00:00My mom said you did bad things. She's right. I
00:11Always knew I wanted to do a Sophia centric episode. I've used Sophia as the closest thing
00:16We have to a hero on our show. She's also not she's complicated. So to unpack her it felt right to see her origin
00:24To meet this woman and take her back through this journey to her original trauma
00:30Mom and then to crack that and open it and open it and open it until you get down to the heart and we find
00:37A deep understanding for who she has become and what she will then do
00:44I wanted to start with light in Gotham so that we see this world of innocence in Sophia's perception
00:54I know that there is an explanation
00:56confused
00:57sick as
00:59Sophia's world starts to fall apart
01:01We wanted to drive a very strong contrast between that world that we had created before and the world that she is now entering
01:13The camera becomes much more handheld
01:15Most of the scenes are taken from her point of view and we go with that until she's in the cell
01:24Arkham Asylum, we are very much informed by the Batman
01:27we keep this octagonal design and these really small cells and we use that to recreate the mind of
01:36Sophia and how closed in she is in there how isolated she feels in there
01:40You get the sense that she doesn't know where she's going. She doesn't know what's going to happen to her next
01:47Once she starts getting electroshock therapy
01:51It needed to be a visual journey that is both
01:55Emotional and moves us through time and develops into something
02:00It was important for us to see a digression in
02:03Sophia's state through using distortion in the lensing to create a distorted view of what she was experiencing
02:10Every time there's a shock we find her coming to
02:14And when she comes to she finds another piece of the wall of her parents bedroom
02:20We wanted to make the scenes feel repetitious
02:23But then also only utilizing certain angles once or twice so that you would feel in that state unstable
02:32In the mess hall we wanted to create a sense of dread in the tongues by the bleakness of it
02:39When
02:41My background players all arrived I
02:44Empowered them with the truth, which is that they are the ones who make the world real if the people in that environment
02:52Aren't truly in the environment. It won't happen every time
02:56They would bring me through the crowd of women every single person was so invested in who they were
03:01I mean, I was like still getting chills thinking about it
03:03It didn't feel like we were making a TV show and those scenes really show what it brings out in people when you hurt them
03:13We decided to keep the camera quite still up until when she attacks magpie
03:20We chose to stay on Sophia to connect her to the violence
03:25I
03:28Told you
03:31For this scene where Sophia wakes up in dr
03:34Rush's office Helen and I wanted to have it feel as if everything was a dream
03:40So now everything is accumulated and she knows that every member of her family betrayed her not just her father. She's being
03:48Reborn at that moment. We washed everything off of her face any
03:53Artifice would have minimized the starkness the newness and strength and the realization of
04:00The truth of her life up until that moment for ten years
04:06Men have lied
04:08To me. She goes through all these different levels of like all these different personas excellent daughter
04:15overachiever and this horrific feral state in Arkham and it's not until the
04:21Yellow dress that she finds the one that fits
04:24Sophia is almost like dissecting her trauma and real-time in front of the audience
04:29And so the clothes sort of reflect that so she does dress for each occasion that she's in she has a lot of awareness
04:36so the yellow dress
04:37became very important that she
04:40Present herself showing all of herself and she makes her entrance to say her truth to these people
04:48She starts coming into her own as an adult woman, we try to tell the story with hairstyling
04:53It's not supposed to read. Oh, she went and styled her hair differently today. It's supposed to read
05:00Her energy is feeling this and we can tell by her hair
05:04Makeup became a war paint statement when you really look at it
05:08You're like, it's almost like she's wearing a mask and that's what you want the audience to see
05:12I don't fit into this family anymore. So tomorrow I'm starting a new life
05:16So Sophia without fully realizing it
05:19Wants power in part because she wants to fulfill something that she never was able to achieve
05:24Because she was thrown into Arkham how like sharks can't stop moving or they sink. It's that relentless pursuit of justice
