US filmmaker Tim Burton's exhibition opens in London

'Edward Scissorhands' and 'Wednesday' costumes to 'Beetlejuice' and 'Corpse Bride' sketches, an exhibition opening in London on Oct. 25, 2024, delves into the fantastical world of US filmmaker Tim Burton. Held at the Design Museum, 'The World of Tim Burton' showcases a range of objects, including some of the director’s early childhood sketches to items from his latest productions. On show are drawings and figurines from Burton films like 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' and 'The Corpse Bride' as well as costumes from his movies including 'Sleepy Hollow' and television series 'Wednesday.' The exhibition looks at how Burton’s original sketches have been brought to screen as well as his collaborations with longtime partners, including costume designer, Colleen Atwood. Personal artwork is also on display. The exhibition has toured around the world for over a decade and the show at the Design Museum, running until April 21, 2025, is its final stop.

01:10So The World of Tim Burton is an exhibition that celebrates the life and work of one of the most fascinating directors of our time, Tim Burton.
01:20It's an exhibition that brings together works from his films, you know, films like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, but also really deep dives into the process behind the artistry.

02:00It's an exhibition that brings together works from his films, you know, films like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, but also really deep dives into the process behind the artistry of Tim Burton.
02:10So many people say, oh, you know a Tim Burton film.
02:38So many people say, oh, you know a Tim Burton film when you see one.
02:41And it goes beyond, as I say, those kind of visual motifs and much deeper into a process and into a craft.
02:48And really that's what this exhibition places at its centre.
02:51And in fact, Tim's own artist studio is literally at the beating heart of the gallery.
02:58So again, this is the very start.
03:00And this is the beginning of the round.
03:02And then when you leave, you've just got a shot.
03:05Yes.
03:06I'm trying round like the real idea.
03:09Not just that.
03:27One thing that might be lesser known about Tim is his vast contribution to stop motion animation.
03:39He trained as a character animation designer at Disney and has produced four beautiful stop motion films, Corpse Bride, Frank and Weenie, Nightmare Before Christmas.
03:51And we've got lovely armatures from those films, from his puppet makers.
03:57Again, kind of sketches and drawings that show the very detailed and handmade process behind stop motion.
04:21He's sort of sketched and drew and painted voraciously, has done his whole life.
04:37He'll often be seen with a watercolour kit in his breast pocket.
04:41The idea of a kind of character, which is central to this show, is really important for Tim.
04:49He sketches characters almost like they're friends.

05:56First, the filmmaking is a design practice.
05:57Obviously, as a design curator, that's something that I, you know, the relationship between design
06:03and creative practice is like my bread and butter.
06:06But also, you know, as the kind of celebration of the misunderstood outcast that this exhibition
06:12presents, I hope, will resonate with individuals who maybe feel a little bit outside of something.
06:19That there are deeply personal modes of creative expression that one could look to for a sort
06:25of light relief or a sort of escape.
