00:00Sometimes, the view can go askew.
00:03On rare occasions, the hosts of the popular daytime talk show have had to chastise their
00:08own audience for getting out of line, and it's gotten pretty awkward.
00:13When Senator Ted Cruz appeared on The View in October 2022, things didn't quite go as
00:18planned.
00:19As the women on the panel conducted the live interview, protesters interrupted the show
00:22and could be heard shouting on air.
00:24These climate change activists wanted to confront the senator about his position on climate
00:29change.
00:30One cause only.
00:31Cover climate now!
00:32Cover climate now!
00:33Cover climate now!
00:35They added,
00:36"...ABC needs to cover climate change more, instead of platforming a climate denier like
00:40Ted Cruz."
00:41As security attempted to quietly remove the protesters from the studio audience, panel
00:46moderator Whoopi Goldberg had a message for them.
00:49Excuse us!
00:50Let us do our job!
00:51Let us do our job!
00:53We hear what you have to say, but you gotta go!
00:56The audience erupted in applause as Goldberg shut them down.
00:59The protesters, who are a part of New York Communities for Change, responded to Goldberg's
01:03comments on Twitter.
01:05The group tweeted their videos from the protest and wrote, in part,
01:08"...Whoopi said let us do our job, but your network is failing to do its job."
01:13Cruz reacted to the moment on Fox News and called the protesters climate change radicals.
01:19It was a bit of a circus.
01:20But the reason I went on The View is, I think it's important that conservatives reach much
01:24more broadly than just preaching to the choir.
01:27During live episodes, host Meghan McCain tended to grow frustrated with the audience.
01:32Instead of ignoring reactions opposing her views, the co-host would directly call them
01:36out.
01:37During an episode in 2018, McCain berated the audience for clapping as co-host Sonny
01:42Hostin criticized former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly.
01:46Hostin expressed being disappointed in Kelly for associating himself with then-President
01:50Donald Trump, and even argued that he'd tarnished his legacy by working with the former president.
01:55As the audience broke out into applause, McCain took offense.
01:59"...I just think it's weird to be clapping.
02:01Whatever you think about his politics, he lost his son in combat for freedom."
02:05Kelly's son Robert was killed while on patrol in Afghanistan in 2010.
02:09McCain herself comes from a military family.
02:12Her father, former Senator John McCain, was famously a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
02:17As Joy Behar attempted to explain that the audience can choose to clap if they want,
02:21McCain again expressed her discomfort, saying,
02:24"...Everyone can do whatever they want.
02:26I'm saying, for me, it makes me uncomfortable."
02:29When Meghan McCain joined The View in 2017, she took the difficult job of being the only
02:34Republican voice on the show during the Trump administration.
02:37It wasn't long before she realized how challenging the job would be.
02:41McCain sometimes struggled to get her viewpoint across to an audience skeptical about her
02:45politics.
02:46In a 2019 interview with ET, McCain addressed the constant boos from the audience and discussed
02:52feeling singled out.
02:53She said,
02:54"...It's like, lots of intense emotions on this show, and part of it is the political
02:58climate we're in, and part of it's just the nature of the show.
03:01Getting booed is very hard."
03:03McCain was never shy about her frustration on-air.
03:06During multiple segments, the co-hosts directly confronted the audience for their booing.
03:10When discussing the Democratic Party calling for Donald Trump's impeachment in 2019, McCain
03:15seemed bothered by the audience interrupting her.
03:18As Sunny Hostin cheered for impeachment and was met with applause, McCain clashed with
03:22the audience.
03:23"...Okay, let me finish.
03:24Let me finish.
03:25Thank you."
03:26When the audience later booed her, she rolled her eyes and chastised the crowd once again.
03:31During another heated debate, McCain responded to the boos by saying,
03:35"...I'm used to the audience booing me, and then it's fine."
03:39Donald Trump Jr.'s appearance on The View was filled with drama on-screen and behind
03:43the scenes.
03:44As the interview kicked off with the co-hosts grilling him about his father's administration,
03:48Trump responded with jabs about a Halloween costume that Joy Behar wore when she was 29,
03:53which many commentators have called blackface.
03:56Later, Whoopi Goldberg and Trump clashed.
03:59According to a Hollywood Reporter writer who attended the taping, a frustrated Goldberg
04:03scolded the audience during a commercial break for being too loud and interfering with the
04:07interview.
04:08She reportedly said,
04:09"...The booing is f----- us up.
04:11It's messing with everyone's mic.
04:13You can grimace and all that.
04:14All we hear is booing."
04:16The tense environment during the interview spilled over to the commercial breaks as well.
04:20Goldberg had a tense back-and-forth with an audience member who questioned her about past
04:24comments about director Roman Polanski, telling her,
04:27"...then be quiet and listen to me."
04:29Meghan McCain also had to reprimand an audience member, saying,
04:32"...if you can let me speak, I would appreciate it."
04:35Multiple staff members reportedly had a difficult time controlling the audience.
04:39They pleaded with them to remain quiet and escorted out people recording things on their
04:43phones.
04:44Overall, it was a chaotic day at The View.
04:48Not only did she hate the boos during her time on The View, but Meghan McCain also disliked
04:52her co-hosts being cheered for their political statements.
04:56McCain frequently referenced the other co-hosts receiving what she called,
05:00"...cheap applause."
05:01The comments were always a shot at the audience, who she believed was against her.
05:05In one episode, when co-host Sunny Hostin criticized Republicans, McCain grew angry
05:10when the audience cheered in agreement.
05:12"...it's easy to get a cheap applause line here, it just is.
05:16And that's fine, take your cheap applause line."
05:18When Hostin declared it wasn't a cheap applause line, McCain said,
05:22"...let me speak."
05:23On another episode, McCain once again referenced the applause, telling the audience,
05:28"...I just feel like sometimes you just want to line up conservatives and throw grapefruits
05:32at us."
05:33Co-hosts tried to express to McCain that no one is attacking her.
05:37McCain once again mentioned how the audience applauds when a co-host disagreed with her.
05:41An exasperated Behar cut her off and said,
05:44"...say something."
