Jim gives some of his overreactions from the weekend in sports.

00:00Overreactions from the weekend.
00:06Ashton Gente is the best college running back since Barry Sanders.
00:10The stats say so.
00:11He's already up to 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns through five games.
00:16He's done it on fewer carries than Barry, only 95 carries to run for 1,000 yards.
00:21He's actually sat in the second half of some of these games.
00:24So the level of competition weirdly has hurt his ability to rack up better numbers.
00:29And if you want a comparable, he ran for nearly 200 yards against Oregon.
00:33Power speed.
00:34You watch the highlights, John.
00:35Best since Barry.
00:37It's a bit of an overreaction because you do look at the opponents that he's playing.
00:41And the fact that he's not playing a lot in the second halves, OK, he's fresh by the next
00:47week.
00:48He's not getting banged up.
00:49He's not getting touched.
00:51So he's not taking unnecessary hits.
00:53He's really good.
00:54I mean, go back to what we had talked about.
00:56I think it was the Thursday touchdown.
00:59He was my September Heisman.
01:01I think things will level off as the season goes on.
01:05He's really good.
01:06I don't want to disparage him.
01:08But I think when you look at Derrick Henry, I would take him over Ashton.
01:14I just would.
01:15Yeah, overreaction for now because it's October 7th.
01:18I mean, come on.
01:19Since Barry.
01:201,000 yards in five games, 16 touchdowns.
01:23I know, Jim, but it's October 7th.
01:26Pump the brakes just a little bit.
01:32This weekend, we saw five of the top 12 teams be upset.
01:38It shows that college football has never been healthier.
01:42Vandy beats Bama.
01:44Down goes Tennessee, Michigan, Missouri, USC all lose.
01:47The Hoosiers are 6 and 0.
01:49The sports day is unpredictable.
01:50We've got exciting, better matchups than ever before.
01:53We do have exciting, better.
01:55I don't think it's an overreaction because I like the parody in college football now.
01:59I like the fact that there's not a dominant Georgia.
02:02There's not a dominant Alabama.
02:03You could say Texas right now is the dominant team.
02:08But you also have Ohio State, you have Oregon that's undefeated, Penn State in the Big Ten.
02:12I don't think anybody's going to mistake Penn State for a championship team.
02:15But the matchups that we're getting with 18 teams in the Big Ten, 16 in the SEC has created
02:21some excitement.
02:22Watching Vandy, watching their fans react the way that they did after the game, traveling
02:26three miles down Broadway to throw the goalposts in the river.
02:31That was awesome.
02:32You're going to get more of those moments because transfer portal, NIL, the grass is
02:37always greener on the other side and sometimes it is for some of these players.
02:41I'm going to say overreaction because I'm not sure I like this yet.
02:44I need to let this play out and go through a season and maybe two.
02:47I don't know if I like this.
02:48Yeah, exactly.
02:49I don't know if I like this college football.
02:52What didn't you like about this weekend?
02:54Look, the upsets are all great and stuff, but with the portal and the parody, I'm not
03:00sure I want like I don't want broad parody in college football, I don't think.
03:04But I'm not ready to say that either.
03:05So right now I'm kind of in this neutral waffle zone.
03:07And I know that's a bad place to be in sports talk radio, but it's October 7th.
03:11Again, I have to say that every single one of these today.
03:15I will say this.
03:16I think we are seeing college kids not being able to get up week after week, seriously,
03:23because the competition is just broadly tougher on a week to week basis right now, like Tennessee
03:29going to Arkansas.
03:30Hey, you could trust them going Oklahoma, but they could they get up?
03:33Can they get up?
03:34And I think we're going to see a lot more of this.
03:36Well, this is the junior NFL because of the schedule.
03:41I mean, we look and we want an undefeated NFL team.
03:45It's really hard to do.
03:47Even the bad teams can win games.
03:50And that's what we're seeing in college football.
03:52So if you're if you're used to, hey, I just want to dominate Clemson.
03:56I want to dominate Alabama.
03:58Those days are done.
