00:37and in this week's show we'll be looking back
00:39on Brighton Hove Albion's hard-fought victory
00:41and Newcastle United before we look ahead
00:44to the home match versus Wolverhampton Wanderers
00:46this weekend.
00:48First, here are the top stories from across Sussex.
00:52Salon staff have been left heartbroken
00:54and flat residents are said to have lost everything
00:56after a suspected arson attack in Worthing.
00:59The police are investigating a fire
01:01at a newly opened tanning salon in Worthing
01:04which resulted in the evacuation of around 40 people.
01:07Multiple fire crews responded to the fire
01:10at Tantastic in Broadwater Street West
01:12shortly before 11pm on Monday.
01:15The fire came after two previous incidents
01:17which saw the same salon broken into
01:19before later having its window smashed.
01:21Sussex Police said on Tuesday
01:23that an investigation was ongoing
01:25to establish the circumstances of the fire
01:27and a police presence can be expected in the area.
01:30In an update on Wednesday, a spokesperson said
01:32police are investigating the incident
01:34as arson and inquiries are ongoing.
01:36A social media post by the business owners read
01:39police are treating it as arson and our hearts are broken
01:42not just for us but the residents in the flats above us
01:45and have now lost everything and the surrounding businesses
01:47who have suffered smoke damage.
01:49Our Worthing store had only been open a few short months
01:52but in that time we have had three major incidents
01:54affect our business.
01:56Witnesses to the incident or anyone with any information
01:58is asked to contact the police online
02:00or by calling 101
02:02quoting serial number 1408 of the 21st of October.
02:07Two children have been arrested
02:09after two boys were robbed on their way home from school in Eastbourne.
02:12A boy and a girl told the two school boys, aged 12
02:15to hand over their bags on Thursday, October 17th
02:18according to Sussex Police.
02:20The two children have now been bailed
02:22with the conditions pending further inquiries
02:24Sussex Police confirmed.
02:26The incident happened near an alleyway in Greenway.
02:28A spokesperson for the force said
02:30anyone who witnessed the robberies or has any information
02:33is asked to contact the police via 101
02:35quoting serial 1073 of the 17th of October.
02:40Six pupils at an academy in West Sussex
02:43have not been given permission to travel
02:45to a prestigious cheerleading competition in the United States
02:48and their parents have made a desperate plea for a U-turn.
02:51Worthing-based cheerleading gym Top Gun UK
02:54has cemented itself as one of the leading cheer programs
02:57not just in the UK but globally.
02:59With award-winning children across the Sussex area
03:02many schools have given them permission
03:04to compete at competitions in the USA next year.
03:07However, St Robert Woodard Academy in Lansing
03:10has not approved requests for its six representatives to attend.
03:14One of the unhappy parents, Ali Ovett, said
03:17my daughter and her teammates are due to go to America next year
03:20firstly February to compete at NCA Texas
03:23and then on to UCA Florida
03:25then again in April to compete at a summit in Florida.
03:28These are the most prestigious competitions in cheerleading
03:30where our children have competed before
03:32and hold all first places.
03:34Ali said the parents have suggested the pupils
03:36can study whilst they are in America
03:38but is still a firm no.
03:40She said she has requested a meeting with the headteacher
03:42but she hasn't heard back.
03:44She said other schools are the polar opposite
03:46and are very supportive.
03:47She said they are encouraging and supporting
03:49and questioned why the academy is not encouraging these children
03:52to continue doing something amazing and support it.
03:55Explaining the decision, headteacher Kieran Scanlon said
03:57we recognise how talented the students are.
04:00We understand that this is a prestigious event
04:02and ultimately the decision about whether to attend or not
04:04rests with the parents.
04:06However, we are unable to authorise a request
04:08of 28 days of school absence
04:10to participate in a competition
04:12as per the Department for Education statutory guidance.
04:15An Indian restaurant in Sussex
04:17has been named among the top 20 in the UK.
04:20The British Indian Good Food Guide
04:22has revealed the top 20 restaurants nationwide.

04:44of British dining culture.
04:46Among the selected venues was the Chilli Pickle
04:48in Jubilee Street in Brighton
04:50which offers modern twists on traditional dishes.
04:53Finally, characters dressed in masquerade costumes
04:56will be shouldering a coffin through the dark streets
04:58of Hastings Old Town on October 31st
05:01in one of the most bizarre Halloween celebrations in Sussex.
05:04Hastings Voodoo Festival has been going on for more than a decade
05:07and has drawn a dedicated following.
05:09The procession sees people in elaborate costumes
05:11carrying flaming torches
05:13and led by a New Orleans-style Mardi Gras band.
05:16The fun starts at 7pm when people gather
05:18at the Lord Nelson pub in Hastings Old Town at 7pm.
