00:00Previously, the Blockheads started tackling the biggest space this season.
00:05Managed chaos.
00:06I've never seen so many trucks, so many guys, so many pieces of machinery and equipment
00:11operating in the one place.
00:13Yep, the landscapers have arrived, and our team's big backyards have some big budgets.
00:19We have $89,000.
00:21$95,000.
00:22$105,000.
00:23And tensions are running high.
00:27You guys were all there.
00:29You can't say nobody else.
00:30I said, what do you guys do?
00:32It was a conversation that I just didn't want to be a part of anymore.
00:35Don't need to deal with wires, my God.
00:38While Maddie was driven to a private cry, House 5's landscaper has very publicly put
00:44a lot of noses out of joint.
00:46It's a block.
00:47We've got to do it.
00:48I just need to get this machine gone.
00:49You've seen there's a few things, some obstacles.
00:50Just the machine.
00:51Don't be obtuse.
00:52It's not all about you.
00:53Dean, I'm doing one.
00:54Block it in.
00:55Block it in.
00:56Gary says to do it.
00:57I understand, but you've got to understand, five houses.
01:03But one house is getting left behind.
01:05They've turned around the delivery for the timber, for the steel, for everything that
01:10we ordered from Minotown.
01:11Because of the congestion in the driveway.
01:13Deliveries affect us at the back of the block at the moment.
01:16Nothing's getting through.
01:17Tonight, Shelley and I pay a visit to the backyards.
01:20Hello.
01:21How are we?
01:22Isn't it nice to be outside?
01:23There's some cash up for grabs.
01:25Whoever gets closest to their depreciation amount wins how much?
01:31$7,895.10.
01:32Wow.
01:33Woo.
01:34And things continue to fall apart for Carly and Brad.
01:35Brad, you've got the wrong mix here, mate.
01:36You need core fill.
01:37Now, that is a disaster.
01:38Morning, all.
02:05Morning all. Come on around. Listen up. Be mindful. Stay off the new driveways. Share
02:13space. Stay safe. Be nice to each other. Enjoy the day.
02:17It's been a tumultuous week so far for Maddie and Charlotte, but as they approach the mid
02:22point of landscaping their 448 square metre backyard, they are starting to pick up the
02:27pieces.
02:28Charlotte, where's the backyard at?
02:29Maybe we sweep it first.
02:31Yeah.
02:32Um...
02:33We had a slab poured yesterday. We, um, hope...
02:39Oh!
02:40Sorry.
02:41We're obviously, hopefully, um, making our barbeque today. Barbeque kitchen.
02:48While the girls hope to get their barbeque cooking, over at house three, how are things
02:53looking for Ricky and Hayden, who have been tasked with landscaping the second largest
02:58backyard at 488 square metres.
03:01A little bit daunting, but nothing the boys can't handle.
03:04How you going?
03:06Good.
03:07Tell us about your landscaping team. Who are they and how did you get onto them?
03:11R&H Landscaping. They're my officers. We're going to give them a chance. I heard they're
03:15guns at life, though.
03:16There's still no fence up.
03:17Oh, there won't be a fence up for two days.
03:20No, don't say that.
03:22No, seriously.
03:23On the modular wall between Brad and Kylie's house and our house, we've got graphic going
03:27up, but the wall's not up yet, so we've got to plan for the Curcio brothers to tile to
03:33cement sheet and do it in pieces.
03:37We tile a section.
03:38That's it.
03:39There and there.
03:40That's it.
03:41And then we'll just put something through.
03:43While Ricky and Hayden are taking charge of their own landscaping duties, things couldn't
03:47be more different for house five, who are tackling this week's biggest backyard, a 552 square
03:53metre behemoth.
03:56Good morning.
03:58Good morning.
03:59In terms of being in charge, Troy is definitely 100% in charge. He's almost taken the contested
04:05position from me and Mimi this week.
04:09I just need to dig a trench and dig six holes. That's all I need to do with the excavator
04:16today. Everything else I can do by hand.
04:19Unfortunately, man, I'm tied up down here. I've got to get this done for them.
04:22No, I understand.
04:23You're miles in front of the rest of them. If you need it done a bit sooner, man, you've
04:27got to get it past management.
04:28No, I'm not going to. No, no, no. I'm not going to worry about that. All good.
04:32Troy likes to push things to the very limit. And I like that.
04:39We're going to have to probably have to dig this trench by hand through here to a leaf
04:43behind those rocks so we can at least then get all this steel in and start getting these
04:47garden beds in.
04:50Yeah, I know, but the problem is I don't know if they're going to come back here with the
04:55machine.
04:56While Troy rages against the lack of machines, over at House 2, Grant is going through the
05:01correct channels to get the helping hands he needs to get the job done on his 403 square
05:07metre backyard.
05:08Not to start your day any earlier, we left the pizza oven in the back of that van because
05:13it was too late to get it out last night. We grabbed the manor to lift it off. Is that
05:18right?
05:19It's 300 kilos.
05:20We're going to have to because we need to get that van out.
05:22So you could be there, didn't you?
05:24No, no, all good. We'll come down in a minute. I'll just get the manor to out in a minute
05:28and I'll come and pick it up.
05:29By today, we've had most of our hardscapes achieved. We've got a bit of decking to go
05:34down still, but all in all, we're in a good position.
05:37So what are your plans for today?
05:39I need to, I've got like 40,000 downlights in my garage that I haven't used that I need
05:44to return to Beacon to then get money to spend for the front yard because I'm broke.
05:50Speaking of broke, all the way down the other end of a congested block site, Brad is in
05:55a fragile state.
05:56Um, in line with the patio would be good. Or wherever you can, wherever you can f***
06:01fit them, mate.
