00:19Episode 72 Surprise at Mac's Party
00:23When Blaine stepped off the elevator onto the seventh floor of the hospital,
00:28he could tell which room was Max's without even checking the number.
00:32He heard laughter and shouts coming from the room at the end of the hall.
00:36It sounded as if Max's birthday party was in full swing,
00:40and Blaine smiled as he walked towards the open doorway.
00:44Zoe wasn't quite sure how it started, but a cake fight had broken out in Max's room.
00:49The nurses had cake in their hair, and both Max and Matthew were covered in icing.
00:54There was cake everywhere, but somehow Zoe had managed to avoid the fray,
00:59and she was the only clean person left in the room,
01:02a fact that had just caught the attention of the other guests.
01:06Sophie, why are you still so clean? You're the birthday boy's mother, and yet you've been left
01:12out. I think we need to rectify this oversight immediately, Matthew teased with a laugh.
01:19That's right. You have to get her.
01:22She can't be left out of the fun. The nurses egged Matthew on as he stretched out his hand
01:28to wipe a glob of frosting onto Zoe's face. Oh no, you don't. Zoe cried, darting to the side
01:36as Matthew barely missed her face. The laughing Zoe ran away, with Matthew giving chase. Zoe
01:43turned and shouted over her shoulder at him. Matthew, stop! No. But since Zoe wasn't watching
01:51where she was going, she tripped and stumbled just as Matthew lunged at her, and together they
01:57crashed onto the bed with Matthew landing on top of Zoe. His cake-covered face was inches from hers.
02:05Seeing the two of them in this intimate position, the adults in the room laughed,
02:10and soon someone started chanting Kiss with everyone else in the room, soon joining in
02:15Kiss Kiss Kiss. Even the birthday boy was clapping, his little hands giggling as he
02:21innocently shouted, Kiss Mommy. Kiss my Mommy. Matthew and Zoe didn't expect to suddenly find
02:28themselves in this position. Zoe wasn't taking it seriously, still laughing as she looked up
02:34at Matthew, but Zoe could clearly see a burning light in Matthew's eyes. Then he lowered his head
02:41and gave Zoe a gentle kiss on her forehead. Seeing this, everyone in the room, including Max,
02:48whooped and cheered excitedly, everyone but the man now standing in the open doorway.
02:54Matthew raised the corner of his mouth and smiled down at Zoe without the slightest bit of
02:59awkwardness. Just treat this as Max's gift. He seems to be especially happy about this.
03:06Sure enough, Zoe turned her head and saw her jubilant son, who was clapping and shouting in
03:12excitement. Movement behind Max's back caught Zoe's eye, and she noticed a pair of long,
03:19masculine legs wearing custom Italian leather boots. Zoe's gaze shifted upward, her heartbeat
03:26quickening as her face grew pale, and then Zoe found herself staring right into Blaine's stormy
03:31gray eyes. Blaine was here at Max's birthday party, his son's birthday party. Zoe froze and
03:42her mind went blank as she tried to process the fact that Blaine was standing there.
03:47Why was he here? Realizing she was still lying on the bed under Matthew, Zoe hurriedly looked away
03:54and crawled out from under him, her face flushed red with embarrassment. What do we do now?
04:01Zoe thought, her panic building. She didn't dare to meet Blaine's gaze at the door.
04:08As for Blaine, his dark eyes continued to stare at Zoe without flinching.
04:13His gaze felt like sharp daggers being flung at Zoe's body. Matthew stood up as well. He was
04:20as shocked to see Blaine as Zoe. He was stunned, silent, and just stood there watching. Zoe and
04:27Matthew's sudden mood shift didn't go unnoticed by the other party guests, and everyone followed.
04:34Zoe and Matthew shocked gazes and looked toward the door. Who was this incredibly handsome stranger,
04:40they wondered. Only Max seemed unsurprised by Blaine's arrival. When he saw Blaine at the door,
04:47his smile grew brighter, and he immediately ran towards him in excitement. Dr. Dexter,
04:53the little guy, sweetly called out to him,
04:56Max. Zoe cried out in alarm, instantly and completely at a loss as to what to do.
