00:43Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Lesus Studios
00:47in Havana, Cuba.
00:49We begin with the news.
01:08The United Nations urged countries not to give up on seeking a lasting solution to the
01:12Middle East conflict on the first anniversary of the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
01:17The UN issued a statement warning of the war expansion to Lebanon and demanded the hostages
01:22release and an immediate ceasefire.
01:25In this regard, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres ratified his commitment to put an
01:28end to the crisis throughout the region.
01:30The UN photo stated that Hamas actions did not occur in isolation, but are a response
01:35to decades of Israeli occupation and violation.
01:43Palestinian resistance factions commemorated the first anniversary of the Al-Aqsa flood
01:47and assured that they will continue to fight to free their lands from Israeli occupation.
01:52In a communique, these movements affirmed that their resistance is the only strategic
01:56option against the interests of the Tel Aviv regime in the region and finally established
02:00the Palestinian state.
02:01Furthermore, the Palestinian resistance factions reiterated that the Al-Aqsa flood came as a
02:06natural and legitimate response to put an end to the uncontrollable crimes of Israel
02:10and its allies from the United States.
02:12Moreover, the resistance movements expressed their solidarity with the Lebanese people
02:16following the latest shellings and called on the Arab community to take immediate action
02:20to stop the aggravation and put an end to the Israeli genocide in the region.
02:30The Israeli Occupation Army shelled the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital one year after
02:34the genocide perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip.
02:38At least 11 people, including children, were injured in the attack that hit tents located
02:43in the hospital center, which housed displaced people.
02:46A medical source at the hospital reported that the wounded received immediate treatment
02:50amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions as a result of the ongoing attacks.
02:54Since the beginning of the genocide in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, Israel has
02:58killed 41,870 people and has wounded more than 97,000.
03:08Israeli forces killed Palestinian journalist Hassan Hamad, 19 years old, in an airstrike
03:15on his home in northern Gaza's Jabalia refugee camp, days after saying that an Israeli officer
03:19had warned him to stop filming in Gaza.
03:22Police confirmed Hamad's death, stating that the journalist's home was deliberately
03:26attacked to silence him after having received threats.
03:29Hamad had been documenting Israel's occupation of Gaza for more than a year and worked as
03:34a freelance television reporter.
03:36According to Gaza's government media office, with the killing of the 19-year-old journalist,
03:41whose work appeared on Al Jazeera and other networks, the number of Palestinian journalists
03:45killed since October 7 last year has risen to 175.
03:53Now let's take a brief look back in time to understand just how much territory Israel
03:58has stolen from Palestine since 1948.
04:01This conflict has transformed the region and remains one of the most complex disputes in
04:04the world.
04:06Here are some of the details.
04:08It all began in 1947 when the United Nations organizations, the UN, approved the partition
04:15plan that divided Palestine in two states, one Jewish and other Arab, in which 55 percent
04:22of the territory was given to Israel and 45 percent to the Palestinians, a decree that
04:29was repudiated by the Palestinian population.
04:34In 1948, after the creation of the State of Israel, the first Arab-Israeli war was
04:41unleashed.
04:42However, after the war, Tel Aviv was left with 78 percent of the territory, representing
04:48at least 20,717 square kilometers, while the Palestinians were confined to the West Bank
04:57and the Gaza Strip, controlled by Jordan and Egypt, respectively.
05:04Years later, in 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israel captured the West Bank, which covered
05:11at least 5,740 square kilometers, East Jerusalem with 70 square kilometers, and the Gaza Strip
05:20with 365 square kilometers, and the Golan Heights with 1,200 square kilometers.
05:29Israel added more than 7,200 square kilometers to its territory in just six days.
05:40By 1993, the Oslo Agreements between the Israeli government and the Organization for the Liberation
05:47of Palestine emerged to offer a permanent solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict,
05:54were not respected by the Tel Aviv regime since Israel continued to maintain its control
06:00over 60 percent of the West Bank, which represents some 7,000 square kilometers, whose area was
06:08inhabited by more than 700,000 Israeli settlers.
06:14This occupation hindered the creation of a viable Palestinian state.