06:03It's landscaping on Thursday. I don't really know how things are tracking. It's not my
06:11forte. I've sort of left the landscaping up to Brad. Brad seems stressed.
06:17I need that van gone.
06:19But when they move the pizza oven, it'll move.
06:21Please is also nice.
06:23F*** now.
06:24Despite having the smallest backyard to landscape at 378 square metres, Brad is beginning to
06:29get overwhelmed by the task at hand.
06:32What have you got coming today?
06:34Ah, we've got soil, steppers, concrete, form ply. What else was there? I don't know, there's
06:39a couple other things.
06:40Yeah, you just need everything to run smoothly so you can get your stuff done.
06:44Yeah. Yeah, we've been treading water and we're really far behind.
06:49While Brad hopes for a caffeine-fuelled comeback, I've got walk-arounds today with Shell.
06:56She should be here any tick of the clock.
07:00Oh, here we go.
07:01What?
07:04Here we go.
07:14There she is. She's got the artist's trailer on.
07:17Stop laughing. Look out, Frankie. Don't you laugh at me.
07:21Yeah, no. Tell you what.
07:23Shell.
07:24Hello. Hey, Frankie.
07:25You're like driving a prime mover.
07:27Not that bad.
07:29You must be very stressed.
07:31It handles beautifully.
07:32Yes.
07:33But I've got precious cargo on board. Of course, a trady treat trailer.
07:36Hey, listen, we haven't got time to unload this because we've got lots to do.
07:39It's backyard week.
07:41Hey, Dunk.
07:42Mates, how are you, brother?
07:43G'day, Scotty.
07:44G'day.
07:45Can you hand out the Tim Tams and the Bickies from the trady treat trailer?
07:49Oh, I'd love to.
07:50Well, why wouldn't I?
07:51Yes, OK. I'll leave you in charge of that. We've got to go.
07:53My job here is done.
07:54I can't promise there'll be any Bickies left.
07:56No, that's right.
07:57Give them out, mate. Give them to everyone.
07:58OK.
08:00Oh, here we go.
08:02You look like a chicken crimpy.
08:04Scotch finger.
08:05What about the Tim Tams?
08:07Well, everyone loves the Tim Tams, eh?
08:10There you go, guys.
08:11Hey!
08:12Hello.
08:13Hi.
08:14What are you doing in there?
08:15We're cleaning.
08:16Oh, hallelujah.
08:18Yeah.
08:19We're cleaning.
08:20After your rousing last week, it's getting done.
08:22It is.
08:23Well, it needs to be done because next week we're going to have to have that room empty.
08:27You're going to have to have the entire house finished.
08:29Yes.
08:30Cleaned.
08:31Walk away.
08:32Throw the keys.
08:33See you at auction.
08:34That's how it works next week.
08:35Exactly.
08:36So we're on to it now.
08:37How are you feeling about how it's going back here?
08:39We're coming along.
08:41We've had a few setbacks.
08:43A few people working on top of each other.
08:45So, girls, can you just run me through the backyard without us going there?
08:49Because it's way too big for us to get to all of it.
08:51Starting at that end, we have basketball court.
08:54Yeah, we have a dream court.
08:55A dream court.
08:56Yeah, we have a dream court.
08:57A spiral staircase.
08:59Plunging.
09:00A plunging.
09:01A door-facing deck.
09:02Yes, we have our big deck with a barbecue, dining table, sitting area, fire pit, and a pizza oven.
09:12It's huge.
09:13It's huge.
09:14Yeah, it is pretty big.
09:15Who's your landscaping team?
09:16Rye Corps.
09:17Rye Corps.
09:18So Corey and Ryan from Rye Corps.
09:20They did Eliza and Liberty's last year.
09:21Right.
09:22Okay, great.
09:23So they know what they're up to.
09:24They know what they're up against.
09:25They know what they're up against.
09:26That's true.
09:27That's true.
09:28Apparently last year they only had two of them, so they've brought a slightly bigger team this time.
09:30Right, and you've given them a good budget.
09:32Well, yes, and they're probably spending it all here.
09:34Yeah, your budget's a little bit off.
09:37Yeah, it's not looking good, is it?
09:39$75,000 budgeted for landscaping front and back, and I knew that backyard would take majority of that.
09:48We might be able to throw a little bit into the mix, can't we?
09:52There's old Bradley Beer coming around.
09:53Yes, we've got an offering of some cash.
09:57Do you know what your depreciation schedule is?
09:59Do you know what that is?
10:00It's every nail, screw, bolt, sheet, door, fruit bowl, artwork, all on a schedule,
10:10so the new buyer can have a look at that and go,
10:13oh, that's such and such off my tax every year if I decide to rent this house.
10:19So tomorrow, Brad Beer, who's a mate of ours from BMT.
10:23These properties have in the vicinity of $5 million spent each, and most of those are deductible,
10:31and over the life or 40 years of a lot of these things,
10:35most of that $5 odd million that's spent will get claimed as depreciation deductions.
10:41Pretty good.
10:43He's coming here, and he will work out exactly.
10:47Down to the dollar.
10:48Down to the cent.
10:49Down to the cent what has been spent on this house and the other house and the other house,
10:54and then you guys are going to do the same,
10:58and whoever gets closest to their depreciation amount wins how much?
11:04Oh, $7,895.10.
11:08Wow.
11:09Very precise.
11:10Which would be very handy.
11:11That would be very handy.
11:12That would mean we'd probably be able to finish front yard week,
11:15Unless we win that, we will be laying some grass ourselves.
11:18I reckon you guys could be really, really good at this.
11:21I think this might be where your strength is.
11:23It came down to dollars and cents last year.
11:25We've done this quite a few times.
11:27How much time do we have to figure this out?
11:29Oh, about 24 hours.
11:30Oh, okay, 24 hours.