05:05Seeing the little boy rush over, Blaine set the gifts in his hands on the table next to him,
05:10bent down and hugged Max. When Blaine stood up, with Max still in his arms, he looked coldly at
05:16Zoe, his eyebrows slightly raised. What's wrong? Is Miss Fuller afraid of me? Did you think I would
05:25eat your precious son? Blaine's clear, icy voice instantly chilled the temperature in the once
05:31bustling room. All the adults stood silently watching. Only Max didn't seem to notice the
05:38mood change as he happily wrapped his little arms around Blaine's neck and introduced his friend to
05:44his mommy. Mommy, this is Dr. Dexter. Don't be afraid. He's my friend, the little boy said as
05:53attempted to reassure Zoe while snuggling into Blaine's arms. Blaine smiled faintly without
05:58looking at Zoe or Matthew. He turned his head toward Max and said sincerely, Happy birthday,
06:05Max. This simple sentence seemed to hit the softest spot in Zoe's heart. She felt her nose
06:12tingle and tears behind her eyes. No one but Zoe knew that one of Max's dreams had just come true.
06:19His father was here celebrating his birthday with him. Max would be so excited to know
06:24that it was his daddy wishing him happy birthday just now, not for the first time. Zoe wondered
06:31if she'd done the right thing four years ago. She didn't know if it had been right or wrong to
06:37deprive them of knowing each other. She had guarded their son's life but sacrificed his
06:43relationship with his father. Max was ecstatic to see Blaine. He snickered in Blaine's arms.
06:50Dexter, I thought you wouldn't come. Of course I came. I wouldn't miss this. Blaine put Max down
06:59and squatted beside the little guy while pointing at the pile of gifts on the table. Go and see if
07:04you like the presents I brought you. I like them. Max didn't even look before shouting. He did and
07:12hurriedly ran over to check out his gifts. The little guy excitedly looked over at Matthew.
07:19Look, it's a hatchling just like the one you bought for me. Blaine was momentarily stunned,
07:26although he masked it. He looked past Zoe and Matthew, who was standing behind her, and then
07:32at the gift on the bedside table. A hatchling box is exactly like his own gift. It seemed the clerk
07:38was right. This toy was very popular right now. Zoe quickly walked over to Max and picked him up.
07:46She said awkwardly to Blaine, thank you for your thoughtfulness, but this really wasn't necessary.
07:52You didn't need to bring him so many expensive presents. Zoe was flustered and trying to be
07:57polite, but Blaine didn't see it that way. Blaine looked at Zoe's red face and a snide smile rose on
08:04one side of his mouth as he said curtly, if Miss Fuller doesn't approve of my gifts, then just
08:10throw them away. Blaine glanced over at the hatchling box that Matthew had given Max and
08:16added indifferently, it doesn't seem to be of any value anymore anyway. No, don't throw it away.
08:25It's mine. I like Dr. Dexter's gift. When Max heard what Blaine said, his eyes immediately
08:33welled up with tears. He tightly hugged Dr. Dexter's present in his arms, as if he was afraid
08:40that someone would suddenly snatch it away. Blaine suddenly couldn't stay in the suffocating room
08:45even a second longer. The gifts are yours to keep. Max, I just wanted to come by and drop them off.
08:53I have some things to do, so I'll be leaving now. Happy birthday. Then Blaine walked out the door
09:00without looking back. After Blaine left the depressing room, he started walking blindly to
09:06his car. His heart had never felt so crushed before. His thoughts were jumbled as he thought
09:11about what had just happened in that room. When Blaine arrived at the entrance of Max's room,
09:17he immediately froze when the first person he saw was Zoe. Zoe, who was currently on the bed
09:23lying under Matthew, as he leaned down to kiss her. Blaine couldn't process why the two of them
09:30were there in the room until he heard the childish delight in Max's voice. Kiss mommy.
09:36Kiss my mommy. Zoe had a son. Zoe was Max's mother. And suddenly, everything that hadn't
09:44made sense to Blaine suddenly did. Zoe and Matthew's sick relative was actually their son.
09:50A mother would do anything for her child. She'd sell wine late at night and condoms on the street.
09:56She'd even sell herself. The scar on Zoe's stomach must be there because she'd given birth.
10:04No wonder Sophia said that Zoe and Matthew were going to try to have children on the day of the
10:09picnic. Blaine, as a doctor, knew the best chance at a bone marrow donor for Max was through a
10:15sibling match. Suddenly, Blaine understood why Zoe was so afraid of becoming pregnant with him
10:22to save her son. She could only be pregnant with Matthew's child. As for him and her, to put things
10:29bluntly, they were merely a business relationship, a way for Zoe to pay for her son's medical
10:35expenses. Zoe had told Blaine this more than once, but he had still stubbornly hoped that what
10:41was between them could become something more once again. Blaine walked towards the parking lot,
10:47expressionless only with his hands in his pockets. He tried his best to pretend that nothing had
10:52happened, but the ice-cold aura that surrounded him betrayed his heart. Blaine, Zoe's familiar
11:00voice called out from behind him. Blaine continued to walk as if he didn't hear anything.
