00:00Once a chic and swanky nightclub where everyone came to see and be seen, Sky Bar is now home
00:05to at least 400 displaced people seeking haven from Israel's ground operations in South Lebanon
00:12and airstrikes on Hezbollah-controlled suburbs of the Lebanese capital, VOA's Behzad Hamdard reports.
00:22Beirut's luxurious nightclub Sky Bar is normally filled with people looking for a place to mingle.
00:30Now it's filled with people who are calling it a temporary home. Bands used to perform here,
00:36now laundry clutters the stage. Sky Bar opened its doors to over 400 internally displaced people
00:43who left their homes amid Israel's bombing and ground operation in South Lebanon and Beirut.
00:50I am from Ataroun in South Lebanon. I am here because Israel hit our home and forced us to
00:56leave. All houses in Ataroun were destroyed. We left there with my family and fled here.
01:02I was living in Berj Al Barajna. There were airstrikes and destruction around the house.
01:06We escaped and came here. In late September, the International Organization for Migration
01:13estimated that there are at least 346,000 internally displaced people in Lebanon.
01:19Hezbollah and Israel have been trading fire since Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023.
01:25In September 2024, Israel escalated its military attacks in Lebanon with aerial
01:31strikes against Hezbollah targets. Rhonda Al-Haj Hassan from South Lebanon's Tair province
01:37says that the initial conflict was away from them until Israel's recent airstrikes.
01:44Sometimes our village was also attacked, but we stayed in our village. We continued to work
01:48because we had to live. When airstrikes started hitting everywhere without warning, we did not
01:53look at what was happening. We took our belongings and left. In the nightclub's parking lot where
01:58luxurious cars were lined up until a few months ago, small and large tents have been set up,
02:04rugs have been spread out, and children are sleeping or playing. The nightclub owner asked
02:09not to be identified or appear on camera, but says that with help from some humanitarian
02:15organizations, he is providing for the needs of the people living at his bar. That includes hot
02:21meals as often as three times a day. The owner of the bar opened this place to us. Thank you very
02:28much. He is amazing. With the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel continuing, many of the
02:34people living here say that they are afraid to go home and are unsure if they'll even have a home
02:40to return to. For VOA Turkish in Beirut, Lebanon, Bejan Hamdad, VOA News.