11:31Tomorrow.
11:32That could be fun.
11:37Tonight, we're going to get this Excel spreadsheet out.
11:39Yes, go back through every single invoice.
11:42I mean, you've got plenty of time on your hands.
11:44Yeah, like a day.
11:45Yeah.
11:46Amongst everything else.
11:47It's not like we're doing anything else anyway.
11:48Get to it.
11:49Enough time spent here.
11:50There you go.
11:52Bye.
11:53Yikes.
11:54We really need that money because it was like $7,951.10 or something.
11:59Close, $7,895.10.
12:02Oh, dang it.
12:03Oh, well, close enough.
12:05That number.
12:06And, yeah, we were like, we desperately need that money.
12:09Like, that could be the difference of us finishing our front yard.
12:14I just need you to tell me where this gate is.
12:31Shelley and I are making our way around the backyards.
12:33Next stop, house two.
12:35Stepping out onto their undercover dining and barbecue area,
12:39their backyard will consist of a pizza oven off to the left,
12:42which then leads down to their fire pit.
12:45At the opposite end of the yard, they'll have their pool,
12:48sun deck and secondary seating area.
12:51And we're meeting up here with Grant right here next to the fireplace.
12:55There's so many elements to these backyards, isn't there?
12:58It's a bit overwhelming.
12:59It was at the start, yeah.
13:02So much to spend in a big space.
13:04But, no, we think what Courtney and I wanted to do was create sort of
13:07rooms and sections where people can break out within the backyard.
13:10It's the same sort of idea as the house.
13:12There's a lot to spend and you're worried about your budget, aren't you?
13:14Very, very worried.
13:15Yes, you should be.
13:16I think we've actually been talking about landscape budget for, oh,
13:19a good ten weeks now.
13:20I reckon 20 years, Shelley.
13:22Yeah, yeah, probably.
13:24Every year, if you watch the show, you know, don't you?
13:26You do.
13:27There's no money for landscape.
13:28No.
13:29How much did you reckon you had?
13:30So we had about $80,000 with our win at the end of last week,
13:36after our win on Sunday.
13:37That was with the Freedom money.
13:39We'll probably put about $50,000 into the backyard.
13:43Yeah.
13:44And we'll need $5,000 at least for the garage,
13:47just to get that sheeted and do what we want to do in there.
13:50Yeah.
13:51And then probably have $25,000 for the front yard.
13:53So what's going in through this section?
13:55So, yeah, we've got basically behind this area,
13:57we've got the secluded master bedroom.
13:59That's the travertine.
14:00Travertine, beautiful.
14:01Yeah, all that.
14:02We've got the deck.
14:03We wanted a dedicated turf area for the kids.
14:06Right.
14:07So this will be the turf area.
14:08It sort of flows in front of the deck there.
14:09Yes.
14:10We wanted to frame this side of the yard.
14:11So I've got the cypress pine arbors in 115 by 115.
14:15So they'll come, four of them will come through here.
14:17They'll lead you through to get to the pool.
14:19Yeah.
14:20We've got 300.
14:21There's all that work to do there with the cypress pine
14:23coming in as well.
14:24Yep, yep.
14:25And then you've got to put all this deck down.
14:26Got to put this deck down.
14:27There's 360 lineal metres here.
14:29Yes.
14:30That we need to put down.
14:31Plants will run through here.
14:32Yes.
14:34And then we will have our outdoor kitchen running along there.
14:38So that's all built in.
14:39All Barbie and sink and fridge.
14:40Yep, matching cabinetry to the kitchen.
14:42Sinks there.
14:43Yep.
14:44We've got our pizza oven going on the back of here.
14:46Oh my goodness me.
14:47Yeah.
14:48Can I just say that the craftsmanship of that set is absolutely incredible.
14:54You're good on all your hard surfaces.
14:56Yes.
14:57But is your bride taking care of furnishings and is that where she is now?
15:00Yes, she's over at Freedom.
15:02Spending all the Freedom dollars they gave us last week.
15:04Yes.
15:05So yeah, we've got a fair bit of furniture coming.
15:07Oh, you've got the outdoor furniture coming, all that sort of.
15:09And she's picking all that up now.
15:10She's picking all that up.
15:11And then she's going to come back and start digging holes?
15:12She'll start screwing deck, digging holes, painting fences, mate.
15:15Of course she will.
15:16Yeah, of course.
15:17The wind last week must have been wonderful.
15:18A bit of a getaway.
15:19It was.
15:20A chance to break free.
15:21What a dinner.
15:22It was an incredible dinner.
15:23Nice to have a penguin under your wing too basically, isn't it?
15:25Yeah, lucky.
15:26Happy days.
15:27If you get this finished, you'll be coming for tea with me again I reckon.
15:30There you go.
15:31There you go.
15:32I really hope so.
15:33Scotty says he's always, I don't know whether he's just saying it, but he says he's always
15:36a fan of what we produce and it could be absolutely pulling my leg.
15:40I know it could be terrible, but he says it every week.
15:43He doesn't seem like the man that lies.
15:45No.
15:46It's time to stop believing in you.
15:50Ricky and Hayden's large wraparound lawn is the hero of their backyard and will provide
15:54ample space for kids to play all sports as well as leaving room for their large swing
15:59set.
16:00At the far end, they'll have their large plunge pool and deck area.
16:04It's a big project, so it's high time Shelly and I met the ambitious landscaping team behind
16:10this backyard.
16:11Hello boys.
16:12Hey, how you going?
16:13Oh, good day mate.
16:14Ricky and Hayden.
16:15From R&H Landscaping.
16:16Nice to meet you.
16:17Great to have you on the block.
16:18First time around.
16:19Nice to see you.
16:20Terrific.
16:21So what have you got planned for the boys' backyard?