06:21As early as 2005, Israel withdrew its settlements from the Gaza Strip, removing 21 settlements
06:29and evacuating some 8,000 settlers to ease tensions with Palestine.
06:37By 2007, Israel imposed a land, sea, and air blockade on Gaza, restricting imports and
06:44exports, movement of people in and out of Gaza, access to health care, education, and
06:51livelihoods, including agriculture, land, and fishing.
06:56After 17 years of this blockade, the Gaza Strip has been labeled the world's largest
07:02open-air prison.
07:04Today, Israel controls a total of 37,000 square kilometers of its original territory plus
07:14the occupied areas of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights.
07:19Palestine, on the other hand, has been reduced to just over 22 percent of its original mandate,
07:26with Gaza and a small portion of the West Bank under its control.
07:33Over the years, Palestinians have seen their land and rice shrink under the Israeli occupation.
07:39While the conflict remains without a definite solution, the demand for justice and the right
07:44to a state of their own remains at the heart of the Palestinian struggle, a cause that
07:49continues to resonate around the world.

09:30who suffered from the Israeli criminal attack in Lebanon and the whole Middle East region
09:34took place in Plaza de Mayo, Buenos Aires.
09:37During the ceremony, a large number of men and women from the Arab and Islamic community,
09:41together with Argentine sympathizers, carried Palestinian, Syrian, Lebanese, Iraqi and Argentine
09:46flags to remember October 7th as the Palestinian people's cry of enough is enough after 76
09:52years of genocide.
09:53The ceremony consisted mainly in writing with candles, the phrase, free Palestine.
09:59The attendees also lit candles to accompany demands for the end of criminal bombardments
10:03by the Zionist occupation troops.
10:09And the Palestinian community in Guatemala held a march demanding an end to the genocide
10:13that began a year ago against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
10:17Demonstration was attended by approximately 400 people who marched with Palestinian flags
10:21to the National Palace of Culture in the center of Guatemala City.
10:25Demonstrations in the framework of the anniversary of the Zionist attack of Israel on Palestine
10:30have been repeated all over the world, denouncing the war crimes of the Israeli Prime Minister
10:33Benjamin Netanyahu.
10:35In this context, Guatemalans demanded that the government of Bernardo Arevalo break off
10:40relations with Israel.
10:46In other news, Pakistani authorities are investigating a large explosion that occurred this October
10:506th outside Karachi airport, killing two Chinese citizens and injuring others.
10:54The Chinese embassy in Pakistan reported that a convoy carrying Chinese workers from a power
10:58company was attacked near the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi.
11:02As a result of the explosion, two Chinese citizens were killed, another was injured
11:06and the other seven victims belonged to the local population.
11:10An inspector general of police told the media that apparently an oil tanker explosion had
11:14taken place, adding that they are still investigating the incident and that it is too early to give
11:18a full assessment of the crime, in which police officers were also killed.
11:22According to first reports, a fire broke out in an oil tanker, involving several vehicles
11:33and causing collateral damage.
11:34We are trying to assess whether there is an element of terrorism, but we have not ruled
11:38it out.
11:39And Chinese and North Korean leaders celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations.
11:45Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed that the establishment of diplomatic ties between
11:50the two countries allowed mutual support in consolidating socialism, defending national
11:54sovereignty and promoting peace in the region.
11:57North Korea's President Kim Jong-un reaffirmed his government's commitment to strengthen
12:02cooperation with China, in line with the interests of both peoples and the requirements
12:06of the new era.

12:57Armed gang members carried out an attack in central Haiti, killing at least 70 people
13:01and displacing some 6,300 others from their homes.
13:05The attack in Ponsonde occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning and many left on
13:09foot in the middle of the night, taking only their children and other relatives with them.
13:14Currently almost 90% of the displaced are staying with relatives in host families.
13:18Gang violence in the Arte Bonite department, which produces most of Haiti's food, has increased
13:23in recent years.
13:25The International Organization for Migration said on October 2nd that over 700,000 people,
13:30more than half of them children, are currently internally displaced in Haiti.
13:38They shot at us and the gangs robbed the houses.
13:41They tried to kill everyone and some people were shot in the head.
