00:00Alright, good morning, welcome to another episode of BMW Build, Jekyll, and Hyde on
00:16Throttle House.
00:17Now, what happened last night was I was driving the truck to go pick up the 330 motor, and
00:25uh, yeah, I spun off the road, because it was icy.
00:29I did two 360s, actually as soon as the rear snapped, I removed all the weight from the
00:34back of the car so that I could fit the engine in there, we had sandbags and stuff in it,
00:39but what ended up happening was there was black ice all over the road, and I was going
00:45up a slight, kind of like a slight incline, but I was pretty much straight, lit up the
00:49rear tires, the car went sideways, and I went, Jesus, take the wheel.
00:52I had absolutely no chance whatsoever, so I did two 360s and slammed into the ditch,
00:57and I completely de-beated the tire.
01:00Now, this would just be not a big deal at all, I wouldn't have vlogged about it, but
01:03this is literally what happens to me every time.
01:06Everything's going fine, and then everything happens all at once.
01:10I broke the lug, where is it, here, I broke the key.
01:14Don't use these, they're stupid.
01:17So now I can't get the last bolt off, so now I can't get the tire off to take it to
01:22a shop, so now I can't get the engine.
01:25Yeah, yeah, this episode's going well so far.
01:30Okay, I got the wheel off.
01:33The ticket to doing this is that you get one of these types of sockets, okay, with the
01:40little ridges on it like that, I happen to have some in a kit, and then you hammer it
01:44aggressively onto the lock nut, and that's probably never coming out, and even if it
01:48is, the socket's probably shot, but you lose the socket, but I got this thing off, so now
01:54I can take this tire in.
01:56I don't think I damaged anything, actually, in the crash, I spun off the road, and I got
02:01really, really lucky.
02:02There was a very small ditch, and then a grassy wall, and I just spun into, come around here,
02:10I mowed the lawn with the front a little bit, right, and then the front impacted, and then
02:17it whipped the back around, and the back tire hit the wall, and it just de-beaded the tire.
02:22The tire doesn't look damaged or anything, but I don't think the rim is bent, we'll find
02:28out when we take it in, but I need this truck to pick up engine parts, so it needs to work.
02:34Oh, also, if you have a Nissan Titan, I don't know about you, but the spare tire does not
02:41come down.
02:43This is a 2008, and there's like this pulley system, you crank it, and the tire lowers
02:48on a chain, like a three-to-one pulley chain, but it was completely rusted, and the thing
02:53that holds the wheel underneath was seized to the hub, so I spent in the middle of the
02:57night, last night, 1 a.m., three hours hammering and banging on my back on the side of the
03:02road in the middle of nowhere, until I finally gave up, and I called CAA, and CAA came, and
03:07they tried to get it off, and they couldn't, so then I called CAA a second time, and they
03:11came with a tow truck and towed me here, so that I could just jack up the tire and take
03:15this one in.
03:16So, this is all a massive waste of time, and it has absolutely nothing to do with BMW-billed
03:20Jekyll and Hyde on Throttle House.
03:26Okay, round two of picking up a 330 motor.
03:32Don't crash the car, don't crash the car, don't crash the car.
03:36Alright, just picked up the M54, it's from an E39 5 Series, so the wiring harness is
03:45different, and a lot of things are different, and it's really dirty.
03:48This is going to be more work than I thought, as it always is.
03:53Start the wind noise.
03:56I'm going to strap this down as best I can.
04:05Alright, I don't think that's going anywhere.
04:09Nope.
04:15This engine's going to need a lot of work, I think, really, no matter how I slice this,
04:21because, yeah, it's kind of dirty.
04:32Okay, let's roll to the truck yard.
04:41It's a very random place to pick up an engine.
04:44Honestly, I just handed that guy $430.
04:48I have no idea.
04:49Well, he did a compression test and he showed me the images, and he has a video of it running,
04:54and he has proof that it's an M54B30, so I mean, that's better than nothing, isn't it?
05:00Alright, I got the engine safely back here so that I can put it in the time attack car,
05:07Dr. Jekyll.
05:08This is a 330 from an E39, so it's a little bit different here and there, the wiring harness
05:15is different, and this one's in actually pretty rough shape, I'll be honest.
05:18There's a lot of oil leaks, so I'm pretty much just going to strip the engine down,
05:22as far as I have time to do, and redo oil filter housing gasket, valve cover gasket.
05:31I'm going to put my wiring harness on it from the 325, so it made sense.