16:22Look, we've got big plans.
16:23They gave you a healthy budget obviously.
16:24They did.
16:25They did.
16:26Yep.
16:27I've heard, boys, be careful.
16:28I've heard they're bad players.
16:29No, they're ripping blokes actually.
16:30Really handsome and really intelligent.
16:31Yeah, they are.
16:32We've got big plans for them.
16:33We've got nice decking space around the pool.
16:34What we're doing is, because this is going to be a family holiday home, we're thinking
16:35grass is king.
16:36Yep.
16:37So the most amount of square metres of turf that we can put down for kids to be playing
16:38on, backyard cricket, kicking soccer balls, we reckon that's going to be the key.
16:39So there's all of that there grass.
16:40We've got 200 square metres of turf that we're laying.
16:41Wow.
16:42God, it just keeps going.
16:43Doesn't it?
16:44Doesn't it?
16:45That's why you have 200 squares of turf.
16:46But that's amazing.
16:47Look at all that beautiful sun coming in this side.
16:48Yeah.
16:49And then we've got a pool.
16:50That's fantastic.
16:51Awesome.
16:52I love that.
16:53That's fantastic.
16:54It's a great place to be to be able to just sit down and relax and relax and take a break
16:55and have a drink or a drink.
16:56It's a great place to be.
16:57It's a great place to be.
16:58There's a lot of things here.
16:59We've got a beautiful view.
17:00That's awesome.
17:01We've got a nice view from the roof.
17:02I love that.
17:03That's why you have 200 squares of turf.
17:06But that's amazing.
17:07Like, look at all that beautiful sun coming in this side.
17:09That's awesome.
17:10Boys, there's always money on offer, as you know.
17:12Yes.
17:13Tomorrow, Brad Beer from BMT is coming here as our depreciation schedule expert.
17:18Do you know what that is?
17:19Absolutely no idea.
17:20Basically...
17:21Okay.
17:22So you've just got to get as close to Brad's figure than anyone else.
17:31Okay.
17:32Can we have Brad's phone number?
17:33No.
17:34Okay.
17:35Nickel.
17:36All right, fellas.
17:37We've got a few other houses to see.
17:38Enjoy.
17:39Have a good day.
17:40Thanks so much.
17:41Hey, boys.
17:42Good luck with your DIY Mitre 10 do-it-right-the-first-time job.
17:44There's money involved.
17:45Let us know when you want to come down for a swing, mate.
17:48This year, each team gets five grand to spend on a DIY project at Mitre 10.
17:54And if they do it right the first time, they take home another five grand cash.
18:00Get some 200 by 200 spotted gum sleepers and do a custom swing set, which will not only
18:05look really cool, but it'll add that sense of fun for the fun factory in the backyard.
18:10I'm really excited because it's going to be big and it's going to be fun.
18:13You're going to need some rather big bolts to go through.
18:16Big bolts.
18:17Cool.
18:18So we've got a couple of posts at the top so that we can actually make it sturdy and
18:20sturdy with these bolts.
18:21Beautiful.
18:22We're going to need some decent chain as well.
18:23We'll get you set up with a seat.
18:24Yep.
18:25And then it's a matter of just putting the whole thing together.
18:27Let us know when you want to come down for a swing, mate.
18:30You know, when you're swinging, you've got to do it right the first time.
18:41Which contestants do you think are creating a winning space this week?
18:45To cast your vote, all you have to do is head to the Block website now.
18:49And while you're there, don't forget to check out all of our amazing Block galleries.
18:57Back at the Block, I'm with Shelley checking out the progress in the backyard.
19:09Next up is House 4.
19:11Charlie and Brad have the smallest backyard space to work with at 378 square metres.
19:18The hero of their backyard is their plungy pool with stone lookalike tiles, timber boardwalk
19:24and large stone pavers.
19:26Behind this will be a fire pit aerial with a curved stone bench seat as well as a narrow
19:32yard leading around to the side of the property where they'll have a private entrance to the
19:37communal tennis court.
19:39Hello.
19:40Isn't it nice to be outside on a day like today?
19:44As you said, Shelley, it's warm, isn't it?
19:46It's beautiful.
19:47It's stinking hot.
19:48Get some water in there so we can have a swim.
19:49Yeah, that's it.
19:50No fence yet, mate.
19:51No swimming.
19:52No?
19:53Yes.
19:54So this is an interesting tile here.
19:56It's camouflage sort of black camouflage.
19:58Sure.
19:59I don't know.
20:00I'm surprised you saw the pool if it's camouflage.
20:02I'm saying it's going to be nice and warm in there.
20:05It will be.
20:06Being a black pool, it's going to be like a spa bath.
20:08No, it'll be beautiful and warm.
20:10I think a black pool down here is a great idea.
20:12Yeah.
20:13Personally.
20:14So are you planting out around?
20:15Yeah, so we're planting out around the side.
20:17Like, obviously, you're pretty close to the fence, so there's not going to be too much.
20:20Yeah.
20:21I like this idea, coming straight off your outdoor living onto your deck to your pool.
20:25Yeah.
20:26I think that's a really nice layout too.
20:27Yeah.
20:28And then what, you've got it raised up the back there.
20:29Yeah, so we've got a bit of a landing for some day beds and that.
20:33Chairs.
20:34Right.
20:35Nice.
20:36Yeah, so we've got a bit of a fire pit area out the back there.
20:37Now, you've got your private entrance to the tennis court shell approved.
20:41Oh, it came through.
20:42Great.
20:43Yes.
20:44Okay.
20:45Yeah, I passed body court with flying colours.
20:46Does anyone have anything they want to vote on?
20:49Has anyone opposed to us putting a gate into the tennis court?
20:52I have no problem with it.
20:54Anyone else?
20:57Awesome, guys.
