00:00Hi, welcome back to my channel, in this video, I will explain the ending of The Lying Life
00:04of Adults, so, let's begin!
00:07Netflix's The Lying Life of Adults is a coming-of-age story of a young girl named Giovanna.
00:13The show picks up at a crucial point in her life when things start to change drastically.
00:18The world that was built around her by her parents starts to come down as her beliefs
00:22are challenged after meeting new people.
00:25She learns something different from everyone, while also realizing that, at times, adults
00:30don't know any better than she does.
00:32In the end, she makes a choice that changes her life forever.
00:37Here's what it means, spoilers follow!
00:40Giovanna has been failing at school and her father worries that she is starting to look
00:44like her aunt, Vittoria.
00:46Giovanna knows that Vittoria is not seen in a good light by her family, and is so estranged
00:52that her face in all of the pictures has been scratched off.
00:56This sparks her curiosity and she decides to meet Vittoria, despite her parents' wish.
01:01Soon, it becomes clear to her that her parents and Vittoria live in two very different worlds,
01:07and this is where her story takes a decisive turn.
01:10Along with Giovanna, we also follow the difficult relationship between her parents, both of
01:15whom fall disgracefully in her eyes.
01:18The show also explores Giovanna's relationship with Angela and Ida, two sisters, with whom
01:23Giovanna grew up and shares a close bond.
01:26Things get a little messy between them when Giovanna's father and their mother's affair
01:30come to light.
01:32Further, Giovanna finds herself attracted to a young man named Roberto, but the situation
01:37is complicated by the fact that he is already with someone else.
01:41Why does Giovanna leave the bracelet at Rosario's place?
01:45Many things come and go in The Lying Life of Adults as we explore Giovanna's story.
01:50In all of this, the bracelet that she was supposed to have received from Vittoria as
01:54a child becomes a pivotal object.
01:57It is first mentioned by Vittoria when she reveals that she'd mailed it to her parents
02:01with the note that it should be given to Giovanna when she grows up.
02:05Her father says that Vittoria never sent any bracelet, but then, it turns out that he'd
02:10given it to Costanza.
02:12The revelation of Andrea's affair upends Giovanna and her mother Nella's life.
02:17Costanza gives the bracelet to Giovanna, but the girl finds it difficult to get attached
02:22to the thing that was worn by her father's mistress all these years.
02:26Still, she keeps it because it was supposed to be her in the first place.
02:30Later, she discovers that the bracelet initially belonged to Giuliana's grandmother.
02:36Her father, Enzo stole it and gave it to Vittoria's mother as a gift.
02:41It was then passed on to Vittoria, who held it close to her heart because it was a reminder
02:45of Enzo's love for her.
02:47For Giuliana, the bracelet, in the beginning, meant a connection to the past of her family.
02:53It was an heirloom that was passed down to her by her aunt, a connection that she never
02:57had the chance to explore.
03:00It was something that she was supposed to have but was kept from her, much like the
03:03idea of freedom, which is further explored in the story.
03:08But as she starts to unpeel the many layers surrounding this one object, she realizes
03:12that much like everything else, the story built around it is nothing more than a fabricated
03:17story, a lie.
03:18The bracelet came into Giovanna's family as a lie.
03:22Vittoria further fed into it by attaching a meaning to it in the form of Enzo's memories.
03:27She told Giovanna that she only ever loved and had sex with Enzo.
03:32Later, however, Giovanna discovers that her aunt had lied about the sex part.
03:37The meaning of the bracelet is further degraded after it becomes a symbol of another lie,
03:42her father's affair.
03:44Even though he was already married and had a family, he gave the bracelet, which was
03:48important to him because it belonged to his mother, to the woman he was having an affair
03:52with.
03:53While, in the beginning, Giovanna had connected the bracelet to something good and precious,
03:58it later becomes a symbol of all the lies that the adults around her had fabricated
04:02and propagated.
04:04The importance of the bracelet is further diminished when Giovanna discovers that Vittoria
04:09is leaving the family house and moving to the posh neighborhood to work for a rich lady.
04:14When she first met her aunt, Giovanna got the impression that Vittoria was above the
04:18bourgeois lifestyle that her father chased his entire life.
04:23Vittoria impressed her young niece with her ideology, which influenced Giovanna's choices,
04:28her decisions, and even her relationship with her parents.
04:32But in the end, it turns out that the ideals that Vittoria passed on to Giovanna were a
04:36lie too.
04:38When the time came, Vittoria let go of her beliefs rather easily, and this convinces
04:43Giovanna that all adults are living one or the other form of a lie.
04:47In an act of defiance, Giovanna sleeps with Rosario.
04:51She knew how much Vittoria disliked him and she knew how disapproving her parents would
04:55be of her act.
04:57But for her, their judgment is not something that she cares about or values anymore.
05:02In echoing this feeling, she leaves the bracelet at his place.
05:07This act establishes the fact that she is now ready to cut off from the adults and move
05:11on with her life as she sees fit.
05:14Why do Giovanna and Ida run away?
05:17In the final scene of the show, we find Giovanna and Ida packing their bags and taking a bus
05:21out of town, ready to embark upon a new path in their lives.
05:26For Giovanna, this feels like the natural step, especially considering how she has been
05:30disappointed by every single adult in her life.
05:34After meeting Vittoria, the perfect world in which she grew up was torn apart, as she
05:39saw the lies and hypocrisies of her parents and others like them.
05:44But then, she sees that people like Vittoria are living their own lies too.
05:49Giovanna was particularly influenced by Roberto, who made her feel seen.
05:54She became infatuated with him and it wasn't just the way he looked at her or talked to
05:58her.
05:59It was also his ideology and how strongly he seemed to stand by his ideals.
06:04But by the end, Giovanna realizes that he, too, is building a facade around himself.
06:10He might seem perfect and sorted out on the outside, but inside, he is just like every
06:14other adult.
06:16In Ida's monologue at the end, we discover that she too has gone through a similar journey.
06:22Much like Giovanna, she felt like she wasn't loved, especially when she felt left out by
06:26her and Angela.
06:28The divorce of her parents after the affair with her mother mirrored the situation in
06:31Giovanna's house, putting both of them in a similar state of mind.
06:36Like Giovanna, Ida also finds herself disillusioned by the adults around her and doesn't want
06:41to live under the shadow of their expectations and disappointments anymore.
06:46Instead of walking on the path laid out by them, she wants to create one of her own.
06:51Giovanna and Ida's arc also parallels their sexual encounters.
06:55Both of them explore it as an act of defiance against their parents and indulge with the
06:59men that would be considered unacceptable by the adults around them.
07:04For both of them, their first experience is unpleasant and is approached like a chore
07:08that needs to be done to cross into adulthood and leave behind their childhood days.
07:14It is a rite of passage, just a formality before they can start the journey of their
07:18new lives.
07:20Considering the many similarities in their stories, it makes sense that the two of them
07:24would end up running away together.
07:26Having seen the limited world around them, they now want to experience what's outside
07:30of their town, without being controlled or influenced by any adult.
07:35This is them taking control of their lives and leaving behind the lies that have dictated
07:39their past.
07:41That's all for now folks.
07:42I would appreciate it if you could give the video a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel
