00:00Voting is underway in Moldova as citizens decide on European Union accession and elect
00:07their new president.
00:11Moldovans are voting in a constitutional referendum that could change the long-term future of
00:16their country.
00:19Citizens are being asked whether they support an amendment of the constitution with a view
00:23to accession to the European Union after the process was formally opened last June.
00:31At the same time, Moldova is electing its president, with the incumbent Maya Sandu leading
00:36the polls.
00:39By 1pm, turnout for the presidential election was at 25.6%, higher than in 2020.
00:49President Sandu voted in Chisinau, where a number of citizens gathered at the polling
00:53station chanting, Moldova, let's vote.
00:58Turnout must be over 33% for the referendum to be considered valid, and 50% plus one of
01:05the responses must be a yes for the constitution to be amended.