20:58Excellent.
20:59And, you know, when you first arrived here, you didn't like the fact that you were next to the tennis court.
21:02No.
21:03But you've got a private entrance through a door, pathway, straight into the court.
21:08Yeah.
21:09Tennis loving family who loves black.
21:14It's a very niche market, isn't it?
21:16It's getting smaller.
21:17You love tennis.
21:18You love black.
21:19Are you aiming at someone who likes black who doesn't play tennis?
21:22No.
21:23You don't have to love black to like this house.
21:25My whole house isn't black.
21:27There's just little bits.
21:29How the body corporate's going to run the booking of the court.
21:32I was thinking that.
21:33Yeah, if you just look out the gate and you go, no one's on it, you guys are straight out there.
21:36So you've got majority usage, really.
21:38Maybe we'll just lock it all up and ours will be the only one.
21:40No, you won't.
21:41Yeah, true that.
21:42You're leaving in two weeks.
21:43It's only our house.
21:44Not wrong.
21:45Two weeks.
21:47A lot to do in two weeks.
21:48Isn't there just?
21:49Yeah.
21:50There is so much left to do and just even the tidy up and the cleaning and those extra painting and all the little defects.
21:56That's all going to be done as well, isn't it?
21:58Yeah, look, 100%, but I guess we can't take our eye off what we're meant to be doing this week either.
22:02So you wouldn't want to sacrifice this for something inside that's already been judged either.
22:07So that is in our mind, but I think front yard week is going to be a bit more of a week to navigate that.
22:12That's for sure.
22:13Yeah, sure.
22:14Well, good luck.
22:15There's lots to do.
22:16Lots to do.
22:17And lots of planting.
22:18Yeah, but in this beautiful sunshine.
22:20Make hay while the sun shines, my friends.
22:22Woo-hoo.
22:23We're off to the next house.
22:24See you later.
22:25See you later.
22:26See you, see you.
22:27Bye, Shelly.
22:30How are you guys feeling generally?
22:33Generally, I'm pretty stressed out.
22:36Before Shell and I make our way over to House 5, we're catching up with the block's architect, Julian Brenchley,
22:42to discuss some of the products we've been using this season.
22:46Well, this is a James Hardy linear board.
22:48Right.
22:49And it's gone up so fast.
22:51It has.
22:52And, Julian, it doesn't rot, doesn't warp, doesn't twist.
22:55It's all straight.
22:57So you love it.
22:58I love it.
22:59It's true.
23:00It doesn't rot.
23:01It's going to last 100 years.
23:03Once the painting's on the pre-primed boards, you don't have to touch it.
23:07Well, that's what I love about it.
23:08Pre-primed.
23:09So half your job's done.
23:10Look, it's a gift.
23:11You don't have to come to your holiday house and go, oh, God, I've got to paint it again.
23:14I'm going to spend the whole Christmas holiday.
23:16No, no, this is done.
23:17This is like a set and forget kind of concept, right?
23:19Yeah, fantastic.
23:20So, look, we've really kicked it out of the park.
23:22Good on you, James Hardy.
23:24Yeah, thanks, James.
23:25Good on you.
23:26But it's been an amazing ride.
23:27That was our out, mate, for sure.
23:28Okay, right, I'm out.
23:41Great.
23:42Oh, you know, what's going on?
23:44What are the rules around the digging holes, man?
23:46You've got to mark everything out and get approval before you start digging.
23:51Troy's gone and got an auger in there, and now he's just drilling.
23:56Yeah, there has to be processes.
23:58Otherwise, you know, there's live power, there's live sewer through these joints, the water,
24:03everything.
24:04If we start hitting that, we're in trouble.
24:05We can shut the whole site down.
24:07Like, it's not the Troy Lovett show, is it?
24:11But it seems like it is.
24:12Everything's about Troy at the moment.
24:15Hey, Simmo, drama in House 5?
24:26There's always drama in House 5 this week.
24:29Why?
24:30There's a common factor?
24:31Yeah.
24:32Troy Lovett.
24:33What's he, breaking rules now, is he?
24:34He's just running his own show in there.
24:35Not asking questions.
24:36I heard that you had a bit of a shouting match with him.
24:37He's fighting back, is he?
24:38I've had a few shouting matches with him this week.
24:39Mate, well, are we penalising him?
24:40I think I need to penalise him.
24:41Yeah, we should.
24:42Yeah.
24:43I think, I don't trust him.
24:44So at 6 o'clock, when tools are down...
24:45He's out.
24:46He's out.
24:47All right, I'm going to go and check with him now, mate.
24:48Thank you, mate.
24:49Good on you, brother.
24:50Calm down, Simmo.
24:51Bloody hell.
24:52It's backyard week, and with only three days to reveal, the block site is as busy as it's
25:18going to get, with loads of deliveries and trades everywhere.
25:22That doesn't mean Christian, and in particular, his landscaper, Troy, are free to do what
25:27they want.
25:28Nato and Ashton are going to be grouting.
25:32And Simmo isn't loving it.
25:34I'm sick of the Troy Lovett show, mate.
25:36The rules around digging holes, are you meant to get them approved before you start digging?
25:40Sure, we can dig trenches for footings and s*** like that, sure, no problem.
25:44The arborist has already told him off for drilling up there.
25:47I'm sure it is the block, but it feels like the Troy Lovett show at the moment.
25:57Christian.
25:58Scotty.
25:59Shelly.
26:00Hey, Christian.
26:01How are you?
26:02Hi, Scotty.
26:03What are you causing trouble for, Troy?
26:04Scotty and Shelly came around to see our backyard, and the first thing Scotty did was sort of
26:12have a little go at Troy.
26:13I've already spoken to Simmo, and just do what you're here to do.
26:17No problem.
