How To Remove an E46 BMW Engine, (And how to break a transmission) Ep. 4

00:00On this episode of project BMW Jekyll and Hyde we go through the frustrating
00:10process of pulling the engine from Mr. Hyde the time attack car and I make a
00:14boo-boo on the transmission.
00:23Alright so we've got most of the engine off and ready to go right now we're just
00:29doing the last few things we disconnected the fuel line we have to
00:33we're gonna leave the wiring harness on the car and remove it right from the
00:37ECU and then just pull everything at once. Disconnected the driveshaft
00:40disconnected the shift linkage I forgot to do that last time and actually pulled
00:43the shift linkage right from the underside of the car. This is almost
00:47ready to pull out and then we'll drop the subframe after and this is gonna be
00:49a bare car that we can work with. Andrew's doing the last few things right now.
00:54Oh yeah here's a top tip here if you have a washer bottle that's leaking
00:59that's an earplug you squeeze it stick it in BAM right that's some high-tech
01:07stuff. Okay so here is what happens when you put too many minds to a simple task
01:11you were looking at several engineers a scientist a robotics specialist in like
01:1620 years combined university education and it took us about 15 minutes to
01:20figure out how to make sense of the chains to hoist the engine.
01:50That's a tip for you guys the steering rack gets in the way completely when
02:10you're pulling the engine just don't you have to take the steering rack out
02:13just undo the two bolts that hold it to the actual subframe and then just push
02:19it out of the way and then you can just get enough clearance to pull the the oil
02:25pan over it otherwise you'll just run into big oil pans not like a square it's
02:30a weird angle when you're lifting the engine so it that's what gets in the way
02:33is the oil pan.
02:36Jack up a little bit more.
02:49Okay let's take the secondary air pump off.
02:56Is that a 10? It looks like a 10.
02:59So pretty much everywhere I go everyone from like Toronto area knows
03:06about Admiral's. Yeah yeah the junk pile Admiral's. That place is dirty. You eat like
03:15you eat anything there after like the the time of like 8 p.m. and you'll wake
03:21up in the middle of the night just dying for a glass of water. It's so salty.
03:27With way too many of us in the garage we began to pull the engine. It's important
03:32that if your car is on jack stands you pay attention that you don't lift the
03:35car up off the jack stands in the front as you start to jack up the engine. From
03:39there it's just a matter of moving it a little bit at a time. You might need to
03:42disconnect the hood struts to get more vertical clearance.
03:48It's at this point you will probably realize that you didn't actually detach
03:52everything from the motor so take your time. Having one of those load levelers
03:55ended up being one of the better investments I've ever made.
03:59Get a rod. No he's right yeah. Oh one popped out. Keep going.
04:01Yeah.
04:07Leveler's handy.
04:10Yeah I don't know what we would do without it.
04:14I don't think I'll ever pull an engine again with one of these.
04:16We're good.
04:18Flathead?

04:22Imagine if your gear hose started leaking.
04:24It would be easy to jump in.
04:26Well we gotta pull it in.
04:28So if your gear hose is leaking these days.
04:30There we go.
04:32We're good.
04:34Alright.
04:36All the way out.
04:38Let's jack it up though.
04:40We got lots of ceiling clearance right?
04:42Let's get some more height on it.
04:44There we go.
04:46Yeah you're good.
04:48You're good.
04:50You can always go higher.
04:52Pull her up.
04:54Yeah pull her up.
04:58Oh.
05:00Yeah flatten it out too.
05:02Good luck with that.
05:04Break a weld.

05:14As much height as you can possibly get out of it please.

05:18Back up.

05:32Okay we can actually just pivot this out of the way.
05:36Oh wait we can't because of that stupid thing.
05:38I don't think those tires pivot in the front.
05:40No they don't.
05:42I'm gonna slide it out.
05:44That's sketchy.
05:46An engine hanging over your head.
05:48You can move straight in.
05:50That's weird.
05:52I think you're meant to move that in.
05:54Yeah.
05:56It's probably meant to have room to actually go out and turn around too.
05:58Not a ton of room in here.
06:00Not a ton of room in here either.
06:02Or I mean...
06:04Alright.
06:06The engine's out.
06:16I've removed a couple of these transmissions now
06:18and what often happens is that the little guide pin seizes
06:20and you can't get the transmission
06:22to separate from the engine block.
06:24This particular one was no different.
06:36Eventually I got fed up
06:38so I resorted to violence.
06:40Now I've made some dumb decisions
06:42in my life but this next bit
06:44is right near the top.
06:48Now I know what you're thinking.
06:50Don't hit the aluminum transmission casing
06:52with a rubber mallet.
06:54Well see I was aiming for this little part right here
06:56which should be stronger.
06:58Yeah. I missed.

07:06Oh no way!

07:10Now I know.
07:12Oh you can see the gears in there.

08:58So here's the 325 engine.
09:00I'm just gonna sell this. I don't need it.
09:02Or anything on it really.
09:04I have so much work to do.
09:06This is ridiculous.
09:08So here's the update.
09:10Currently Mr. Hyde
09:12had a lot of body work done to it
09:14and it needs a lot more body work
09:16done to it. Engine is in there.
09:18That's all hooked up and good to go.
09:20I'm gonna put the Condor Speedshop
09:22engine mounts and transmission mounts
09:24in that and Dr. Jekyll
09:26the Time Attack car
09:28is going to get a 330 motor.
09:30I'm gonna do the subframe
09:32and I'm just going over all the stuff
09:34in my head that I have to do
09:36and it's just like
09:38you start these projects like
09:40oh I'll just swap an engine
09:42and then you remember how much work
09:44it actually is to do all this.
09:46So I'm gonna delete the air conditioning.
09:48I'm gonna put a coupler in there.
09:50I think I might actually delete the power steering completely
09:52and do a Condor Speedshop
09:54power steering delete.
09:56So I'm gonna have no power steering in this one.
09:58And then I
10:00subframe and clean everything up.
10:02I got a wonky wiper that I have to fix on that one.
10:04And then
10:06yeah I'm tired.
