00:00This time, Chris, Hammond, Richard Hammond,
00:14here we go. The smallest cog is going to be exhibiting at the London Classic Car Show.
00:19To be honest, you've got my attention a bit now. Yeah, you see.
00:24But as the big day approaches, they're coming in the next hour.
00:28The wheels come off.
00:30Oh, for crying out loud.
00:32Restoring cars is not easy.
00:35Hey, look, London Classic Car Show.
00:37I need a nervous poop.
00:40Cars have been my life.
00:42Just give me a bit more!
00:44Talking about them.
00:46This is a force of nature.
00:47Thrashing them.
00:48That's not what I wanted to see.
00:51And crashing them.
00:54But now...
00:56Don't panic, I'm here.
00:58I'm fulfilling my lifelong dream
01:00and starting my own classic car workshop.
01:04Should I get my overalls on?
01:05Restoring some of the finest classic cars in the world.
01:09Heavenly automotive lord.
01:11With father and son team, Neil and Anthony Greenhouse.
01:15We're trusting him with our reputation.
01:17Look away.
01:18Bodging in process.
01:19Oh, you son of a...
01:20I'll be learning how to be a businessman.
01:22What you need is the smallest cog.
01:26To be honest, you've got my attention a bit now.
01:28And getting my hands dirty.
01:29I'm going to swallow this screw in a minute and die.
01:32Can you do it quietly?
01:33It'll test my bank balance.
01:34We could ruin the business.
01:36Quays and my relationships.
01:38You'll enjoy it.
01:39Will I?
01:40As I take my obsession to a whole new level.
01:42It's the best game I've ever played and the most terrifying.
01:56Hello, smallest cog. How can I help you?
01:58Yes, we are, sir. We are indeed.
02:00How did you hear about us?
02:02Oh, that is a beautiful car.
02:04DB4. Is it a GT?
02:06It is a GT.
02:07Lovely. Lovely.
02:09It's only a shame, sir, that you don't exist.
02:15This isn't quite the start I wanted.
02:18Um, the whole business plan is founded on...
02:21..take the skills, the experience of these guys,
02:25blend it with my profile,
02:28cos, you know, I'm on a telly,
02:31and put it in a brand-new state-of-the-art workshop
02:34that people can come and look at.
02:36Cos I can't say to somebody,
02:37bring your quarter of a million pound car here
02:39to spend another quarter of a million pounds on it,
02:41cos, I mean, it looks on everything, but, well...
02:45It doesn't have what we need.
02:47I mean, it looks on everything, but, well...
02:50It doesn't have what we need.
02:51It doesn't have the facilities, and it's...
02:54We need that workshop.
02:56But we've been having some planning issues
02:59with the new workshop build.
03:01A few weeks ago, all we had was two piles of dirt
03:05and some holes in the ground.
03:11It's been unbelievably annoying to be caught up in cancel red tape.
03:16But we have now got a green light on the planning.
03:20So I'm hoping to see progress today.
03:23And from what I hear from my new landlord, Hadrian,
03:26the builders have been making up for lost time.
03:36Looks a bit different now, doesn't it?
03:38Hey, it's just massive.
03:39Yeah, well, I kept telling you that, but you wouldn't believe me.
03:42No, but it's enormous.
03:44That's typical you, that is.
03:46It's made of metal and too big.
03:48I've got to dress it, make it look pretty,
03:50and I know you're going to laugh.
03:52You're going to be an appalling neighbour,
03:54but that is going to look beautiful.
04:00What is this?
04:01It's a power float.
04:02That's the bit of kit that's going to give you a nice floor.
04:05It puts the shine on concrete.
04:07A little sink?
04:08No, that's already gone off.
04:09Yeah, I've never seen one of those.
04:11Right, here we go.
04:13Hey!
04:15Oh, that is epic!
04:18I expect you'd like to have a go on that.
04:20I'm absolutely desperate to have a go.
04:23OK, so terms and conditions, landlord, tenant,
04:26don't **** with my floor.
04:29Who owns it?
04:30Me.
04:31Is it valuable?
04:3220 grand.
04:3320 grand, right.
04:35That's the key one, throttle, right.
04:37This one controls this side.
04:38Yeah.
04:39And this one controls this side.
04:41Right, you'll get the feel of it.
04:43We'd better flat out.
04:44Yeah.
04:50Hey!
04:51I'm totally out of control.
04:53I have absolutely no control over what's happening to me right now.
04:57I'm simply moving, I can't, I can do nothing.
05:00Hey!
05:04I don't know that I've done it very well,
05:06but it's brilliant.
05:08I'm going to get muddy boots.
05:10I've made a terrible...
05:11Urgh!
05:13That's not set.
05:15Sorry, sorry.
05:17I'm very pleased that I will have contributed to finishing the workshop.
05:20I will look at that floor every day and go,
05:22I did that dim in the middle, I made that myself.
05:26Thinking about it, we will be moving up a level,
05:28that is, that's big time.
05:30When's it going to be ready?
