00:00Alright, what's up, MKBHD here.
00:12So I just got done spending some time outside, this is a pretty exciting one and a little
00:16bit of an exclusive.
00:17I spent some time here at the studio with some of the new electric hummers that are
00:23scheduled to come out as soon as, the earliest one I think is next year, 2022.
00:29And they are wild.
00:30So GM brought them out here to the studio, so definitely get subscribed to the studio
00:33channel if you want to see some of the behind the scenes type stuff.
00:36But these are the only working electric hummers in the world right now, just these two models
00:42right here.
00:43So the one you've seen in car shows and other videos, that's this one.
00:46The one that was at LeBron James' house in that one video, yeah, that's this one right
00:50here.
00:51So you can see there's two versions that they brought here to the studio.
00:54One is the SUV version and one is the pickup truck version.
00:58And holy smokes, they are both ridiculous with tons, literal tons of quirks and features.
01:05But you know what, speaking of tons, let me just start with the obvious.
01:09These trucks are huge, okay?
01:11They're obviously very tall and they're massive, but the truck, it's going to be crazy to see
01:16these things on the road soon because the truck version weighs over 9,000 pounds, 9,200
01:23plus pounds, I've been told.
01:24And it still goes zero to 60 in three seconds, which is like fast sports car fast.
01:33That's like performance model three fast.
01:36That's actually terrifying.
01:37So this is going to be a dual or triple motor config, depending on which one you get, but
01:41with up to a thousand horsepower to move that weight.
01:45But yeah, I guess for a Hummer, it's really not about that speed.
01:49It just happens to be capable of it from the electric torque.
01:53But it's more about how much torque you can get and how much you can tow.
01:57I don't know.
01:58I'm not a Hummer person, but I feel like that's going to be fascinating seeing all the wild
02:01stuff they've thrown into the truck to make the electric version more enticing.
02:05You may have seen my video on the Cybertruck already.
02:08That one's pretty wild.
02:09And then you may have also seen my recent hands-on with the Ford F-150 Lightning.
02:14That's kind of like on the other side of the spectrum.
02:16This to me feels kind of somewhere in between.
02:19So just so you have the context watching this, these are going to start with the dual motor
02:23lowest end version around $80,000.
02:25So pretty expensive.
02:27But the ones they brought out here are the highest end fully loaded like first edition
02:32or edition one versions.
02:33So now we're talking like $112,000 starting for that and up from there.
02:39So obviously much more expensive than the other two trucks.
02:42But for that money, yeah, you definitely get a lot of quirks.
02:46First of all, the total height and clearance of both of these vehicles is massive.
02:51So not only is it over 9,000 pounds, but the center of gravity is very high off the
02:55ground as you can tell.
02:56But, you know, it looks good on these trucks.
02:58They look very rugged and obviously they have these huge wheels, but the SUV looks pretty
03:03solid too.
03:04Very squat and wide, but still extremely solid and tough looking.
03:09The whole thing is so squat actually that you may notice that you have three windshield
03:13wipers because a single windshield wiper would actually be too tall while a smaller pair
03:18doesn't reach the whole thing.
03:19So right off the bat, that's something you don't see on pretty much any other vehicle.
03:23Then up in front of that, you got a huge water sealed power liftgate front trunk for the
03:28Hummer EV.
03:29And this has got to be the biggest front liftgate I've ever seen in person.
03:34It's absolutely massive.
03:35And while it's not a super tall front trunk, it's definitely deep enough to fit some serious
03:40luggage or storage, which again is awesome on something like a pickup truck that not
03:45every pickup truck has.
03:46I was loving that on the F-150 Lightning too.
03:49And speaking of electric vehicle stuff, check out these headlights.
03:52So this is what it'll look like when it's sitting in a garage or at a charger plugged
03:58in.
03:59The front running lights are actually multicolored so they can indicate exactly how much charge
04:03you have left and move those blue dots across the headlight area, which is pretty sick.
04:08And they also can turn orange for some pretty sweet regular blinker animations too.
04:12Honestly, I think the headlights are actually my favorite part of this truck, but wait,
04:16there's more.
04:17There's just a lot of smaller truck stuff that you'd be interested in if you're a Hummer
04:22person.
04:23Now I'm not claiming to be a Hummer expert.
04:24This is the first time I've spent significant time with a Hummer, but I learned a lot about
04:29trucks from the F-150 Lightning and a lot of this stuff is still pretty cool.
04:32Like there's a tailgate that folds down in multiple stages.
04:34So it turns into a bench or a step to get up into the trunk, whatever you want.
04:40The back window also of both the SUV and the truck can go down too.
04:45So if you want that full, fresh airflow from front to back, that's pretty sweet.
04:49And sitting inside the interior is definitely, it's very industrial, lots of rectangles and
04:55H-shaped objects as they do it.
04:58There is a screen here playing demo animations, but also still plenty of buttons and switches.
