged. He's focused on his defense.
00:54:09And we see him every day,
00:54:10and he has come to terms with the fact
00:54:14that this is where he is for now.
00:54:16We are trying to get this matter to trial
00:54:19as soon as possible.
00:54:22Whether he skates on federal charges or not,
00:54:28is it game over for him in terms of his career
00:54:31because of the Cassie video?
00:54:33There's no returning from this.
00:54:35I mean, how can you look at that video
00:54:37and then, you know, have anybody take you seriously
00:54:40or want to sit across a table at the boardroom?
00:54:43Even just that video is enough.
00:54:45Nothing else may materialize.
00:54:47He may be found not guilty for anything moving forward
00:54:50past the video, but I think his reputation is over.
00:54:54I think his career is over.
00:54:56And America loves a good comeback story.
00:55:00I think this may be the exception to that rule.
00:55:03You know, he just listened to every record.
00:55:05He gave me his input on what could make
00:55:07the records that he did comment on
00:55:09all the way classic and just reach their full potential.
00:55:12Nobody's ever gonna be able to take it away from Puff
00:55:15that he had a hand and was incredibly important
00:55:18in the career of so many important artists.
00:55:21As I lay down most like I was coppin', stoppin'
00:55:24If you think you're gonna make a profit
00:55:26When you got a lot of cars, don't even drive no more
00:55:28When you expect it to win, it ain't a prize no more
00:55:36Yeah, what you know about going out head west
00:55:39And that TV talking to head west
00:55:41I don't know what they want from me
00:55:45And I think the more money we come across
00:55:48The more problems we see
00:55:50The artistic contribution of so many of these artists
00:55:52that he brought to the forefront was so gigantic
00:55:54that it's kind of hard to imagine anyone being able
00:55:57to take that away from him, but at the same time,
00:56:00I mean, we've kind of seen it with Russell Simmons.
00:56:02We've certainly seen it with R. Kelly.
00:56:04R. Kelly is spending more time in prison
00:56:06after being sentenced federally for child pornography
00:56:09and enticement of minors for sex.
00:56:11As time goes by and people become uncomfortable
00:56:13with celebrating your contributions,
00:56:15it's just gonna be more and more difficult
00:56:17for people to have a conversation about Diddy
00:56:19without bringing up all of this negative shit as well.
00:56:22It's an asterisk.
00:56:23It doesn't negate what you've been able to achieve.
00:56:25Far be it from me to ever act like, I mean,
00:56:27I dance to quite a lot of those songs.
00:56:29I'm not gonna be a hypocrite.
00:56:31Nothing about me's a hypocrite.
00:56:38He is an icon.
00:56:40He has been an icon all these years,
00:56:42and he is an icon with an asterisk now.
00:56:45You can be a phenomenal musician...
00:56:48and a monster.
00:56:50I don't care about his legacy.
00:56:52I don't give a flying fig about his legacy.
00:56:55His legacy is as a sex abuser
00:56:58with probably hundreds, if not more, victims.
00:57:03That's his legacy.
00:57:04Don't ask me anymore about his Hollywood legacy.
00:57:07I don't care.
00:57:09How you gonna say it one time?
00:57:11Yeah!
00:57:12How you gonna say it one time?
00:57:14Yeah!
00:57:15How you gonna say it one time?
00:57:17We talking about a guy that did a hell of a lot
00:57:20for the black culture, for the culture in general.
00:57:22We're not gonna label any color on him.
00:57:24We're gonna say for the culture, right?
00:57:27Black excellence.
00:57:30Tequila made by a black man.
00:57:33Thank you! Thank you!
00:57:35Give everybody jobs, schools.
00:57:37It was a dream of mine to come back to my neighborhood
00:57:42and open up a school in Harlem.
00:57:44He really meant something to black people.
00:57:49He was an inspirational figure
00:57:52where people wanted to aspire to be like him,
00:57:55to have that degree of success,
00:57:57to be able to buy a giant compound
00:58:00and estate in the Hamptons
00:58:02and throw white parties every year
00:58:04and invite every single A-list celebrity
00:58:06and have your own jet.
00:58:08All black everything.
00:58:10All black crew.
00:58:12Greatest pilots in the world.
00:58:14I mean, look, it's the uber-American dream
00:58:17to be able to do something like that.
00:58:19So he was a giant, huge role model for a lot of people,
00:58:22and now he's fallen from that perch.
00:58:24You build him up, you tear him down,
00:58:27but I think, sadly, he gave folks the, you know,
00:58:31ammunition to be able to tear him down.
00:58:34Hello.
00:58:36Good morning.
00:58:38Hello.
00:58:40Good evening.
00:58:42Is Diddy concerned about his legacy,
00:58:46given everything that's come out already,
00:58:48even if he's found not guilty?
00:58:52That's a very good question,
00:58:54and honestly, I haven't asked him that.
00:58:56I'm going to venture an answer.
00:59:00I think...
00:59:02I think he views his legacy as being a fighter.
00:59:05I think he views his legacy as someone
00:59:07who's worked very, very hard
00:59:09to get everything that he earned,
00:59:11and if he can work hard
00:59:13and earn a not-guilty verdict
00:59:15in the eyes of 12 New Yorkers,
00:59:17I think that would be consistent with his legacy.
