00:00It really has been a week that's been dominated by housing, hasn't it?
00:05It started off with that news that the Prime Minister is going to be spending up to $4.3
00:10million on his home in the central coast in New South Wales.
00:15That kicked off a discussion about negative gearing with the Greens, releasing some analysis
00:20suggesting a lot of renters could become homeowners under Labor's old housing policies.
00:27And then today, this announcement from the Coalition opposition leader Peter Dutton heading
00:32to Perth, heading to significantly a Greenfields housing development site on the outskirts
00:40of Perth to announce this $5 billion fund that was really based around speeding up infrastructure
00:48delay.
00:49So that's as Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, who was also there, Bridget McKenzie, said
00:55the not sexy stuff when it comes to housing.
00:58So that's things like sewage.
01:00It's things like access roads.
01:03It's things like water.
01:04It's things like power.
01:05What this new coalition policy, which we're just sort of getting the details of now, what
01:10it appears to be stimulating really is construction of these sorts of infrastructure things, which
01:17are critical to building new houses.
01:20The coalition says this will lead to around half a million new homes.
01:25So this is what opposition leader Peter Dutton has to say about the Coalition's new housing policy.
01:30Today, I announced the Coalition government will invest $5 billion into creating at least
01:36500,000 new homes for people here in Perth, people in New South Wales, in Victoria, in
01:43Tasmania, right across the country.
01:45This is a game changer for young Australians who can't see the opportunity yet to own a home.
01:52Just moments ago, we saw the Federal Housing Minister, Clara O'Neill, get up and really
01:58respond just initially to this new policy from the Federal Opposition.
02:05Here is Housing Minister Clara O'Neill, here's what she had to say in these early stages
02:10responding to this housing policy.
02:12Peter Dutton has already said he would cut $19 billion out of Labor's ambitious housing
02:18agenda.
02:19Now he wants a pat on the back for putting $5 billion back in.
02:23Peter Dutton's taking with one hand and giving with the other, it's a card trick.
02:28Housing Minister Clara O'Neill suggesting that opposition leader Peter Dutton taking
02:33with one hand, picking up with the other.
02:35Look, Ruby, it's clear we're not in the pre-election campaign officially yet, but from what we're
02:42seeing from both the major parties and the Greens, particularly this week, housing shaping
02:47up as a key election issue before we head to the next federal election.
