00:00All right, so for the past year and a half, when it came to gaming laptops or performance
00:10laptops in general, Intel products have had to take a bit of a backseat because AMD's
00:14Ryzen chips were just so good.
00:16They made these mobile devices that were just so much better than what Intel was offering
00:20with their 10th gen stuff, right?
00:21They were better performing, they had better thermals, it was just hard for people to recommend
00:26a 10th gen Intel laptop over what AMD was offering.
00:30And this product at the time, this came out like two or three months ago as a 10th gen
00:34chip, and it was available for review at the time, but I didn't want to look at it.
00:38I was like, why would I even show this to people when it's running a chip that's over
00:43a year old?
00:44It did not make sense to me, right?
00:45I knew that the 11th gen stuff was coming right around the corner, and I was hopeful
00:49for it, and this is a product where the difference is going to be most noticeable, like on a very
00:55powerful system with all the bells and whistles, so I waited for it, and I'm so glad I did
01:00because the 11th gen version of this product is just, it's something else.
01:05So this is the MSI GE76, and it is the most powerful laptop I've ever had in the studio.
01:10It has the highest GPU score I've ever gotten in 3DMark, it's just, it's an absolute monster.
01:16So let's get into it.
01:17So the exterior of this device is a bluish-gray color.
01:21It's a metal finish, it's metal on the top panel, metal on the keyboard deck, and it's
01:24a really nice-looking finish to me.
01:26Now this particular device is running an unlocked 11th gen Intel CPU, the 11980HK.
01:32It's the fastest laptop CPU you can get on the market right now, and it's also running
01:36an RTX 3080, the fastest laptop GPU you can get on the market right now, and it's all
01:41packaged to a 17-inch device with a sweet-ass lighting system up front.
01:45This is really cool-looking to me.
01:48Now normally I skip over the RGB elements in gaming laptops because everyone's doing
01:52it and they're all pretty similar to each other.
01:54This one is different.
01:56So normally you'll see light strips, right, like a strip of LED stuff on a laptop that
02:01lights up.
02:02You can change the colors.
02:03This ain't no strip, or at least it doesn't look like one.
02:06It looks like this glowing block up at the front.
02:09And when it's off, like, because the plastic is tinted or smoked, it's got this like dark
02:16haze to it, you can't even tell that it lights up.
02:18It just looks like a regular laptop.
02:19When I first got it, I was like, does this even light up?
02:21It looked like it did in the pictures, but this is just black plastic.
02:24How's that supposed to work?
02:25And then you open it up and it's like, oh, the whole bar lights up.
02:29And if you look closely at it, it almost looks like a fluid on the inside that's glowing.
02:33It's just really unique-looking to me.
02:35Now because it's a smoked plastic, it's a bit darker than I would like.
02:39Like I wish this whole bar was a little bit brighter like you see in the marketing material,
02:44but it's still pretty cool-looking to me.
02:46Okay, so performance.
02:48CPU, fast AF.
02:50GPU, also fast AF.
02:52So it benchmarks really well.
02:53Now these scores were obtained with the regular default settings.
02:56Like it's running an extreme performance, but there's no undervolting going on.
02:59There's no kind of tweaking in the settings.
03:01It's just the regular default stuff out of the box.
03:04You can undervolt it.
03:06And because if you take a look at the internals, the thermal system is very easily removed.
03:10So if you want to, you can repaste it.
03:12But that's something that we don't see very often.
03:14Right now in 2021, so many of the gaming laptop companies are using vapor chambers
03:18or like special thermal compounds.
03:20Sometimes we're running liquid metals.
03:21Sometimes there's like that new stuff, that phase change material.
03:24Those types of thermal systems, you cannot pop open and repaste easily.
03:28Like you can if you're more technically inclined, but for the average person, you don't touch that stuff.
03:33Because this is kind of like the tried and tested simple heatsink and heat pipe,
03:37you can easily pop it open and tweak around with it if you're into that kind of stuff.
