00:38Charles mclare gaining on george russell verstappen's taking the inside line down towards turn one
00:43Verstappen from russell around the outside comes carlos saenz gets a bit bogged down lando norris from fourth on the grid goes wheel-to-wheel
00:51George russell down the hill and gets in the second place and that's exactly the start that lando norris needed
00:58Russell was very slow releasing off the top of the first corner as an aston martin and fernando alonso
01:04Goes across the gravel and then lando braved it out around the outside and that gave him track position for turn three
01:11So he's made up two places from the start. He's off the hills on max verstappen who leads this race
01:16Lando norris in second down the inside here comes the rb of yuki sunoda trying to get past kevin magnuson
01:23Forces magnuson wide and off the track magnuson stays ahead sunoda on the brand new medium compound
01:29So that gives him an advantage in these early corners
01:32And he looks to have a pace advantage as well as he picks up the slipstream is into the next breaking zone
01:36We go and charles mclare down the inside on george russell great move from the ferrari driver
01:41Can he hang on because he went a bit too deep he's got the inside line into the next corner
01:46And I think that might just help him out, but russell is sticking to this absolutely beautifully
01:51Now he has the inside line and holds on to that third place
01:54But for how much longer he's got the inside line through 16 17 and 18 is george russell
02:00But this is released verstappen and norris with a clear gap now
02:04Verstappen from norris as they round the final corner then comes russell then comes charles mclare
02:11Carlos signs in fifth place hamilton up to sixth magnuson sunoda hulkenberg in ninth and perez in 10th colo pinto
02:18Slipping down into 11th place last stroll making up a place and his teammate fernando alonso down in 16th
02:24Oscar piastri up into 14th. There was a lot going on on that first lap
02:29But max verstappen has held the advantage held the lead and had a nine tenths gap to lando norris as they pass the line
02:36Yeah, and he's doing a bit of a verstappen as well
02:38Isn't he with the great sector times now and trying to build get out of the drs zone verstappen?
02:45Oh just about a second ahead now. This looks like the verstappen and red bull at the earlier part of the season
02:52I was already told rachel brooks. I'm confident i'm hopeful that we're going to have decent race pace
02:57It's certainly looking like that at the moment. He doesn't think he's broken the drs
03:02Still less than a second between verstappen and norris
03:05So we'll see what that does down the back straight now that lando's got a bit of drs
03:09He's already taken two tenths out of that advantage just hit cover two ferraris
03:13They both got drs carlos sainz getting pretty racy charles leclerc on the inside hangs on to fourth place
03:19Sainz does get a really good exit and we're going to see a fight between the two ferraris
03:23I think now for the rest of this race
03:25Lewis hamilton's done a stunning middle sector on this lap and george russell did a great first set down the inside goes carlos sainz
03:32On charles leclerc, but he's gone too deep leclerc gets that place back again. No team orders down at ferrari
03:38It's wheel-to-wheel action between the two scuderias
03:41Yeah, they're going for it aren't they that's team against team, but that also that brings lewis hamilton onto their gearboxes
03:49And still that gap out in front less than a second. It's another drs zone down towards turn one
03:55Lando norris a bit too far back george russell on his own in third place
03:59The two ferraris separate separated by a few meters there goes carlos sainz down the inside leclerc knew he was coming
04:06It's the old switcheroo, isn't it for charles leclerc?