05:22They then follow the coffin and band down
05:24pedestrianised George Street to the Albion
05:26for a gig with King Size Slim and his band.
05:29Hastings has a reputation for exotic and elaborate celebrations
05:32and in February holds a Fat Tuesday Festival
05:34which is the biggest Mardi Gras event in the UK.
05:37The town recently held its annual bonfire celebrations
05:40which saw a river of flaming torches
05:42and a huge bonfire and fireworks displays on the beach.
05:45Stay tuned for the Goldmouth Action Podcast.
06:03Welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast
06:06where we take a look at all the latest goings-on
06:08at Brighton, Hove, Albion and Crawley Town.
06:11I'm Matt Polk and this week I'm joined by Brighton writer Darren Howard,
06:14Crawley Town expert Mark Dunford and Sam Morton
06:17who covers both Albion and the Reds.
06:19Danny Welbeck once again underlined his importance to Brighton
06:22with a match-winning contribution in their 1-0 win at Newcastle on Saturday.
06:26We'll pick over the bones of the CNN host
06:29We'll pick over the bones of the Seagulls hard-fought win at St James' Park
06:33plus we'll bring you all the latest from Crawley Town
06:36who picked it a much-needed win this week.
06:39You can read all the stories we are talking about
06:41with videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk forward slash sport
06:45and you can check out other great videos on shotstv.com and Freeview channel 262.
06:50You may also be watching on the latest TV
06:52so thank you very much for tuning in.
06:53But as we said, Danny Welbeck's fifth goal
06:56in his eight top-flight appearances this season
06:59secured the three points for Albion at Newcastle.
07:01But boss Fabian Herzela admitted it wasn't necessarily a deserved win for Brighton.
07:05Darren, how did you see things and do you agree with him?
07:08Yeah, I have to agree with Herzela's comments after that.
07:13Brighton certainly rode their luck.
07:16Yeah, you can talk all about systems, low blocks and high lines and everything
07:21but sometimes you just need some old-fashioned luck
07:25and Brighton certainly got that at St James' Park.
07:28So it was an off day for the Newcastle Strikers, especially for Isak as well.
07:34I think we mentioned on the podcast just before the game
07:37that he was just coming back from injury.
07:38We were hoping that he would be a bit rusty as well
07:41and it turned out that he was.
07:43He had a couple of really good chances
07:45and just didn't quite have his usual shooting boots on
07:49which Eddie Howe sort of alluded to after the game as well.
07:54So Brighton were lucky in that respect
07:56but you've also got to credit them as well.
07:59There were some class performances from Verbruggen in particular,
08:02Bart Verbruggen, the goalkeeper.
08:04He played extremely well, was probably Brighton's best player on the day
08:10and it's good to see him playing so well as well.
08:14He's really established himself now as Brighton's number one.
08:18I remember they chopped and changed last year with Jason Steele
08:22and Verbruggen as he settled into the Premier League.
08:25But I think playing in the Euros, having a really good Euros with Holland,
08:29he was the Netherlands' number one last for the Euros
08:33and I think that's just given him so much confidence.
08:36He's really came into this, missed the first couple of games of the season
08:40but since he's come into the team, I think he's looked really solid
08:43and as you'd expect, very good on the ball as well.
08:45But some of the saves he produced at Newcastle were top class
08:50and Brighton are going to need that,
08:52especially when their defence is a bit shaky.
08:54They've still got a couple of injury concerns at the back
08:57and it was literally they just had to do everything they could
09:00to keep a clean sheet and fair play to them.
09:03They did that moment of class from Danny Welbeck as well,
09:06nice little link-up with Eugenio Rutter for the goal
09:09and he posted on Twitter to say he sustained that injury in the second half.
09:15He posted on Twitter to say he's okay and he hopes to be back soon
09:18but he's a bit dodgy for the Wolves game, I should think,
09:22but hopefully it's not as serious as it first looked.
09:25All in all, a really good performance at Newcastle
09:29and a vital win which takes them to fifth.
09:32You mentioned Welbeck's injury there.
09:35Do we have any more further concrete information on that injury, Sam?
09:39I think we would have found it hard to believe at the start of the season
09:41that he was such a key man for Brighton.
09:44He's been the standout player of the season so far.
09:47He's been exceptional, pretty much in the form of his career,
09:51which is crazy to say when he's been around for so many years.
09:55But he really is on fire at the moment,
09:58obviously scoring the winner at Newcastle.
10:01It was such a brilliant goal as well.
10:03It was such a shame when he did go down.
10:06It was a really bizarre incident.
10:08He obviously got a knee to the back from Fabian Scheer
10:11and he actually needed oxygen as he left the pitch.
10:16I pick up the reports on his final score on Twitter at the time
10:22of what was happening and it really didn't sound too good.
10:25I wasn't too sure if it was a collision or what was going on.
