00:00And we said we'd start at the end, and we all knew eventually there would be a pressured
00:08Jake Bates field goal.
00:10We all knew eventually that this guy who has been working extremely hard, we've been out
00:17there at practice, tons of kicks, first guy out.
00:22Sometimes I saw he was the last guy off, but there was a lot of just work being put in
00:27to what appeared to be the thing with Jake Bates was absolute, you know, he could nuke
00:33it.
00:34He could be good out to 60.
00:35We saw it in the UFL.
00:38But it was accuracy.
00:40Can he dial it in?
00:41Can he be accurate?
00:42Right.
00:43Because this is all new to him, basically.
00:44Yep.
00:45And can he handle the stage?
00:46Like, that's another big part of this, is can you handle the stage?
00:50And they put faith in their guy.
00:53You know, when they started taking a knee and saying, we're going to play for the field
00:56goal.
00:58It wasn't like the shortest field goal ever, but it's totally makeable by an NFL kicker.
01:04Sure it is.
01:05But it's beyond the distance that you see for an extra point.
01:08And for an extra point, you see plenty of kickers missing extra points.
01:12You still had that feeling inside, like, I don't, I don't know how I trust this.
01:17Yeah.
01:18But they trusted it.
01:19Yeah.
01:20And that's, and that's what matters most.
01:21It's why you have a kicker.
01:22You have to trust your kicker on your roster to drill it from inside of 50.
01:28And when you get beyond 50, it's, it's less of a certainty, but today's NFL, it seems
01:33like it's almost a certainty.
01:34Now, anything inside of 55.
01:36They treated that situation like they had faith in their kicker.
01:39Yes, they did.
01:40They treated that situation like they had, you know, peak Mason Crosby or somebody like
01:45they had a guy that they knew would make that kick.
01:48That's how they treated this situation.
01:50Okay.
01:51We got all the yardage we need.
01:53We made it down to the 26.
01:55We're 44 yard field goal.
01:58We know our guy's going to make it.
02:00That's how they treated it.
02:01And until you see him in that situation, look, they, they acted like they knew they had enough.
02:09And certainly it's not about the distance, but the further out you are, the, the less
02:16angle you know, you have, you have, you have to be more perfect.
02:21The further flight of the ball, you know, if it's off by a couple of degrees, one way
02:25or the other, it's going to sail wide.
02:28So you know, the further the ball has to travel, the greater chance for him to miss right or
02:33left.
02:34The distance isn't the issue was, are you, you know, and, and it's your pressure.
02:38Like that's, that's a pressure kick.
02:40That's not a gimme kick by any stretch of the imagination.
02:43On the road, hostile environment for the win is perfect conditions, but you expect a good
02:49NFL kicker to make that, that kick.
02:53And as we felt our way through this situation and navigated it, Jake Bates came through
02:59and the lions acted as if they had their guy.
03:04And based upon this, it looks like they might, I mean, you know, he's, he's been great.
03:09And some of the extra points you're like, was that good?
03:13He's had, he's had more than a few extra points where they have been sailing and mostly
03:20it seems like wide, right?
03:22But they sneak through the upper, he just tucks it right inside the upright and it's
03:24good.
03:25And I'm sure his plan is to go right down the middle on every kick, but it feels like
03:29on somebody's kicks, like it's about velocity more than anything else.
03:33So if I kick it hard enough and fast enough, the distance isn't going to catch up to me
03:39because the ball's just going to shoot through the uprights before it has a chance to go
03:41squirrelly.
03:43But he's been, he's been money.
03:45He's been absolute money this year.
03:47Was he 10 for 10 now with field goals kind of season?
03:50Yep.
03:51I think he missed one extra point maybe.
03:54Yep.
03:55But he's been fantastic.
03:56And what a situation we put into the test your metal.
04:00Now hysterically, I just did something I've done all the time and it's the Houston Oilers
04:04moved to Tennessee.
04:05They play Tennessee this weekend, not Houston.
04:07I mean, if you send a couple of weeks, I still make that mistake, but it's kind of like Houston,
04:12Houston Astros being in the American league.
04:14There's some things I'm never getting used to, but sorry, they don't play Texas for a
04:18couple of weeks, but that will be a big game when they get there.
04:22But don't put the cart in front of the horse.
04:23I got Tennessee this weekend at home at one o'clock, but anyway, back to the, back to
04:27the Bates thing.
04:28Like that's a, that's a big kick for the game, but it's also a big kick for the season.
04:34Like the next time he's out there, he'll know he can do it.
04:39You know, there's, there's short-term prognosis and there's long-term prognosis and there's
04:44short-term solutions, but there's long-term solutions.
04:47I feel better about Jake Bates today and I think all of Detroit feels better about Jake
04:51Bates today.
04:52And he got a game ball and he was up there in front of the team and I always think it's
04:55weird for kickers because they're just cut from a different cloth.
04:59They don't, they're not the same.
05:02They're not anywhere close to what the rest of the team, their job is, what they do, what
05:06they look like.
