00:00This is Lenovo's Y740 gaming laptop, and it's a good one.
00:07I feel like this is probably going to be one of their best gaming laptops for 2019.
00:11So last year, they had the Y730, a great device, but they could only configure that device to a 1050 Ti,
00:18not a particularly powerful GPU.
00:20This year, they let you crank it up to a 2070 Max-Q at the top end, and, well, let's just get right into it.
00:26This is a well-built machine. It's priced reasonably well.
00:29It's actually one of the cheaper devices you can get out there with this kind of build quality.
00:33It's got aluminum on the top, aluminum on the keyboard deck,
00:36and there is some plastic, like the bottom is plastic, and the back kind of hinge area is plastic,
00:42but you never feel like it's poorly made. It actually is very well made all around.
00:46The ports on this device are predominantly on the back, and you also have some ports on the left and right.
00:50So on the left, you get USB-C and headphone jack, and then on the right, you have USB-A.
00:55And the way that I play my games, like, I just have my mouse on the right, headphone jack on the left,
00:59and it just keeps your setup clean, and they've done a good job with just keeping the ports away from your hands when you're gaming.
01:05Now, aesthetically, I really like the look of this device.
01:07There's no red accents, there's no color accents at all, other than the RGB lighting.
01:11Like, you have full control of it. There's lights on the side, and the logo lights up if you want,
01:15but of the gaming laptops on the market right now, I would consider this to be one of the kind of cleaner-looking ones.
01:21Um, the screen. So this is a 144Hz 1080p panel.
01:25It's a bright screen, it's color accurate, and it's pretty fast, but it also supports G-Sync.
01:30And that's a technology made by Nvidia to kind of remove screen tearing and visual artifacts,
01:34just stuff looks a little bit smoother, especially at lower frame rates.
01:37But this device also allows you to disable G-Sync.
01:40So most devices don't allow you to do that, but on this laptop, you can in software.
01:44And the reason why you would want to turn it off is to get better battery life.
01:47When you have it enabled, stuff looks better, stuff looks smoother, but it eats up batteries really quickly.
01:52Alright, let's talk about performance. This device is running a 6-core CPU, the 8750H.
01:57It's a great performer, especially for multi-core applications.
02:00But it's also running RTX GPUs, so this particular unit has the 2070 Max-Q,
02:05and you're gonna get excellent frame rates across any of the AAA titles right now at 1080p.
02:10There is an option for a 2060, like an RTX 2060.
02:13It's slightly cheaper, and I think for most people, it's gonna be the better option.
02:17You're still gonna get amazing frame rates with that card.
02:19Unless you're really set on, like, ray-traced graphics,
02:22I would go for the RTX 2060 instead of the 2070 Max-Q.
02:26The thermal performance is also good. I'm not getting throttling in benchmarks or stress tests.
02:31And if you look at the bottom of the device, it's a little bit different this year.
02:34They have, like, circular cutouts in the grill.
02:37It looks like more airflow is going through this year's model compared to last year.
02:41And if you look inside, it's not like they're running 50 heat pipes.
02:43It's still two for the CPU, two for the GPU,
02:46so I feel like the thermal performance that they're getting is probably coming from
02:49either better thermal paste or better application of the thermal paste.
02:52Whatever they're doing, they're doing a good job.
02:55You also have access in here to your two RAM sticks, your 2.5-inch SATA, the NVMe, and your Wi-Fi card.
03:01It is a killer 1550. I really wish they'd gone with an Intel card,
03:04but you can always swap that out if you want.
03:07The battery in here remains small. It's the same size as last year, 57 watt-hours.
03:11With G-Sync enabled, I'm only getting, like, two and a half hours of battery life.
03:14With G-Sync disabled, I got four hours, which is, I mean, it's a small battery.
03:19It's kind of expected, but if you have, like, classes, you want to bring this thing to school or work,
03:23you're going to have to have an AC adapter with you.
03:25Now, speaking of that AC adapter, it is a big one.
03:28It's 230 watts, but it's probably the biggest 230-watt AC adapter I've seen to date.
03:34It's easily double the size of the one from the Razer Blade, which is also 230 watts.
03:39The speakers remain unchanged from last year. They sound pretty clean.
03:42They're not, like, the world's best speakers or anything,
03:44but I feel like they do a good job with them, and they're located in a reasonable spot.
03:47They're kind of on the side, projecting outwards, and the fans are also pretty quiet.
03:52I do wish they had better fan control. Like, I wish there was software so you can crank it up whenever you wanted,
03:56but they're pretty quiet, even on load.
03:58The keyboard also remains unchanged from last year.
04:01It's got a pretty clean layout with macro keys on the left.
04:03It's got great lighting. I think it has some of the best lighting in the business.
04:06It's got some very extensive software.
04:08It's also supposedly water-resistant, but I didn't have big enough balls to test that.
04:12The one complaint I would have about it is that I wish the keys were a little bit more responsive.
04:18Like, it is a gaming laptop, so if you're playing games on this thing,
04:21it can feel a little bit softer at times than I would like.
04:24The trackpad is also a Windows Precision trackpad.
04:27Great trackpad. Kind of a smooth texture.
04:30There's also hardware buttons on the bottom if you like to use those,
04:32but overall, it's a good trackpad.
04:34There are some things I dislike, obviously.
04:37I feel like I've just been going on in this video about how much I like about it.
04:40For one, the webcam is located on the bottom of the screen.
04:43It's a nose cam, but because it's a gaming laptop, I feel like I can forgive that.
04:47The bottom bezel is also a little bit thick, like the chin of the screen,
04:50but there's very little I dislike about this device.
04:53I feel like, if anything, this kind of sets the bar of what manufacturers should kind of aim for.
04:59Like, a well-priced, appropriately priced product with great performance and good looks.
05:04I think Lenovo built this device just right.
05:06Like, it's not super thin, it's thin enough,
05:08but they didn't make this thing so thin to the point of detriment.
05:12Like, a lot of companies, they try to make these thinner and thinner gaming laptops,
05:15and it just makes them really difficult to cool.
05:17These guys obviously did a great job.
05:19It's not the thinnest device out there, but it's kind of a great overall product.
05:23Okay, hope you guys enjoyed this video.
05:24Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it.
05:26See you guys next time.
