What difference will the ACT election make?

00:00It will probably mean that the Greens will have less influence.

00:03In this current term just gone, there were six Greens MLAs and they formed government

00:09with ten Labor MLAs.

00:12Of the six Greens MLAs, three were in cabinet.

00:16But looking forward to the next assembly, it's only looking like two or three Greens

00:22will be elected, which means that when they go into negotiating with Labor around positions,

00:28their position is weakened and they're not likely to have the same number of ministers

00:34as they did in the most recent term.

00:37It means that Labor policy will have an upper hand.

00:42One example could be gambling.

00:44That was a very contentious issue at the end of the last assembly.

00:49Labor and the Greens had different positions on how they wanted to reduce gambling harm

00:53from poker machines.

00:55Labor's aim was to just try and reduce the number of poker machines in clubs, whereas

01:00the Greens wanted a networked system that was able to monitor gambling harm across the

01:05poker machines.

01:07Now that the Greens are out, that idea looks like it will not occur as much and the Labor's

01:14plan to reduce poker machines is going to be favoured more.
