00:00The capital Port-au-Prince and the densely populated surrounding areas didn't stand a chance.
00:09The same amount of energy as 35 atomic bombs, just like the one that destroyed the city of Hiroshima,
00:16was released in 30 seconds of intense shaking.
00:21Port-au-Prince was simply ripped apart.
00:26What shocked me the most is the magnitude and the horror of the devastation.
00:32It was just unimaginable.
00:35It looked like a war zone.
00:37People were crying, people were looking for loved ones under the rubble.
00:42Sometimes with bare hands they were trying to get them out.
00:45It was really extremely painful and hard to live through.
00:50You cannot find no person have life down this rubble.
00:56No life.
00:59The Haiti earthquake was a magnitude 7, which classed it as a major earthquake.
01:04But how exactly are earthquakes measured?
01:08Earthquakes are measured either by the energy they release or by the damage they are doing.
01:15The energy that is released is measured with instruments that we call seismographs.
01:20And they measure the amount of energy that is released at a certain distance.
01:24Graphically you can see the different waves that travel.
01:27And from the distance and the amount of energy that is released,
01:31we can determine the magnitude of the earthquake.
