00:00Go to hell, Dibs.
00:01Now, back to Willard and Dibs on 95.7 The Game.
00:06He's going to join us on the River Islands guest line, but I won't do this.
00:10I find it disrespectful for me to bring in your former partner.
00:15You do it.
00:16I'll bring him in.
00:17Bring him in.
00:18He's one of the all-time great fullbacks in the history of football.
00:22He's a man who taught me more about life than any other human being outside of my father
00:29Dwayne.
00:30At the same time, I learned more from him in terms of cliches.
00:38I'd like to do my Low Neal impression of doing Obama because this man, this man, my brother
00:46Lorenzo Neal, I miss you, Big Daddy.
00:48What's going on, Daddy?
00:49That was good.
00:50That was good.
00:51You had me at a low, brother.
00:55That was great.
00:56Brother, how you been, kid?
00:57We talked a little bit yesterday, Daddy, but you had to go because you were locked
01:01in on Sunday Night Football.
01:02Absolutely.
01:03A little Monday Night Football thing with my boy from Fresno State, if he had any magic
01:07left.
01:08It's just too much Kansas City.
01:09I tell you, watching those guys play in Kansas City, they find a way to get it done.
01:14I mean, Dibs, you look at them, hell, their offense is not lighting up the scoreboard,
01:18but I always say, Dibs, you know it, and you can finish this line for me.
01:22Offense entertains, but defense wins championships, and that's what's not going on with the San
01:26Francisco 49ers.
01:28Where the hell is the defense gone?
01:29Yeah, we can talk about that, but just remember this.
01:31You better tread lightly when you're in the lion's mouth or something, right?
01:36Absolutely.
01:37My father always told me, he said, walk easy when you got your hand in the lion's mouth.
01:41You know what?
01:42And that's the saying I still tell my kids today.
01:44Walk easy.
01:45Walk easy.
01:46Okay, Loneal.
01:47Before we go deeper into your comment that you just made about the Niners, let's start
01:53with this.
01:55What does a Super Bowl hangover feel like?
01:59You know what?
02:00I remember being in Tennessee, and we'd go to the Super Bowl, we'd lose by a yard to
02:05the Rams.
02:06The next year, I don't think it was a hangover.
02:09You know, Aldo Greco, who's one of the best kickers in this league, that scene, missed
02:13a couple chip shots, and we played the team that ended up blowing out the Giants, the
02:17Baltimore Ravens, which they were worthy of it, but you know, that was the Super Bowl.
02:22We knew that game was going to be the Super Bowl.
02:25They were able to beat us at home, and unfortunately, so I didn't have necessarily, we didn't have
02:30necessarily a hangover.
02:32I think this right now is not necessarily a hangover.
02:35This is just, right now, you're not able to get it done, and even though you're playing
02:39as hard as you can, you're just, right now, you're not good enough.
02:43Let's be real.
02:44They're getting pushed off the line.
02:45The defense, the offense is creating a new line of scrimmage.
02:49You saw the Arizona Cardinals take the ball with six minutes left, and the Niners had
02:53no answer.
02:54It wasn't like they were throwing.
02:56It was like, we're running, and Connor, and there's nothing you can do about it.
03:01I don't care if you put eight in the box, nine in the box, you can't stop us.
03:04And that's what they did.
03:06So you don't think the Niners are suffering from a Super Bowl hangover at all?
03:11I think that you have to say, what does your eyes tell you?
03:16These guys are playing hard.
03:18You look at the Niners.
03:19You look at some of the things.
03:20You watch Salifonga come down on us when the first run, when Tyler Moran, the touchdown.
03:28He came inside.
03:29He thought it was a run.
03:30Tyler's outside.
03:31Should've took outside.
03:32Bad angle.
03:33Misread the play.
03:34Should've been outside.
03:35I know they're watching film, and they see it.
03:38So what I'm saying, when you say the hangover, what is necessarily a hangover?
03:43You played the Rams.
03:44The Rams had a mis-tick off of the line.
03:46And they had new tackles, new guards.
03:48It wasn't like it was a great offensive line, and you lost.
03:52You hit them with the two-piece.
03:54You got up by double digits.
03:56You got up by double digits against Arizona.
03:59And you're Mike Tyson.
04:00But guess what?
04:01He used to throw that blow and knock everyone out.
04:04But now, and when he got older, he threw that same hook.
04:06He's still throwing blows.