05:07And he got up there and he said, Hey man, thank you for the opportunity and great job
05:10by the offense to get it down there and the whole, the whole snap spot operation.
05:14Like he thanked everybody in the locker room, but that's a big moment for Jake Bates and
05:19that's a big moment for this Lyon season is to have him come through with a pressure kick.
05:24Yeah, no, it was big.
05:25Glad to see it.
05:26I had a knot in my, my stomach watching the game in the last five minutes of the game
05:30and please God, get the ball back in an opportunity to win.
05:33But it was interesting watching how golf handled things.
05:38He really did have this.
05:39Can I make one final point on Bates?
05:41Yeah.
05:42He had a great quote afterwards and it just made me laugh.
05:45He said, 18 months ago I was selling bricks in Houston, gotta make a living.
05:52Hey, kicking bricks.
05:55I don't know.
05:56I don't know what, I don't know what that career, how that trajectory, that career trajectory
06:00was taken.
06:01You're selling bricks.
06:02There's a lot of damn brick salesmen out there, but I mean, okay, sell them bricks
06:08in Houston.
06:09So you need a pallet of bricks.
06:11Chicago brick?
06:12Yeah.
06:13Bates!
06:14Right?
06:15Who talking to you?
06:18Bates brick sales.
06:19Right.
06:20Bates, you back from the USFL yet?
06:23Cause we, we got, we got a pallet back here, man.
06:26I'll get it.
06:27Need a high low?
06:28Need a high low in aisle three.
06:31Selling bricks in Houston.
06:33In golf.
06:34You were saying about golf.
06:35The, the sense of calm that he had on his face going into that last drive.
06:38It was, you know, we've heard the old Aaron Rodgers era and, you know, when he said relax
06:43the whole bit and spell that out and, and you understand that.
06:47But when you see it from golf, it was like, I firmly believe it.
06:52This guy has been playing at an elite level now for several weeks.
06:58Tap the brakes.
06:59He threw three incompletions.
07:00I know.
07:02It's amazing how accurate he's been over the last three weeks.
07:05He's been playing at an elite level and you know me, I don't like to throw the word elite
07:09out there because I think it gets misused all the time.
07:11Elite means the top two or three in the league.
07:14There's difference between being elite and playing at an elite level, which is perfectly
07:18fine.
07:19He is playing at an elite level over the last three weeks and I'm loving it.
07:24He's throwing the ball downfield for all those naysayers out there.
07:27He can't throw deep.
07:28Okay.
07:29Tell me that again.
07:30I was watching the last few weeks and he's throwing perfect passes downfield to receivers.
07:34The touchdown pass to Amin Ra was, was a thing of beauty.
07:38It was right in the stride.
07:39Boom.
07:40No, no hassle at all.
07:41That was against, they showed a seven man front.
07:45I don't know that he brought Tim Patrick in motion to have him pick up the extra pass
07:50rusher that was not accounted for or if that was part of the original design.
07:54It doesn't matter, but the guys up front on that pass to Amin Ra, the guys up front gave
07:58him time to give his great receivers a chance to beat man coverage.
08:04And that's exactly what not only Amin Ra did, if you saw Jameson Williams was wide open
08:09as well on that play and he made a great throw on a play that was screaming, you're going
08:15to be under heavy duress.
08:18And he wasn't.
08:19And he, and he wasn't, and he was given the opportunity by the, the offensive line and
08:25Tim Patrick.
08:26And I think David Montgomery was the, was the running back that picked up an extra rusher.
08:30It was seven on seven.
08:32They crowded the wine and, and right before that snap, Greg Olson said, look at this.
08:36They got everybody in the line of scrimmage.
08:38They got to figure out who's going to come and who's going to drop into coverage.
08:41And they all rushed the passer, all seven of them.
08:44The lions were prepared for it.
08:46I mean, that was, that was Flores versus Ben Johnson and a lot, and Ben Johnson's guys
08:52executed it.
08:53That was a thing of beauty.
08:55Yeah.
08:56There were four straight drives that went for touchdowns after what the first two drives
08:59were three and out, I think.
09:01And you're feeling not so good about this team to get down 10, nothing before you can
09:04blink.
09:05And then they go on a run bleeding into the second half too, which makes you feel so much
09:11better.
09:12Hey, if they're going to score, let's answer the score.
09:13And they did.
09:15And then things started to slip a little bit.
09:17Then they trail in the game with a few minutes left.
09:20But again, cool, calm, confident, Jared Goff leads the team down the field with some big
09:27time passes, big rush coming at them.
09:30He'll wait, wait, wait.
09:31He had the one play where it looked like a Grenard was going to strip sack him up.
09:37That was a huge play.
09:38I'm just going to step up and throw this and completely pass this downfield to St. Brown.
09:44Yesterday was a St. Brown day.
09:47And I was glad to see it because we hadn't seen one in a while.
09:50He had a whole bunch of hundred yard games last year.
09:51I think he had one going into the game this year and then comes up with the one yesterday.
09:55It was just big play after big play.
09:57You need something.
09:58Where's 14th area is first down next.
10:01It was a brilliant thing to watch.
