00:23Activists from around the world are protesting at the COP16 Biodiversity Summit in Galicolombia
00:28to bring attention to the escalating violence against environmental defenders.
00:37North Korea launched the powerful intercontinental ballistic missiles on Friday night, hours
00:43after the United States announced a build-up of its forces on the peninsula.
00:54Hello, welcome to From the South, I'm Mara Marrero from the TELESUR headquarters in Caracas,
00:58Venezuela.
00:59We'll be with the news, stay with us.
01:18In Palestine, the Islamic Resistance Movement claims that Israel is carrying out an ethnic
01:23cleansing in Gaza before the eyes of the world.
01:26The movement denounced that the bombing of the Zionist D.D. against the Kamal and al-Hospital
01:32and the ongoing massacres in Beir al-Ahya are war crimes and the continuation of a campaign
01:38of ethnic cleansing being carried out in Palestine and included before the eyes and ears of the
01:43world.
01:44They further explained that the bombing of a hospital full of sick and wounded, as well
01:48as the bombing of a densely populated neighborhood are another expression of Israeli fascism
01:55and extremism supported by the United States and the silence of the so-called international
01:59community.
02:08Also in Palestine, Israel brutally attacked the center of the Gaza Strip, leaving at least
02:1247 dead.
02:14The attack took place in the city of Daraa Bala in Nusra Camp in the city of al-Sayyidah,
02:20where most of the victims are women and children.
02:23The wounded are transferred to the Al-Aqsa Hospital, where they are treating the multiple
02:27wounded from the brutal bombing of residential areas.
02:31Some survivors said that while helping the wounded from the first bombing, restless victims
02:36were attacked.
02:43In Syria, the government reported a new Israeli aggression that killed at least five civilians
02:48in the province of Homs, located in the center of the nation.
02:52According to the authorities, other citizens were injured after the Zionist regime in Tel
02:57Aviv carried out a systematic attack that targeted several residential buildings and
03:02an industrial area in the city of Qusayr.
03:06The Syrian government also reiterated that the occupation showed the Moutariba water
03:10crossing with living and killing three people.
03:18Venezuela's parliament appointed a new representative of the citizens' power for the next seven
03:23years.
03:24After reviewing more than 40 eligible profiles, the National Assembly appoints Gustavo Uribe
03:30VizcaĂno as the new Comptroller General of the Republic.
03:34At the same time, the National Assembly ratified Korean Attorney General Tarek William Saab
03:39as the head of the public ministry and Alfredo RĂos in the henchman's office.
03:43After the appointment, the president of the parliament, Jorge Rodríguez Hernández, members
03:47of the Republican Moral Council.
03:54Also in Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro led the commemoration of the first anniversary
03:58of the Great Venezuelan Women's Mission, when he affirmed that despite U.S. sanctions, the
04:03people are united and moving forward for social recovery.
04:08The president points out that all women in the country have played a key role in the
04:12struggle of the Bolivarian Revolution against the destabilizing plans of the Venezuelan
04:16extreme right wing and its U.S. allies.
04:19In this sense, the Venezuelan head of state emphasized that while the global ultra-right
04:23continues to leave women aside, the Bolivarian Revolution has granted them for their historical
04:28demands.
04:29The president also shared that the Venezuelan voice in the struggle against neoliberalism
04:34resounds in the nations of the world.
05:05Europe, Asia, Africa, in the United States and in all of Latin America, they talk about
05:11the danger of fascism for the society of today and tomorrow.
05:15And where did the first war come from?
05:19From our struggle, here in Venezuela.
05:24We're going to take a short break, but first, remember that you can join us on our Tiktok
05:31account.
05:32Also, see us on the special segment we have in our program from the South about the U.S.
05:41presidential elections 2024, 1930, Quito time, and 2030, Havana, Venezuela, Caracas, and
05:49New York.
05:50Welcome back to From the South.
06:18In Colombia, activists from around the world protested at COP-16 about a diversity summit
06:24in Cali to bring attention to the escalated violence against environmental defenders.
06:28The protests came in a large number of statistics, with at least 198 environmental activists
06:34killed globally in 2023, and Colombia recorded the highest number, at 79 deaths.
06:40In America, particularly countries like Brazil, Mexico, and Honduras, reminds the most dangerous
06:46regions for these defenders, with a minor deforestation and agribusiness expansions
06:52being key drivers of the violence.
06:54The activists are criticizing the lack of effective protection for environmental defenders
07:00despite government commitments and protection programs.
07:11We call on everyone who supports and defends the territories and the forests to stand
07:16with us, alongside indigenous peoples.
07:19We haven't just started protecting the forest, we have been protecting it for centuries.
07:24Our ancestors dedicated themselves to safeguarding the forest, and now we, as youth, are facing
07:31a moment of crisis.