04:07But guess what?
04:08Guys can withstand it.
04:09And they're still standing.
04:10Well, here's what I guess I wonder, because, you know, I've never played in the Super Bowl,
04:15but a guy I bet you know, I'm doing a show with him on Sunday night, this is right after
04:19the 49ers lose, Ephraim Salam, 13-year offensive lineman in the league.
04:25I would imagine you two crossed paths a time or two.
04:30And Ephraim, his analysis of what was going on with the Niners was, no matter how hard
04:36you try to tell yourself, no, no, no, we need urgency, we need to be ready to go each week,
04:44and we have the talent to do this.
04:45No matter how hard you try to tell yourselves, in the back of the Niners' minds, they don't
04:51truly believe that the early regular season games are that big of a deal.
04:59And so that's part of why you're seeing what you're seeing.
05:02Do you buy that?
05:05You know what?
05:06I want to be optimist.
05:07And I want not to be doom and gloom, dibs, and I'm not going to say, oh yeah, they're
05:11going to get this together.
05:13I'm telling you, what I've seen with the eye test, they're not good enough.
05:18And the fans are going to be like, oh, what are you talking about?
05:21Let me tell you, you watch this team play, and you watch the trenches.
05:25Go back and watch the All-22.
05:26You go in there and download it and go watch the All-22.
05:30They're getting pushed off the line of scrimmage.
05:33They tried to do gap control.
05:35Last year, you fired the defensive coordinator because you said, hey, it was a defensive
05:38coordinator.
05:39Now, players got to take accountability as well.
05:42Yeah, players got to go out there and play.
05:44But you watch this defense.
05:46You watch the gap control.
05:47You watch the different things they're doing.
05:49And sometimes they're in the right place, and they're just getting pushed off the ball.
05:52Watch the tape.
05:53The tape doesn't lie.
05:54When you say, okay, we're just going to turn it over, we're just going to turn it on at
05:57the end of the year.
05:58The difference is, you can't turn it on at the end of the year because guess what, everyone's
06:03in the pack right now.
06:05You have not shown enough.
06:06I know people say, oh, the last seven years, this team has started off, you know, two and
06:09three, or this is the same type of.
06:12But the difference to what I've seen right now from this year, they shouldn't win these
06:16games.
06:17Yeah, it's a mistake here, but look at Kansas City.
06:22What is it?
06:23Kansas City is not necessarily scoring more than the Niners, but what is Kansas City doing?
06:27They're playing great defense.
06:30Go watch the Chiefs.
06:31Mahomes is throwing an interception every single game.
06:35But go watch the way they play defense.
06:37They're not giving up seven, five, and six, and four yards a run.
06:41Go look.
06:42This is what the biggest thing is with the Niners.
06:45Right now, offensively, yes, they're playing good, not great, but they're playing good
06:50enough to win football games offensively.
06:52You cannot win if your defense is going to play like this.
06:56Guys, I don't care what you say.
06:57If you say it's a hangover, I'm going to say I'm going to push back because what you see,
07:04you are what you are.
07:05You are what your record is.
07:06Right now, if they're just not playing good enough to win games, and guys, you know it,
07:09they're going to lose Thursday.
07:10If they don't get this fixed, they're not going to go into Seattle and say, we're going
07:14to win.
07:15All of a sudden, now we've got to turn on the wind.
07:16They're not.
07:17I couldn't agree with you more, Lo.
07:19You and I, same church, same pew, and for a change, you're sitting on my lap, which
07:24is very uncomfortable, quite frankly.
07:27When you look at the defense and you talk about the fix, is the fix within the building,
07:34is it schematic?
07:35Is it the personnel that they have?
07:37How do they go about slowing down the ground game?
07:39Because you're right, Lo, 12 carries for 72 yards from Connor over the last two drives.
07:45They got gashed in the A gap, the B gap, and even the C gap.
07:50Wow, nice with the uptick.
07:52I think that when you look at this team, you got it now.
07:55You have to start saying, we've got to slant to one side because we're getting pushed off
07:59the line.
08:00You're watching the double teams on the nose, the three techniques, three, four yards down
08:04the field.
08:05I'm seeing it with my eyes.
08:06So, yes, I think that right now they're getting overpowered.
08:10They're not the physical team.
08:11No one is scared of them anymore.
08:13You look at their throwing blows, it's not lack of effort.