03:59I think I think we're seeing a dramatic shift here, though.
04:01I didn't think it was going to happen this quick.
04:03And I'm telling you right now that and you guys can answer mine is a little reaction.
04:07We might see an eight and four playoff team.
04:10It's very possible.
04:14On October 7th, Aaron Rodgers is washed up three picks in London.
04:20Second one was really ugly.
04:21The offense hasn't seen a big enough jump from the Zach Wilson days.
04:26He's not the quarterback he used to be.
04:28I don't think anybody should expect him to be the quarterback he used to be.
04:31He's also not getting the protection that he is used to having.
04:34He's getting beat up.
04:35He's going to throw some picks.
04:36He's going to you know, he's I don't think he's washed up.
04:39But I don't think he's the quarterback he used to be doesn't mean he's washed up.
04:43I think he is washed up.
04:44And we saw this in his last season in Green Bay.
04:47He wasn't as good.
04:48And then he had an Achilles injury and he's 40.
04:50I think you're seeing a difference between a 40 year old coming off an Achilles and a
04:5435 year old or whatever cousins and he's around that age.
04:56But I think you got to do what what is washed up mean he doesn't look like himself anymore.
05:01He looks like a mediocre quarterback.
05:03OK, but how many other quarterbacks would would you take instead of Aaron Rodgers?
05:08Well, you put me on the spot, but I probably three quarters of the league 20 or so, yeah.
05:18Even if Anthony Richardson is healthy, Joe Flacco should be the starter in Indy five
05:22touchdowns, zero picks the last two weeks.
05:25And let's not forget, last year helped the Browns make the playoffs.
05:28This league's about winning.
05:29He gives them the best chance to win.
05:31I don't think it's an overreaction.
05:32And here's where I go back to my philosophy of young quarterbacks.
05:38It takes them sometimes years.
05:41Does Anthony Richardson going to be a bust?
05:43I don't think so.
05:44I think he's going to be a good quarterback, but he needs time.
05:47He didn't get that experience last year.
05:49You're seeing a quarterback basically continue his rookie season.
05:52Was it four games he played last year?
05:54Now, all of a sudden, you're expecting him to be a CJ Stroud.
05:59And that's rare.
06:01I know we're seeing it in Washington as well with Jaden Daniels.
06:04But if I'm if I'm Indianapolis, I allow him time to develop, to learn the NFL game.
06:11And I go with Flacco while that's happening.
06:13See, I think you keep Richardson here because what do you what are you?
06:18If even Flacco works out nine and eight, that defense is not very good down there.
06:23And Taylor's out.
06:25I mean, where are you going with Flacco?
06:26Why? Why find out about Richardson now?
06:30Put him in there.
06:30Maybe, you know, hey, if he's got some injuries, there's no reason to take
06:33chances. I just don't get what the point is.
06:37Like the best thing Flacco could do is what the Browns did last year.
06:41Is that really what you want?
06:42And then you're going into the next year and you still have questions about the QB?
06:49I'll defer this next one to Terry Bradshaw, who brought up, well, Deshaun Watson.
06:59I think he meant Bencham to clarify.
07:03Yes, he should be benched.
07:06Yeah, I agree.
07:07I mean, you want to talk about a quarterback that is not like he used to be,
07:10whether it's he just doesn't care anymore.
07:14He got the big time contract.
07:16He says, you know what, I'm just going to ride off into the sunset.
07:18Give me my money.
07:19Or there's just way too many off the field distractions
07:23that are continuing to resurface.
07:26Yeah, I sit him down and let somebody else go in there
07:30and try and win you some games. Who is their backup?
07:32You guys know off the top of your head?
07:34I know. What's this?
07:34The old UCLA quarterback, Jameis Winston's are back.
07:37Oh, yeah, that's right.
07:37Winston, I mean, he throws so many interceptions.
07:41Is it really going to make things better?
07:42Look, the bottom line is this is I don't see how this ever works out at this point.
07:46He's played enough to show that he's not the quarterback he was.
07:50And maybe it was never all that good to begin with,
07:53because I think Bill O'Brien made him. Yep.