05:32Well, there's a few issues in the moment.
05:34British Steel have shut their order book for six weeks.
05:37I'll be ruined before I can take over the building.
05:40It's just space is what I need.
05:42Well, I can't do anything about the world's resources
05:45not being in Herefordshire at the moment.
05:54Right, so six weeks' delay on the steel,
05:58that's going to delay me two months getting into the workshop.
06:03And I've got to go and tell the guys.
06:05They're not going to be pleased.
06:11Chaps.
06:12Coffee?
06:13Coffees.
06:14There you go, that's yours.
06:16And there's one for you there.
06:17Oh, cheers, mate.
06:18You all right?
06:21So, bit of bad news.
06:23There's another problem with the workshop.
06:26Is it in what way?
06:27The problem is steel.
06:29You can't get hold of steel.
06:31So we've got permission, but we can't actually build it.
06:33We haven't got the metals.
06:34And I'm sorry, it's going to delay.
06:36It wouldn't delay after another, would it?
06:38I know.
06:39At the moment, we're a bit stuck.
06:40Anyway, no, no.
06:41No, no, no, we can carry on.
06:42Sorry.
06:43That's all right.
06:44Thank you for the coffee.
06:45You're welcome.
06:47Might soften the blow.
06:48How many more times are you going to have an excuse
06:50this place ain't going to be done, this new garage?
06:52I know.
06:53When he said at the beginning,
06:54I'll have a new garage, I'll get it sorted,
06:56and you get this picture and then all of a sudden you get...
06:58Like, you're going forward, moving back, moving back.
07:00It's gutting because you want to move on.
07:02You want to get on with it.
07:03Of course.
07:04Room wasn't built in a day, nor was our shed.
07:10We might have to wait for the new workshop,
07:13but that doesn't mean we have to sit still.
07:16Why are you driving?
07:17Well, you're in charge of calibration.
07:19And you're in charge of driving my car?
07:22Yeah.
07:25Monty, my beloved Jaguar XK150,
07:28is in the final stages of restoration.
07:31Once we've checked the speedo,
07:33we can get it out of this old workshop
07:35and at least create some space
07:37for any other work we can grab.
07:40Round number two, this is Graker's.
07:43We'll formate up on you, set it at 50 miles an hour.
07:4650, please.
07:48The old way's in a better, at a certain speed.
07:50I'll give a hand signal,
07:52and then we'll see if the calibration is worse.
07:55Fingers crossed.
07:57Okay, if you just hold it at 50, we'll pull alongside
08:00when we're at 50.
08:01This is the moment of truth.
08:03Coming up 47, 48, 49.
08:08Okay, show me when we've got 50.
08:1150.
08:13There it is.
08:14We're 50. We're on 50.
08:16Okay, let's try for a 60.
08:20We're 60.
08:2160? That's 60.
08:23It's about right. It's about right.
08:26Okay, let's go for 70.
08:28This is the belt and braces.
08:30The old XK150's going well.
08:32I'm going to jump to catch it.
08:38Okay.
08:40Yep, that's 70 for us. That's 70 for us.
08:4270.
08:45That worked. That worked.
08:47Been working on this car for a couple of years on and off,
08:50so for us, it's a really big moment
08:52that it's good to go on the road at long last.
08:56The workshop's now empty,
08:58but we've still got the issue of no customers.
09:04Everyone keeps telling me
09:06to get customers to give me their expensive cars to restore,
09:10we've got to win their trust.
09:12But how do we get the cars to restore
09:15to prove that we can restore the cars?
09:17It's just chicken and egg.
09:19And one thing occurs to me, which is,
09:22rather than wait for that car to come to me and do a good job,
09:27I go and get the car.
09:29I know the guys have restored my Jag,
09:32but we need something that's notoriously difficult to restore.
09:36And that's where I've had another idea.
09:39Jensen in Deceptor.
09:41My grandad worked there, so there's a connection there.
09:45It's all to do with proving my credibility,
09:47but they're known to be hard to restore.
09:50I floated this idea with Neil.
09:53He wasn't entirely pleased, cos they are difficult to work on.
09:57But he agrees, if I can find a car that is complete,
10:01it might be doable.
10:03All I've got to do is find them the right one.
10:07That's where I could go wrong.
10:10Well, I moulded over, slept on it,
10:14and then spent £17,000.
10:24Guys?
10:28Ahem.
10:30I've got a car.
10:32I've got a car.
10:34I've got a car.
10:37Ahem.
10:39Oh, yeah!
10:41Yes! Jensen Interceptor Mk2.
10:45Oh, my God. That is a job.
10:47That is...
10:49I mean, it's solid. It's not bad. It's not bad.
10:52Somebody's taken a leap of faith buying this little beauty.
10:55I want it to be mint. Really beautiful.
10:59Can you reach the pedals? Yes.
11:03Oh! What do you reckon?
11:05To be honest, you've got my attention a bit now.
11:07Yeah! You see? You see?
11:09It'd be a good advert for us if we get it done nice.