10:28But it does seem that he's OK.
10:31He put out a post on social media that night to say he's a bit sore.
10:35But after some extra checks and a scan,
10:37he's pleased to say he should be back in training soon.
10:40He thanks all the medical staff at Newcastle's A&E team
10:43for their care and everything.
10:45So that sounds really positive.
10:47To talk about being back in training so soon after what seems
10:51such a serious incident can only be positive.
10:54And even if it is a couple of games that he ends up having to miss,
10:57just as a precaution, that is such a positive update
10:59because the signs really weren't good at first.
11:02So, yes, I think it does seem like he won't be out of action too long.
11:06Good news. Hopefully we see him back on the pitch soon.
11:09Herzegovina at Newcastle switched from his usual 4-2-3-1
11:13to a 4-4-2 at St James' Park.
11:15And it worked a treat as Brighton defended resolutely
11:18and looked much more compact.
11:20Deren, does this show that Herzegovina has learned
11:22and adapted since the debacle at Chelsea?
11:26Yeah, I think it did.
11:28And I think he needed to as well.
11:31They needed to adapt slightly.
11:33They clearly weren't comfortable with certain aspects
11:35of those tactics at Chelsea.
11:38Especially when you look at the pace of some of the Brighton defenders
11:42that they have.
11:44It just didn't look right.
11:46And what was interesting as well is that after that Chelsea game,
11:50Herzegovina said that he will be speaking to some of the senior players
11:54and see how they progress from there
11:56and what's the best way to go in some matches.
12:01I don't think it's the end of it.
12:03I don't think it'll be the end of this high line.
12:05But I think it just shows that he's prepared to adapt
12:12and he's not so rigid to certain tactics
12:15and that he will tweak it to certain teams
12:18as to who they're playing against, what they expect from the day.
12:21They knew at Newcastle they were going to be under pressure.
12:24They start fast at St James' Park.
12:27It's a really good atmosphere up there.
12:29And if you're too loose, you could be 2-3 down within minutes.
12:34So they really had to be resolute as much as possible.
12:38And I think it was an encouraging sign that he wasn't too stubborn,
12:42that he stuck to his guns no matter what.
12:44He was prepared to be flexible and prepared to work with a team
12:48that were without Van Hecke as well.
12:50So they didn't have Pervis Estupinjan.
12:53They didn't have Van Hecke in the defence as well.
12:56So he was working with what he had
12:59and they produced those tactics to try and negate Newcastle
13:03as best they could.
13:04And they also played Yassine Ayari, who was back in the midfield as well,
13:08with Hinshaw Wood and Bolivar.
13:10So that gave them a little bit of extra energy and protection
13:13as well in front of that back line.
13:16So, yeah, it's all quite a big dose of luck to go with it as well.
13:23So you have to factor that into it no matter what for that game.
13:28Absolutely. Well, the win at Newcastle moved Brian up to fifth
13:31in the Premier League.
13:32Just six points adrift of league leaders Liverpool.
13:35Sam, it might be a little bit too fanciful to imagine a now-being title tilt,
13:39but I suppose we can't really rule out a European charge this season, can we?
13:44No, absolutely not.
13:45I think it really should be the main objective for Brighton.
13:47When you consider the amount of money spent and the amount of the squad depth
13:52that they now have, I think Europe has to be the objective.
13:55Obviously, they've been there already and they want to be back.
13:58And it's as simple as that, really, because obviously they would have been
14:00disappointed with the way the season finished last year,
14:03which was mainly to do with the fact that they were just playing the same players
14:06all season and had so many injuries and not a lot of players to cover,
14:10to cover those that were out.
14:11But it's a completely different story this year,
14:13especially in those attacking areas.
14:14It even feels like with João Pedro out, such a key player,
14:18but obviously he will be missed and he is being missed.
14:21But it feels like they've got so many options that they can still score goals
14:24to win games, as we saw against Furs coming back from 2-0 down.
14:28So it feels like attacking-wise, there's no concerns and they will always
14:31score goals with the options they have.
14:33It's just the main area is defence and it's so crucial they've managed
14:37to get Van Hecker back a lot earlier than expected.
14:40And I think that is really the key, the key area that will determine
14:44how high they finish in the table, really, if they can manage to keep
14:48these key players fit.
14:49Because as we saw when Van Hecker was out and we saw Lewis Dunn
14:53partner up with Adam Webster, it can obviously go a bit wrong.
14:57As we saw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
15:00And if you're playing that high line, you need someone with a bit of pace
15:03to be able to make it work.
15:05Igor has done well, actually, I think in recent weeks.
15:07So he's another option if need be.
15:10But I think, yeah, in those defensive areas, it's probably not as much depth
15:13as there is in those attacking areas.
15:14So that's maybe something to look at in the January transfer window.