04:09And back into fourth he goes and let's not forget sainz is out of that team been replaced by lewis hamilton for next year
04:16He's driving for himself in the closing stages of the season. That's clear to see fastest lap to george russell on that last lap
04:24And he's still sticking
04:26To the rear wing of lando norris as best he can but he hasn't got that drs advantage as yet
04:32Norris about a tenth of a second closer to verstappen than he was at this point turn 11 on the last lap
04:39Elsewhere perez just behind nico holkenberg trying to get into the points for redbull
04:45Piastri on the tail there of pierre gasly alex albon still stuck right in the back williams looking towards the grand prix
04:51I think rather than trying to make an impression in the spring here with albon down the inside again
04:56Tries carlos sainz, but he's blocked off this time around. Yeah, that was a bit too
05:01Too much to ask there
05:03All he'll be doing is annoying his teammate and distracting him rather than a bona fide
05:08Overtake then puts him offline and overheats his tires a little bit
05:12But now they're getting on to the back of george russell. I mean sprint race weekend
05:19Uh, we've got to try and come back on the others if possible copy
05:24In other words call my teammate off let's let's catch them up then go racing
05:29Oh, this is super racing. It really is and verstappen sets a fastest lap of the race
05:34But still as they cross the line and those norris less than a second behind him in second place
05:40Bodes well for the grand prix this doesn't it? Very well
05:44And uh, we have qualifying a little bit later on grand prix tomorrow cars come out of park further
05:50Adjust a few bits change a few bits ahead of the grand prix qualifying and let's have a look at the sprint start here
05:56Pretty even between verstappen and russell, but verstappen covered him off
06:00Yeah, verstappen knows full well that p2 has often taken the leader
06:03So he went over and became the p2 man effectively
06:07Taking the line and this is where russell was slow
06:10Getting up and running it held the two ferraris up and gave lando norris a chance around the outside
06:16And they all got away pretty easily they should be doing by this
06:20Part of the season watch lando norris here. Watch how he hugs the inside line
06:24He never really veers too much from that curve and that served him. Well martin
06:31The bumps gone in turn two that helped him a lot there and once he got track position
06:37He was away, wasn't he? So this is oscar piastri in the other mclaren. I'm watching the start alongside you
06:42I'm watching that ferrari battle as well sites locking up trying to get ahead of charles eclair as he has been doing
06:48Ever since the lights went out
06:50And he got ahead again locked up charles. I said, thank you very much. I'll take that back again
06:55So if that message from charles eclair was taken on board by the team
06:59It's not got through to carlos sainz just yet as you were putting out yesterday sainz has finished fifth as in every sprint so far
07:05This year in qualified fifth too. He's trying extremely hard to change that but still
07:10No, norris is now outside the one second
07:14That means he's out of verstappen's drs at the moment. Will that put him under pressure for george russell?
07:21Well russell has put in a stomping lap there and it's now really gained on norris
07:25I don't know if lando norris made a mistake on that
07:27Last lap or not or if he's just finding his time and we often see don't we that mclaren?
07:32As the stints go a little bit longer having a tire performance advantage because they look after their tires quite well
07:39Russell's done five laps on his tires verstappen and mclare have done three laps on their tires
07:45Norris has done five laps on their tires before this race got underway
07:50Let's see what happens in the closing stages verstappen though looking very comfortable out in front currently
07:55What about his teammate sergio perez down towards turn 12? We go. There's a big lock up there

08:13And kind of distracting but still carlos sainz
08:16And that that looked like uh, mclare looked like he was uh, well off the track there, doesn't he?
08:21Right george russell as you can see right on the tail now. Lando norris. He's in trouble
08:25It's norris charles mclare sees carlos sainz coming and he thinks now i'm gonna have to try and sort this out because
08:31I was gonna try the switcheroo, but it's not quite worked mclare went off the track
08:35Sainz is now ahead of him this time. He might make that one stick. Yes
08:39mclare would have had to given it back there because he actually went off the track and would have been perceived to have gained
08:44An advantage sainz is through russell all over the back of lando norris
08:50He's getting caught in that turbulent air a little bit now george russell
08:54He is so close to lando norris through turn one
08:56They go you can see how close they are and you can see how close lewis amilton is to the back of the two ferraris
09:02And that squabble is going to carry on a bit charles mclare wants that fourth place, uh back again, uh, the stewards looked into
09:09Kevin, magnuson believing the track and gaining an advantage. It was on lap one. It was at turn 11
09:14They said he didn't gain an advantage no further action because he got bundled off the road
09:19So that that was the only decision he could make there in my
09:23Should we sit on the front wing of george russell's mercedes? Have a little look at what might transpire down the back straight

09:34Sainz thinks he's got the pace to try and catch george russell
09:37I would have loved to have sat on that front wing a little bit longer there because as we accelerate to top speed the drs flap
09:42Uh gets, uh opened up by george russell. He's gaining on norris. He's gaining on norris
09:46Norris wants to force him wide around the outside norris does just that george russell thinks no i'll save that for another day
09:54And maybe that day might come a little bit sooner than you think is there a gap down the inside here for george russell?