11:11It'd be good for us to show what we can do.
11:13Problem is, they're very, very complicated, handmade.
11:17Nothing fits off another car. You can't just go and buy bits for it.
11:20You can get panels, but even the panels you can buy, you've got to make fit.
11:24What could we be talking, then?
11:26You could spend £100,000 on this car.
11:29I'm not joking.
11:31And I'm not laughing.
11:36Restoring the Jensen will take months.
11:39We can't take up space in the workshop
11:41on a car that's not bringing in any cash,
11:44so it's going to have to live at Neil's house.
11:47Thanks for lending us your garage. As long as you sweep the floor.
11:50I will. Don't worry.
11:52Can you imagine what this car must have looked like when it was new?
11:55These were the sexiest cars.
11:57This car, back in the day, was known as the Brummie Ferrari.
12:00These cars were handmade.
12:02And the problem is, there's not many of these cars left,
12:05so you can't just nip down the road, borrow your mates and go,
12:08can I have a look under the bonnet, cos there's not many of them.
12:11My grandfather touched this car and said,
12:14send that out into the world, give it to its customer.
12:17Interior first, I reckon. Seats.
12:19Yeah.
12:21Careful, man, careful, careful.
12:23Careful, man, careful, careful. I'm being careful.
12:26What? Don't scratch anything.
12:28You've got to keep these things as patterns.
12:30You might not be able to get a piece for it.
12:32Don't throw anything away. Keep everything.
12:34Next.
12:36I'm excited, cos my granddad was here.
12:40Tell me it's paperwork.
12:42God, I love paperwork.
12:44I'm obsessive about paperwork.
12:46I keep seeing the name Pilkington.
12:48A. R. Pilkington of Pilkington Brothers Limited.
12:51Flat glass division, so that's...
12:53Yeah, they were the people who invented flat glass.
12:55He was Sir Pilkington.
12:57This glass was probably made by Pilkington,
12:59so he made his own glass for his own car.
13:01Guarantee claim.
13:03So he obviously went back with a few problems.
13:05This is in December 1970, the year it was born.
13:08This is from A. R. Pilkington to Mr Kendall, 23rd April 1971.
13:12During the week which you have my card available,
13:14I would ask you to ensure that your service department
13:17spends sufficient time on it to eradicate the various minor defects
13:20which are very annoying.
13:22The most important thing is naturally the back axle,
13:24which you will be changing.
13:26Ho-ho-ho!
13:28The engine is very rough,
13:30and I suspect that there was a hole somewhere in the exhaust system.
13:33I mean, this just goes on and on and on.
13:35And he's so cross, before he's signed it, he's written in hand,
13:37Please let me know when the car is ready.
13:39I don't want it back half finished.
13:42It was born, came out into the world and disintegrated.
13:46So we've got to make it better than it came out of the factory, technically.
13:49Oh, yeah, please, for God's sake.
13:51But then your grandad signed off.
13:53Oh, right, that's my lineage. He was having an off day.
13:57In many ways, my grandfather is responsible for this whole venture,
14:00this whole workshop mission,
14:02because I want to, in my own little way, walk in his footsteps.
14:06But I've just bought an example of a car that he said,
14:10That's great, send it ahead.
14:12And it appears to have fallen apart weeks later.
14:20DOG BARKS
14:26Oh, what we've got here is the rear tailgate off the Jensen Interceptor.
14:31When the windscreen was in it and the rubbers covering everything,
14:34it all looked OK, but it's not good news, I'm afraid.
14:37It's rotted from the inside out.
14:39It's very hard to estimate the amount of labour.
14:42You could spend probably five, six days repairing this.
14:46Until it comes back from the sandblasters and we get it stripped and blasted,
14:50then we won't really know.
14:52But time will tell.
15:05Rhodes Car Shows.
15:07This is about the London Classic Car Show.
15:10The decision the organiser of the London Classic Car Show made
15:13at the end of January to move from April to June has proven insightful,
15:16with the outdoor show almost certain to go ahead.
15:19So that's a classic car show.
15:22And I need to be at it.
15:24And it's been organised by Chris Hughes,
15:28who I know, like, really well,
15:31cos he used to do the live shows that we did all over the world.
15:37PHONE RINGS
15:40Hello? Chris?
15:42Yes? Hammond.
15:44What, Richard Hammond?
15:46Oh, here we go. Yes.
15:48Hello, mate. Hi!
15:50This is a serious call. Yes, OK.
15:52So I've launched this classic car restoration business. Yes.
15:56And I need to give it, like, a push. I need people to see it. Excellent.
15:59I need people to see who we are.
16:01So are you going to buy a stand off me? Is that what you want?
16:04Are you ringing to give me money?
16:06I can't do that.
16:08And can you not, just as a mate, you know?
16:11OK, so it is a real business?
16:14Yes, it totally is, yes.
16:16And it's a restoration business? Yep.
16:18So I'd potentially do a bit of before, after and during restoration.
16:22That's quite clever. I like that idea.
