00:00Today, we're going to talk about a disease that we don't usually notice.
00:05It's the disease of our bones and joints.
00:08Many people here experience various problems, from arthritis to osteoporosis.
00:13We'll be joined by the general physician, Dr. Villa Roderos Galban,
00:20to explain the symptoms and ways to keep our bones and joints healthy.
00:27Good morning, and welcome back to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:29I'm Dr. Villa. Good morning!
00:31Good morning, PP and Ms. Diane.
00:34Rise and shine!
00:35May it be a rainy day for our viewers.
00:39I hope we're all safe and dry.
00:41Well, Doc, what are the common problems with bones and joints
00:45that you see in your patients and consult with you?
00:49And how does this affect their daily life, Doc?
00:54The bone and joint problem, most importantly,
00:58is a common condition or a common disease that we see in the clinic.
01:05Usually, with my patients, what they always complain about is,
01:11number one, the painful itch caused by osteoarthritis.
01:17This is limited to women that are in their perimenopausal or menopausal age.
01:25Because when we reach this stage or age of our lives,
01:32especially for women,
01:34the wear and tear on our joints is more evident.
01:38The fluid that cushions our bones is gone.
01:43That's why osteoarthritis is more common.
01:47Another joint problem that we always see is gout or gouty arthritis.
01:53That's something that's important.
01:58When you have gout, it's more evident in discomfort
02:04because you have the tendency to have flares,
02:08which is severe pain caused by the buildup of gout or uric acid in your joints.
02:16For bones, it's common in women, osteoporosis,
02:20which looks at the decrease of bone mass in our body.
02:25Alright, Doc.
02:26How do we know if we have a problem with our bones and joints?
02:31Are there symptoms that we should be aware of?
02:35That's an important question.
02:38When we diagnose bone or joint problems,
02:44the symptoms we see are very physical.
02:50One of the things we look at is pain.
02:53Most importantly, when we feel joint pain,
02:59it usually manifests after intense use or after eating certain kinds of food.
03:09It's a very telling symptom of a problem or a problem classified as arthritis.
03:18Another telling symptom of a bone or joint problem is a decrease in bone mass.
03:24We see a decrease in bone mass or a decrease in the height of an individual.
03:33That's actually more evident when a person has osteoporosis.
03:38Another problem that we see is loss of muscle mass
03:43because it's no longer used because of discomfort in movement
03:50when there's a problem that can be classified as arthritis.
03:55Doc, what are the main conditions in bones and joints,
04:00just like arthritis or osteoporosis?
04:05A lot of risk factors actually come from physical problems or physical issues.
04:12Number one is weight.
04:14It's harder to control or manage diseases like osteoarthritis or gout pain
04:23when our weight is not optimal because our bones and joints support our weight.
04:30When we're overweight or obese, it's harder to control.
04:38Another is use of tobacco or cigarette smoking.
04:43Cigarette smoking is very dangerous to our bone and joint health
04:48because it desiccates or dries up the fluid in our body,
04:54most importantly, in our joints.
04:57It makes us more prone to diseases like osteoarthritis.
05:01Another, of course, is age.
05:04When we reach a certain age,
05:09the wear and tear on our body is more evident,
05:12which makes us prone to bone and joint diseases.
05:16Doc, how does lifestyle and diet affect the health of our bones and joints?
05:24Actually, Prof, that's related to what we said about weight and lifestyle.
05:30Of course, if we don't take care of what we eat,
05:36if we eat processed foods,
05:44we're more prone to become overweight or obese,
05:48which greatly affects our joints.
05:51Another, of course, is if we don't incorporate physical exercise into our everyday routine,
06:00our bones and joints won't be strengthened.
06:03Our muscles won't be strengthened,
06:05which can help support our bones and joints,
06:09which aggravates the wear and tear of our bones and joints.
06:15Another, of course, is tobacco smoking or even vaping
06:19is not optimal for taking care of our bones and joints.
06:27Doc, what are the therapies for patients with bone and joint diseases?
06:35It depends on what kind of problem we have.
06:40For example, for gouty arthritis,
06:44we look at lowering the uric acid level in our body.
06:49If the uric acid level is high, it can tend to form crystals,
06:54which deposit in our joints.
06:57One of the things we need to do is to lower the uric acid level.
07:02Medicines like Fibuxostat or Colchicine can help in lowering that.
07:09Another, of course, is if we have problems already like osteoarthritis,
07:16we usually recommend going to a physical therapist for strengthening exercises.
07:25It's important so that our joints won't give that much tension and pressure
07:33and our osteoarthritis won't get worse.
07:36Of course, a healthy diet is still important,
07:40especially if we already have bone and joint pain.
07:44Calcium in our body is important.
07:47We can see this in the common food we eat like dairy, fish.
07:53It's important.
07:54And of course, physical activities and physical exercise
07:58if we already experience bone and joint pain.
08:03Thank you so much, Dr. Ravia,
08:05for giving us information about our bone and joint health.
08:09Dr. Ravia Roderos Galvan.
08:11Thanks, Dr. Ravia.
08:13Thank you very much.
08:14Good morning to all of us.