09:59He's really going for it through this next section of corners inside line goes to norris who stays in second place, but only just
10:07yeah, and norris was a well out of position there and
10:11russell wouldn't
10:12Release it back onto the racing line, but trying to go around the outside of turn 15 simply didn't work for george russell
10:21So we'll take them through to the first corner here as a staffer now two seconds out in front has got this race
10:30Pushed up and potentially damages damaging his rears a bit more than we are
10:34From the outside. It looks like he's got this race very much under control. Norris is in defensive mode. Anthony davidson's at sky race control

10:46I've heard some information from norris's engineer telling him to watch out for the rear tire slip and snaps on the exit turn 12
10:53Russell has been told by his engineer. He's gaining up to four tenths in the drs against norris in that fight down
11:00Which is absolutely massive. I dare say he's half a second behind lando norris
11:04He's got the chance for for an overtake into turn 12
11:07And the ferrari duo are now closing the gap they cost themselves some time with that
11:13Entertainment squabble, but they're coming back now at george russell
11:18They go they go for it. People say that you know sprint race. Nobody really tries that hard. This is hard racing
11:24They do oscar piastri meanwhile up into 13th and he's been noted for forcing pierre gasly off the tracks
11:30See if the stewards, uh, have a look at that one. That's the battle for 13th. No points there

11:36He's got lance stroll on his sides now down that back straight stroll on the right hand side
11:40Not really fighting that one too hard piastri had too much pace
11:45He has to be pleased with that
11:46He's been tucked up behind the aston martin of the lance stroll for two or three laps now
11:51With a cue behind him and now he can get after the uh,
11:56The williams ahead of him of collapinto
11:58It looks to me like lando norris has put a bit more daylight between himself and george russell
12:04That's in the other mclaren carlos sainz is therefore a little bit closer to george russell
12:10You're right martin those ferraris are starting to reel in
12:12The cars that are ahead of them george russell currently in third place last time he finished top three in a sprint
12:18Was nearly two years ago in sao paulo when he went and won that particular race
12:24Half a second between the two ferraris and not much over that between sainz and russell
12:30And we've talked about lewis hamilton probably would have could have should have been on pole position for this race
12:35And he had he not a bit yellow flag, but he struggled to hang on in race pace
12:40Six seconds off the lead and cannot hang on to the ferraris at the moment
12:44I think this is a fascinating race at the moment because there's that battle that's going on
12:48And lando norris is definitely getting closer to
12:52Max verstappen are those engineers right on the pit wall at mclaren is verstappen
12:57Damaging his rear tires just a little bit more
13:00We'll see because we're not even at half race distance in this sprint as yet charles mclare with drs carlos sainz with drs
13:07They'll stay fourth and fifth into turn 12 as we go to 10 credits
13:11And it's the tires crofty that's keeping lewis hamilton just keeping a watching brief on the fight of the ferraris in front of him
13:17Oh, there's a long so I can see a lot. So do you need to do the replay fernando?
13:21Alonso liam lawson is the car ahead of him
13:24Not so much experience sixth race, uh for liam lawson this weekend, man
13:32Not just me who calls them still calls them the alpha towers
13:35After a bad opening phase for fernando alonso, he's fighting they're making the other ones in um, kevin magnuson
13:42There's a fight going on with him. He was told to give the place back to yuki
13:45Sonoda, but in the meantime crofty hulkenberg has overtaken sonoda
13:49So there's an argument going on down there back in the field and the stewards are looking at
13:53Piastri and gasly for forcing another driver off the track alpina mclaren
13:57I'm amazed they can tell the two apart quite frankly and fernando alonso lost a place there
14:01Uh to west about ocon in that movement ocon's got ahead of lawson
14:04Yeah, ocon overtook two cars with that and there was the clash
14:08um
14:10It's a question of whether it was piastri under control looked under control to me
14:14Um with with that, uh, was that a racing incident or did he get in front of him off the road?
