00:00After a wild and chaotic week six Saturday slate in weekend of college football, ahead of a huge monumental slate in week seven upcoming on Saturday, where have the markets changed in the hunt for a college football playoff national championship in week six, the entirety of the weekend, seven ranked teams knocked off the most we have seen in a single game.
00:30Weekend since the 2018 college football season, five of those seven teams were ranked inside the top 11.
00:38So you should expect some drastic odds movement.
00:42Ohio State was not one of the teams ranked inside the top 11 to be knocked off.
00:47In fact, they rolled over Iowa in impressive fashion, 35 to 7 covering as a three score favorite.
00:55The Buckeyes have covered in both of their big 10 games so far this year and play in a potential game of the year on Saturday night in Eugene inside Austin Stadium against Oregon.
01:08So Ohio State Joe entered last week is the national championship favorites.
01:13Even 10 cents in front of Alabama, despite the crimson tides, huge wind over Georgia to end out September.
01:21Well, Alabama gets beat.
01:23Many others inside the top 11 lose a little bit of steam.
01:27Ohio State's number grows shorter plus 290.
01:32Texas didn't play last week.
01:34Their number got better by a half buck ahead of the Red River rivalry on Saturday in Dallas against Oklahoma.
01:41Georgia bounced back with a win, albeit a noncover against Auburn.
01:46Their price lessons by a dollar as well.
01:50And although Alabama suffered a crushing defeat to Vanderbilt, who had not beaten the crimson tide since 1984.
01:59I still think Joe, one of the beauties of this new era and climate in college football with the expanded CFP.
02:06Alabama is still going to be one of the five best teams throughout the entirety of this year.
02:10Yeah, they got to shore up the defense and do so right away.
02:14But the price is not 65 to 1 now.
02:17It's still plus 650.
02:19That's how it looks at the top of the country in college football.
02:23Yeah.
02:24And listen, I think that's a great point.
02:26The idea that, you know, listen, Alabama, Georgia wasn't the end of the world for Georgia losing, right?
02:32Alabama losing to Vanderbilt, not going to be end of the world.
02:35Why?
02:36Because you got 900 teams in a postseason now that have opportunities.
02:41So what the expanded playoffs have done has kind of taken losses like this, Ben, in week five, six, seven.
02:50Right.
02:51And they've kind of mitigated them a little bit.
02:53Doesn't mean that they're out of the season.
02:55It just means their room for error now is basically slim to none.
03:01So it's going to be interesting to see how this unfolds.
03:05But again, not terrible loss by Alabama on the road against Vandy.
03:09Not one that we should have been surprised with given the letdown spot there for them.
03:13But at the same time, it's not season ending.
03:16That would have been last year, year prior or ever.
03:20That would have been the end of the Alabama's chances of a national title in week six.
03:25A loss like that.
03:26It would have been a very damning loss as well to a program like Vanderbilt.
03:31But keep an eye on the doors this year.
03:33Three and two straight up a perfect three and oh, against the spread all against power conference competition.
03:40When he outright is a 22 and a half point dog on Saturday in Nashville.
03:46So there you see the drastic movement.
03:48Georgia at a point when they were getting crushed by Alabama in the opening half two Saturdays ago.
03:54Did get as long as nine to one.
03:58Now down to plus 450.
04:00Oregon a huge game on Saturday against Ohio State.
04:04That we'll talk about in just a moment.
04:06Tennessee has seen its price double from 10 to 1 to 20 to 1.
04:11Miami hasn't lost yet this year, Joe.
04:14One of two teams alongside Indiana that is bowl eligible already after six weeks of this college football campaign.
04:21And yet they have barely survived in the last two weeks.
04:25Courtesy of the ACC Review Center.
04:27So that place a little bit longer as well.
04:3018 to 1 now becomes 20 to 1 where we thought it was Miami and then everybody else in the ACC.
04:36Clemson's won four straight.
04:38They have covered in all four games.
04:40They're now up to a 25 to 1 number 10th best around the country.
04:45Yeah, and we kind of we kind of knew that was a possibility with Clemson.
04:49But this schedule in the ACC is interesting this year because, you know, teams like Miami.
04:54I don't think they play each other this year.
04:56And with Florida State down, it really is Clemson and the U.
05:02And those are the two teams that are going to battle here.
05:06The question is who Clemson with one loss and that loss being the Georgia, which isn't terrible.
05:11But let's say Miami runs the table here.
05:14Is it possible to get to ACC teams in the playoff?
05:18That's going to be the big question.
05:20It certainly is.
05:21And right now you would expect kind of that to be the case.
05:25One of those at large bids.
05:26You still see a lot of SEC and Big Ten teams still hunting a college football playoff spot.
05:32Penn State is perfect.
05:345-0 for the fourth consecutive season.
05:36The only team at the FPS level that can claim that.
05:41One of 11 remaining undefeated teams at 5-0.
05:4412 remaining unbeaten teams.
05:46Liberty in action in CUSA competition on this Tuesday night.
05:52And Joe Ole Miss bounces back from a loss two weeks ago to Kentucky at home in Oxford.
05:57They go on the road to Columbia and easily cover as a nine-and-a-half point favorite winning 27-3.
06:04Is there any team at the moment, based on where they stand, based on the path in their conference,
06:10based on the strength of schedule, the remainder of the way,
06:13that you have circled as a must bet right here, right now, midway through the college football season?
06:19Oh, it's tough, Ben.
06:21I mean, Ole Miss certainly has shown.
