00:00Hey, what's up guys, my name is Devin, I play drums for Kane Hill.
00:13We're out here with Signs of the Swarm right now on the Decade of the Swarm tour of Sulfur
00:18156 Silence and Awaken Providence, and I kind of want to give you a little rundown of what
00:24I've got going on.
00:25So the drums I have right now, it's a little bit of a combination that I've cultivated
00:30over the past two or three years.
00:33Let's start with the kick drum.
00:35This is a 90s Pearl Session Select.
00:38It was a red stain, and I sanded it down, re-stained it black to kind of match the rest
00:44of the kit that I have going on.
00:4722 by 16 depth for the toms.
00:51These are Gretsch Renown toms with their signature 302 hoops and hardware, maple.
00:59Very very boomy, very in your face, which is what I need for Kane Hill.
01:04I've got to rip through James' guitar and Ryan's low end bass, so I need these toms
01:09to poke out in the mix as much as I can.
01:12The sizes are 12, 13, and 16.
01:17And then for my snare, it's something a little special.
01:21I have been working on this snare for probably about six months now.
01:26Still working on it, as you can see.
01:27It's a 1970 Gretsch chrome over brass.
01:32So she's been around for a minute, and if you want to take a look over here, she's got
01:37the original stop sign badge that is only made in the 70s.
01:42So it's a little piece of history that I'm smacking every night, and I'm really happy
01:46with the way it came together.
01:47So right now I'm using Evans drum heads.
01:51For the toms, I've got EC2 S's on top, with G1's on the bottom.
01:56And then for my snare, I have the heavyweight dry.
01:59I like the thickness of the snare because I'm a pretty heavy hitter, so I need something
02:03that's super durable and can last a couple of shows without falling through on me.
02:08The bottom side is a snare side 300, the thinnest they have, and I find that I get a lot more
02:14attack out of a thinner bottom head than their, I think it's a snare side 600.
02:20We're talking like millimeters here, but it's the same thing, you know, so.
02:23Kick drum, the kick drum I'm using a EMAD 2 on the batter side, with some AF patches,
02:29again, because I hit very hard.
02:31So I need to make sure they're nice and durable and they last a long time.
02:36And then the front reso is also an Evans reso kick drum head for the porthole.
02:42So I'm a Peisty Endorsed Artist.
02:43I've been with Peisty since 2018.
02:47My hi-hats are 15 inch.
02:49The top is a SoundEdge hi-hat.
02:52And then for the bottom, I have a Formula 602.
02:57My left crash is an 18 inch fast medium.
03:01And my ANR, my rep for Peisty, has gotten on to me recently about how hard I hit, and
03:08he recommended these because they're a little bit more durable, but they still get the wash
03:12that I need out of the cymbals.
03:16The splash is a 900 series 10 inch.
03:21And then over here, I've got a fast medium, again, 20 inch.
03:27A humongous 22 inch power ride.
03:30This is something that I get comments on all the time from everyone.
03:36It's never mic'd up in the venue because it's that loud.
03:39It doesn't matter if it's a little 300 cap or a 1000 cap.
03:42This thing will take your ears off, and it will never break.
03:47It's very durable, and I love it.
03:50I love it.
03:51So this is probably my favorite cymbal out of this setup.
03:54Over here, we have a little concoction that I made.
03:58This is a Peisty, I want to say 16 inch China signature series.
04:03And then underneath is a PST Swiss Crash.
04:08So I used those in conjunction with the felt in between to give it that nice stacked sound,
04:13almost like an auxiliary hi-hat sound.
04:17And then I got this beast over here, a Peisty Rude Series Novo China 20 inch.
04:22Again, very durable for what I need to do.
04:26Cuts through the mix.
04:28Very washy for more crashy parts, but I want a little bit of a trashier sound out of my
04:33crashes.
04:35And finally, I've got the Peisty PSTX Splashtack, and it's a 12 inch top with a 10 inch bottom.
04:44And I use this mostly for kind of little effects here and there, and then I also ride on it
04:49kind of like an auxiliary hi-hat on the song Drag Me Down.