14:19We need to see a different angle or two
14:21But yeah, uh, we uh, we were watching as ocon passed both alonso and then lawson in short order
14:28Yeah
14:30So verstappen norris one and a half seconds a difference current george russell has dropped back behind lando norris
14:37Sainz and leclerc both on their tail and leclerc's just being told a little bit by his
14:43His race engineer to just save a bit turn six. Don't give it too much
14:48Looking out for these tires even in a short race like this tire wear
14:52Absolutely crucial a lot of high speed corners and
14:56And then you get this much more technical section and there he goes at the inside carlos sainz grabs track position
15:04and
15:04Russell off the track needs to yield does yield carlos sainz then moves himself up into the top three lewis
15:12Hamilton complaining about rear graining on his tires george russell as he's suffering two track temperatures about seven degrees higher
15:20Than they were for qualifying for this sprint race yesterday. We've got 10 laps to go
15:24We've got a race on our hands here russell's under under immense pressure lost out
15:29The sites could lose out to charles leclerc very soon
15:32Yeah
15:32It looks like russell when he was hunting down lando norris took too much out of his tires in the early phase of the race
15:38And struggling for traction out of turn one. You can absolutely see it. Can't you how much better traction charles leclerc has
15:46As he came out of that corner and swoops down the hill
15:48He's gonna have to to stay behind russell though for these next series of corners
15:53You can see how the ferrari gets disturbed by the turbulent wake coming from the mercedes out in front sainz
15:59Meanwhile now he's been freezed and can chase after lando norris
16:03It's just at the fastest first sector time that we've seen in this race so far back to him in a moment
16:08Let's look at charles leclerc and george russell down this straight
16:12If russell gets a bit of extra drs advantage, that'll be good for his preservation
16:17There's a battle on for first and in three laps time norris apparently could be right on mustafa's rear wing
16:22Yeah, if norris keeps at this pace that he has the last two or three laps
16:26He should be within the drs. So certainly within two laps. He'll be getting the rear wing open
16:32He is coming back at mustafa. Has mustafa got any time left in his pocket?
16:38That one left his toast
16:42And there goes charles leclerc doing to george russell what carlos sainz did to george russell three and a half miles previously
16:49That was a carbon copy of one ferrari overtaking a mercedes. It's happened twice and russell's down the fifth
16:56Interesting is his front left though. I mean, it's an anti-clockwise circuit
17:00Um, you'd think it'd be the front right that would take the most punishment, but obviously, uh three turns three four five
17:07Six and seven and eight particularly you do lean on the front left tire heavily 13 and 14, too
17:13And if you're following the battle out in front
17:15Four tenths of a second mustafa faster than norris through the final sector on lap 10
17:21So that forecast might have to be put back a lap if he carries on doing that franco
17:26Colopinto is ahead of oscar piastri for how much longer is franco colopinto going to be ahead of oscar piastri?