08:19So I don't necessarily think it may be scheme.
08:22I think for this scheme, they don't have necessarily maybe the right guys up front because they're
08:26getting beat in the trenches.
08:28Fred Warner's been, you guys seen what he's been doing, the interceptions, punchouts,
08:32all the things you're doing.
08:33But they're making plays down the field.
08:35So you got to win in front and they're not winning in the trenches.
08:40So until that problem is fixed, because when your defense is playing well, guys, what does
08:46that do?
08:47That gives your offense more opportunities to score because your defense is getting three
08:50and outs.
08:51When you're not winning on defense in first and second down, now it's third, two, and
08:55third, three, guess what?
08:57It's run or pass.
08:58You have to stay ahead of the six on defense as well.
09:02The defense is not getting it done.
09:05Until that happens, until they make some changes, whether it's players, whether it's scheme,
09:12you're going to continue to struggle.
09:15Low Neal is with us here, of course, on Willard & Dibbs.
09:19You know darn well the kickoff show is coming each weekend here on 95.7 The Game and Low
09:24Neal, a big part of that, and that's coming again as we get ready for a game in just about
09:2948 hours.
09:30Low, let me ask you this.
09:32This isn't devil's advocate because I could sit here and nod my head a little bit at what
09:35you're saying, but to hear you talk as if it sounds like the Niners are just getting
09:41wholly outplayed when they play football, so I guess I would ask you, well, if that's
09:45the case, then why are they seemingly up by double digits when they enter the fourth quarter
09:50every week?
09:51Well, it looks like, to me, it looks like they're starting off fast.
09:54My dad always told me a fast horse runs fast, but he doesn't run long.
09:58You played against them, so all of a sudden, yeah, you're making mistakes, but guess what?
10:02You're not overcoming them.
10:03Yeah, you can be up by double digits, but what does that matter?
10:06You played against the Ram team.
10:07Did you guys know that Rams are not very good?
10:09The Rams didn't have two of their star receivers, and you lost, and it was more Niner fans there
10:13than it was Rams fans.
10:16So yeah, you have a 14-point lead.
10:18Hey, yesterday you saw Baltimore come down double digits, so does that mean that you're
10:23the better team?
10:24No, I'm not saying the Niners doesn't have more talent than some of these teams that
10:29they're playing, but right now, what my eyes show me, and watching the game, you can't
10:35say that they're better because they're getting outplayed in the fourth quarter.
10:39The fourth quarter, you see it, it was ferocious.
10:42They just, Conor lined up in the first half, they held him down, second half, they beat
10:46him up.
10:47So they wore the Niners out.
10:50Something's going on that they're just getting pushed around, they're getting beat up in
10:54the second half of ballgames, and the physical part of it, the bad part of it, it's mostly
10:59on the defensive side of the ball.
11:01When they need to make a stop, and need to be physical, and need to bow their necks and
11:05get a turnover, it's not happening.
11:08Yeah, and Arizona only faced a couple of third downs in the last two drives, and they converted
11:13one and the other one they converted on fourth down, so you're right, it looked like the
11:17Niners' defense wore down.
11:19How about the other side of the ball, Lowe, when you look at the 49er offense, which came
11:24up pointless in the second half, what are you seeing from the offensive line in particular
11:30as it pertains to pass protection and what Brock Purdy's being asked to do?
11:34Yeah, Brock Purdy, guys, this is probably his finest hour.
11:39His ability to make guys miss and run downfield and third down, pick it up with his legs,
11:44they're asking this guy to do too much.
11:46And he's taking it upon himself, you watch him back there, he's beating.
11:49You watch the way he zig and he zags and he's making guys miss and getting rid of the ball.
11:54He's doing a phenomenal job, but there's letdowns every time up front, there are some breakdowns
12:01fundamental, guys are taking turns.
12:03The team's just not playing collectively, they're not playing as a unit offensively
12:08with consistency.
12:09You see the way they're running the ball, they're getting physical, they're doing those
12:12things, but you just watch them.
12:14They take a play, they play three plays well, and then boom, you have a letdown.
12:18I just think that right now, something's missing, so when people like this team can just fix
12:23this and turn it on, I gotta see it to believe it, because the talent is there.
12:28They could very well be 4-0, they can be 5-0 right now, but they're not.
12:34You have to ask yourself, why not?