04:52So for my kick pedals, I recently upgraded to DDW Machine Drive pedals, they're the chain
04:59version.
05:00I was having some problems with my legs after touring for about a decade, and I did some
05:05research and I found this Thomas Lang video, and they're kind of geared more towards less
05:12resistance and more feedback out of the pedal.
05:16So literally when you push down on it, it's sticking to your foot, it's not going anywhere.
05:22They're also very durable, very sexy looking.
05:25I love the graphite footboard with the holes drilled in it, it's just amazing to me.
05:32For the hardware, it's kind of a hodgepodge right now, mostly DW hardware with some random
05:38clamps for my splashes and my stacks and stuff like that.
05:43I've had this same Gibraltar hi-hat stand since 2013 and it's still going strong.
05:50Love that guy, it's been through a lot.
05:53Yeah, these over here actually, I recently just started doing this on this tour.
05:58So these are clear sonic cymbal shields, and what was going on was, I backline tech as
06:04well when I'm at home, and I've been noticing these a lot out on gigs, mainly with R&B artists,
06:11and our vocalist was complaining about the cymbals bleeding through his ears during the
06:17set, so I kind of took the R&B world and brought it over here with these, and ever since then
06:24not one complaint.
06:25Also helps out your front of house mix if you're playing a small 2, 4 and a cap room,
06:32the throw of the cymbals is not so much forward, it's kind of throwing upwards, so that way
06:38you can kind of get the overheads in and not say, well we're just not going to use the
06:41overhead mics tonight.
06:42My throne is a Rockin' Sock hydraulic.
06:46I love the hydraulic because I sit kind of high, and that's for posture and everything,
06:52but it has a little give to it, so once I sit down, there's a little bit of airiness
06:57and it's not so rigid on my back and stuff.
06:59A little bit of a combination.
07:02So I've got these new Active Grip Rebound 5Bs from Promark, and they're coated with
07:08this coating that once you start to sweat, it almost gets kind of tacky.
07:13So when I'm out here hitting, I tend to lose control of my sticks a lot, and I've
07:22found that these guys have been helping me out a lot recently on these past few tours.
07:27I also really like the Fire Grain sticks, super durable, they use this process where
07:33they heat treat the wood, so it kind of combines everything together and gets it nice and tight.
07:40So I also did something special for this round.
07:44We put a Kelly shoe inside my floor tom, and that has an Audix D6 in it.
07:51We've had some problems with this tree setup bleeding into this microphone, so Kelly Shoes
07:58sent me out a system to where I can put it inside the drum, and it almost acts like these
08:03cymbal shields where it cuts out the bleed completely from the floor tom and really isolates
08:10the signal source so our front of the house can get the nice clean signal source out front.
08:16I'm also rocking a Kelly Shoe inside the kick drum, and what I do with that is a lot
08:22of people mount it facing upwards, and I've found over the years that you get a lot of
08:27reflection from the shells and the cymbals, even though there is wood in between the microphone
08:34and everything else.
08:38So I flip it upside down, and I also put a little bit of studio foam laying on the bottom
08:43of the kick drum, so it completely deadens the sound, it completely isolates it, man
08:50it sounds like a cannon every night, and I love it.
08:54So I'm also using RockLox, it's my buddy Anthony Gazelle's company, I have them all around
08:59my kit, mostly on the top of the drums, and then for my snare I have it on the bottom
09:05where I do rim shots, man these things don't move, they keep your drums in tune beautifully.
09:11I've had problems in the past with other ones where they kind of fly off wherever, if you're
09:15packing up, and they just kind of go wherever, and these things, they're sturdy man, you
09:20can move your whole drum, and they're not going anywhere.
09:24So shout out to RockLox for hooking me up with these, they've been saving my butt and
09:28my time, not tuning so much.
09:31Again, thanks for checking out my gear today, what I play on a day to day basis, my name's
09:35Devin, I play drums in Cane Hill, we have a record coming out November 1st, it's called
09:40A Piece of Me I'd Never Let You Find, with Out of Line Records, I hope you enjoy it.
