00:00Welcome to your national weather update.
00:02Plenty going on.
00:03Weather warnings in place, including an amber warning.
00:07More on that in just a moment.
00:08First of all, let's take a look at the bigger picture.
00:10Much of the UK smothered in cloud, an area of low pressure
00:14that brought some heavy rain across the southeast
00:16through the night.
00:17That low is now just meandering up the eastern side.
00:21It will make for a pretty wet, windy, grim day
00:24across a good chunk of eastern England, the Midlands,
00:26and increasingly across eastern Scotland.
00:28We have yellow warnings in place
00:30through the rest of Thursday.
00:32Strong winds off the North Sea bringing
00:34in heavy and persistent rain that certainly
00:37will make for some pretty grim conditions on the roads,
00:39but could also cause some local flooding
00:41and certainly will suppress the temperatures
00:43under that wet weather, 8, 9 degrees in some places.
00:47Brighter skies further south, maybe one or two showers
00:50for South Wales and southwest England,
00:51but a bit of sunshine here.
00:52Could see highs of 13 degrees.
00:54But as I said, feeling a lot colder than that for most.
00:57Brightening up a little bit this afternoon,
00:58across the west of Northern Ireland
01:00after a foggy start here.
01:02But further east, the rain will continue to feed in
01:05and continue to cause some problems.
01:07Warning extending into eastern Scotland.
01:10And actually here through the night,
01:11we have an amber warning in place.
01:13Temperatures will hold up with that cloud and rain
01:15and strong winds.
01:16Some clearer skies in the south.
01:18Could see temperatures drop out well down into single figures.
01:21But let's focus in on this rain.
01:22As I said, we have an amber warning in place.
01:24Comes into force at midnight across parts
01:26of eastern Scotland.
01:29South Aberdeenshire and Angus in particular
01:31seeing 50 to maybe 100 millimetres of rain.
01:34Perhaps on the hills upwards of 150 millimetres of rain
01:38over the next 36 hours or so.
01:39That is likely to cause some problems.
01:42Flooding to homes and businesses.
01:44Some fast flowing rivers as well,
01:46making things particularly dangerous.
01:48So that's why we have this amber warning in place.
01:50You can see the winds just feeding in the moisture
01:52from the North Sea.
01:53Hence why this zone in particular
01:55is likely to see intense rainfall
01:58over a number of hours.
01:59Now, during Friday, that rain may actually start to ease.
02:04But with the water still to come down off the mountains,
02:07there's still a potential for disruption for much of Friday.
02:12The rain will be easing during Friday.
02:13Also, of course, northern England.
02:14Still a few showers, particularly
02:16to the west of the Pennines.
02:17But returning drier across northeast England,
02:19certainly compared to today.
02:21And again, further south, many places dry and bright.
02:23Some sunny spells for Wales and southern England.
02:26Just a few showers for West Wales and the far southwest.
02:29But particularly windy in the northeast,
02:31and increasingly for Northern Ireland
02:32and western parts of Scotland.
02:34The wind's swirling around low pressure
02:36and under the cloud with the wind again.
02:38Temperatures 9, 10 at best further south,
02:41while 12, 13 possibly with a bit of sunshine.
02:45Wet and windy weather continues to just meander
02:47its way across northern Scotland during the course of Friday
02:51evening.
02:51We'll continue to feed some showers into northwest England
02:54and perhaps parts of north and west Wales.
02:57That's an area of low pressure that just, as I said,
02:59meanders slowly northwards over the next couple of days.
03:02But behind that, little bump, little ridge of high pressure.
03:06That'll bring many places a chilly start to Saturday,
03:09but generally a fine day until this set of weather fronts
03:12brings more wet and windy weather,
03:13mostly during Saturday night, but staying pretty
03:17showery into Sunday.
03:18So as I said, plenty going on.
03:20For many, Saturday looks like being a fine, bright day
03:23after a chilly start with lots of showers returning
03:25through Saturday night and for Sunday.
03:27Please do keep up to date.
