00:00What is the definition of a disaster for professionals like myself?
00:06It is an event that is of such magnitude
00:09that the local or the national government cannot face it alone.
00:14Efforts to get food, medical aid and water to the survivors
00:18were hindered by the breakdown in communication systems.
00:30Although the runways at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport were intact,
00:35damage to the control tower meant that planes couldn't take off or land safely.
00:42At the main seaport, piers had collapsed and cranes had been knocked over,
00:47so ships were not able to unload urgently needed supplies.
00:51Almost all paved roads were blocked due to severe surface damage,
00:55fallen trees and debris from collapsed buildings.
01:01In the hours following the quake, survivors dug through rubble,
01:05often with their bare hands, to rescue family and friends.
01:12Dusk fell just two hours after the earthquake.
01:16In the eerie darkness, rescuers had to use flashlights
01:20as they continued to claw at the rubble, trying to reach those trapped beneath.
01:25Everywhere is dark.
01:26She's just like an incredible bright star in the middle of this, you know, darkness
01:30and it's a wonderful feeling.
01:34That night, many people in Haiti were forced to sleep on the streets,
01:38either because their homes had been destroyed
01:41or because they were terrified of aftershocks.
01:45When a fault moves and causes an earthquake,
01:47it changes the distribution of the stresses around the fault.
01:51So aftershocks are generated, they're usually smaller than the main shock,
01:56but there have been cases where they're almost as large as the main shock.