11:06Blaine, Zoe still chased after him, reaching out her hand to stop him. Blaine turned to face her.
11:14Why have you followed me? Aren't you afraid that your ex-husband will be jealous?
11:19I'm sorry for what I said, Zoe said nervously. You put a lot of thought into Max's gifts,
11:25and he really likes them. Don't you get tired of having to apologize to me all the time, Zoe?
11:30Blaine was growing angry. He no longer wanted to hear Zoe tell him she was sorry. Zoe took a deep
11:37breath. There were so many things she wanted to say to Blaine, but she just couldn't get the words
11:43out. Sighing, Zoe finally said, I should get back to the party. Drive carefully. As Zoe said this,
11:52she walked past Blaine and prepared to leave. Wait, Blaine's cold voice stopped. Zoe.
11:59Zoe turned around. Blaine had his hands in his pocket and a smile on his cold face.
12:05However, the smile didn't reach his eyes. Zoe, tell me, what was the purpose of getting close
12:11to me? She looked at him with a puzzled expression. Why did you approach me?
12:17Blaine repeated, narrowing his eyes at her. His voice grew colder with each step he took closer
12:23to her. Zoe suppressed a shiver. I don't understand. Zoe said in confusion. Suddenly,
12:31Blaine grabbed Zoe's wrist and shoved her up against the car behind her.
12:35His arms caged her in, so she couldn't escape as he glared down at her. Zoe gasped in shock
12:42before then returning his glare with one of her own, asking, what are you doing? I'm asking you
12:49that. Zoe Blaine, domineering. She grabbed Zoe's jaw. Don't tell me that Matthew doesn't have the
12:57money to treat your son's illness. What do you want from me? Money. Does Matthew not have enough
13:05money? Zoe bit her lips as her face turned slightly pale. She took a deep breath and nodded.
13:12Yes, Matthew has money, but we've spent so much of it already. If it weren't for the fact that he
13:18has been bearing this burden for so long, we wouldn't have survived until now. Zoe's eyes
13:24drooped. What she said was the truth. She owed Matthew a lot of money already, so much that she
13:30might not ever be able to repay him. Zoe arrogantly raised her head and smiled faintly. Her eyes were
13:37so desolate that they caused one's heart to ache. Do you still remember how I told you about my
13:43dream? Speaking of her dream, Zoe's eyes were filled with sincerity and yearning. Blaine's
13:50eyes narrowed as he listened to Zoe describe her dream slowly. Her voice was light and meticulous.
13:57I long to own a book cafe in a quiet town. When I open the window of the cafe, I can see a sea
14:03of flowers outside. The people in the town are sitting in the cafe, basking in the sun and
14:09holding books in their hands. They are enjoying their perfect moments, quietly. The beautiful
14:16sound of a piano rings in their ears and playing the piano. There is a young child, my little angel,
14:22happy and healthy as their fingers dances across the keys. At this point, Zoe's voice cracked with
14:28emotion. But dreams take money. Money. I don't have to give my son that dream life to give him
14:36the chance to even live his life. I needed money. Zoe paused. Which is why I first came to you.
14:43Episode 73. Cutting Ties, Then Now. Zoe's dreams had been shattered by cold reality.
14:52First, Catherine Dexter forced her to give up a future with Blaine, and then Zoe found herself
14:58unable to care for their son properly. There had never been enough money. Zoe worked so hard,
15:04she wanted to provide Max with the best medical treatment, so he'd get better. She wanted to
15:10buy him a piano and hire the best piano teacher. Zoe wanted to build her book cafe, so she and
15:17Max could live her dream as best as they could without Blaine. But there had never been enough
15:22money. Blaine had given Zoe financial relief for the first time in years. A dark light flashed in
15:29Blaine's black eyes as he listened to Zoe describe her dream. He remembered Zoe's dream of books and
15:36flowers well, because she had once wanted to have that life with him. And now Blaine had been cut
15:42out of this woman's dream and was nothing but a financial stepping stone so she could build her
15:48dream life without him. Blaine stared gloomily at Zoe's earnest face. Suddenly, he hated her to the
15:56core. Blaine reached out and grabbed Zoe's shoulders tightly with both hands. It felt as if his heart
16:02was finally releasing all the love and hatred that Blaine had suppressed for so many years.
16:07He wanted to punish her for being indifferent and selfish. Four years ago, Zoe was caught between two
16:15men. Four years later, the three of them were once again entangled. Zoe happily played Blaine, never
16:22seeming to care about how he felt. She never seemed to care about the damage she left in her weight.
16:28Zoe never asked if Blaine's heart would hurt too. Blaine let go of me. Let go of me. Let go.