13:47In Brazil, the results of Sunday's municipal election show that only 11 capital cities
13:51elected mayors in the first round, while candidates supported by Lula da Silva, Romaine
13:55and Bolsonaroism will go to the ballot in many localities.
13:59After the counting of the votes of the first electoral round, in Rio de Janeiro, the candidates
14:03supported by President Lula da Silva, Eduardo Paes, won, while in Sao Paulo, the candidate
14:08of the Workers' Party, Ricardo Nunes, led the elections.
14:11Other cities that defined results in the first round include Joao Pessoa, Macapá and Maceio.
14:17The round of elections will be held on October 27th with the candidates who did not obtain
14:21more than 50% of the votes.
14:41In Paraguay, the national government reported the deployment of a fire department to fight
14:45off a new wildfire that broke out in the border region of the country.
14:49The entity detailed that the flames rekindled in the area of Xoboreca Hill, located in Alto
14:54Paraguay, forcing the immediate dispatch of special brigades to mitigate the wildfire.
14:59Although this expressed concern due to the strong winds in the area caused the wildfires
15:03to advance very quickly, starting early this morning.
15:07According to the latest reports, the fires devastated more than 84,000 hectares of forest
15:12in Chaco, habitat of numerous endangered species.
15:19And on October 10th, 1980, in the midst of the armed conflict in El Salvador, the Farabundo
15:25Martí Front for National Liberation was founded.
15:28On Sunday, founders, leaders and militants commemorated the 44th anniversary of the organization
15:32that became a political party.
15:34From San Salvador, our correspondent, Huberto Ugo-Presa, has the details.
15:42Revolutionary music brightened up the atmosphere.
15:44Former fighters who took up arms for 12 years celebrated the 44th anniversary of the unification
15:50of five guerrilla groups that, on October 10th, 1980, formed the most important guerrilla
15:55organization in El Salvador.
15:57It is a historic moment where the synthesis of all Salvadoran revolutionaries unite in
16:08a single fist to strike harder and make the history of an armed conflict of a revolutionary
16:15people's war that lasted 12 years.
16:21This commemoration honored the memory of thousands of revolutionary fighters who died before,
16:26during and after the war.
16:28The historical cadres of the former guerrillas were absent.
16:31Many left the country when judicial proceedings were announced against them.
16:38Many of the leaders of the Farabundo Marti Front for National Liberation are victims
16:42of arbitrary judicial persecution, based on proceedings without any evidence, totally
16:48illegal proceedings.
16:50They are kept out of the country.
16:52They have had to seek protection and refuge in friendly countries.
16:58We are under a neo-fascist regime that persecutes the social fighters, the members of the Front,
17:05the founders, many of our comrades are in exile, others have opened processes, others
17:10are in jails.
17:14But this coup did not break the spirit of thousands of revolutionaries who continue
17:19to accompany the people in their struggle for their rights.
17:24Because we are seeing that the government has forgotten the social agenda and has dedicated
17:28itself to an economic agenda in which few will benefit and many will suffer the effects
17:33of this economic issue in El Salvador.
17:39Before a euphoric militancy, the General Secretary called on the workers to defend the conquests
17:44achieved, especially teachers and health workers whose pay scales were eliminated by the government.
17:52We condemn the lack of transparency in the use of public funds and repudiate the abusive
17:56salaries of officials and employees in favor of the regime.
18:01Just as in the past, today we raise our voice for all those whose rights have been violated.
18:08The maximum leader of the organization expressed his solidarity with the peoples of Palestine
18:14and Lebanon who are the object of genocidal attacks and condemned the criminal blockade
18:19that the United States maintains against Cuba and Venezuela.
18:23Roberto Hugo Presa, TELESUR, El Salvador.
18:27In the United States, the Cuban children's theater company La Colmenita performed the
18:43Apollo Theater in New York, deeply touching the audience.
18:46The entire presentation centered around the need of hope and unity born from the heart
18:50and soul of the children.
18:51Through its verses, the company showed its demands for the cease of the blockade upon
18:55the Antillean nation, the performance denounced the siege of Venezuela and the genocide against
18:59the Palestinian people.
19:00The show culminated with singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez's inspiring invitation
19:04to walk together as one.
19:08We have come to the end of this news brief.