03:41Now in terms of the default thermal performance, it's quite good for what's happening here.
03:46So because this is an unlocked CPU, it's just going to let it rip until it hits that thermal wall.
03:50I'm actually pretty happy with the numbers.
03:52I do think that with some undervolting and a repasting,
03:55you could get some really impressive numbers on this particular system.
03:58Now in order to hit these numbers, the fans need to be quite loud.
04:01And when you're in that maximum cooler boost mode, you absolutely need headphones on
04:05or else you won't be able to hear a thing when you're playing games.
04:08It does also seem that the GPU area has a better or just more robust thermal system.
04:13There's just more heat pipes on this side, and because this is an unlocked CPU,
04:17I'm just curious what this system would have been able to do
04:19if they had an equivalent number of heat pipes on the CPU side as well.
04:23But overall, thermal system is good.
04:25You can also see there's two NVMe slots down here.
04:28This is PCIe 4, so the speeds are super fast.
04:30You also have two RAM slots and your Wi-Fi card.
04:33The battery down here is big. It's the biggest you can get, 99.9 Wh.
04:37But even then, because it's a big screen, 17-inch screen with a powerful system,
04:41and with RGBs off, I'm still only getting 5 hours of battery life.
04:44Just over 5 hours.
04:46So you're definitely going to need that AC adapter if you go around.
04:48It's a 280 W, not crazy heavy, but it does add to the package weight.
04:53Now keep in mind that on a system like this, because it's thick,
04:56they're able to cool it so well, right?
04:58Anytime you take a system and you try to shrink it,
05:00like every millimeter you shrink it, it becomes exponentially more difficult
05:04and exponentially more expensive for the product.
05:06So this, I still think this is a very portable package.
05:09It's not like super lightweight, but it's like, I don't know.
05:12I think this is a very viable system, considering how powerful the components are on the inside.
05:18Okay, so just to wrap this up, the screen and the keyboard.
05:20So this is a 1080p screen at 360 Hz.
05:23It's super fast, and there's also a 1440p option as well as a 4K option.
05:27And then the keyboard, this is like a standard MSI keyboard.
05:31It's kind of weird how consistent MSI is with all of their keyboards on their devices.
05:35They have the same layout, the same kind of chiclet style to it.
05:38I like these keyboards, but I feel like you do have to get used to them.
05:41They're not like an immediately enjoyable keyboard to me.
05:44And same with the trackpad. It's decent, but it could be better.
05:47I don't like the surface texture on this as well.
05:49But the click mechanics are good, it's just the texture is a little bit too smooth for my personal taste.
05:55And in terms of the speakers, they're loud, quite loud,
05:58maybe to combat the fan noise that it can reach sometimes.
06:01But they do not project through these speaker cutouts on the left and right of the keyboard.
06:05Those are like a faux cutout.
06:07These are bottom-firing speakers, and they sound loud and reasonably clear,
06:11but they're not like MacBook quality, if you're hoping for that.
06:14Now the ports, there's an SD card slot, there's an Ethernet jack,
06:17it's got basically all the ports you would want on a high-end gaming laptop like this.
06:21Yeah, it's a pretty complete package.
06:23I think, for people that are looking for like ultra-portable devices,
06:27this ain't it, obviously, right?
06:28It's not super, super light and thin,
06:30but I think if you want something that's like the best performance possible,
06:35this is it.
06:36This is better than any AMD system I've seen so far,
06:38and it just delivers performance that you can tweak, right?
06:42You can definitely repaste this thing.
06:43I don't know if it voids your warranty, but it's very easy to access.
06:46And this, to me, is a really good example of what you can do with an Intel system,
06:50if it's cooled properly.
06:51You just get the fastest.
06:53Literally, the fastest.
06:55Okay, hope you guys enjoyed this video.
06:56Thumbs if you liked it.
06:57Subs if you loved it.
06:58See you guys next time.