17:32Because the mclaren is gaining on the young argentine. This is the youngest driver on the grid
17:38And I think the second youngest driver third youngest driver on the grids in oscar piastri
17:44And mclaren could do with piastri sneaking into the points. Yeah, if he gets a chance, however, as you say that martin
17:52Up on our screen flashes oscar piastri plus five seconds. The stewards have said he did force pierre gasly off the track
18:00so
18:02He's moving to the points could be somewhat compromised by that five second penalty. Yeah, so we only got a quick glance at that
18:09So let's have a look at it and they don't like it. Now. We've got lewis hamilton catching george russell
18:15At a second a nap so russell really struggling out there and will lose a place to his teammate shortly
18:22He actually has a look at colopinto at 12 down the inside
18:27You're not getting past me on this particular occasion whilst all that is going on
18:32Extending his lead out in front once more max verstappen now over two seconds where it was about four laps ago

18:40Put the charge on and it seems
18:44That verstappen has got this race very much in control the tires were draining up a little bit
18:49Maybe he's driven through that phase martin and he's got rid of the hit groups
18:54They could well have done so hamilton takes another 1.3 out of russell on that lap
19:00that's the moment that
19:01Carla sites got past george russell
19:05We can now see what it looked like on boards with the ferrari drivers started fifth up into third place
19:13Awesome move. Let's go
19:15Lay out the track really promotes overtake
19:18Something that should be
19:20Copied, uh in other tracks around the world that the combination of corners works a treat
19:25It took inspiration i think from turkey at the end of the lap at istanbul park. Yeah, which also works very well
19:32Just if you don't get the move done at turn 12, you can stay really close
19:36You can hang your rival out to dry and they've got no defense really sooner or later
19:41The door's going to open if you've got enough grip to pass them
19:44And this is a fabulous bit of track and to be fair
19:46It's a fabulous three and a half miles of track here undulation great corners straight heavy braking zones got the lot
19:53As here comes sergio perez behind yuki. Sonoda perez in the red bull seats. Sonoda wouldn't mind that for next season
20:01And he didn't really defend too hard, but might fancy his chances to get back again
20:07Maybe felt that perez would go a little bit too deep and he could get that place back again
20:10But that's not how it panned out as he goes down the inside yuki sonoda rather cool
20:15Sergio perez napping there the red bull's got better traction coming out of that left-hander, but they're going to go
20:21Almost side by side through the triple apex perez stays ahead
20:25But I don't know how much longer he's going to stay ahead for sonoda is not going to give this one up
20:30No, he's not and in that piastri also passed conor pinto, but carries the five second penalty
20:37Yeah, so at the moment it dropped back a few places right let's see here yuki sonoda wants to prove to red bull
20:43That he's good enough
20:45To get a seat at the big team
20:47And locks up going into turn one
20:49Which is not gonna be that impressive because it gives sergio perez just a little bit of a letoff there
20:54Where it seemed to all eternity that sonoda was going to get past him again
20:59Yeah, he got a little bit too ambitious there did yuki sonoda on the brake pedal at the top of the hill
21:05He imagined himself past there didn't he but unfortunately the front axle didn't agree with him
21:10Sonoda will carry it on and now oscar piastri is going to join that fight and we're going to see now once again
21:16Why oscar piastri has got the five second penalty for his move on the pierre casley

21:27Passing the williams easy enough down there all under control and this was a

21:36So we're watching that meanwhile ahead of them perez and sonoda really going for it
21:41Down the inside goes oscar piastri this time yuki sonoda has to take to the runoff area piastri
21:48Is it looking to send it said daniel riccardo who might not be racing here?
21:52But piastri is trying to summon up the spirits of daniel riccardo and his charge in towards the top 10
21:58Riccardo sonoda's former teammate i'm sure he'll be loving watching all this
22:03He asked me just has to concede because there was no room side by side through turn 17
22:08And the rb getting very tail happy on the throttle as well now as if his rear tires are getting a bit hot for yuki sonoda
22:16lap 14 out of 19
22:19As they crossed the line in 10th and 11th place must happen to check it out a bit here 2.3 seconds
22:25Piastri is certainly enjoying himself in the sunshine and just overtaking for fun
22:30But sonoda is a bit stubborn so far swooping down the hill we go surely. There's no room to overtake here
22:38Hey, yeah, you're right
22:39Yeah, sonoda making a claim. He's like if you're you do need a driver in the main red bull team
22:46You have to consider me that's his that's his story and that's his message
22:50And all this is allowing sergio perez just a bit of breathing space but perez way out of the points once again
22:57Magnussen and hulkenberg currently in seventh and eighth
23:00Sonoda's been told to give back the position
