00:00Just recently, there was a signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between the Department of Education
00:06led by Secretary Sunny Angara and Chalkboard Incorporated.
00:11This is to implement the education program in public schools
00:16to help address the literacy and numeracy of K-10 students.
00:23And now, we are joined by the co-founder and COO of Chalkboard Incorporated, Mr. Albert Tablan,
00:30and his business development and partnership director, Mr. Leandro, or Mr. Andrew Añonuevo.
00:35Good morning to you and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:38Good morning.
00:39Good morning, Audrey and Dianne.
00:41Good morning to our viewers of Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:46Good morning, Audrey and Dianne.
00:47And good morning to our viewers of Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:50Thank you for inviting us.
00:52Can you tell our viewers about your education program
00:58and how did you establish this partnership with the Department of Education?
01:03We are Chalkboard. We are an educational services and technology company.
01:07We actually began as a pioneering tutoring platform
01:11that caters to Filipino students all over the world.
01:15But with our insights during the pandemic and our experiences,
01:18we launched this education program.
01:21It's our flagship initiative and it's tailored to address the learning gaps
01:25of literacy and numeracy of our students among public schools here in the Philippines.
01:30And just recently, with our partnership with the Department of Education,
01:34it actually formalized the role of DepEd when it comes to logistical support.
01:39And with the help of the Department of Education,
01:41we now know which schools in the Philippines
01:43really need intervention when it comes to reading and math.
01:49On the other hand, as a Chalkboard, we handle the program design.
01:53Of course, we make sure that this is aligned with the curriculum of the Department of Education.
01:57At the same time, we implement the tutoring on the ground.
02:00So we can implement the program in person
02:02or if there's a need for it to be digital or through the digital platform,
02:07we can also do the tutoring in that way.
02:10Okay, so reading and math are the subjects that you help students with.
02:17And I understand even parents can be involved in the tutoring sessions.
02:21But what is the structure of this educational intervention?
02:24What is the difference between this and the usual tutoring for students?
02:30Sir Andrew?
02:31Well, in terms of our structure,
02:33first of all, we start by recruiting community tutors
02:43because the purpose of this is to give them jobs.
02:46And of course, in terms of recruiting community tutors,
02:52the same goes for teaching our students.
02:56They are the ones we choose.
02:58And the program, again, is for the students
03:00who have difficulty in reading and math.
03:04So for the students who are already good at it,
03:07this program is not for them.
03:09But like we always say,
03:11this program is all-inclusive.
03:13It means that there are programs for them,
03:16our acceleration program.
03:18Because our academic program is academic remediation,
03:21acceleration, and livelihood.
03:23So academic, it is focused on two things,
03:25literacy and numeracy.
03:27Then, in terms of acceleration,
03:30this is in terms of digital literacy for the students.
03:33And of course, in terms of remediation,
03:37again, for the students who have difficulty in reading and math.
03:39And of course, the last part of the structure,
03:43this is the livelihood program for the community tutors.
03:46The same goes for the schools where this is beneficial
03:50because part of the program,
03:52we provide good and balanced nutrition for our students.
03:56So our food providers are the schools.
04:01We buy food from them.
04:05So the schools earn.
04:07If there are no more canteens in our schools,
04:09the parents cook.
04:12And of course, as part of our empowerment to them,
04:16we provide them with livelihood
04:19based on the food that they cook and prepare for their children.
04:24Don't you monitor
04:26if the academic performance of the students is improving?
04:30Especially since we want this educational program to be effective.
04:34That's where we gauge if this approach is effective.
04:37Yes, that's right.
04:39This is one of the strengths of the Chalkboard Aral Program
04:42because we normally employ continuous assessments.
04:47We have pre-assessments.
04:49And then we also conduct mid-term assessments,
04:52mid-term of the program.
04:53And we also conduct our post-assessments
04:55after the program.
04:57So in that way,
04:58we compare the reading or math level of the students
05:03before our intervention.
05:05And after the intervention program,
05:07we also measure the progress of each student
05:11who joined our tutoring program.
05:13Where or how did you implement this program?
05:17And how was the feedback?
05:18Basically, we're almost nationwide.
05:23Of course, we started here in Metro Manila,
05:26first in Pasig.
05:28And of course, from Pasig,
05:30it spread to other cities.
05:32Then, last year,
05:35we also conducted an Aral Program in Antipolo.
05:39And this year,
05:41we also conducted an Aral Program in Batac City,
05:46in Ilocos Norte,
05:47and even in Albay Province.
05:49And now,
05:51we are conducting the Aral Program in Concepcion, Iloilo,
05:55and also in our upcoming program in Naga City, Cebu.
06:00So it's not just here in Metro Manila.
06:01It's nationwide.
06:02Nationwide, right?
06:03For those who are interested in supporting the Aral Program,
06:07how can an individual or organization support you?
06:12Maybe I'll call on our viewers.
06:15With DEPEDS endorsement,
06:17we usually collaborate with the city mayors and city governments
06:20through the local government unit.
06:22And for individuals or private organizations,
06:27they can actually sponsor a student.
06:30They can also fund the learning materials and the resources.
06:34But for the individuals,
06:35we also welcome volunteers,
06:36people who want to help in our tutoring program
06:39or in any way to implement this tutoring program successfully.
06:45And for corporations,
06:47we also offer our sponsorship packages
06:49for their corporate social responsibility initiatives,
06:53the CSR goals of our private companies.
06:56And with that partnership,
06:57we make sure that they will create a very positive impact
07:00on the education of our Filipino students here in our country.
07:04And for students and parents
07:07who want to join the tutoring sessions,
07:09how can they contact you?
07:11Or should they go to the management of the schools
07:14so that they can join the beneficiaries?
07:16Normally, again, our program is data-driven.
07:20The selection here is done by the Department of Education,
07:26especially in the schools.
07:28Basically, they have lists of students
07:30who are having difficulty in reading and math.
07:36So from their list,
07:38we will select possible participants.
07:44And so far,
07:45the number of participants in our program
07:49is around 1,900 students nationwide.
07:55And we have reached out to more than 90 schools
07:59in the entire Philippines.
08:01So that's a lot.
08:02And we have been conducting this program for only two years,
08:05since last year.
08:08And many LGUs are now signifying their intention
08:13to continue the program.
08:17That's right.
08:18Because recently, if you remember from the news,
08:21our education has weakened in reading and math.
08:27Well, with the help of your organization,
08:30I hope we can help these students.
08:32Thank you very much.
08:33This RL program is a great ambition.
08:37Thank you for sharing this here in RSP,
08:39Sir Albert and Sir Andrew.
08:41Long live to you. Thank you.
08:42Thank you very much.
08:44Welcome, Dayan and Sir Aldrie.