05:35It was still MS43, so I don't have to do any fancy stuff, just swap the wiring harnesses over.
05:41I'm going to put new spark plugs in it.
05:43I'm going to put all of my ignition coils in it from other ones, I know they work.
05:49Yeah, we're going to see if this thing holds up.
05:50Right now I'm just going to get it out of the truck, this is my plan here.
05:53I'm just going to hoist it up, and I'm going to drive the truck away.
06:04Actually, I decided while it's up in the air, I'm going to take the wiring harness off it right now,
06:09just because it's so easy to see, and I can show you where all the stuff is you have to take off.
06:13This guy's intake boot was completely cracked around here.
06:16This is where you get a lot of vacuum leaks, because this gets hard, and this thing is rock hard.
06:21Right, you have to replace these every once in a while.
06:31Okay, way to undo all these connectors, the easy way.
06:35Almost all of them are like this, a little wire where you push, a little small screwdriver,
06:40and just pry gently, and they pop right off, like so.
06:49There we go.
07:04Okay.
07:22I'm going to take the valve cover off.
07:23I'm kind of worried that this engine is going to have a lot of sludge.
07:29I just have that feeling based on the rest of what it looks like.
07:32I don't even want to see under here, but I've got to change the valve cover gasket anyway.
07:38Okay, let's do it.
07:48All right, moment of truth, ladies and gentlemen.
07:50What do the camshafts look like?
07:53What do the camshafts look like?
08:00Oh, it's not that bad.
08:04I've seen worse.
08:07Look at that gasket.
08:09Oh, look at that.
08:12Oh, man, I can't even get it off.
08:15Good design, BMW, good design.
08:19Listen, I see a bit of burning on the tops of the pistons.
08:27We're going to put these in.
08:31Be careful installing spark plugs.
08:32You really, really don't want to cross thread.
08:48All right, so we're going to remove the vanos because I have an extra vanos unit that I can use.
09:00This is kind of gunned up, and I don't know.
09:04I haven't driven this car, so I have no idea if this vanos is any good.
09:06But I am going to remove it anyway because I have one that I know is good for sure.
09:15These actually have quite a bit of torque on them.
09:19There we go.
09:26Put this on the list of things you don't want to ever strip.
09:35Yep, like that, like that.
09:40These are reverse threaded.
09:49Pressure.
09:52And they're only like a couple of foot pounds.
09:59And this came off nicely.
10:05All right, this is a rebuilt vanos unit with new seals from Bison, Bezion, Bizeon Systems, whatever that's called.
10:18The seals were really good when I put them in last time, and this improved the lower end of my previous car.
10:22So we're going to put it in this one.
10:29Okay, so I wasn't recording because I'm foolish.
10:32When I put in the little guys in there, eight newton meters, the ones that are reverse threaded.
10:38These guys, 37 foot pounds, and the vanos unit is back in the car.
10:42Let's do the valve cover now.
10:45And the top end part here is done.
10:47I've got a block off plate for my secondary air pump.
10:50AC is going to be gone.
10:52I removed the water pump.
10:54Going to put another one in there.
10:56I'm going to remove the oil filter housing and put a new tensioner on.
10:59Oil filter housing gasket is going on.
11:01And then this is pretty much...
11:03Oh, I'm going to remove this so I can put my catch can install that I've got in and check the diesel valve.
11:09I'm going to do the oil pan and the engine mounts.
11:12Pretty much the only thing left on this thing is going to be the block and the head.
11:16That's good, I guess.
11:20I'm going to put a little bit of RTV sealant on a few key areas.
11:26Namely...
11:34Right here and here.
11:43At least I have a little purse.
11:58These are only 7 foot pounds, so don't hit them with the impact gun.
12:01I'm just using this to screw them in really quick.
12:12Alright, that's all we're going to do for the engine today.
12:29Next video on the engine, I think, will probably be a Tom Parkin oil pump upgrade.
12:34I have to swap the oil pans between the two engines.
12:37But everything else on the engine is done-ish, kind of.
12:41I'm still waiting on a couple parts here and there, but it's boring stuff.
12:44And then that engine is ready to go back in Dr. Jekyll.
12:48But anyway, that is all for now.
12:50Subscribe and turn on notifications so that you don't miss any of Project BMW, Jekyll & Hyde.
12:55I've got so much stuff coming at you.
12:57We haven't even started driving these cars yet, and already it's exciting.
13:00People are following along.
13:02I'm doing all the cool stuff to these cars, so make sure you tune in and don't miss a video.