26:19No worries.
26:20Christian, how are you going?
26:23Hey, Scotty.
26:24Hey, Shelly.
26:25How are we?
26:26Where's Mimi?
26:27Mimi's out shopping again.
26:28Get her here digging some holes, mate.
26:29Yeah, I know.
26:30She'll be on the tours tomorrow.
26:31Mimi and Christian are dealing with the biggest backyard space.
26:32Their design includes a pool and surrounding timber deck, next to an outside barbecue area,
26:33complete with a drink spa in the shape of a boat.
26:34Then, as we head around to the other side of the boat, we're going to have a look at
26:35some of the other features of the backyard.
26:36We're going to have a look at some of the other features of the backyard.
26:37We're going to have a look at some of the other features of the backyard.
26:39surrounding timber deck, next to an outside barbecue area, complete with a drink spa in
26:43the shape of a boat.
26:44Then, as we head around to the other side of the house, there will be a half-sized basketball
26:49court next to a fire pit and seating area.
26:53What did your landscape budget end up being?
26:55The landscape budget ended up being $80,000 cash with the $15,000 as well from High Pages.
27:01So the High Pages is for front yard week.
27:03That's why we're throwing a little bit more money into the backyard this week.
27:07sort of gone for the win as well to try and, you know, boost up the funds because, I mean,
27:11if we can achieve everything that we've got planned for this week, it'll be awesome. And
27:15I think we'll be in for a good shot.
27:17Kate, you've employed Troy. Keep the reins in.
27:21Yes.
27:22Yeah, this is up to you.
27:23Yeah, 100%.
27:24So you're at fault here as well.
27:25Yep.
27:26This is your house. You're the one taking it to auction. You're in charge. Okay? They
27:29might know what they're doing, but you're in charge.
27:31Okay.
27:32Okay?
27:33So, based on that, this site is shutting at six o'clock tonight.
27:37Six o'clock?
27:38Six o'clock tonight. Everybody else is going to keep working? This site shuts at six. You
27:42can stay.
27:43Why is that?
27:44There's no one else. Surely you know why you're getting shut at six. There's just stuff going
27:48on here, unsupervised, that we can't accept.
27:50Yeah, I think...
27:51So, therefore, if we leave, then who knows what happens then. So, that's why.
27:56Okay, I understand that. But the thing with the drilling the hole that Simmo got upset
28:00about, that they already knew where the services were before they drilled the hole.
28:04Did you check? You've always got to check before you dig. That's just, that is an Australian
28:08concept.
28:09Hey, we're not arguing about this. It's six o'clock. Let's go.
28:21Scotty just said that we're shut down at six o'clock. No work after six today.
28:25Everybody?
28:26Just us. I tried arguing with Scotty. He goes, no, I don't want to hear it.
28:30I've got no idea. I've got no idea.
28:34Is that going to be a big setback?
28:36No, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It is what it is. It is what it is. We just...
28:43I'm flat. Flat, you know, like I'm a glass half full person, and I still am. I still
28:48think 99% of the things that I've done all throughout this week has been right. So, everyone's
28:53flat, me included. So, we still need to push hard. So, I've just got all the boys together,
28:58had a bit of a chat. We're not only going to leave two hours early, we're going to try
29:02and leave three or four hours early. We're just going to get this out. We're going to
29:07get back to our house, have a shower, go take the guys out for dinner and start again tomorrow.
29:11So, even though it's two hours, let's make it four hours.
29:15Being right outside the nine and six office, you literally cannot get away with anything.
29:20Anything that they see that...
29:21What do you want to get away with, Christian?
29:23Yeah, literally. I was just going to ask the same thing.
29:26No, well, I mean, Troy, I don't know. I feel like he gets picked on a little bit.
29:35I'll just get my bag.
29:36So, while it's an early mark for Troy, it's no such luck for Christian and the other contestants.
29:44As well as the massive landscaping work to be done, they should also be crunching the
29:48numbers to figure out the depreciation value of their properties for tomorrow's challenge.
29:54But it seems some people are taking the battle of the block wits a little more seriously than others.
30:04I don't know how many gyprock screws are in this room. And the V-Luxes, how much are they worth?
30:10I don't know. So, yeah, I'm going to have to do some... It's going to take some work, actually.
30:17I'm going to... When I drive to Melbourne to do some returns to get some more money back,
30:20I'm going to ring all the suppliers that I know. I'm going to figure out, like,
30:24exactly how much money I've spent.
30:27Essentially, like, just try and figure it out. And I f***ing need the money, so I'm like,
30:32let me figure out. So I'm like, I'm on a mission.
30:36How are you going to do tomorrow's depreciation estimation challenge?
30:40I'm just going to throw a figure out there for the challenge.
30:43Like, you know, the screws are going to be, like, part of the depreciation schedule.
30:46And I'm like, holy s***, I don't know how many gyprock screws are in my wall.
30:50I appreciate all the depreciation. Simple mathematics, simple science.
30:55It would be about $54,000.
30:59OK, maybe. Holy s***.
31:00Oh, thank you. Do we miss anything?
31:04Some sort of expert when it comes to calculating depreciation schedules.
31:09And I'm like, how the f*** are you going to... Like, how do they know exactly?
31:12You know what I mean?
31:13I'm just going to take a wild guess.
31:14Yeah, I mean, it's circa $50,000 to $60,000, to be honest.
31:17Holy s***.
31:19OK, stop the tape.
31:22Over the six weeks that Maddie's been on the block, I've never heard her swear once.
31:27Surely this isn't the challenge to break her.
31:31And I flippin' need the money.
31:34And I'm like, holy moly, I don't know how many gyprock screws are in my wall.
31:38OK, amazing. Holy moly.
31:40And I'm like, how the heck are you going to... Like, how do they know exactly?