05:03This is by no means the minimalist type Cybertruck.
05:06And the best one is probably the mode dial that lets you switch between driving modes,
05:12and raise or lower the suspension on demand and switch to crab walk mode if you want to,
05:17which lets you turn all the wheels in the same direction and maneuver diagonally, which
05:21is wild.
05:22Oh, and this would also be a good time to mention this whole thing is also a convertible.
05:27So the roof is removable.
05:28It's in four parts.
05:29So they actually have to go around to each corner and unhook two latches and take the
05:33roof panels off and put them in the trunk or the front trunk or wherever you want.
05:38But yeah, then suddenly this Hummer goes from a military looking vehicle to an open air
05:44recreational type thing with the wind going through your hair and this ultra wide windshield.
05:50Other random quirks though, there is tons of storage as you've already seen, but not
05:54just in the back and the front trunk, but even in the back seats.
05:59Or how about underneath the back seats?
06:02Or how about inside the back seats?
06:06I don't think this is something I've ever seen before.
06:09Then there's also cameras all around the vehicle, around the front, around the mirrors on the
06:13side.
06:14But most interesting to me is definitely the one in the center of the spare tire on the
06:18back.
06:19It's great for your visibility.
06:20And I noticed there's a good amount of pride in this truck.
06:25Like they're clearly proud of having made it in the USA and that explains the American
06:29flag on the B pillar.
06:30And they're proud of that first moon landing, which, you know, I guess they're kind of associated
06:35with since GM made parts of the Apollo 11 moon rover, but they're really proud.
06:41They're proud of the point where they have a topographical map of the moon all over the
06:45floor of this truck.
06:46It's in the front seats, it's in the trunk and specifically in the speakers on the door,
06:52which show the sea of tranquility.
06:55And actually there's a boot print right on the spot where the first human feet were set
07:00on the moon.
07:01So they're really into it.
07:02The boot print is also on the left side of the floor of the car where your foot rests
07:06while you're driving.
07:07So you can kind of feel like an astronaut, maybe driving a version of a moon lander.
07:11But the one thing they seem the most proud of is the Hummer name, like just Hummer EV.
07:18I wasn't originally looking for this, but as I walked around the vehicle and was playing
07:23with things and poking it and prodding it and pointing a camera at it, I started realizing
07:27how many times I was seeing the word Hummer EV or just the logo carved into, etched into
07:34the car everywhere.
07:35So I ended up just counting after a while and I think I got to 31 Hummer EV logos on
07:43this truck.
07:44So let's see.
07:45I mean, you just start with the HEV on the front of each door.
07:48That's two.
07:49Then down on the wheels, there is a logo in the middle and on the outside, that's another
07:53one.
07:54So that's two Hummer logos per wheel, plus one more on the rear spare, since there's
07:58none in the middle.
08:00Then the entire headlights, of course, spell out Hummer EV.
08:03That's one more.
08:04You've got two on the steering wheel, one at the top, one at the bottom.
08:08Then one more on the passenger side dashboard.
08:11Then there's a logo under the floor mats of both of the front seats by your feet as you're
08:15sitting in it.
08:16And then another one between your feet in the back seat.
08:18And then another one in the trunk, both of the pickup truck and the SUV.
08:22And there's two in the front trunk, one up in the top, and then another one at the bottom,
08:28one on each seat.
08:29So that's four more.
08:31Then one on the doorstep on each side, and then one more on the back.
08:35And then finally, one more on each of the four tow hitches, two on the front and two
08:41on the back, all say Hummer EV.
08:44You'll never forget which car you're in.
08:45But overall, I am just really fascinated by an electric Hummer.
08:52It seems kind of like an oxymoron.
08:54I imagine the typical Hummer buyer doesn't care too much about efficiency.
08:59They probably won't care about the 350 mile max range that they're talking about or the
09:05up to 350 kilowatt fast charging, which is very impressive for when someday the infrastructure
09:10supports it.
09:12But I imagine they care more about off-roading and power and towing and capabilities and
09:18things that other truck buyers are more interested in.
09:21And yeah, check and check.
09:23Cargo space, that's another check.
09:26It's interesting.
09:27It's interesting seeing an electric Hummer.
09:28So now that you've seen Hummer EV, I'm really curious what you think.
09:31Feel free to let me know in the comments below.
09:33And if you've already also watched the videos of Ford F-150 Lightning and Cybertruck, maybe
09:39we'll get to spend some time with a Rivian soon, but I'm curious what your thoughts are
09:43on the electric truck scene that is slowly developing.
09:47I'm still very confident that every year for the next 10 straight years is going to
09:51be the most interesting year yet for electric vehicles.
09:55So we're just getting started.
09:56This was fun to take a first look.
09:58Either way, that's been it.
09:59Thanks for watching.
10:00Catch you soon in the next one.
10:02Peace.