07:58The Packers are the worst team in the NFC North.
08:00Hear me out. Vikings are 5-0.
08:03Lions, we think highly of at 3-1.
08:06Caleb Williams has outplayed Jordan Love the last couple of weeks,
08:09and the light bulb might be going on.
08:12It's a bit of an overreaction.
08:13I'm not ready to say Caleb Williams.
08:15Caleb Williams is going to have some up and downs.
08:17They still have Matt Eberfloos as their coach.
08:20And I don't think much of him as a coach and what he can do for Chicago.
08:24He's got a lot of weapons.
08:26If he simply just hits the I'm not going to try too much
08:30or try to do too much button, then he can be OK as a rookie.
08:36But I'm not ready to say that they're going to be better than Green Bay
08:40through the course of 17 games.
08:41Whole division has a winning record.
08:43Someone has to be the worst team.
08:44Tom, is it Green Bay? It's still Chicago for now.
08:47OK, again, need to see more Carolina.
08:49Come on. Everybody puts 30 up against them.
08:52Do I see it as a possibility? Yeah.
08:54I mean, this division, that's the bigger thing.
08:56It's it's like, why?
08:58Why is it? Why is it?
09:00Why does it got to be so hard?
09:00I mean, the Lions are going to have to go minimally four and two in the division
09:04to probably win it at this point.
09:05But that's probably what you thought before the year.
09:07I didn't expect them to go three and three in the division.
09:08That's a winning record.
09:09I didn't expect them to go 6-0.
09:11Well, that's kind of what you got to do if you want to be the team.
09:13But I think we all had a Chicago at Chicago loss. Yes.
09:16And they're probably going to win that now.
09:19Yeah. And that last game of the season against Minnesota,
09:21suddenly a very different game.
09:24On that note, after the Niners lose again,
09:28the NFC runs through Detroit.
09:31Sure, the Vikings have a lead, but there's two games against Detroit.
09:35The Lions have looked the best of the preseason heavyweights,
09:38Eagles, Niners, Detroit.
09:40It goes through Ford Field.
09:43That's not to me. It's not an overreaction.
09:45I think the Lions are the better team.
09:48I think in all three phases, they're a better team.
09:51Now, the question is going to be for Minnesota.
09:54How long can they keep Sam Darnold playing at this level?
09:59And how long can Brian Flores continue to get his defense
10:03to play at an elite level?
10:05That's where they are right now.
10:07I think the Lions are the best team still, but I'm certainly starting
10:10to question a little bit in the back of my mind.
10:11I mean, the defense that they're playing is just nobody saw that coming. Right.
10:16And all they need is a game manager at quarterback.
10:20It's like they've got the perfect formula to to really rack up
10:23a great regular season win.
10:25But you know what? When push comes to shove, I think in the playoffs,
10:28I still wouldn't buy them, but I don't know.
10:31They've got such a lead now.
10:32If they go eight and four the rest of the way,
10:34the Lions have to go ten and two and rely on tiebreakers.
10:39Last one, the Tigers can't have Spencer Torkelson
10:42as the everyday first baseman in 2025.
10:45He's a platoon player at best postseason.
10:47Oh, for four runners in scoring position, a couple walks,
10:50but a couple strikeouts and a ground in the double play in the regular season.
10:54He hit 187 with a 539 OPS runners in scoring position.
10:59There will be bats available that could give the Tigers a lift
11:02from a premium hitting position.
11:04I don't think it's an overreaction at all.
11:05And it's not an overreaction because we have two years
11:09sample size of what Spencer Torkelson is.
11:12I don't think he's ever going to be the slugger that he was in college,
11:15the slugger that we expected him to be when he was taking one one overall.
11:18It's time to move on.
11:20You know, in this front office has no ties to him.
11:23They didn't draft him.
11:24And I think they might move up, move on from Casey Mize to
11:28one, one, not on the playoff roster.
11:30Casey Mize, not on this round's roster anyway.
11:32Those are your overreactions.
11:34It's 97 one.