31:45$50,000 to $60,000.
31:47Holy moly.
31:49Phew, that's a relief.
31:51That's a relief.
32:06It's a busy morning on the block with backyard deliveries arriving thick and fast.
32:11There's only one thing that would get our contestants to put their tools down.
32:16Cash. Hard-earned cash.
32:18Morning.
32:19I know you're busy. I know you're busy.
32:21But there's some cash on the line.
32:23Come on in.
32:24Hey, Scotty.
32:25I know you've been doing some very heavy arithmetic overnight.
32:29And very difficult arithmetic,
32:31because you want to get your hands on some of the prize money right here
32:35from my mate Brad from BMT.
32:38$7,895.
32:41And where's the 10 cents, Brad? You promised me 10 cents.
32:44Oh, sorry.
32:45Good boy. He's got it.
32:4710 cents right there.
32:50$7,895.10.
32:54Would be very handy.
32:55Yeah, we need this win bad, because the cash is dwindling away.
33:00Earlier this morning, Brad Beer from BMT inspected all five houses
33:05and calculated their depreciation schedule,
33:08which is valuable information for potential investors.
33:12Brad, what do we reckon, mate?
33:13I reckon that hopefully there's a bit of science
33:15and we'll come up with some numbers
33:16and you get those construction costs worked out.
33:19OK, let's see where you landed.
33:21House one, you've got the pen over here.
33:24You write up your number there that you came with.
33:26Come on out, one of you.
33:27Right now?
33:28I think I accidentally made a boo-boo.
33:30That's all right. You just write your boo-boo up.
33:32It's a bit much.
33:34Oh, you'd be surprised.
33:37You should have done it backwards.
33:38Yeah.
33:39Oh, no.
33:40Oh, no.
33:43$5,329,591.10.
33:50It was way too big and, yeah, whoops.
33:54House two.
33:55Go for it, Courtney.
33:57$2,553,772.25.
34:02I added on the 25 cents because I thought it just sounded good.
34:05Yeah.
34:06House three, let's see it.
34:07That is $4,195,800.22.
34:12Sold.
34:13Beauty.
34:16Four.
34:17Let's go.
34:18OK.
34:19$4,268,462.00.
34:25I decided it was like picking the jelly beans in a jelly bean jar.
34:32Could be a downfall with no cents.
34:33No.
34:34What's that?
34:37What do you mean?
34:41Oh, I love that.
34:42That heart's not going to help you.
34:45$3,620,266.36 plus a heart.
34:50OK.
34:52Now, Brad from BMT is going to put up his professional figures.
34:57Whoever's the closest wins $7,895.10.
35:01$7,895.10.
35:04I originally thought Donnie Walls came up with the number.
35:09House one, what have we got right now?
35:11We're doing it to the screws, counting how many screws are in our house.
35:14Ooh.
35:16We won't even bother reading that.
35:17You're two million off.
35:19If anyone wants to hire me, I could be your accountant.
35:23This is very close as well.
35:25It's between one and three.
35:27Four as well.
35:28We were so confident.
35:29We forgot to remind ourselves that we are actually terrible at every single challenge.
35:33Yeah.
35:34OK, ladies and gentlemen.
35:35That one's way off.
35:37House three is about $850.
35:39That one's way off.
35:40So the winner's house four.
35:53We did it.
35:55How'd you do it?
35:56Jelly beans.
35:57Guess the jelly beans.
35:59Jelly beans.
36:01I don't think Kylie and Brad spent a lot of time, which was probably really smart.
36:04Why we didn't do that, I don't know.
36:07Kylie and Brad, well done.
36:08Now, Brad, like the amount of money that's gone into these houses is quite incredible, isn't it?
36:14And talk about what that means for an investor.
36:17So when you look at that investment, what you actually pay to buy one of those
36:21versus the amount of depreciation, that ratio will be definitely the highest out of everything we've done.
36:26Fantastic.
36:27Everybody, big round of applause for Brad.
36:30We probably put the least work in.
36:33The easiest challenge we've won.
36:36But while Kylie is all smiles for now, it doesn't take long for it to disappear.
36:42They definitely used the wrong sand.
36:45Look, someone's left this.
36:46It's already leeching.
36:49Who put the board up there?
36:51It's run along here.
36:52It's leeching.
36:53Yeah.
36:54Oh, ****.
36:57This whole wall's just causing a bit of drama today.
37:00We're waiting on core fill.
37:02That's got to dry so we can put the spigots on to get the glass fence on.
37:06Now we've got leeching on the front of it.
37:07We're going to have to acid wash it, so.
37:11Brad's not loving this block wall right now.
37:15We're running out of days in the week, especially with the drama that we've been getting with deliveries.
37:20And things are about to get even worse.
37:22It's going to need to be wetter than that, mate.
37:24What mix is this?
37:27Nah.
37:28Why?
37:29Wrong mix.
37:30Why is it not a 7mm mix?
37:33It's not a 7mm mix.
37:34Brad, you've got the wrong mix here, mate.
37:35It's not a 7mm mix.
37:37You need core fill.
37:38Yeah, block fill.
37:39Core fill.
37:41That's not core fill.
37:43This is someone else's.
37:45No, this is Brad House's.
37:46Why is...
37:47We've ordered the wrong stuff.
37:48Core fill mix can't have 20mm stone.
37:51It's got to be 7mm stone.
37:53And it's got to be a bit wetter, just so it can run all through the block work,
37:57go down, and then there's no air pockets.
38:00This could create air pockets in there.
38:01That's why we need the right mix.
38:04Now that is a disaster.
38:08It's not ideal.
38:10Should have been poured yesterday.
38:11It's not ideal.
38:12Should have been poured yesterday.
38:25It's Friday afternoon of Backyard Landscaping Week and the block is chockers.
