00:00Nightly greetings one and all, William Theo here, homegrown and happy to bring you PTV
00:06News Now.
00:07And we kick off tonight's stories with Disaster Risk Reduction is a familiar tune Filipinos
00:13can adapt to better moats than the countries on the planet can.
00:17And the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction was all praises for what he's
00:23apparently seen as the country's people-centric approach in seeking to mitigate risks from
00:29disasters or calamities way before they hit.
00:33UN DRR Chief Kamal Kishore said the Philippines is way ahead of the DRR curve with focus on
00:41communities as a core or essential step towards mitigating and or managing risks.
00:47On top of the well-conceived policies and programs for mitigating and managing disaster
00:52risks, Kishore underscored the close cooperation between government agencies that ensure efficacy
00:59and efficiency that is definitely worth emulating.
01:03For her part, DENR Secretary Maria Antonio Yulo-Loyzaga, engaging the participation and
01:10participation of the academe has been the key in making things work and helping assure
01:16continuity in the transition from one administration to the next.
01:23The constant stream of news misinformation outright lies in fear-mongering especially
01:28by the former President Donald Trump and his minions in the mega-GOP has taken its
01:35toll on many, especially immigrants and those who manage and administer the votes.
01:40And America's group of shrinks has a term for it, Election Stress Disorder.
01:45And BOA's Maxim Adams has the full story.
01:51The November 5th presidential election causing anxiety for nearly three quarters of those
01:56surveyed in an American Psychiatric Association poll.
02:01Some psychologists are branding this phenomenon Election Stress Disorder.
02:06The political climate and discussions about the election had become a lot more heated
02:11and a lot more divisive and we wondered if that was having an impact on individuals.
02:16And certainly their self-reported experience of it was that indeed that has been a significant
02:22source of stress for many individuals and other research has also found similar kinds
02:27of results.
02:30Political stress affects many aspects of life, says University of Nebraska-Lincoln political
02:35science professor Kevin Smith.
02:38A fifth to a quarter of American reports ruptured social relationships, you know, maybe even
02:45problems at work because of politics.
02:49Smith's research shows that young people as well as those with left-leaning views and
02:55those more involved in politics are more prone to election stress.
03:00We know how to mitigate the health effects.
03:04It's just stop paying attention to politics, just tune out.
03:08The problem with that is that might be good for individual health, but it's not particularly
03:13good for civic health.
03:16Stress management specialist Dr. Kiran Dintyala, known as Dr. Kam, recently published a book
03:22called The Mantra of Peaceful Politics, where he shares his advice of how to avoid excessive
03:29stress during the pre-election period.
03:32Elections come and go.
03:35Politicians come and go.
03:38It might change their future, maybe 10 percent, 20 percent, maybe 30 percent, but for most
03:44part, their future, their happiness depends on what they do every single day in their
03:51life, their behavior, their emotion.
03:54But Bufka says there is a way out of the psychological malaise.
03:58She says it is all about exerting control over where you get your information and also
04:04about doing something, anything, instead of doomscrolling political stories.
04:10Simply exposing ourselves to negative information, negative images, negative rhetoric is going
04:16to elevate our overall sense of negativity and stress.
04:19So we have some control there.
04:22Another thing that we encourage people to think about is engaging in meaningful activities,
04:27whether it's related to the election or to current societal issues or problems that are
04:33important to you.
04:34APA stresses that it's important to remain calm and maintain social relationships, as
04:40spending time with loved ones, an active lifestyle, and healthy eating and sleeping can all help
04:46reduce anxiety in the days before the election.
04:50Maxim Adams, VOA News, Washington.

05:57Sub-projects worth P21.30 million will be implemented by the PRDP in 2014.