07:39The executive's proposal comes under the guise of providing support before, during,
07:44and after the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum Summit.
07:47During the debate, several parliamentarians criticized the results as a possible attack
07:51against Peruvian sovereignty.
08:02Is it that these US military forces are going to be used to repress the Peruvian people?
08:07I don't know.
08:08I'm trying to understand the position of the president because it really makes me wonder.
08:12There is a very important issue, Mr. Chairman.
08:15The military forces that come from other countries, not only from the United States, they're not
08:19going to fight against the cogotero.
08:21It is not against the criminals in the streets.
08:24This is to avoid, Mr. Chairman, I don't know if you know it, but a lot of world leaders
08:28meet here, and they can be the target of terrorist attacks, not of Peruvian terrorism, but international.
08:34In other words, many things can happen.
08:37There are international leaders, and how do you think they're going to trust only the
08:40internal security of a country?
08:42Pure logic, simple reasoning.
08:49Congressman Aguirre-Vellido would reject the draft resolution as he considers it to be
08:54an attack against Peruvian sovereignty.
09:00Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
09:02I believe that the audience is paying attention to our participation.
09:07I would like to say through you, Mr. Chairman, that, in fact, it is unnecessary to have 600
09:15Marines entering our national territory, since the country has military forces and also the
09:23national police.
09:24Therefore, due to sovereignty issues and also due to issues of national defense of
09:31our territory, we consider that this initiative is not favorable and should not be voted in
09:39favor.
09:40Mr. Chairman, for our part, on a personal basis, I would like to point out that we're
09:47going to vote against this initiative.
09:54On Thursday, the Brazilian court sentenced to prison two murderers of iconic LGBTQ plus
10:00activists and consular woman, Muriel Franco.
10:04After a two-day trial over a crime that shocked the country, two former military police officers,
10:11Raul Eliza and Eliseo de Cura, have confirmed to have killed the Rio de Janeiro politician,
10:19her driver Anderson Gomez, in a shooting on March 14, 2018.
10:24Eliza, who was sentenced to 78 years and nine months imprisonment, said he pulled the
10:30trigger while Queiroz, who drove the car that was sentenced to 59 years and eight months
10:36behind bars.
10:37After having received the popular jury decisions, Judge Luciana Aguiar pointed out that justice
10:44sometimes is slow to come, but it does come.
10:52As part of the reform of the judiciary in Mexico, hundreds of judges and magistrates
10:57declined their rights to a stand-off for elections next year.
11:01Antonio Aranda, our correspondent, brings us the details about the situation.
11:07The Senate of the Republic received the resignation of 845 judges and magistrates, in addition
11:13to eight ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice, who declined to participate in the
11:17election by popular vote for these positions in 2025.
11:22President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated that this is a product of the popular mandate.
11:29I was elected by the people of Mexico and eight ministers cannot be above the people,
11:34and that is what the Constitution says.
11:40Among the judges and magistrates who will not participate in the election are those
11:44who were recently exposed in the president's morning conference for favoring powerful drug
11:48lords, corrupt politicians, or businessmen.
11:54Juan José Fernando García, judge of the 8th District in matters of federal trials
11:59in the state of Mexico granted a flat suspension to Rafael Caro Quintero so that he would not
12:04be extradited at the request of the US government.
12:11This is an irregular situation.
12:18Some magistrates and judges acknowledged that for decades, they had been out of contact
12:22with society.
12:25This lack of communication with the people and the population was because we were identified
12:29as impartial, nobody knows me, I solved the case, I solved the fact, that is why we did
12:35not go out to the streets, we considered it unnecessary.
12:40Others, despite recognizing that they have advantages, decided to decline in order to
12:47receive a significant compensation.
12:50All of us who declined are going to be compensated, although of course at the school level our
12:59experience and our track record would give us a plus for the election.
13:08Citizens consider judges, magistrates, and ministers corrupt and support the renewal
13:13of the judiciary.
13:19For me, none of the justice system is honest, generally speaking, because if they don't
13:23see the gifts, they don't do things the way they should be.
13:33We can no longer assume that something is going to happen according to the law.
13:36We are going through a negative experience, when my daughter was injured in the knee and
13:45we have not been given an answer.
13:51The three evaluation committees for the selection of nominations have already been set up, in
13:56which the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government are represented.

14:16A final short break, don't go away.
14:32Welcome back.
14:40North Korea launched the powerful intercontinental ballistic missiles on Friday 19 hours after
14:46the United States announced a build-up of its forces on the peninsula.
14:50North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was at the forefront of this new launch and described
14:56it as a success, according to the national news agency.