16:25And then people will look at the cars and then get chatting to you.
16:28OK, one of the Rs. Yeah.
16:30Could you bring my cars to me, then?
16:34Yes, then, in which case...
16:37Cos you wouldn't know this cos you've never been business trained.
16:40Yeah. But in the art of negotiating,
16:43one of the key principles, if anyone ever asks for something,
16:46you're supposed to ask for something back.
16:48Otherwise it demeans you.
16:50So what do I get in return? What would you want in return?
16:54I guess the obvious thing is to whore your celebrity.
16:57Is to promote your face a little bit.
16:59So I get to sell a few tickets on the back of your face.
17:02OK, that's a deal. Is it? Yeah, I'll do that.
17:05Cheers, Chris. Bye. Bye.
17:07Woo-hoo!
17:09OK, I've...
17:11Dealing with real business people is terrifying
17:14because they're actually quite good at this, so you...
17:17I think I've done all right out of that.
17:19And I like the before, during and after thing.
17:22I'm very glad I thought of it just then whilst talking to Chris Hughes.
17:26Chaps, I have had a brilliant idea.
17:29The smallest cog is going to be exhibiting at the London Motor Show.
17:35I've blagged us a stand. We'll be there, smallest cog.
17:37Our own actual stand? Our own stand.
17:39And they want the stand to have a bit of a story to it.
17:41And what we've cooked up is three cars on it. Yeah.
17:45And we have an after restoration,
17:47cos this is pushing us as restorers. Ah, right.
17:49This? Monty. Yeah, after restoration.
17:52Then we have a during. Jenson. Yeah.
17:55So we need to get that some work done.
17:58Work in progress, sort of. Exactly right.
18:00And then the third would be a before restoration.
18:03So that's one we haven't done, that's one we've bought,
18:05that's one we've got. Ah, right. But we haven't got nothing.
18:08What if we were to buy a car and restore it and sell it?
18:15And make some money? I'll pay for it.
18:17But the company will have to pay me back when we sell it.
18:20Just be careful when you... Yeah, yeah.
18:22Buy wisely. Yeah.
18:23Yes, all right, I will buy wisely.
18:25I'll let you know what I'm looking for. Good idea, though.
18:27I like it. It's good, innit? Yeah, I like that.
18:29Remember this, you make the money when you buy the car,
18:31not when you sell it, so buy it right.
18:33Is that another saying? Yep. Good.
18:36Measure twice, cut once. Exactly.
18:41Our workshop's not ready.
18:42We can't take people to our new workshop. No.
18:45So we take our work to the public.
18:49When you go to a London Classic Car Show,
18:51you're out there in front of the whole world.
18:53It's not local, it's worldwide.
18:57Scary, but... It is scary.
18:59But then again, if you never had that bit of adrenaline,
19:01then it wouldn't be worth doing.
19:03Wouldn't be doing. At all.
19:05You're not going on a first date.
19:15I've got the after, my Jaguar XK,
19:17I need the during, I've got that, the Jensen, I need the before.
19:24I think it's a 70s or 80s fast Ford.
19:28They are flying up in value.
19:30You see, Ford Capri 20...
19:32Oh, Cosworth.
19:34Oh, see, great stuff here.
19:41So, hang on, there is one UK-supplied car.
19:45That's good.
19:48Midnight blue.
19:50That could be it.
19:52I shall have another gin and think about that.
19:55Drinking and bidding is a good idea.
20:08Do you want to grab that up so it doesn't bounce off down the road?
20:13Today, the Jensen is off to the sound blasters.
20:19Now we will find out how bad it is.
20:24It's a big day for removing years of history and rust.
20:30I think Richard is going to have a big shock when this comes back.
20:33Little bits of rust like that
20:35turn into a big piece of rust like this.
20:41At the moment, he's still living with the romance of
20:44what it's going to be like, this car, nice sunny day, driving it.
20:48But to get to that dream, you've got to get through the nightmare first.
20:55Right, I'd better get the picture up, then.
20:58She always cuts it from a picture of Robert Downey Jr.
21:06Can I get you a coffee?
21:08No, thank you.
21:09Do you want some magazines to read?
21:11No, thank you.
21:13Put your head down a little bit, please.
21:16So, how do you think it's performing at the moment,
21:19the old smallest cog?
21:21Well, people are receiving it warmly.
21:24They like to hear about it.
21:26Got the phone working yet?
21:28I've got to top it up. I don't know how to do that.
21:31What, pay-as-you-goes? Yeah.
21:33Why didn't you buy a proper phone?
21:37Saving money.
21:38That's a bit crap, isn't it?
21:40Because if you were ringing a business to get your car fixed
21:43and you rang the number and it went boo,
21:46you'd just think, well, that doesn't exist.
21:48And you'd never ring it again, would you?
21:50So don't you think that was a bit daft, to say the very least?
21:54You need to do a business plan, like a proper business plan.
21:58But a business plan isn't going to bring money in, is it?
22:01Well, a business plan is going to work out
22:03what's coming in against what's coming out.
