Another week with spells of rain and brisk winds lies ahead. We will see a significant rise in temperature during the first part of the week, but then it turns colder again with rain turning to snow on hills. Alex Deakin explains.

00:00Hello. Welcome to your weather for the week ahead from the Met Office.
00:03It's more of the same throughout this week, which means changeable is perhaps the polite way of putting it.
00:10Yes, we will see further spells of rain, nothing especially heavy or long-lived,
00:15but any rain falling because the ground is so very wet could cause some further issues.
00:20And there are warnings in force, particularly for Monday night and Tuesday morning's rain,
00:25that is also bringing some milder air, really quite high temperatures for a time on Tuesday
00:30before things then turn colder again later this week.
00:34Yes, it's low pressure dominating.
00:36This little ripple in this weather front, though, has some warmer air tucked into it.
00:41That is why it is turning milder overnight Monday and into Tuesday,
00:45warmer air pushing across most of the country.
00:47But although it will be milder, this weather front will be providing a fair bit of rain.
00:52As I said, there are warnings in force, including an amber warning through parts of central Wales.
00:57Could see 100 millimetres of rain here.
00:59Yellow warnings in force across other parts of Wales and north-west England.
01:03As I said, extra rain falling after what was an exceptionally wet February
01:07could cause some further flooding problems.
01:09It's not wet everywhere, though, on Tuesday.
01:11In fact, for many, the afternoon looking reasonably bright with some sunshine.
01:15Always keep a lot of cloud on the south coast, a gusty wind here and some patchy rain.
01:19Plenty of showers coming into Scotland and Northern Ireland.
01:23Here, temperatures, well, some will stay in single figures,
01:26but even that's quite a bit milder than it has been recently.
01:29And look at these numbers across England and Wales, particularly to the east.
01:33Well, if we see some sunshine, we could easily get into the mid-teens in a few places.
01:38So really quite mild on Tuesday.
01:41Then as we look towards Wednesday, it's still low pressure systems, still a lot of weather front,
01:45still a lot of isobars on the chart as well.
01:47That means it's often going to be breezy.
01:49And these two weather fronts will be bringing some outbreaks of rain.
01:52This one looks like clearing away to the south,
01:54although it may linger across the Channel Isles for a time in the southeast in the morning.
01:59The one further north will be pushing its way very slowly southwards,
02:03but basically a lot of cloud, outbreaks of rain, some snow over the mountains in Scotland.
02:07And by the end of the day, some of that snow could be getting down to relatively low levels.
02:12But much of the south and east of England looking dry for a good part of Wednesday.
02:17Still breezy, still quite mild here as well, but it is turning colder further north.
02:22And we need to watch that weather front as it moves in across the country on Wednesday night.
02:26It might actually develop into an area of low pressure.
02:30So some uncertainty about the exact position of that weather front, but it is a cold front.
02:34So it's certainly going to introduce colder air once more.
02:38And the combination of that colder air with some wet weather on the weather front could provide some problems with snow,
02:44mostly over hills, but perhaps lower levels for a time.
02:47And it could also therefore be a bit icy on Thursday morning.
02:51That weather system, though, scoots out of the way.
02:53It's drier for a time, but then another weather system follows on behind,
02:56bringing more cloud and rain and hill snow to parts of Scotland,
02:59northern England and just generally turning fairly soggy again across England and Wales.
03:05Still at this stage, fairly mild across the south,
03:08but notice temperatures starting to fall certainly further north.
03:11And those northerly winds picking up as well on Thursday across the far north of Scotland.
03:16Let's take a look at the bigger chart as we go into Thursday night and Friday.
03:19Follow the ice bars all the way up to Greenland there.
03:23It is cold air that tries to push south on Thursday morning and into Friday with a brisk wind as well.
03:29It does kind of get pushed away, so it doesn't last all that long.
03:33But nevertheless, quite a cold start across Scotland down the eastern side of England.
03:38Feeling pretty chilly on those North Sea coasts with some showers.
03:41But actually, Friday, a little ridge of high pressure,
03:45something a bit drier for large parts of the country.
03:48But then notice behind me, yes, more winds, further outbreaks of rain,
03:52another weather system then edging in from the Atlantic.
03:56So as we go into the weekend, we're almost back to square one with weather coming in from the Atlantic.
04:02It means temperatures start to rise again, but it does mean further cloud and outbreaks of rain.
04:06So after a chilly start, yes, further spurs of rain are likely.
04:10There are signs that beyond the weekend into the following week,
04:14it might start to turn at least a little bit drier.
04:17But that's a long, long way off.
