00:00Now, we have held the National Neurology Week for a week to bring to the public the importance of the health of our brain and nervous system.
00:09And to explain to us what the purpose of the National Neurology Week is, as well as the important facts about the conditions that can affect our brain.
00:19Excuse me.
00:20We will be joined by Neurologist of the CINA, Dr. Jonah Carabal, and also Dr. Celeste Peña.
00:27Good morning, Doc. Welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines. This is Dian and Audrey.
00:33Good morning.
00:36Good morning.
00:38Good morning. Thank you for joining us online.
00:41Let's start with Dr. Celeste.
00:43First of all, can you explain the importance of the National Neurology Week and what is the main purpose of this, Doc?
00:54Yes. Thank you, Ms. Dian.
00:56So, the National Neurology Week was initially declared in 2007 by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
01:03So, it was proclamation 1408.
01:06And it was amended in October 2009 with proclamation number 1921.
01:13And it was declared that the National Neurology Week is held every second Sunday of November.
01:20Our goal is to bring to the public through lay forums and lectures,
01:27the knowledge about the diseases or conditions of the brain and nervous system that are commonly treated by neurologists.
01:35So, it is important to inform our countrymen that the neurologists who are members of the Philippine Neurological Association
01:43are the doctors who treat the diseases of the brain and nervous system.
01:48So, we have many lectures that are held all over the country in all regions of the Philippines.
01:54Like last year, our target audience is the barangay health workers.
01:59And this year, our focus is the employees of different companies.
02:05So, our theme for this year is Brain Health in the Workplace.
02:11Okay, to Dr. Jonna again.
02:14For our countrymen, what are the diseases or conditions of the brain and nervous system that are commonly treated by our countrymen?
02:26Good morning again.
02:28So, the most common is stroke or stroke in the brain.
02:33It is followed by epilepsy and developmental disorders in children.
02:38But for our employees, the most common is headache and body aches like low back pain.
02:49And also insomnia, people who cannot sleep because of stress at work.
02:55So, in this Neurology Week, which occurs this week, November 3 to 10,
03:03the topics that we have lectured all over the country are stroke, epilepsy, headache, and common back pains or low back pain, and also insomnia.
03:18Those are the topics that we will lecture this week to our employees.
03:27Okay, Dr. Jonna, what are the most common symptoms that people should monitor to know if they have a problem with their brain or nervous system?
03:39Okay, hi Ms. Diane.
03:41Because stroke is the most common brain or nervous system disease,
03:48we have what we call a BFAST,
03:52which is used to know if a person is already having or intending to have a stroke.
04:02So, B for balance.
04:04If the balance is lost,
04:06E for eye problem,
04:08if the vision is blurred or blurred,
04:12F for facial asymmetry,
04:14if the face is crooked,
04:18A for arm weakness,
04:20if the arm is losing consciousness or is strong,
04:24S for speech,
04:26if the speech is slurred or difficult to speak,
04:31and T for time,
04:32time from onset,
04:34which is 4.5 hours or 4.5 hours.
04:38So, that is the most common thing that we want to tell people,
04:43that if they feel that,
04:45they should go to the nearest hospital to get treated,
04:50because they can already be treated.
04:52So, for other diseases,
04:54headache.
04:55Headache can be commonly a migraine, tension, headache from stress.
05:02But we also have headaches that are dangerous,
05:07just like an aneurysm.
05:10It's dangerous.
05:12It can kill you.
05:14So, we have red flags for headaches.
05:18If the head is really hurting,
05:21the most painful headache in a person's life,
05:26along with nausea,
05:29loss of consciousness,
05:33that is a red flag that needs to be brought to the nearest hospital.
05:39If the headache is accompanied by a stroke,
05:43or because of a recent head trauma,
05:48that is also a red flag that needs to be brought to the nearest hospital.
05:57Sometimes, people think that the headache is a common headache.
06:01But, Dr. Celeste,
06:04what are the new methods or technologies in the field of neurology
06:10that can help improve our health, particularly in the brain?
06:17Well, for now, aside from general neurology and child neurology,
06:24neurology has a lot of subspecialties.
06:27We have a lot of students who studied further studies
06:34to become experts in our subspecialties,
06:39such as epilepsy, dementia, movement disorders, and stroke.
06:44These subspecialties have access to new technologies
06:49to diagnose and treat these diseases.
06:53One example of this is Parkinson's disease.
06:56We have a new operation called deep brain stimulation.
07:02They put in DBS so that the patients affected by Parkinson's disease can walk again.
07:11Patients who have symptoms of stroke,
07:14we have a lot of hospitals that have MRI machines
07:19that can see if there is a root canal
07:22before the symptoms of stroke are obvious,
07:26such as a lump or a paralyzed patient.
07:29So, early intervention, early diagnosis,
07:32is helpful for preventing further progression of the disease.
07:37Okay.
07:38Lastly, to you, Dr. Celeste and Dr. Jonah,
07:41this is National Neurology Week.
07:43What message do you want to convey to our audience?
07:47Also, about the prevention and treatment of neurological conditions.
07:50Dr. Celeste.
07:52Yes.
07:53We want to inform the public
07:56that many brain and nervous system diseases can be treated.
08:01Of course, it is important for you to know the symptoms of these diseases.
08:06This is the true goal of the Philippine Neurological Association,
08:10to convey this important information to the public
08:14through lectures and information campaigns
08:18during National Neurology Week.
08:20You can also go to our Facebook page
08:24where you can see a lot of posts.
08:27We also have live lectures
08:29that can help educate you about neurological diseases.
08:34Thanks, Dr. Celeste.
08:35Dr. Jonah.
08:37Okay.
08:39The Philippine Neurological Association is conducting
08:44an advocacy program
08:46to inform our citizens
08:51and our workers
08:56about the symptoms of brain diseases,
09:00how to prevent them, and how to treat them.
09:05Thank you for sharing your knowledge and information with us.
09:09This is Dr. Jonah Carabal-Handumon
09:13and Dr. Maria Celeste Peña.
09:15Thank you again.
09:16Thank you, Doctor.