15:17But I think form-wise, they've responded so well to that dip in form
15:22and question marks over the tactics and the line-up and everything like that
15:25with two brilliant wins against Spurs and Newcastle.
15:28So I think the times are really positive.
15:30And especially if they start to get some players back,
15:32hopefully Jal Pedro won't be out for too much longer.
15:35So I think, yeah, times are really good.
15:37And I can't see why they can't push for a European place once again.
15:41Well, they'll hope to look to strengthen those European credentials
15:44at home to Wolves this Saturday in the Premier League.
15:46Wolves have yet to win in the league this season, taking one point from eight games.
15:49So on paper, Deron, Brighton look like heavy favourites for this one.
15:53But one just has to remember the Ipswich game to go.
15:55But it might not all go their way.
15:57No, for sure.
15:58You're absolutely right.
16:01And the Nottingham Forest game as well, where they were on top for large spells,
16:04especially at home at the Amex when the pressure is on them to get those points.
16:08But, yeah, I think if they can get a victory against Wolves,
16:11that really will strengthen their chances of European football.
16:15Again, it's a long way to go.
16:17But I agree with Sam.
16:18I think they have to look towards Europe.
16:20They haven't spent 200 million just to sit in the lower reaches of the Premier League.
16:25They did an exhibition of the Brighton in Europe at the museum.
16:32And Tony Bloom was there giving a talk on that.
16:36And his aim is to get back into Europe pretty much this season.
16:40You could tell by the way he was speaking.
16:42They really enjoyed the European trips last year.
16:46And that is the target this year, to get back into Europe.
16:50And I think against Wolves, that can be quite tricky.
16:55They haven't won.
16:57I think they've only drawn once this season against Nottingham Forest
17:01to get their only point that they've got from their first eight matches.
17:04But they've given Liverpool a good game.
17:06They lost narrowly to Liverpool, lost narrowly to Newcastle.
17:09And they were well in it against Manchester City as well last week.
17:14So they've got a few injuries as well, Wolves.
17:17But I still think that they can cause problems.
17:20And it's not going to be an easy game.
17:22It should be.
17:24Brighton should have enough to get the job done against them.
17:27But I think it could be another one of those games
17:30where it could be a little bit edgy at the Amex
17:33because all the fans go there expecting a win.
17:37And sometimes it's not as easy as that.
17:39It doesn't always work out that way.
17:40Gary O'Neill knows what he's doing.
17:42He just hasn't had someone to rubber the green.
17:44Hasn't had much luck.
17:45He said that there's some unconscious bias
17:47towards the top six teams in his latest interview,
17:51which maybe he has a point.
17:53I don't know.
17:54But I think he'll get them fired up, tactically correct.
17:57And it will be a tough, tough game for Brighton this Saturday at the Amex.
18:01Couldn't agree with you more, Darren.
18:03And as a customary for each episode,
18:05we'll take a stroll down Steve Bowen's score prediction corner,
18:08starting with Brighton against Wolves on Saturday.
18:10Hello, Darren.
18:11How do you see that one going?
18:12I think, as we said, I think it might be a tight one.
18:15Yeah, I'm going to go with a 2-1, I think, for Brighton.
18:20I think, yeah, I think it will be tight.
18:22But I'm hoping that Brighton should just have enough firepower
18:25to just get over the line.
18:27Mr. Moore, how do you see this one?
18:293-1 Brighton.
18:31Yeah, good win, a good win.
18:33So it's a follow up on a good run of four.
18:36Mark, fill out some Brighton wins.
18:39Yep, I'm going to go a little bit more one-upmanship.
18:41I'm going 3-0.
18:42They're not going to concede.
18:44I reckon I can see it finishing 1-1.
18:46I'm going to be the miserable one here.
18:49I'm only basing it, as Darren has mentioned,
18:51on the Forest and Ipswich games, and they struggle against teams like Wolves.
18:54That's my only concern.
18:55They'll end up winning about 16-0 now that I've said that.
18:58Hopefully they'll learn from those games.
19:00All good for us, though.
19:01And finally, Northampton v Crawley, Mark.
19:04Crawley win there?
19:05I reckon they'll be buoyed after Tuesday evening.
19:08I think so.
19:09I think Will Swan's going to score and I think it's going to be 2-1 Crawley.
19:12Sam Morton.
19:14I was going to say the same.
19:16I'll be different, though.
19:181-0 Crawley.
19:19Another key sheet.
19:21And Darren, finally, last but not least.
19:23Again, we're going for a full house of Crawley wins.
19:26I'm not, no, because I said last week that they would get results at Reading
19:30and they got hammered.
19:31So I'm going to say they're only going to lose 1-0 this week.
19:34I like your thinking.
19:36Brilliant.
19:37Well, thank you very much, chaps.