22:05What does that mean, coming in?
22:07It'll let you see how much money you need to generate from the business...
22:10I know how much I need to generate.
22:12How much? About £9,000 a month.
22:14Falling a little bit short, aren't we?
22:16Just a little tiny bit.
22:18Honestly, you're unbelievable sometimes.
22:23Not in a good way.
22:39The London Classic Car Show is a week away
22:43and I've been shopping for the car that we can take
22:46for our before-restoration exam.
22:49Bought it at auction.
22:51Guys haven't seen it yet.
22:53I think they're going to be... I reckon they'll be pleased.
23:02This is a doubly exciting day for you
23:04because you get to come into my secret lair.
23:07I have bought this.
23:10It's cool. Mark II RS2000.
23:13I've been quite anxious.
23:15I paid £24,000.
23:17But...
23:19do these go for £40,000, £45,000, £50,000?
23:22No, they do, yeah.
23:23Depending upon what parts we need,
23:25there's £10,000, £15,000 grand profit in here for us.
23:28That pays for running costs for a month.
23:31You might have the lucky dream of buying a car.
23:33I'm hoping you have.
23:34Because sometimes you have got to be brave and take a chance.
23:38I think we're all excited about this one.
23:40You're containing it really well.
23:42I never show too much excitement until I have a really good look.
23:45You never show too much excitement unless it's your idea?
23:47Yeah.
23:48Then it's amazing!
23:51RS2000, rare car, no?
23:53And they're making astronomical money.
23:55They're making big money.
23:56If you get a nice one, they're big money.
23:58Tell me I bought well and my pride is on the line.
24:00Don't put your pride in your back pocket for a minute.
24:03I don't care for your opinion.
24:05Fortune favors the bold.
24:07If fortune favors the bold, you'd be minted by now.
24:10The problem is we've got to be careful,
24:12because if we say to him, oh, it's a good buy,
24:14he'll go out and buy more.
24:15He'll go and buy everything.
24:16In a window, he will drop the claim.
24:17That's the way it works.
24:18So, between me and you, it's done all right, but...
24:20Don't tell him.
24:21Don't tell him.
24:22So, London Car Show, get it back, crack on.
24:24And sell it and make money.
24:31The Jensen's finally back from the sandblaster.
24:34Good job, too.
24:35The classic car show is less than a week away
24:37and Neil hasn't done a scrap of work on the car.
24:41We'll find out now what she's really like.
24:44Moment of truth.
24:52Wait, wait, it's going on the ramps.
24:56Am I the only one that's scared?
25:02Right, come on, let's have a look. Let's do it.
25:04Let's see what this water gets on there.
25:06Give it a good shake.
25:09Oh, for crying out loud.
25:11Really?
25:12Do you want to go for another one?
25:13No!
25:18Well, what are we seeing?
25:19It's had a bit of tinworm, but...
25:23that looks all good, doesn't it?
25:25Well, I am surprised.
25:26The boot floor's usually rotted on a Jensen,
25:28and that's really good there.
25:29Yeah, not bad.
25:30She's not bad at all.
25:31I think you've been very lucky.
25:33Whoa, wait a minute!
25:35I haven't been very lucky.
25:36I've used judgement and skill.
25:39I bought well.
25:41No, you haven't bought well.
25:42No, lucky.
25:43Say it so somebody else can hear it.
25:46Right, OK.
25:47It's never going to happen.
25:48I'm not going to get that out of him.
25:50No, you've done all right.
25:51Could be a lot worse.
25:52Passed the initial inspection.
25:54So far, so good.
25:56Look at that.
25:58What we've got here is the rear tailgate.
26:01See where it's double-skinned, look?
26:03And the skin underneath is rotted away, look.
26:05That is living absolute hell on earth, that is.
26:10You want to have a look at this?
26:11Oh.
26:12Oh, yes.
26:13Oh, it's a bit lacy.
26:14Can you buy these?
26:15No.
26:16It's remake this or scrap the car.
26:19Yeah, yeah.
26:20Can you do it?
26:22I can do it, yeah.
26:23I can definitely do it.
26:24But what's the next question?
26:25How long?
26:26How long?
26:27I knew you were going to say that.
26:28It's just, it's midnight oil again, isn't it?
26:30It's hours and hours and hours, but...
26:32I'm eating company resources with this project, aren't I?
26:35I mean, look at that.
26:36How are you going to make that?
26:37The rest of the car, it's got issues,
26:39but this is the big one to get sorted, yeah.
26:46Are you cross with me, Neil?
26:47No, no, no, I'm not cross with you.
26:49You've gone quite...
26:50I am, really, but...
26:51Yeah, I think you're cross with me.
26:54We're just days away from the London Classic Car Show.
26:58Neil has a plan for the Jensen,
27:00but time is not on his side.
27:05What I would like to do is repair one side of the car
27:09and just try and make it look like new on one side.