12:37And then tell this team, and that's where Shanahan has to say, I gotta coach more, coach
12:41is harder, I gotta get attention to details, why are we losing double-digit leads in the
12:46fourth quarter, and why are we not getting stops on third down?
12:49Why are we not converting on offense?
12:51What's going on in the second half when we need to score one more, put them away?
12:55Why are we putting the ball on the ground?
12:56This team's gotta figure out how to win.
12:59Just look at Kansas City Chiefs, go look at their turnovers this year compared to the
13:02Niners.
13:03You gotta find a way to win.
13:04Football is not easy, and football is not for the faint of heart.
13:08And this Niner team, they have to get their identity back, and they gotta find a way to
13:12win ballgames instead of find a way to lose ballgames.
13:15And that's what championship teams do, and right now, they are not playing championship
13:19football.
13:20Lowe, I want you to listen to this, and we would love your response, because of all the
13:24things that any football analysts have said about the 49ers through five games, to me
13:30this one's the scariest.
13:32This is the tree shaker.
13:34Brian Baldinger is asked by Bonte and Joe this morning, what's the identity of the 49ers?
13:40Listen to his answer.
13:41Slow.
13:42They just look slow, Joe.
13:44They look like a slow team.
13:47I don't see speed, I just don't see, just the whole operation.
13:52The pass rush, the receiver, they just look like a slow team to me.
13:58Now, look, when you're two and three, nothing feels good, and you start using superlatives
14:04like I'm doing, but if I'm finishing a sentence, that's what it looks like to me.
14:08And that's your team, though.
14:11That's what it looks like to me.
14:13When I hear that, I'm like, well, that's not fixable.
14:16So what's your reaction to that?
14:18Wow.
14:19Wow.
14:20I think he's spot on.
14:23When you look at the Niners, why aren't they getting off blocks?
14:28And you have to, you look at Balding, what he's saying, he's saying they're looking slow.
14:32They look like a shot fighter.
14:34You're starting off, boom, you're coming out, you're peppering them, and all of a sudden,
14:39you're losing a step.
14:40And it's attention to detail, and it's a mindset.
14:44They have to get this thing figured out, because that's why I keep saying, and that's why I
14:47tell you again, they'll lose against Seattle if you play this way.
14:52So until they make a collective effort, and that's everywhere, coaches got to co-charters,
14:56players got to play better.
15:01The attention to detail, this is about going about the attention to detail, everyone doing
15:05their job.
15:06Because right now, you're not good enough to make mistakes and win ballgames.
15:10So that tells you, you got to play better football, you got to play with less mistakes
15:14if you're going to win.
15:16Because what Balding's saying, they look slow, they're out of place, they just look like
15:19they're slow teams, they're beating them to the punch, they're beating them off the ball,
15:22they're beating them in the trenches.
15:24That isn't right now.
15:25You got to figure this thing out, man.
15:27If you don't, this team would be lucky to win eight games this year.
15:31Lowe, what's it like playing a Thursday coming off a Sunday, especially when you have to
15:36go on the road?
15:38You're sore.
15:39You're sore, you're tired, you're still tight, because Monday you come in, you freaking get
15:42a little stretch, you jump in the hot tub, you try to fight through the workout on Monday,
15:45you're still freaking beat up.
15:47Tuesday, usually off, but you can be off on Tuesday, so now on Tuesday, because it's a
15:51short week, you're going through a walkthrough, you're trying to loosen up, you got massage
15:55service there, you're freaking getting in the cold tub, you're icing, you're trying
15:58to get your body ready to go, and shoot, Wednesday you're traveling, Wednesday's another
16:03walkthrough with jogs, you got to start running, you got to get the muscles loosened, so you're
16:08fighting through it on Tuesday and Wednesday, some type of jog, some type of sweat, you
16:12got to get in, you can't just say, guys need the day off, you can't, you have to loosen
16:16them up.
16:17You cannot just say, oh, we got to play Thursday, no, it's all walkthroughs, no, you got to
16:21run, because on Thursday, you got to get back to full speed, you got to freaking be able
16:25to get on the field and run full speed, you can't just say, oh, week long, we're just
16:29going to sit around and walk and do walkthroughs, can't do it, won't do it, Shanahan's not doing
16:33it, but guess what, Seattle played and they lost too, so both these teams are going to
16:36be hungry, and this is going to be a huge test for the Niners to see if they can get
16:40off the canvas, because right now, they're on the canvas.
