00:00Not only do we have money, we also have food in the trash.

00:05That's what a program that started in Tondo, Manila, is trying to do.

00:10Where the waste that can be used for other purposes can be replaced with vegetables or rice.

00:17Sandra Aguinaldo has the story.

00:22The plastic bottles that each of us consumes,

00:26we have a big problem if we just throw it away.

00:30According to the World Bank,

00:32the Philippines pollutes 2.7 million tons of plastic waste annually.

00:37And 20% of it is wasted in the ocean.

00:41That's why in Smoky Mountains in Tondo, Manila,

00:44the Eco-Eco Center was launched.

00:46Where the trash can be recycled,

00:49such as plastic containers,

00:51broken bottles,

00:52cans,

00:53paper,

00:54scrap metal,

00:55and even money and food.

00:58It was organized by actress Antoinette Toss

01:01and her group, Communities Organized for Resource Allocation or CORA.

01:06We always talk about pollution in the Philippines.

01:09We want to show that the Philippines is also a place of solutions.

01:14Simple cleaning,

01:16you can bring it here for e-cash,

01:19you can get points,

01:21you can also get rice, vegetables, and more.

01:24Residents of Smoky Mountains also guard the Eco-Eco Center

01:28next to Barangay Hall.

01:30They make sure that the recyclables are clean and dry,

01:33such as bubble wrap,

01:35which is used to wrap parcels that were bought online.

01:38It should be clean and not wet.

01:41And it's important to remove the tapes first

01:45because it can damage the machine.

01:48They will weigh these

01:50and there are equal points per kilo.

01:53Our clear PET bottles are worth P21 per kilo.

01:57But if you bring something like aluminum,

02:00it's worth P50 per kilo.

02:03It can be collected and exchanged for rice, vegetables, cash, and more.

02:28The Eco-Eco Center is supported by

02:34and the Korea International Cooperation Agency.

02:41We have local communities to be supportive of and included in.

02:45This is why this project is destined for more success

02:49because there's so much interest and buy-in in the local community.

02:52KORA plans to build another center like this.

02:55It can also be modeled by local governments in their respective areas.
