00:00Okay, so the phone that I use right now is the OnePlus 7 Pro, it's probably going to be my favorite phone for 2019,
00:08but I also carry around an iPhone SE with me because my wife uses it and I just use it to message some family members
00:14and her through the iMessage app, but every time I use this phone,
00:18it surprises me how good this phone still is for a three-and-a-half, almost four-year-old phone.
00:23So over the past little bit, I decided to check out other phones from this time period.
00:29So this is from 2016, and I feel like this was like the golden age of phones because we have some bangers that year.
00:35OnePlus 3T, S7 from Samsung, as well as the first-generation Pixel, the Pixel 1.
00:41So I also, like, I had the S8, which I think was like a more popular phone than the S7,
00:47but this came out in 2017, so it doesn't really count in this conversation.
00:51And also, I guess the iPhone that's also from this era, like the bigger version, was the iPhone 6S.
00:58So when I take a look at these phones, the first thing that comes to mind is they all had headphone jacks.
01:04Like in 2016, it wasn't even a question. If it was a smartphone, of course it had a headphone jack.
01:08And the pricing on these phones were also really good, like all these were flagship devices that went for $650,
01:15and then we also had the OnePlus phones that were, I think, $450-ish for this,
01:18as well as the smaller SE that went for $400 as well, but these were all reasonably priced for flagship phones.
01:24And they were also, with the exception of the S7, made of metal, very durable materials that would last,
01:30and they were just good phones, which is a reason why so many of these phones still exist in your hands today.
01:36I know a lot of my audience still use some of these phones.
01:39But there's a very big difference in how these phones have aged,
01:43and after playing with them for a little bit and just looking at some research data,
01:47iPhones age so much better than basically every other phone in the market, at least from this time period.
01:53So the first thing I want to talk about is software updates.
01:55I'm sure some of you guys are aware by now, but iPhones have amazing software support.
02:00Like, this phone is three and a half, four years old.
02:03This one is like four years old, a little bit more than four years old.
02:06It's still running the latest version of iOS, which is iOS 13.
02:09So both the SE and the 6S from 2015, 2016, both run the latest version of Apple software.
02:17The Galaxy S7, this phone came out in March-ish of 2016.
02:22This thing runs Android 8 Oreo.
02:24It has some of the recent security patches, but in terms of functionality,
02:28it doesn't have any of the stuff from Android 9 or 10,
02:31which is strange because this is the same age of a phone as the two iPhones.
02:35The OnePlus 3T, this got up to Android 9,
02:38and then there's community builds for Android 10 that you have to load on if you want to.
02:43There's also the first generation of Pixel.
02:45This does have Android 10, but they're going to drop support on it relatively soon.
02:50But the big kind of loser to me, I don't want to use that word,
02:52but the one that stands out as being the worst is Samsung.
02:55Their software support on their phones is surprisingly poor,
02:58especially for a company that's as big as Samsung.
03:01And I've praised their products before.
03:03It's nothing to do with the brand.
03:04I love what they do in terms of hardware,
03:05but when it comes to software, I feel like they should do a better job.
03:09And it's not like the user base needs the latest and greatest version of Android to use their phones.
03:13Clearly not.
03:14But when you do get an update, it brings new features,
03:16and it just keeps your phone feeling fresh and relevant to the user.
03:20And that's something that I think is important.
03:21And let's be real here.
03:22If the iPhone SE can run iOS 13 with just 2 gigs of RAM,
03:27I'm sure the S7 can run Android 10 with its 4 gigs of RAM.
03:30But Samsung chose not to do it.
03:32And this stuff affects resale value, I think, right?
03:35If you look at the value of these phones in the used market right now,
03:38iPhones just do better.
03:39They always have.
03:40And I think the software support is one of the reasons why people are more comfortable
03:44and more confident buying a used iPhone than any other brand.
03:48In terms of performance, none of them stick out as being amazing compared to the OnePlus 7 Pro.
03:52But there is one phone that is the best of the bunch.
03:55I'd say it's the iPhone SE.
03:56It's probably the smoothest experience of the group.
03:58It's probably from software optimizations.
04:01Like, this is faster now and more fluid of an experience now than it was when it launched, which is crazy.
04:08The 3T is also not bad.
04:10This feels pretty fast still.
04:11The other two, Pixel and the S7, I don't feel like they aged well.
04:15The iPhone definitely takes the crown here.
04:17Now, there is one feature amongst all of these that was terrible in 2016.
04:22It's the camera.
04:23These all pale in comparison to any kind of modern smartphone,
04:27both from computational photography and just better hardware in terms of, like, lenses and sensors.
04:32These are all okay.
04:34I'd say the thing that's most interesting to me is how much of an improvement OnePlus has made over the years.
04:39If you look at the 3T, the photos that I'm shooting from this, they were terrible for low light in 2016.
04:44But they've improved a lot to the point where now they have very respectable cameras on their phones.
04:49The one feature that I'd say was very bad on the iPhones compared to everyone else is charge time.
04:55These things just charge slowly and they use lightning cables.
04:58But I still feel like Apple's iPhones from this era aged the best.
05:03Like, in terms of hardware, software, the whole user experience four years later.
05:08What do you think?
05:08Like, if you're an Android user, if you're an iPhone user, which phone do you feel aged the best over the past four years?
05:14And going forward, like, we see iPhone 11s right now.
05:17They're pretty popular.
05:18Is that gonna age well with its lightning port and IPS panel for 2019?
05:22Let me know in the comments below.
05:23Okay, hope you guys enjoyed this video.
05:24Thumbs if you liked it.
05:25Subs if you loved it.
05:27See you guys next time.