16:43I love it, Lo, and you say that you didn't suffer a Super Bowl hangover, but I'm looking
16:48at the box score, and you lost to a quarterback who went 5-for-16 for $1.17 against you in
16:54the playoffs.
16:55If that's not a hangover, I don't know what is, brother.
16:57Let me tell you what a hangover is, a hangover is when I come over here and spank your butt.
17:02You played against Trent, did you go, how many yards rushing they had?
17:06You played against Trent Dilford, oh, how many passes did you go against the guys that
17:09didn't score?
17:10They had 47 yards on the ground, they did nothing against you, daddy, where were you
17:13in the offensive package?
17:14It was, it was, Shannon Sharp had an 80, go look at his, he had one catch, this was a
17:20defensive, it was a low-scoring, hard-hitting, physical game.
17:26Ray Lewis stripped the ball from Eddie George and did a strip fumble and scored to end
17:31the game, but if you look at it, we missed the field goal, Shannon Sharp had one play
17:35tied in for 50-60 yards, that was the biggest play of the game.
17:41It was a field position, it was a snob monarchical, it was a physical game, don't talk about a
17:47hangover.
17:48These two teams that was physical, unfortunately, they won, we didn't, but that was the Super
17:54Bowl.
17:55You know it, go look, who played, what was the best game in the NFC or in the whole playoff?
18:00That game right there.
18:01The winner of that game was winning the Super Bowl, they motorboated it, they motorboated
18:05the Giants, motorboated them.
18:06I'm looking at the box score low and I'm looking for Lorenzo Neal anywhere and I'm seeing no
18:12catches and no totes, did you even play in that game, daddy?
18:16Yeah, I played, but let me tell you something, Mike Helmendanger and Preston Pleece got scared.
18:21They got scared, they wanted to go one back, ace, I was just so upset and disappointed,
18:28they scared.
18:29We can't run at Ray Lewis.
18:30When you're playing against a guy that can go down field and play like Ray Lewis, he's
18:33a home wrecker, I mean a freaking football wrecker, you go at him.
18:37That's when you play.
18:38If I'm playing against freaking Fred Warner back in the day, you run right at those guys.
18:41Don't let them use their ability, go sideline to sideline, you line up and you go right
18:45at them.
18:46That's what we didn't do against the Baltimore Raiders.
18:48You line up and let me go wear those guys out, they didn't want it like I wanted it.
18:52I'm fired up right now, Bibs.
18:53Come on, bring that same energy in here, you know where to find me, big fella, let's go.
18:58Come at me, daddy.
18:59I miss you, kid.
19:00You guys are the best.
19:01Let's go Niners.
19:02Hey, guys, put it this way, it's not over, but the Niners, seriously, this is a game
19:09that you need to win.
19:11You have a chance.
19:12Are you going to win?
19:13You might lose every game in your division.
19:15This is not good.
19:16Low, tell Dibs this is a must-win for the Niners.
19:20Yeah, I tell you what, this is a huge game.
19:25I mean, mathematically, if they lose, do I still got a chance because of the rest of
19:30the conference?
19:31Yes.
19:33But morale-wise and just now you haven't won one game in your own conference, that's not
19:39good.
19:40Not good.
19:41Yeah, I think I missed three field goals that day, I don't blame you.
19:43See, I told you.
19:44That game was a snobber-knocker.
19:45That's what I'm saying, bro.
19:46If we make those, we're in the Super Bowl, but you can't say hangover and we didn't come
19:52to play.
19:53We were ready, bro.
19:54I remember watching that game and I'm like, these Titans, they're in love with their press
20:01clippings.
20:02Like, I remember feeling that.
20:04I was feeling that.
20:05Wow.
20:06Wow.
20:07No, I'm kidding.
20:08Wow.
20:09I'm kidding.
20:10I'm kidding.
20:11Both you guys, go to hell.
20:12And he hugged up and he walked us off.
20:15That's incredible.
20:16There it is.
20:17That's my brother.
20:18It's a window into three and a half years of my career right there.
20:27You got snobber-knocker, y'all so many good ones.
20:31That was incredible.
20:33And he might be, as we speak, turning around his car in Fresno.
20:37He might be heading up here.
20:38I think he just slammed him into a wall.
20:41He just crashed his car.
20:43Both of you can go to hell.
20:45That's great.
20:46I love him.
20:47That's my guy.