27:13The actual door frame body shell is good,
27:15so we're going to replace the door skin,
27:17new wing, new door skin,
27:19and then we're going to top it off
27:21with a brand-new rear quarter,
27:22so all this side of the car will be new,
27:25and it'll be a before and after,
27:26so you can see this has been transformed
27:28from a rusty old car into, basically,
27:30this side will be like a new body shell.
27:33The downside to that is that these cars are bespoke.
27:36Back in the day, they're handmade, hand-finished,
27:38so everything has got to be made to fit,
27:41and that goes for the new panels.
27:43The problem is, the Classic Car Show is not far away,
27:47and I just want to do the very best I can
27:49to promote the business and promote our skills,
27:51but I'm just worried about the time.
27:53I've got so much work to do.
27:56How are we?
27:57Morning.
27:58Oh.
27:59Breakfast. You deserve a treat.
28:02You're working hard, and here it is.
28:04Ah, look at that.
28:05Pastries, many and various.
28:08Thank you for doing this for us.
28:21Hi.
28:22Pastries, many and various.
28:26I think I'm going to slurp you this.
28:28Feast, gentlemen.
28:36The London Classic Car Show people want the cars tomorrow instead of Friday.
28:40You're taking them out?
28:42No, seriously, no.
28:46That's not going to be nowhere near well.
28:48Right, we're there on the Saturday.
28:52But the show's set up Thursday.
28:55Oh, right.
28:56And they want the cars there to build the show around it.
29:01So this, then, is a sweetener, is it?
29:03It's not a sweetener. You deserve it.
29:04You're working really hard and you need food
29:07because it may be that you're going to have to work really, really hard.
29:12Tomorrow morning, afternoon?
29:14I'm trying to push it as far along tomorrow as I can
29:16and I'm trying to buy some extra time for that,
29:18but I'm just not making any more promises that I can't keep.
29:21The sun's gone away, now.
29:23Is it? This is quite depressing, isn't it?
29:26Bake a roll and then...
29:28Then cry? Then cry.
29:30And then we'll get on with it, then?
29:31That's the attitude.
29:34Never rains but it pours, is it?
29:37I was a bit suspicious this morning when he turned up
29:39with loads of food and drink.
29:42Just have to push on now and get it done, ready to go.
29:44Just get them gone.
29:49The motor trade is not easy.
29:51Restoring cars is not easy.
29:54That panel will come out later, won't it?
29:56As part of my deal with classic car show organiser Chris Hughes,
30:01I've agreed to take a well-known car to add to my supposed success.
30:07And the car has arrived.
30:09Here's to you, Chris.
30:12I'm a bit nervous.
30:14I'm a bit nervous.
30:15I've got to make sure I don't forget.
30:17I have to make sure I'm not forgetting.
30:19I'm a bit nervous.
30:21I'm a bit nervous.
30:22I'm a bit nervous.
30:23I'm a bit nervous.
30:25Add to my supposed celebrity appeal.
30:30Right.
30:36This is Oliver, a 1962 little yellow Opel Kadett
30:39that I drove across Botswana in a previous life.
30:44Oh.
30:47That puncture means it's not drivable.
30:51And there is no spare wheel. I didn't think there was.
30:54And there isn't.
30:56Erm... Oh, God.
30:58Right, I am on a deadline because I've got to get to the workshop quickly
31:02to get all these cars away.
31:04They want this one to go with them.
31:06Oh, God.
31:08Right.
31:10Erm...
31:11OK.
31:15Oh, please, Fitz, come on!
31:19Oh, there, look, it's just... It's just perished.
31:22That shouldn't have been stood.
31:23I'm going to have to go and see if I can get it repaired at the tyre place.
31:27Wallet.
31:34Oh, for crying out loud.
31:36What?
31:37Brilliant.
31:40Hang on, let me just get a call-and.
31:42Assuming this is the right place.
31:45Hang on, let me just get a call-and.
31:47Assuming this thing is connected to the thing, is it?
31:50Oh.
31:52Welcome to the EE...
31:53Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
31:54I'm sorry, but the person you've called is not available.
31:57It bloody is. Oh, OK.
31:59Yeah, yeah, not a problem, mate. Yeah, yeah.
32:00Yeah, no, no, I'll see you then. OK.
32:02Ta-ra. Bye-bye.
32:06Oh, no.
32:09Hello?
32:11And?
32:13Hello?
32:15Yes.
32:19Yes.
32:22Oh!
32:24Yeah.
32:29It's like...
32:33Dance. Offer him a cup of tea.
32:35Tea, yeah.
32:41Hard trying to do that.
32:45OK, not a problem.
32:46All right, mate. Stay cool.
32:47See you. Bye.
32:49Yeah!
32:51I don't like it in the real world.
32:53I've had a lovely time in TV world for the best part of 30 years.
32:56Right.
32:57Please be open. Please be feeling generous.
33:03Seems to me they're quite nice folk.
33:06Right.
33:07Some begging is going to occur.
33:08This may be undignified.
33:15Anything at all that can be the same size as that?
33:18It's...
33:20It's perished, I think.
33:22No.