16:37That hurts. Zoe was twitching in his arms, trying to pull away from him.
16:42Suddenly, Blaine pushed away in disgust. He looked at Zoe's deathly pale complexion and sneered.
16:48I knew you would cause pain, Zoe, but I never realized you could feel pain. Zoe stared at him
16:54tearfully. She wanted to say something, but before she could blame, spoke quickly and decisively.
17:02Zoe, this is over. From today onwards, our business relationship is concluded.
17:09She froze, trying to absorb the shock. After saying this, Blaine walked past her and opened
17:15his car door. He got in the car and slammed the door. Zoe snapped out of her daze and
17:21patted the window glass anxiously. Blaine. Blaine. Blaine ignored her. He started the car and peeled
17:29out of his parking spot. Zoe continued to shout after him before slumping to the ground, her hands
17:35covering her face as she sobbed through the rearview mirror. Blaine saw her in such a sorry
17:41state as she fell to the ground. A hint of pity flashed through his eyes, but it quickly retreated.
17:48He needed to see this for what it was. See her for who she was. He pressed the throttle flat,
17:55and the car shot out of the hospital, parking lot quickly disappearing down the road.
18:02When he was several miles away, Blaine suddenly yanked the car to the side, grinding the tires
18:07against the pavement, creating an ear-piercing sound as he hit the brakes. Blaine came to a
18:14screeching halt on the side of the road. He angrily slammed his hands down on the steering wheel,
18:20trying to release some of his rage. Damn it. Blaine's chest heaved violently,
18:26unable to conceal his burning fury and hatred. Blaine leaned his head back against the seat.
18:33His dark eyes were gloomy. Zoe and Matthew, when those two names were tied together,
18:39it was like a poison that invaded all of Blaine's rational cells. Four years ago,
18:45it seemed so hard to believe. How could Blaine ever begin to believe that Zoe,
18:50who stuck to him like a shadow, had betrayed him? The painful memories Blaine kept carefully
18:56locked away came roaring to the surface, and the memories came fast and furious.
19:02The changes had at first been subtle. Zoe was still acting like a small shadow.
19:08She shamelessly followed him around, seemingly as attached to him as he was to her.
19:14This was why it came as a shock when Blaine accidentally bumped into Zoe,
19:19holding Matthew's hand. Blaine had first asked Zoe if she was still happy with their relationship.
19:25She had blinked and laughed flirtatiously at him.
19:29What is there not to like? Is there something you don't like?
19:34I don't like it when you hold another man's hand, even for a second, Blaine replied.
19:40Zoe seemed to be in a daze. She forced out a smile. Blaine, are you jealous?
19:46No man has such a high tolerance, Blaine replied somewhat coldly. He'd only seen the two of them
19:52holding hands for a second, but it had been enough. He didn't like it. Do you think there's
19:58anything between him and me? Zoe tilted her head and asked with a smile. Nope. To this question,
20:05Blaine answered with certainty. Looking into Zoe's clear eyes as he took her into his arms,
20:11he smirked. Zoe, I don't think there is anything between you and Matthew,
20:16because I believe the person you love is me, and I won't let you change your mind so easily.
20:22Blaine had been so confident and arrogant about their love affair back then. The next time he saw
20:28Zoe and Matthew together, Blaine had come to visit her. He saw Zoe on Matthew's shoulders
20:34as he carried her outside, as they laughed and shouted. When they saw Blaine, they immediately
20:39stopped. Zoe got off Matthew's back in a panic. The guilt in her eyes made Blaine confused. It
20:47was the first time he saw cloudy light in Zoe's usually clear eyes. Matthew left them alone to
20:53talk. Do you want to explain this to me? The first to speak had been Blaine. Nothing is going on
21:00between Matthew and me. I don't have any feelings for him. Do you believe me? Zoe bit her lips and
21:08asked him. Blaine reached out his hands and took Zoe into his arms. As long as you say that you
21:14don't have any feelings for him, I will believe you. However, I do mind when you act so familiar
21:21with other men, since I will feel jealous and uncomfortable simultaneously. You need to keep
21:27your distance from him for my sake. How did Zoe answer him at that time? She didn't seem to answer.
21:35She just reached out and held him tightly, so tightly as if she was afraid he would disappear
21:40in the next moment. And then there was a third time. Blaine stood on the top balcony of the library
21:47and looked down on Zoe and Matthew, passionately kissing in the courtyard below.
21:53From the floors below him rose the dubious whistles, jeers and discussions of the other
21:59students. Wow, isn't that Zoe? Wasn't she that senior Blaine's woman? Do you think he knows?