06:24I was very impressed with the bounce back spot in a tough place to go on the road to South Carolina like that
06:30and just absolutely dominate.
06:33And could Oregon be figuring it out?
06:36We'll know a lot more about Oregon, I think, after this week.
06:39But at 10-1, if they are victorious this week here, Ben, you ain't getting Oregon at 10-1 anymore.
06:47I'll tell you that.
06:48No, you are not.
06:50But Joe, not expected, at least from the odds, to be victorious despite playing in Eugene.
06:55The Ducks a three-and-a-half point underdog at home Saturday night against Ohio State,
07:02who has covered in each of its first two Big Ten games.
07:05They have been at least a three-score favorite as Ohio State in all five games this year,
07:10but by far their biggest test of the season.
07:13Oregon, meanwhile, 5-0, but just 1-4 against the spread.
07:18Heisman trophy talk, Ashton Gente talk next.
07:22Boise State fans, if you're now watching the early line because of a certain individual
07:27who was hosting this show yesterday and the slanderous and asinine take that he had
07:31that Ashton Gente should have not been benched in the second half
07:35and that Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson should be fired in his first full year
07:39as the head man in Boise, Idaho.
07:41Notice who is not here today, Donny Rightside.
07:44Donny Rightside. So Joe Ranieri and myself, Ben Stevens,
07:47who hopefully you noticed my reaction when Donny was making his point yesterday
07:51as I was as confounded as you, will certainly give some credence to the Heisman trophy race
07:58midway through this college football season.
08:01Ashton Gente, Boise State's running back, is the favorite to win the Heisman trophy
08:06at plus 240.
08:09Joe, we've been doing college football coverage for a very long time through the odds.
08:14I don't remember a point. In fact, I do not think there has been a point
08:18at least in the last five college football seasons,
08:21at least since Devante Smith won the award in 2020,
08:26that we have seen a non-quarterback be booked as the favorite to win the Heisman trophy.
08:32Certainly not two non-quarterbacks as your front runners.
08:37Ashton Gente is a running back for the Broncos, plus 240.
08:41Travis Hunter does everything for Colorado, plus 320.
08:47Both the two best prices to win the Heisman in 2024.
08:51Yeah, and both very well deserved.
08:54I mean, and you saw what Cameron Ward did there just behind them
09:00against Cal there in the fourth quarter.
09:04Now, all of this is very far from being a given on any way, shape, or form just yet.
09:11A lot of this can change, but the way, you know,
09:14Gente is having the kind of year that everyone thought Ollie Gordon would have,
09:17and he would have been your favorite here.
09:19But unfortunately, that has not worked out for him.
09:22But Gente is right up in the conversation, well-deserved to be the favorite.
09:26And we know Hunter is probably going to get the most headlines
09:30and the most talk and the most chatter along with Ward
09:35because those two play in programs that are going to dominate headlines,
09:40good or bad, as the season progresses.
09:43But if he just keeps racking up the yards and the touchdowns,
09:46it's going to be very hard for any of those guys beyond Cameron Ward,
09:50beyond them, Milrow, Gabriel Beck,
09:53it's going to be very hard for those guys to overtake him if he keeps running the way he is.
09:58Kevin Milrow's stock took a huge hit on Saturday,
10:01not only because of the loss against Vanderbilt,
10:03but not the greatest offensive performance out of Milrow in full for that game.
10:08Now, Cameron Ward has thrown for at least 304 yards in all six games for Miami this year.
10:15He is college football's leading passer with more than 2,200 yards.
10:19He is the only guy that has thrown for at least 18 touchdowns.
10:22He has 20, but he has thrown four interceptions in the last three games for Miami,
10:28and it was a mixed bag on Saturday.
10:31Dreadful in the first three quarters,
10:33or at least two and a half quarters was really good at the end to come back against Cal.
10:41But again, it's been a little bit interesting for Cam Ward the last few weeks.
10:46This is a quarterback award.
10:48It is what the Heisman Trophy has been.
10:50In the college football playoff era, the last 10 years of CFB,
10:54since the start of 2014, only two non-quarterbacks have won the Heisman,
10:59Devontae Smith in 2020, Derrick Henry in 2015, both playing at Alabama.
11:07Can Ashton Gente, Boise's running back, actually hold on the entirety of the year?
11:13I say so, at least to be a Heisman finalist.
11:17Joe, Boise State was my pick of group of five teams to reach the college football playoff.
11:22I thought they would win a second consecutive Mountain West title
11:25in the first full year under Spencer Danielson.
11:28If that is going to be the case in the Broncos' stay in the national conversation
11:33all season long, deep into December, even if they don't win in the college football playoff,
11:40I think Ashton Gente will have a great, great case and resume to win the Heisman Trophy
11:46because he is putting up numbers that boggle the mind.
11:50Donnie's point yesterday that he should have played the second half
11:53because of trying to put up the stats, it's nonsensical.
11:56He ran for over 180 yards and three touchdowns.
12:00His case is already strong enough with the statistical output that he has seen.
12:05He has ran for more than 1,000 yards.
12:07I said this yesterday, but it bears repeating.
12:10The last three Heisman Trophy winning running backs, Derek Henry, Mark Ingram, Reggie Bush,
12:16did not have more than 650 through their teams opening five games of this season.
12:21The only argument you could make that the half numbers are holding him back
12:26is because his numbers should be even better if he played the entirety of the games
12:32against both Portland State and Utah State, his two lowest offensive outputs for the year.
12:37But Boise's got to win the Mountain West.
12:40Which means Ashley Jetty has to stay healthy.
12:42Hour three, up next.