33:23Sorry.
33:24Let me just double-check.
33:26He says he hasn't got one.
33:27He said, well, he said, we won't have one.
33:29Oh.
33:33Hello?
33:34Hi, Dad.
33:35Hi.
33:36Bit of a dilemma.
33:37What?
33:38Delivery truck is coming in half hour.
33:40For what?
33:41To pick up the car.
33:42For what?
33:44To pick up the cars for the car show.
33:46You're having a laugh, aren't you?
33:47Half one, two o'clock, he said.
33:49Richard's stuck in Ross with Oliver with a flat tyre
33:52and I need the RS.
33:53Well, just hang on there.
33:54Then I'll bring the RS over now a bit quick,
33:56get out of the way,
33:57and then you'll just see what happens when Richard gets back here.
34:01I'm just worried about Oliver now, stuck in Ross.
34:04At least the sun's out, eh?
34:06I'm not very happy, really, because the plan was
34:08to get half the car restored,
34:10get half the body panels on this side.
34:12So I'm going to just place this wing on
34:14just to give it a bit of a look, a feel
34:17for what it will look like when the panels are on there.
34:27The kind man at the garage inflated Oliver's tyre.
34:30How long it'll last is anyone's guess.
34:33It's like watching F1.
34:38Begin!
34:42Ha-ha!
34:50The lorry's going to be churning up in about 20 minutes.
34:53I just hope all is worth it in the end,
34:55because it's a lot of stress,
34:58and stress I don't need, really.
35:01Come on, everybody.
35:02This is the diversion causing this.
35:05Why today?
35:08There's never been this much traffic on this road.
35:13I've never seen it.
35:15I mean, who comes here?
35:17There's only me.
35:21Transport is going to be here any second,
35:24and Richard's hopefully going to be here soon,
35:26because I'm going to be in a lot of trouble
35:28with the lorry driver, I think.
35:31Not too far away.
35:32Oh, and then we come across a traffic jam.
35:34Oh, lovely.
35:35What's going on here now?
35:38I am worried about that tyre.
35:39That is a big one.
35:40I'm worried about that tyre.
35:42That is pulling out. I can feel it.
35:46Oh, lorry's great.
35:47Here we go.
35:49It is so close now.
35:52This is to the wire.
35:54You all right, mate?
35:55It's one of those days, isn't it?
35:58Bloody hell, the lorry's here.
36:02Well done, Ollie.
36:04You total hero.
36:05Plucky little star.
36:07I do love you.
36:11It's all good fun, isn't it?
36:14What's the tyre like?
36:15Oh, lovely, yeah.
36:16Oh, you're a very lucky boy.
36:18Oh, that is...
36:19Oh, look, that last breath.
36:21We've got a nice driver, which I was worried about.
36:23That's good, yes. You don't want a horrible driver,
36:24then you're in a world of pain.
36:25I was worried.
36:27I'll pull you push.
36:28Yeah.
36:29Here we go.
36:30Here we go.
36:31Here we go.
36:32Whoa!
36:36Keep coming.
36:37Fat boy Slim's got a sweat. Hang on.
36:39You all right?
36:40No.
36:42I've got a headache.
36:46I've also had an email from Kamla, the accountant.
36:51I have got to put some more money into this business today.
36:54There's a deadline beyond which you can't go
36:56because you're, they call it, trading insolvently.
36:58So, it means I'm going to have to put a large sum of money...
37:0450 grand.
37:06...into the bank camp to keep us going.
37:10I really need this show to work.
37:12I need...
37:13I mean, it's all, it's fun and games,
37:15but I need, I need somebody to come to the show and say,
37:18these guys are good, restore this for me.
37:20Okay!
37:24It's going to be quite exposing being on that stand for the business.
37:27If we give the impression that we're just an indulgence
37:30for some bloke off the telly, we've had it.
37:33We could, we could ruin the business quite easily.
37:40LONDON CLASSIC CAR SHOW
37:45Ah, look, London Classic Car Show.
37:47There it is.
37:49Look, Steph!
37:51It's like going to the circus as a kid, except we're in it.
37:54Mustang. Oh!
37:55Oh, SL.
37:56Very nice.
37:57Ooh, road with a test.
38:00Right, this is officially quite exciting.
38:03Look at all those cars.
38:05I need a nervous poop.
38:11Right, um, should we go and scope out?
38:13Yeah.
38:14Not get distracted by the cars.
38:18Coming in.
38:22Look, it's there.
38:23Oh.
38:26Mate, that's another of your executive suitcases.
38:30Pull your T-shirt down.
38:32You're representing our business now.
38:34We are the public face of the smallest club.
38:40See?
38:41Before, that's for the escort.
38:43Ah, right.
38:44During, that's for that.
38:45After.
38:47And I've got merch.
38:50Oh, you have gone over the...
38:52Oh, mates, look.
38:56One man and his colt.
38:58Genius!
38:59I like that. That's clever.
39:00There's other ones as well. I've got...
39:03Cogzilla.
