University attempts to break Guinness Record for world's largest computer programming lesson, in Lisbon

Nearly 1,700 students aged between 12 and 67 flocked to the University of Lisbon's IST School of Technology on Saturday, September 12, to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest computer programming lesson in a single venue.

The previous record grouped 724 participants in Dallas, in the United States, on Oct. 31, 2016.

"The final total was counted on how many people were here and 1,668 participants were achieved," said Guinness World Records Adjudicator Paulina Sapinska after the 75-minute session.

00:00So, we had this idea about a year and a half ago, because as you know, Portugal is somehow
00:11a leading country producing technology and we thought that perhaps if we get the world
00:17Guinness record of the biggest programming lesson in the world, perhaps that can somehow
00:21expand the perception that international communities have on the technology landscape we have here
00:29in the country.
00:30We have an immense amount of engineers and amazing companies and youth, a lot of people
00:36willing to make a difference.
00:40It's my pleasure to be here today in Lisbon for the largest computer programming lesson.
00:45In order for this record to be broken, we needed to achieve 724 participants in the
00:51lesson.
00:52Everyone needed to stay for the entire lesson, which needed to last at least 30 minutes.
00:57The final total was counted on how many people were here and 1,668 participants was achieved.