23:03And i'm assuming that is on uh, oscar piastri because he did leave the track and has stayed ahead
23:10He's not looking like he's giving back the position any time in a hurry
23:13So maybe he's just carrying on that debate and see what happens as we get to the end of the straight
23:18But he's not giving back the position because he moved late there in the braking zone to cut off the threat of oscar piastri
23:26Carlopinso is closing in on this particular battle and there's absolutely no sign that yuki sonoda wants to concede 10th place five laps to go
23:34Charles leclerc is catching his teammate carlos sites as we continue to focus on this battle for 10 11 and 12
23:42Oh, yeah, definitely he forced me off if I didn't go off definitely I had a contact for sure

23:49What they tend to do race the race director says teams sort it out yourselves before I get involved
23:55If you can't sort it out, I might get involved. So we'll see if he does
23:59Yeah spicy, isn't it? He's saying i'm not giving it back. I don't think I should um, but
24:04And actually for you pretty calm in the cockpit because he can be a bit of a firework in situations
24:09Like that, but that was calm and what has happened now the race director, uh neils vitich has promoted
24:15Yuki sonoda believing the track is gaining an advantage. So that will go to the stewards
24:19We'll see if they uh investigate or not
24:22While all that's happened
24:232.3 seconds the gap out in front for stafford and norris carlos sites 1.2 seconds behind almost within drs range of lando
24:31Norris and behind carlos sites very much in the drs range his teammate charles leclerc
24:37So the ferraris who have spent a long time in this race scrapping amongst themselves and with george russell and now back to scrapping amongst themselves

24:45For the the right to stand in the top three at the end and I have no idea martin who's going to get that
24:51No, and the mercedes run stalled out completely in fifth and sixth
24:55now also
24:56Hamilton's run on george russell his teammate has also stalled out. That's right. Here comes oscar piastri once again
25:03Needs to go around the long way to try and get past yuki sonoda who positions his car well
25:10but clarence just seems to have
25:12a better braking stability
25:14On the on the rv closes right up but fractionally just too far back to make a move
25:20Uh to to try and get past the stewards are looking at sonoda for leaving the track and gaining an advantage
25:26He's placing his car well sonoda
25:28But uh, it's you're reported for that. It's not me for a very good reason, isn't it?
25:35Ted kravitz, can we head down to you?
25:37So i've got an explanation for mercedes is how they've managed to drop off pace so spectacularly
25:41It is just the hot rear tires crofty. The rear tires have just overheated both on russell and hamilton hamilton
25:48Slightly was closing seconds. Ted. There goes oscar piastri
25:51You can't see him on your screen
25:53You can now and he's ahead of yuki sonona as they head down the hill towards turn two piastri up to 10 back to you
26:00And just on the ferraris
26:01Leclerc still closing on carlos sainz helped by the beat of the by the drs
26:06But it does look like charles leclerc's looked after his tires a bit better than sainz
26:11And we have verstappen and norris first and second if it stays that way
26:15They will have scored exactly the same number of points since we last raced in the us for the miami grand prix
26:23Of course for 203 point seats. That's what 12 grand prix and uh, three spread races
26:28Yeah, no further action for leaving the track between sunoda and piastri. So that's fine
26:33but
26:34And that's a big story
26:36Yeah, you know with all the success of mclaren the speed and the brilliant victories by lando in in zandvoort and singapore
26:44They've scored exactly the same points since may we keep saying
26:48If if lando is going to put the real fear into max verstappen
26:52He needs a weekend where he outscores him by 10 points or 15 points and then he needs to do it the next weekend
26:58Because at the moment a handful of points here and there not going to win you the title even though
27:03And he's got 173 points up for grabs still after this, uh, sprint race. Pierre gaz
27:08He's been shown the black and white flags. He keeps moving the track and exceeding track limits
27:12One more he's going to get a penalty gaz. He's down to 14th. I'm sure he won't care too much about that
27:17Although he is holding up at the moment and keeping at bay his teammate pierre gazlin
27:22So he's running out of laps, but carlos sainz is point one of a second point two of a second away from
27:29Getting the rear wing open
27:30Just make sure you look after the car weight racing
27:35Uh, that means
27:37Don't run into your teammates. Yeah, quite because he's well he did the first sector alone here hamilton's been four tenths faster
27:43At that george russell you can see on the left hand side of your screen that mercedes battle near the main street
27:49You can see the ferrari battle. Carlos sainz is ahead of charles. Leclerc
27:54I'd rather get the feeling both drivers are going to give each other a big
27:58Big hug at the end of this because they'll have enjoyed what's been a super little scrap

28:06Do you not think do you not think that they've been nip and tuck it's been really good that goes out saying but