39:05Yeah? We're a brand.
39:06Like it, they wanted.
39:07And I have also prepared...
39:12...team T-shirt.
39:14Wait a minute.
39:15Um...
39:16The logo's on the wrong side.
39:20Huh?
39:21Logo's on the back.
39:22Has it all run backwards?
39:23Sorry.
39:25Sorry.
39:27See, it's two minutes to ten.
39:29Two minutes?
39:30Yeah, two minutes.
39:31I know, we're officially not ready.
39:32Oh, yeah, people are now going to be...
39:34Oh, right.
39:35We're not quite ready.
39:38Yeah, that's good.
39:44Gentlemen.
39:46Hang on.
39:47Yeah, that's better.
39:48That's better. Nice, good work.
39:49Well done.
39:50We are ready.
39:56What do you do when you go to a stand-up show?
39:59We're supposed to meet people and talk to them.
40:01That's what we do.
40:02What we do.
40:03Might struggle with your, uh...
40:06Who you are.
40:07Hello.
40:11Hello, how are you?
40:13Do you mind if we take a picture?
40:14Of course not.
40:15Oh, fine.
40:18I know what you're thinking.
40:20Damn, he's slightly taller than I am.
40:21I know that's what's in your head.
40:24I know it.
40:25Can I give you a card?
40:26Richard this morning, all I've seen him do
40:28is stand there and sign autographs.
40:30Well, we're doing our bit.
40:31Signing pretty pictures of himself.
40:32All you're in at the moment is Oliver Top Gear,
40:34Oliver Top Gear, Oliver Botswana, Oliver this, and it's like...
40:38Forget Oliver.
40:39Look what we actually do.
40:40Did you see any of his selfies he's been doing?
40:43Yeah, I think it's just a TV show, like.
40:45Yeah, I think it's a gimmick, flashing the pan like a bit of...
40:47Yeah, but it's nice, it's our idea, isn't it?
40:50Right, I'm going to get an example of each one and put them up.
40:52What do you think? Then if I put them there...
40:54There's a large Cogzilla.
40:56And you want a medium Hoola the Cogs.
40:58Is this the till?
40:59Neil, we've opened a clothing company.
41:01Well, I've lost Dad and Richard now, haven't I, to selling merchandise.
41:04It's very exciting.
41:06We might actually have another way of covering our monumental and ongoing losses.
41:12Thing is, they're selling merchandise, which we might take 200 quid if we're lucky.
41:16But really, if we could talk to people,
41:18we could make more money by getting jobs booked in.
41:20That's been a flurry of activity.
41:22I didn't realise it was going to be that busy.
41:27Of course, no-one launched a successful business on T-shirts alone.
41:32Well, perhaps they did, but I've got to get networking.
41:37There are the Jensen's.
41:39Lots of them.
41:41What did the guy say when you talked to him and said,
41:43-"Can you work on that?" -"He's not going to do another one."
41:45Yeah, that's what I was thinking.
41:47This is Neil, who's currently doing one for us at the smallest car.
41:49Hi, Neil. Nice to meet you.
41:51It's a lovely car, isn't it?
41:52You've got your work cut out, because they're not an easy car to work on.
41:55Everything's handmade, nothing fits,
41:57because every Jensen is built specifically to that particular car.
42:00He hasn't slept for about a week and a half.
42:02I don't think he would. It's not an easy job.
42:05But this is my baby.
42:07My dream from when I was 14.
42:08Why Interceptors?
42:10Just the name Jensen Interceptors. It sold me.
42:13I wouldn't dream of buying anything else.
42:14Even if I won a lottery tomorrow, this is my car.
42:16You should come and see us. And if there's any work...
42:18That anyone needs doing...
42:19Look, that's us. There we are.
42:21Come and see us.
42:23Nice meeting you.
42:24Cheers, buddy. Thank you very much.
42:28We've taken on that Jensen.
42:30And that's going to be quite a big job.
42:35Are you Jensen folk?
42:37Yes, we run Property Bridge.
42:39We're probably the largest outfit restoring Jensens that you can find.
42:43Right. Well, we've got one.
42:44Yeah, there it is. It's not done yet.
42:48What's the secret, then, to scaling up our brand-new little business?
42:53Get one under your belt.
42:55And set a deadline as to when you do want to finish it.
42:57Because we've done so many now,
42:59it means that we've got an understanding
43:01of how long something takes to be done on a car, etc.
43:04Those lessons have been learned over a long time.
43:06We need to steal their fire.
43:10Overall, a really positive day.
43:12Some great things to see, and I enjoyed it.
43:15And I guess now, a lot of business cards handed out.
43:18We wait and see what jobs come in.
43:23This could easily turn out to be a very expensive folly that I regret.
43:28Do you realise, seriously, how much money we've spent on this car?
43:31How much is a new oven?
43:32You're looking questionable.
43:34Got to make him see it's not a game, is it? It's serious.
43:37OK, I'm going to go and have a little cry.
43:40We are literally going to run out of money.
43:42It's all very real now.
