00:00This October, the 11th Philippine Wedding Industry Ball will be held.
00:04It is the most well-attended wedding industry ball in the country.
00:08And this year, it is expected that more than 600 people will attend this event.
00:14This is a charity ball that will raise funds for their beneficiaries.
00:21And to give us more details about this,
00:24we have Tita Celia Cunanan,
00:26the founding chair of the Philippine Association of Wedding Planners,
00:30and Marix Gaba, the former chair and past president of PIWAP.

00:43Tita Celia, can you tell us how this organization started?
00:47What is the main objective of this organization or association?
00:53Okay, so in about 2000, the year 2000,
00:57a lot of people became coordinators.
01:00So we attend bridal fairs, we tell stories.
01:05And so in these stories, we receive some horror stories
01:10that our coordinating staff are acting like servants.
01:15Like, someone is applying makeup, someone is applying powder, and so on.
01:19And we are all college graduates.
01:21So we talked about forming an association.
01:25To make it more professional.
01:28Yes, more professional.
01:29There are ethical standards that can be followed.
01:32So we started, we grouped together, and about 12 of us founded this.
01:39And in about 2004 of August,
01:42we were registered as the first legitimate Philippine Association of Wedding Planners.
01:48And our mission is to professionalize the wedding planning profession.
01:52Which is good, right?
01:53Because with the different kinds of situations that you face,
01:56those people who are into these kinds of events are sometimes unethical.
02:01Yes, they receive treatment.
02:03It's really professional.
02:04It's a good thing that we have this association.
02:06But Maddox, as part of this big event,
02:08when and how did you conceptualize what we call the wedding industry model?
02:13Tell us more.
02:14So as organizers, as planners, we always do events for our clients.
02:19But we never get the chance to dress up, glam up, and attend our own events.
02:24So in 2012, about 11, 12 years ago actually,
02:29about 12 years ago, we decided, because we thought of an event
02:34where all the movers of the industry from different categories, not just planners,
02:40will gather in one venue and then get to glam up,
02:44get to really, what's this?
02:47Dress up.
02:48Yeah, dress up and be glamorous for one night.
02:51And just enjoy, have a wonderful evening as guests instead of organizers.
02:56It's like a fellowship for planners, coordinators.
02:59And normally, even before, even in its first year,
03:03we wanted to do it just before the peak of weddings,
03:07which is the Burman, so December.
03:09So ever since the first ball, it was already during either October or November.
03:15So that was the Burman.
03:17So just before that, it's like the kickoff of the busy months.
03:21And it was well-received, and it's been growing since then.
03:25I'm very proud of it. It's my baby, so I'm very proud.

03:31We just took a break for two years because of the pandemic.

03:34This year, PAWP is celebrating 20 years.
03:38So it's a special ball because other than the 11th ball, it's also our 20th year.
03:45So we're very proud of it, and we're very excited.

04:12So this includes the coordinators, planners, and also the clients, possible clients?

04:19You won't be surprised because some people bring dates.
04:23So the dates can be clients.
04:25We're not stopping them from inviting.
04:28It's more of the event of those people who belong to that industry.
04:32Because sometimes when we are working together in an event, in a wedding, for example,
04:38there are different suppliers.
04:39So we have the photographers, the videographers, the makeup artists, the caterers,
04:45and then the venue owners.
04:48We're just wearing jeans.
04:51But this time, we're all together dressed up and glamorous for a night.
04:56Yes, and I believe that you are the only ones who can see the suppliers, photographers.
05:02You have your own group.
05:05Yes, we see each other in events.
05:10So normally, we're in workloads.
05:12We're very busy.
05:13We don't really get to enjoy.
05:14Yes, we enjoy the event that we're doing, but we don't really get to sit down, enjoy the food,
05:19enjoy the beauty of everybody around us.
05:21So this is that one opportunity where everybody, all the movers from different categories really,
05:27get together in one venue for a very glamorous event.
05:31I remember, Tuloy, when you're the coordinator or one of the staff, you have the crew meal.
05:36Yes.
05:37Of course not.
05:40Of course not.
05:41When it's a ball, it's normally a four-course.
05:44Sometimes in past events, we've had seven courses.
05:48Yes.
05:49Okay, for those people who'd like to join in this event, how can they join?
05:53They can register.
05:55They can apply.

06:03Who are the beneficiaries?
06:05Now, it's the Down Syndrome.

06:09We choose a beneficiary every year.

06:14How will they be able to register?
06:16Oh, for the association itself?

06:19We have quite a good requirement.
06:21You have to be registered with either DTI or SEC.
06:25Then, you have to have a business permit.
06:27And then, you have to be practicing for at least three years.

06:34And with 15 contracted events.
06:36There's really a requirement.

06:38To make sure that the process is smooth and professional.
06:43We have a panel interview.
06:44Right now, we have about 25 members.