22:08Impossible. She's not that kind of person. As he'd watched the two of them kiss, his calm eyes
22:16darkened and went cold. Blaine turned around and walked downstairs and out the library doors. Bam.
22:24Without a word, Blaine swung his fist and ruthlessly punched Matthew's handsome face,
22:30immediately separating them from each other. Zoe screamed out in fright. Matthew was bleeding
22:36from his nose while Blaine stood there glaring at her. Matthew, are you all right? Zoe was in no
22:44mood to pay attention to Blaine's sudden appearance. Instead, she anxiously rushed
22:50towards the injured Matthew. Your nose is bleeding. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. As Zoe apologized,
22:58she took out a tissue from her pocket. In a panic, she tried to wipe the blood off Matthew's face,
23:04but was violently pulled away from him by Blaine. Zoe, I want the truth this time.
23:11Blaine's voice was as cold as a frozen lake without the slightest bit of warmth.
23:16Zoe's eyes were misty, and there was a brief second to flickering light.
23:20But then she began shouting angrily at Blaine. Why did you hit him? Look what you did to his face.
23:28If there's anything you're unhappy about, then come to me. Since you've already discovered it,
23:33I won't hide it anymore. I'm the one who pursued him. I started this thing with him. This is my
23:40doing, not his. Blaine narrowed his eyes and grabbed Zoe's chin forcefully. He had a lot of
23:47strength, and the temperature of his fingertips could freeze her skin. Say what you just said
23:52again. Zoe took a deep breath and stubbornly repeated what she had said with damp eyes.
23:59I was the one who chased him first. If you want to be angry at someone, then be angry at me.
24:05I pursued him, and I admit it, but I won't allow you to hurt him again.
24:11Zoe squinted her eyes as she spoke. She raised her chin defiantly as she glared at Blaine.
24:17It wasn't fair that he was taking this out on Matthew. Blaine squeezed Zoe's chin even more
24:22tightly, but suddenly he pulled her face towards him before Zoe could react. Blaine had already
24:29bent over and fiercely kissed her. It was an aggressive kiss. Intense possessiveness and
24:36harshness filled his kiss before he suddenly pushed her away from him.
24:40The kiss was over as abruptly as it began. He glared at her silently for another long moment.
24:47Then Blaine turned around and walked away. Their relationship was over. After that day,
24:53they no longer spoke. No one dared to mention Zoe's name in front of Blaine.
24:58He kept his distance from her. He kept his distance until the day he returned to their rental
25:04and unintentionally found them lying on the bed together. Blaine sighed wearily, his chest aching.
25:12He no longer wanted to think about those terrible memories. Fate was always such a joke.
25:18Four years later, when Zoe once again burst into his life, Blaine suppressed the urge to gather any
25:24information about her. He resisted delving into her life because he was afraid that if he got
25:29in too deep, he would never be able to get out. And didn't Zoe repeatedly prove that she didn't
25:36care about him? What was the point? He would never be able to confirm her sincerity. But Zoe was
25:43Blaine's addiction. Even though he knew she wasn't good for him, she had already penetrated so deep
25:50into his veins he couldn't get her out of his system, no matter how hard he tried to shield
25:55his heart. When he heard Max calling Zoe mommy, Blaine briefly thought that this adorable child
26:01might be his son. However, in the next second, he mercilessly rejected the thought. Such a thought
26:08was only a pathetic wish. When Zoe exited the elevator back onto the seventh floor of the
26:14hospital, she saw Matthew waiting for her by the elevator doors. Zoe walked over to him.
26:21Why are you out here? I was waiting for you. Matthew gazed at Zoe's face. Are you all right?
26:28I'm fine, Zoe said. Are you really not going to tell him the truth? Matthew asked. Zoe was slightly
26:35taken aback. She pursed her lips and wrapped her arms across her middle in a protective posture.
26:41You think I'm wrong to hide it? Don't you? Matthew shook his head. No feeling sorry for her.
26:49I can't judge you. Maybe I would make the same decisions as you if this happened to me.
26:55Zoe's eyes became damp. Thank you, Matthew. She sat down in a nearby chair. I want to be alone
27:03for a bit, if that's okay. All right. Matthew knew that Zoe was in a difficult situation.
27:10He adored this woman. He doted on her. She showed such strength and courage in the face of such
27:17enormous pressure. Matthew watched her a moment longer, then turned around and quietly left so she
27:23could be alone. Zoe wrapped her arms around herself to ward off the cold numbness invading
27:29her body. Catherine dexter, this was all because of Blaine's mother. That woman had suddenly appeared
27:36in Zoe's world, threatening to strip away all of her happiness, and she had succeeded. Thank you
27:43so much for watching.