38:31Yeah, I'm tired.
38:33Very tired.
38:34It still looks amazing out there and we're going to get there.
38:39Jesus Christ.
38:41I don't even know where Mimi wants this.
38:44While Christian tries to offload Mimi's delivery...
38:47You ready?
38:52Oh, my God.
38:54Over at House 2, Grant is drilling down into what he needs to get done
38:58to finish their backyard in time.
39:00Basically, we want to be in a position where we're just planting plants tomorrow
39:04and laying turf and that's it.
39:05And maybe staining the deck if we've got time.
39:08That's about it.
39:09Good position to be in.
39:11I like it.
39:12I like it.
39:13Furniture's still to go in tomorrow.
39:14So it'll be good.
39:15It'll be good.
39:17Also looking good at House 1,
39:19they're in the middle of lowering their stairway from the heavens.
39:23So with our high pages lever,
39:24we also got $5,000 to put towards a special item or object
39:29which we decided obviously would be our spiral staircase.
39:33They are finally going in.
39:35Yeah, it was perfect.
39:37This isn't the first time we've seen a potentially game-changing
39:40spiral staircase installation on the show.
39:43The staircase is absolutely beautiful.
39:46Which won Tess and Luke the block.
39:48Our couple from Cairns,
39:50Tess and Luke,
39:52winners of the block 2019.
39:55And things are also falling into place for Rikki and Hayden.
39:59Oh, look at that.
40:02Oh, it's the wrong colour.
40:04It's the wrong colour.
40:09It is the fun factory down at House 3.
40:11So we've got to make sure we have the most bit of fun in this backyard.
40:14I don't know if anyone's doing a swing set or any sort of play equipment.
40:17So, you know, we're looking at a block first again down at House 3.
40:22Well, boys.
40:24Scotty!
40:26She's a fickle old isle in this with the weather, isn't it?
40:29Oh, it's beautiful, mate. We're loving it.
40:30How good is it?
40:31Your Mitre 10 DIY project, get the job done right the first time.
40:36Wow, you've done a great job, boys.
40:38Very hard to drill through, so I took a little bit to get it done.
40:41Pretty heavy to lift, too.
40:42Well, congratulations. You win yourself these hats.
40:44Beautiful.
40:45They're magnificent.
40:46Legend, mate.
40:47Wag them on.
40:48Got my name on it and all.
40:49Rikki and Hayden, the Mitre 10 DIY project hat.
40:53Do you like those hats?
40:54Feel like an expert already.
40:56Well, maybe you might be able to make a better hat out of this.
40:59Now we're talking.
41:00$5,000.
41:01I'll take it.
41:02A Mitre 10.
41:03Beautiful.
41:05That is mighty helpful, mate.
41:06Thank you very much.
41:07I like this.
41:08It looks great.
41:09It's got a little bit of colonial touch to the modern house.
41:12It's beautiful.
41:13She's strong, mate.
41:14She's sturdy.
41:15You can get all the kids on it.
41:16Congratulations on your hats.
41:17Thanks, Scotty.
41:18Good luck, Scotty.
41:19Thanks, Scotty.
41:20With the DIY project complete, Rikki and Hayden are hoping to swing it to win it.
41:25Hard at House 4, they're about to completely faceplant.
41:29What's this I hear about you're not getting delivery of plants?
41:35Yeah, no plant delivery.
41:36How come?
41:37Well, apparently all the drivers and the nurseries are too busy.
41:41Too busy for the block?
41:42Too busy, yeah.
41:44Well, Clay had made calls to a few of his wholesale nurseries that he deals with.
41:50When we questioned him about where the plants were and what day they were being delivered,
41:54he said, oh, they're too busy and they can't be delivered.
41:57We'll just pick them up.
41:58I'd be ringing them up.
41:59Surely they could swindle or something.
42:01Yeah.
42:02I would have thought.
42:03So then I started ringing these nurseries.
42:06And the first one that I rung, they said, oh, yeah, we've heard from Clay,
42:10but he actually hasn't put an order in.
42:12So I was like, right, well, we actually need the plants for tomorrow
42:17because we have to present our backyard on Sunday.
42:21And I need them.
42:22Can you deliver them to Phillip Island?
42:24And they kind of laughed at me.
42:28Yeah, so Collie's gone to pick up some plants.
42:32We were under the impression that all our plants were sorted
42:35and we didn't have to worry about it.
42:37I asked a couple of times, and Clay's trying really hard to stay on top of everything.
42:41And we thought it was all sorted.
42:43Are we good?
42:44Apparently, that was not quite the case.
42:46That was a bit of a bombshell for us.
42:49Look, he's been working his hardest.
42:51There's no doubt about that.
42:52He's put in 100 percent.
42:53And he's been working his hardest.
42:55There's no doubt about that.
42:56He's put in 100 percent.
42:57And he wants us to do well.
43:00It's just, when we have to go and get things, it's not that easy.
43:05There's a lot of work to be done back there, that's for sure.
43:13Baby.
43:14Hey.
43:15How are you?
43:16So, do we have any needs for plants on New Orleans?
43:20Not that I've seen, no.
43:23Yeah.
43:26Literally.
43:31Sunday night, it's the final push to reveal.
43:35But Kylie and Brad fall even further behind.
43:38Everyone else's yards are developing and ours isn't.
43:41It's a pretty dire situation.
43:44A major problem is found in house one.
43:46Can't be revealed.
43:47What?
43:48Sorry, guys.
43:49The boys have put so much hard work in, and I can't afford this mistake.
43:54And the backyards are revealed to the judges.
43:56Oh, my God.
43:58What on earth?
44:00But along with awe, there is also a total shocker.
44:04And what we're seeing is a really poorly planned, uninviting space.