15:00These missiles, which has proven to have the range to strike anywhere in the United
15:06States, is the second Pyongyang missile's launch in less than 24 hours.
15:11The previous one, according to South Korean and Japanese records, reached the highest
15:16levels of any North Korean missile's launch so far.
15:30In the United States, with only four days to go before the elections, to choose the
15:42next president, the technical tie between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald
15:47Trump remains.
15:48Harris and Kim last have a 49.1 percent of the popular vote, while Trump and Givens have
15:5647.2 percent of the popular vote.
15:59However, the extreme right wins higher stakes, the lead in key states such as Arizona, North
16:05Carolina and Georgia.
16:07In Pennsylvania, the key territory, Harris and Trump's, appear tied.
16:10The narrow margin between the candidates raises fears of an outbreak of political violence
16:16by the extreme right, which, in addition to maintaining a campaign of discredited on the
16:22credibility of the guardians of the vote, continues to doubt the victory of President
16:27Joe Biden in 2020.
16:33In Georgia, leaders of Georgia and opposition parties call for new processes and new elections
16:38in their refusal to recognize their defeat in the last parliamentary elections.
16:44According to what was expressed by leaders of the opposition parties in the country,
16:50the convocation will take place in Bruce's Valley Avenue this coming Monday, where they
16:56will inform in detail about the action plan.
17:00Also, according to their statements, a constitutional coup d'etat has taken place in a country in
17:04which they argue that their purpose is to regain control over the future of the nation.
17:15The Uruguayan elections confirm that a presidency will be defined in a ballot box on November
17:20the 24th, and that there is a new parliamentary confirmation, a new party called Sovereign
17:26Identity.
17:27Let's see more details.
17:31Joy and celebrations in the streets of downtown Montevideo.
17:36This was the post electoral atmosphere in which the followers of the Uruguayan Sovereign
17:40Identity Party celebrated their entry into the chamber of deputies with two representatives.
17:46Led by Gustavo Sal, this small sector with no territorial structure reached a position
17:51that could be key for the coming years.
17:54Militants say that the people recognize the role of their leader.
18:01We find receptivity in the people, except in very, very isolated cases.
18:06Nobody rejects a list from Sal, nobody rejects a greeting from Sal, in other words, the other
18:12way around, they come looking for him.
18:15We have had a very good receptivity from the people.
18:18I think he communicates the idea well, regardless of whether people vote for him or not.
18:28The leader of Sovereign Identity is named Gustavo Sal.
18:32He is a lawyer, and his figure has gained notoriety in recent years for his critical
18:37stance towards international treaties, his skepticism about climate change, and his rejection
18:41of gender ideology, the 2030 Agenda, health policies and vaccination plans against COVID-19.
18:48He also denounces corruption and drug trafficking.
18:51Sal defines himself as an anti-globalist and defender of national sovereignty.
19:02I consider myself ideologically anti-globalist, anti-oligarchy, a man seeking national sovereignty,
19:15seeking the individual freedom of the human being without losing sight that the human
19:18being lives in the social context and that social context obligates to have solidarity
19:23and empathic conduct.
19:24I do not enter into the left-right considerations because I consider them a terrible, nefarious
19:29manipulation.
19:38Although the left with the broad front achieved an absolute majority in the Senate, no party
19:42has an absolute majority in the Chamber of Deputies.
19:46This makes the two Sovereign Identity votes key players.
19:49Sal explains on which issues it is willing to collaborate and on which it will maintain
19:54its independence.
19:59This is very simple.
20:00The macro-political issues of obsequiousness to the international oligarchy are agreed
20:05by the broad front and the multicolors.
20:07They do not need us.
20:14It is in the cheap, accessory and insignificant politicking that we are going to be able to
20:18influence.
20:19Unfortunately, this is so.
20:27I disagree that the role that this party will play in the next legislature will be relevant.
20:35This party is going to have an important role because the majorities that were consolidated,
20:39the integration of the Parliament in deputies was consolidated in such a way that the two
20:43votes of Sovereign Identity are going to be used to form majorities for one political
20:48bloc or the other.
20:50This means that it can play an important role.
20:52We have to see how this party uses this role to play.
20:56If it closes itself to bans and does not lend itself to any agreement and maintains
21:00an anti-political system position or if on the contrary it starts to agree with the different
21:05parties according to different laws.
21:12Gustavo Sal focused his campaign on accusing Parliament of being a den of sellouts and
21:17frequently refers to the political caste to refer to legislators.
21:21At 66 years of age, this lawyer, who graduated in 1982 and joined the prosecutor's office
21:27during the military dictatorship, managed to capture the attention of part of the electorate.
21:32With 2.7% of the vote, his party, Sovereign Identity, won two seats in Parliament.
21:39One for himself and one for his daughter, Nicole Sal.
